It gets hot in the Valley. Perhaps you've noticed. But no matter how hot it gets, even on a 118-degree day in the middle of August, someone is going to be out jogging. You can count on it. But if they end up on the mountain, and they end up not being able to bare the heat, what should be done about it? In this week's episode of Valley 101, we talked with Caitlin McGlade, a reporter for The Arizona Republic who wrote about trail closures, and Rob McDade, the public information officer for the Phoenix Fire Department, about the pros and cons of closing down the mountain trails in the summer. Today commemorates the 23rd anniversary of the Southwest Supermarket Fire in Phoenix AZ.  While this incident resulted in the death of Firefighter Brett Tarver, 13 total Maydays, and deep scars for many working in the Phoenix Fire Department, it also resulted in transformative changes to the American fire service.  Through unparalleled leadership and vision, a 5 year examination of what actually occurred took place.  The focus of this examination most importantly uncovered ‘ why'  it occurred.  As a result, Fire Chief Alan Brunacini recognized critical changes must be made at all levels of the fireground.  A diligent team worked to uncover, refine, and implement significant changes that ultimately led to the Blue Card Incident Command Certification.  Today, this certification system is designed to establish a standard, provide training, and give a mechanism to measure performance in the streets for nearly 4,000 fire departments across the world.  The lessons learned have not been lost or forgotten and we continue to apply them today. This episode features Alan Brunacini, Nick Brunacini, Terry Garrison, Chris Stewart and John Vance. The interview with Alan Brunacini was recorded at the National Fire Academy with Dennis Rubin and Charlie Dickinson. We want your helmet (for the AVB CTC)! What is the key to effective leadership?  According to CEO, author and entrepreneur Ryan Larson, it's the ability to listen empathetically, learn continually, stay calm under fire and instill confidence in others. One day, when a fire broke out at his place of work, everyone in the building was evacuated immediately.  As the fire department arrived, everyone stood in the parking lot looking on in anticipation.  Some people were anxious, others impatient, a few people were likely bored with the whole ordeal and wished they were somewhere else.  But Ryan was mesmerized. As he watched the fire department work, he instantly knew that's what he wanted to do with his life.  It wasn't the excitement of the job, or the bravery they displayed, although that did make an impression.  For Ryan, it was the teamwork that allowed the fire department to work so efficiently and effectively at accomplishing a critical mission, saving lives.  His father, a military man and an assistant coach, instilled the principles of work ethic, service and team work into him early in life. That served Ryan in sports and now he was witnessing it play out in front of him in a way that inspired him to join the Phoenix Fire Department,  Where he learned about humility, leadership and being coachable in order to continually grow and adapt.  These lessons he learned in the fire department served him through the evolution of his career as a financial advisor, entrepreneur, author and CEO.  In this episode Ryan Larson shares the lessons he has learned on leadership that helped him add value to those inside and out of his organization and attain financial freedom. I loved this conversation and I hope you will too.  For more information on Ryan Larson and his book “Ladder to Leader” visit:www.laddertoleaderbook.comEnjoy!

This episode of B Shifter is as fun as it is informative. We had a blast listening to Terry and Nick recount their first meeting, coming up in the Phoenix system and the highs and lows of senior management in the fire service. In 2007, Terry Garrison retired from the Phoenix Fire Department after serving more than 30 years. Working for Alan Brunacini and reaching the level of assistant chief of operations helped shape Terry's consistent values: firefighter safety and customer service. After a long weekend of retirement, Terry served as the fire chief of the Oceanside (Calif.) Fire Department, where he worked for almost three years. Terry then moved to Texas, where he served as the chief of the Houston Fire Department for more than five years. Currently, Terry is the fire chief in Glendale, Ariz., where he was born and raised. Terry has traveled throughout the world teaching fire command. He has a master's degree in education and attended the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Terry and his wife, Annette, live in Phoenix. Nick Brunacini joined the Phoenix Fire Department (PFD) in 1980. He served seven years as a firefighter on different engine companies before promoting to captain and working nine years on a ladder company. Nick served as a battalion chief for five years, and in 2001, he was promoted to shift commander. He then spent the next five years developing and teaching the Blue Card curriculum at the PFD's Command Training Center. His last assignment with the PFD was south shift commander; he retired from the department in 2009. Nick is the author of “B-Shifter—A Firefighter's Memoir.” He also co-wrote “Command Safety.” Production assistance by Katie Bruancini, Michelle Garrido Sutton, Kyle Trumbly and Josh Blum.Produced and edited by John Vance who you can reach at johnvance@bshifter.com

Jeff Griffin is our hero for sharing so much for the benefit of those who may be going through what he has gone through. He joined the Phoenix Fire Department in 1981. In 1982, while still a rookie, Griffin was named Firefighter of the Year for pulling a fellow firefighter to safety. He remained with the PFD for 31 years, serving as a firefighter, engineer and captain. In July 1989, Griffin suffered extensive burn injuries when he fell into a fully involved attic fire. A neighbor captured the close call on video, which has been widely shared for decades. His use of prescribed painkillers during his physical recovery triggered a downward spiral of addiction, life challenges, bad choices and eventual incarceration. Since his release in 2018, Griffin has dedicated his life to helping firefighters struggling with addiction. He volunteers with Phoenix Fire Fighters Local 493, speaks at firefighter conferences and has published articles that describe the lessons he has learned the hard way. Griffin currently works in customer service for Auto Zone and enjoys spending time with his wife, two children and two grandchildren (plus one on the way!). A lifetime football player and coach, Griffin helps coach his grandson's high school football team. Approximately 9,000 people a week are getting their COVID-19 vaccines at the Alamodome. The San Antonio Fire Department operates the drive-thru portion of the Alamodome's clinic. In this week's San Antonio's Voice podcast, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood sits down with Randy Beamer