It's the 60th episode of the Women's Running Podcast, and our 22nd Workshop. Goodness we've done a lot of podcasts! In this episode Holly and I have a lot to catch up on. We're talking the day after the London Marathon and we have had ALL the feels about that iconic race, particularly because I didn't get to run it as planned. We talk about how inspiring it is, how weepy it is, how nerve-wracking it is, and how – sort of secretly – we'd both like to take it on next year. We also talk about the races that we have signed up to, or would like to – including a lovely trail run in April that we're hoping to sign up for. And then we're on to the really big news in Esther and Holly Land: our trip to Club La Santa a fortnight ago, which didn't quite go as planned. Spoiler: I went on my own and Holly stayed at home, staring mournfully at a PCR test. So the latter half of this episode is all about me and my trip to Lanzarote to a place that is essentially a Runners' Paradise. And, much like Women's Running, it's a place for all kinds of runners too – perfect for those who love a bit of track running, those who want to push their pace, lonely goats who want to beat their own path, or social runners who want to head out in a chatty gang. They're all there. And you can do so many other things to support your running too: you can book yourself into hundreds of exercise classes, you can take on bouldering, you can cycle up volcanoes, you can learn how to windsurf, you can have a running analysis, you can eat and drink the most incredible food, and you can even just eat ice cream. It's all up for grabs. Stick with me for a bit of autumnal sunshine.
I first trained at Club La Santa in 1990 on a swim week getting ready to head back to the U.S. and Collegiate swimming. I have loved it ever since. Needing something to look forward to as we lockdown again what better than a virtual training camp guide with Joe Beer Our tri camp runs February at Club La Santa on the beautiful island of Lanzarote and since Joe and I have been doing these for well over 10yrs we thought we would share the benefits, what can be achieved, what to avoid, how to fuel and prepare for a week of training. Fingers crossed we get out there again soon. Joe will next be speaking at the https://www.accelevents.com/e/VirtualEnduranceConference Booking details Zwift with Joe Beer
Currently a final year medical student at King's College London. Megan took up triathlon/duathlon in her first year. She did her first degree in Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle University- She has been at uni for 8 years, At Newcastle she used to row and won a few BUCS medals. A shoulder injury and a gruelling training schedule where she would fall asleep in most lectures led her to think about a change of sport. She played netball for a year (coached by Sarah Harding who was episode 6 on this podcast!) but wanted to move away from team sports to have more flexibility at medical school. Her mum Maria Powell is an extremely successful AG multisport athlete (15 podiums and 7 wins at Euro/World Championships in all disciplines except duathlon). Her family holidays used to revolve around watching her mum race around the world and family training camps at Club La Santa, Lanzarote! Megan was always inspired to take up the sport but didn't want to tread on her Mums toes! She grew up doing quite a bit of running in her spare time as a stress release/mental wellbeing but only did team sports competitively. Megans decision to take up triathlon when she moved to London was very much supported by her Mum (she bought Megan her first road bike for her 21st!) and she has coached her for the last 4 years!Swimming has always been Megans least favourite and weakest discipline. She has had a two year battle with shoulder impingements and even managed to partially dislocate her shoulder in her sleep! This frustration led Megan to focus more on duathlons. She did her first sprint duathlon qualifier event at Oulton Park in 2017 where she won her age group (6th overall) and her first standard distance duathlon qualifier in 2018 at Anglian water where she was first female overall. She enjoy both sprint and standard and have got into a cycle of doing sprint at Europeans and standard at worlds. Sprint distance draft-legal racing is really fun but standard distance non-drafting really tests you physically!Megans boyfriend Hugh has been a big part of her journey into AG racing. Prior to her taking up the sport he had done 2 ironman triathlons and was doing a lot of cycle racing! She convinced him to come to the qualifiers with her and give it a go and he has also done tremendously well! They have shared the podium a few times at world and european events! Looking forwardsMegan will graduate and start work as a doctor next year in August 2021. She is hoping to get one big season in before life becomes a bit more hectic! She wants to become a GP eventually and is very passionate about getting the public active! There are several doctors who have been professional triathletes at points in their life and she is very inspired by them!Mental health awareness is very important to her. She has experienced both depression and disordered eating- probably RED-S in hindsight. She is very passionate about changing the idea in endurance sports that lighter= faster. Many athletes get sucked into not fuelling themselves well enough (sometimes voluntarily sometimes not) and it generally always leads to worse performances! She is a big fan of the Train Brave initiative and she volunteers with BEAT at university (the UK's largest eating disorder charity).to find out about the charities that Megan supports you can findthem at....Train_Brave on Instagram and their web page is trainbrave.orgBEAT is on Instagram beateatingdisorders_voice and their webpage is beateatingdisorders.organd if you would like to send us an e mail you can send it to agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comfind us on Instagram amp_1967Twitter agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook AMPGBWebsite is agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com
Ben Price, Coach, Competitor, Bike Fit and bio mechanics expert talks to us about his racing, coaching and 20yrs at Club La Santa. If you head out on a bike group at CLS you hope you are in Bens group as you know he will work hard to keep you safe and entertained. I am not fast enough for Bens groups while on the Joe Beer tri camps so I get the next best thing, Bens dad Phil! Father and Son are legends in the sport and Lanzarote and it was a delight to spend 30mins chatting about Bens plans for the future.
