The attack on democracy in the United States, and the new resistance

New Books Network

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2025 37:16

The attack in democracy under President Donald Trump in the United States is both broader and deeper than you think. In this timely conversation with Carl LeVan, Professor and Chair of Politics, Governance, and Economics at American University – but speaking only in his personal capacity – we hear about the way that the government has attempted to silence critical voices by intimidating a remarkably wide range of institutions from law firms to universities and on to civil society groups and the media. This new challenge has led to the emergence of fresh sites of resistance, with new alliances and coalitions being formed outside of old structures. This podcast is therefore an essential guide not only to size and scale of the threat to democracy in Africa today, but also to the shape of the fightback to come. Guest: A. Carl LeVan is Professor and Chair of Politics, Governance, and Economics at American University. A policy engaged researcher who has experience on both sides of the divide, Carl's research centers on political institutions, democratization, and governance. He authored Contemporary Nigerian Politics: Competition in a Time of Transition and Terror (Cambridge 2019) and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Nigerian Politics (2018). His work also includes Constituents before Assembly (2017) and studies on Boko Haram, East African power-sharing, and U.S. political trust. LeVan is a Research Associate at the University of Pretoria's Centre for the Study of the United States and serves on the editorial boards of Governance and Journal of Modern African Studies. Before his PhD from UC San Diego, he advised Nigeria's National Assembly and worked in the U.S. Congress, giving him distinctive insights into the most important political struggles of our time. Presenter: Dr Nic Cheeseman is the Professor of Democracy and International Development at the University of Birmingham and Founding Director of CEDAR. The People, Power, Politics podcast brings you the latest insights into the factors that are shaping and re-shaping our political world. It is brought to you by the Centre for Elections, Democracy, Accountability and Representation (CEDAR) based at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. If you think that young people are not informed about, paying attention to or taking action to counter the harm, in rhetoric and policy, practiced by the current administration, you will be encouraged by this episode of Power Station. My three outstanding guests, Jean Garcia, Hannia Hernandez-Mendoza and Bryan Juarez Ruiz, are college students whose academic successes and commitment to shaping a more just future led to their selection as summer interns with the National Migrant & Seasonal Head Start Association. NMSHSA is the advocate and support system for 24 migrant head start centers that provide high-quality educational services to 26,000 children of farmworkers in 34 states.  Jean, Hannia and Bryan have all experienced the extreme challenges of agricultural work first-hand. And they all credit their early childhood days in migrant head start centers as foundational to their educational development and capacity to, as their immigrant parents expect, build a life for themselves beyond the fields in which they have toiled. They are on the way, not only to personal achievement but to charting bold systems change for farmworkers, immigrants and other underserved and targeted communities. Hear them tell their stories here.

We look into the pressing issues of compassion and empathy in political discourse, particularly among conservative politicians, and the importance of humanism in addressing these challenges. We discuss the alarming trend of lawmakers advocating for cuts to essential social safety nets, such as Medicare and Medicaid, which provide critical support to those struggling to meet basic living standards. We lay bare the injustices inherent in proposals that prioritize tax cuts for the wealthy over the welfare of those in need. Our exploration of a particular incident with US Senator Joni Ernst showcases the stark contrast between privilege and empathy, underscoring the disconnect many politicians have with the realities of their constituents' struggles. We comment on the recent attempts to erase LGBTQ+ history and contributions from public life, notably the controversial decision to remove Milk's name from a Navy ship. We stress the importance of recognizing and honoring figures like Milk, who has become emblematic of the fight for civil rights, while also reflecting on the persistence of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments in political circles. Harvey Milk will be known in history far longer than the current Secretary of Defense and President Trump. Finally we look at recent study commissioned by the state of Utah regarding gender-affirming care for transgender youth, which illuminates the significant psychological benefits that such treatments can provide. Despite overwhelming evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of gender-affirming care, we lament the ongoing legislative efforts to restrict access to these vital services, showcasing how ignorance and prejudice often overshadow scientific inquiry. Drawing parallels to Douglas' family story, we highlight the hypocrisy in how society treats different marginalized groups, particularly in terms of medical autonomy.Full Show Notes & Links UsedSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our merch

Indiana U.S. congresswoman Victoria Spartz is the first representative from Indiana to attend a town hall after Speaker Mike Johnson advised GOP members to skip them – recent town halls have been contentious, and Spartz's was no different. Wisconsin Republican members of Congress are running scared from Medicaid cuts and the cowards are starting to do virtual town halls from bunkers, ducking open face-to-face dialogue with their own constituents. So much for the House of Representatives as the government closest to the people. Meanwhile House Republicans left Washington with no budget deal for a St. Patrick's Day vacation (we didn't know that was a thing), likely forcing a partial government shutdown Friday. Senate Democrats do the right thing and do not allow House Republicans to extort them into signing off on a bad deal which will give Trump and Musk a free hand to continue their unconstitutional assault on the civil service. As we are hurtling towards the critical April1st Supreme Court and Superintendent of Public Instruction elections, Crawford and Schimel debate. Was anyone listening? We welcome Citizen Action Organizer Kristie Tweed to clue us in on upcoming Medicaid Town Halls in La Crosse, Wausau, and Eau Claire later this month. Also, Citizen Action Climate Coordinator Kat Klawes joins us to discuss the path-breaking Climate Accountability Act and how you can get involved with our organizing. We also review the terrifying Mahmoud Khalil case, which reminds us of Red Scares and other dark moments in American history when civil rights were shredded.