to explain step-by-step what to expect if you have an appointment. He also talks about a program in place to check-up on city employees with COVID-19. Hundreds of city workers have had the disease and Hood says the program has saved lives. The facility has been serving as one of Texas' vaccination hubs since mid-January. Chief Hood says one of the city's prized events will require the Alamodome's vaccine clinic to relocate. Plus, the pandemic has changed what firefighters and EMS technicians do every single day. What's life like for them now? What kind of help are their families receiving? That's all discussed in this edition of San Antonio's Voice. Hood became the first African American Fire Chief in San Antonio when he was sworn in back in April of 2007. Former police officer talks about incident. The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that includes audio, visuals and information related to an officer-involved shooting that happened on the evening of May 29, 2020. Officers from the Cactus Park Precinct responded to a 911 call at a liquor store near 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The caller indicated a man walked into a liquor store holding a handgun and manipulating the slide. Surveillance video shows the man outside the store, armed with the weapon. The man was later identified as 22-year-old Omar Luna. An officer responded to the location and contacted the 911 caller, learning that Luna was walking around while displaying the handgun and making statements about scaring people. Two additional officers responded, obtaining Luna's description and last known location. They began searching the area and quickly located the suspect walking on a nearby residential street. Body-worn camera footage shows officers attempting to speak with Luna, but he immediately ran from them. Two officers got out of their vehicle and ran after him. As Luna was running away, one of the officers saw him remove a handgun from his shorts and swing it in the direction of the officer. Luna continued running and approached the front door of a home, where he fired the weapon as he tried to open the door. One officer returned fire three times, striking the suspect. Luna continued into the house as officers tried to contact the others inside to make sure they were safe. As officers moved residents out of the house, they saw the man sitting on the floor. He told officers he had accidentally fired the handgun. After the last person left the house, officers had Luna crawl outside where he was detained and provided first aid. The Phoenix Fire Department transported Luna to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries prior to being booked into the Maricopa County Jail. Luna has been charged with one count of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer. There were no other injuries to community members or officers. The officer who fire his duty weapon is a 23-year-old assigned to the Cactus Park Precinct. He has 2 years of service. Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. We discussed the loss of our Brother Firefighter Bret Tarver and touched on just a couple of very important take a ways that shaped both Stewart and I during very different parts of our careers. The impact that Bret's death had on the PFD was profound. Please take the time to read this final report published by the PFD. There are valuable lessons that we must always remember. Stewart referred to Retired Chief Don Abbott's Mayday project – Chief Abbott has done a tremendous service to the men and women of the American fire service by helping uncover the obvious and latent issues that lead to mayday events on the fireground. Take a look at the research and find ways to shore up your operations.   “We all have a voice. Have the confidence to share it. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.” Sarah Krahenbuhl, Executive Director of Phoenix Suns Charities and the new VP of Social Responsibility, talks about her fearless style of leadership and how she is using her voice, and her platform with the Phoenix Suns, to make change for thousands of children with food allergies. It's a personal mission for Sarah since her son's food allergies are life threatening. Now three years old, her son had his first incident at just eight months when he reacted to peanut butter. Krahenbuhl called 911. Since then, she has immersed herself into researching food allergies and wants everyone to know how severe, and dangerous, they can be. Food allergies are not just a “tummy ache” or a “rash” Krahenbuhl remarks. There are eight top allergens: fish, shellfish, soy, wheat, dairy, eggs, milk, peanuts and tree nuts. All can be life threatening and her son is allergic to almost all of them. It is reported that over 15 million people have food allergies, and 5.9 million are children under 18. That is roughly 2 children per classroom. When asked what caused her son's allergies, Krahenbuhl says she does not have an answer, but she believes through her research, that what we put into our bodies affects our children. It could be from all the antibacterial stuff we use, the baby wipes, the antibiotics given under age of 2 or while pregnant, and so much more. Her position as VP for Social responsibility means giving back to the community says Krahenbuhl. The Suns have been doing just that since the 60's. A self-proclaimed type A personality, Krahenbuhl says she has never been quiet, and is not afraid to lead the charge. She believes the Suns organization promotes social responsibility from the players all the way to the owners, staff and employees, including their resources. They all give back to the “Arizona we love”. Currently, Phoenix Suns Charities grants about $1.5 million per year to about 115 non-profit organizations that focus on our children and families in need. And this wonderful organization pulled their team together recently to give back in a big way. Caleb, a young boy fighting a life threatening illness, wanted to meet star player Devin Booker. So the Sun's owner, Robert Sarver, gave Caleb and his friends his own courtside seats, while all the players, head of player security, and Devin's own managers worked together to make the night unforgettable. Krahenbuhl says giving back for the Suns is much more than basketball and money. They back their employees. The Phoenix Suns Charities has supported Krahenbuhl's mission by granting funds to the Phoenix Fire Department to help educate First Responders about Epinephrine's use as a first response. Krahenbuhl believes this will be a life saver since, as she says, “an EpiPen save lives”. Sarah Krahenbuhl hopes her work, and her platform with the Suns, can continue to help her reach others in her fight against food allergies. She also hopes her son will one day embrace his challenges and learn to become an advocate for himself, living his life without huge anxieties around eating. Her message to us is that people can die if food allergies are not taken serious. Krahenbuhl feels she has to be a voice for her son every day. Right now, she has no choice.