Eid was shadowing one of our fitness sessions from the neighbouring public lane a while back. While at first I though how cheeky of him he then came and apologised. Didn't I feel dreadful as he explained he was a Syrian Refugee living on £5 per day at the local YMCA and swimming was his escape from the stress of his former war torn life and the chaos of being smuggled to the UK. Recognising his talent, I did not believe he had only recently learned to swim we were keen to take him on. Letters to the IOC, sponsors, training camps to Club La Santa, the United Nations a new world was opening to us both.
2003 SFT were just getting going at a single location in Essex. Scott heard about us and visited from South London each week. His commitment was legendary while his fitness and tech less so. From those early years of getting back on track to finally qualifying for Kona. An interesting story as our Tri stories have weaved in and out via Steve Trew training camps, trips to Club La Santa, Ironman South Africa and now finding pleasure in trail running. It is all here and makes for an inspirational listen. Enjoy
My guest for this week’s podcast is none other than Mr. Lanzarote Ironman, Kenneth Gasque. Kenneth has been an integral part of sport and particularly triathlon in Lanzarote over the last 35 years. It all started when he became one of the very first employees at the fledgling Club La Santa back in 1983 and he and his wife Anna Lis have been on this volcanic island ever since. Kenneth was a keen triathlete back then and took part in Ironman Hawaii in 1985, the days when you could simply complete the entry form to take part. He completed 3 more times with the last being 2005. He also organised and grew the “Volcano Triathlon" at Club La Santa which started in 1985 and is still running today some 35 years later. In the late 80’s there were just a handful of Ironman events worldwide with no official ‘M-dot’ race in Europe. He tried and narrowly failed to organise the first event (that honour went to Roth in Germany) but was eventually successful in bringing Ironman to Lanzarote in 1992. Where it has been ever since, making it the second oldest event at a single location (Ironman Hawaii being the longest with 42 years in Kona). In addition to this, Kenneth created the Ocean Lava triathlon back in 2010 and now has 16 events in Europe ranging from sprint distance to 140-6 miles. In recognition for his valuable contribution to the development of the Ironman brand, Kenneth was inducted to the Ironman Hall of Fame in 2019, an honour so far only bestowed on 36 individuals with only 3 from Europe. Kenneth Gasque is an absolute legend in the world of triathlon in Europe and this podcast conversation is a must if you have ever raced any Ironman in Europe, participated in a triathlon in Lanzarote, or visited Club La Santa. We chat about many subjects including: The driving force behind Kenneth’s desire to greet every single finisher at Ironman Lanzarote How fate intervened in the search for an Ironman Hawaii entry form in 1984 The joy and happiness of racing in Kona Why all Ironman swims should still be a mass start Why the first female to cross the line in Lanzarote 1992 was NOT the winner The Kenneth Gasque ‘recipe’ for successful races. Event directors, please take note!!

I recently got to spend some time enjoying the warm weather training at Club La Santa during late November. I was on my own for 4 days so plenty of time for some personal reflection alongside my training - in this episode I asked you, my legendary listeners, to ask me some questions and to present some themes for discussion. In answering those questions I cover topics such as nutrition, parenthood, being a man, social media and its impact of mental health, dealing with anxiety, motivation...and more! Let me know what you think and if you liked it I'll do more episodes like these!
We were both worried that this week's sounded like an ad for Club La Santa. Just to confirm, we didn't receive any financial (or other) inducements to say what we said. We just like it there. As usual, our podcast is sponsored by Ron Hill Specials - manufacturers of bespoke sporting kit :-) Check them out at http://specials.ronhill.com/Support the show (https://www.fetcheveryone.com/invite.php)
Patrick Lange is the reigning, two-time Ironman Kona World Champion and course record holder with a time of 7:52:38, making him the fastest man ever in Kona IM history. On this episode of the Triathlon Taren podcast, Taren talks to Patrick during an early-season training camp at Club La Santa in Lanzarote. They discuss Patrick's approach to training, his #BeTheRecordBreaker campaign, and that epic finish line proposal to his now-fiance Julia!
