In Episode 61 of Bladder Cancer Matters, Dr. Brendan Guercio, a medical oncologist and assistant professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center, discusses the use of immunotherapy in the treatment of bladder cancer.  He explains that immunotherapy works by training the immune system to identify and fight cancer cells, unlike chemotherapy which directly kills cancer cells. Dr. Guercio focuses on immune checkpoint inhibitors, a type of immunotherapy that blocks proteins used by cancer cells to turn off the immune system. He discusses the effectiveness of checkpoint inhibitors, with about 25-30% of patients experiencing significant tumor shrinkage. Dr. Guercio also explores the potential impact of diet on immunotherapy response, specifically looking at probiotics, prebiotics, fiber, and antibiotics. While there is promising evidence that certain probiotics and higher fiber intake may be beneficial, larger studies are needed to confirm these findings. He emphasizes the importance of discussing these topics with a healthcare provider and highlights the role of organizations like the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) in supporting research in this area.

Dr. John Michael Guercio joins me again to discuss a topic that we briefly covered in his last appearance; Behavioral Relaxation Training. In this show, John does a deep dive into this work, drawing on the research of Drs. Roger Poppen, Duane Lundervold, and of course John himself.  Along with the aforementioned Drs. Poppen and Lundervold, John is the co-author of the third edition of the text, Behavioral Relaxation Training. He is also the author of Assessment of Adult Core Competencies: Teaching Skills to Adults with Autism and Severe Behavioral Challenges, which we discussed at length in his earlier appearance in Session 140.  We discuss how BRT was developed, its current applications, and the training required to do it. We also spent a good deal of time talking about becoming trained to implement BRT, scope of practice issues, and protecting client safety. So in case we were not clear in the discussion, if this is something you'd like to do, please seek out the appropriate training and supervision. For Patreon Subscribers, there is an additional 10 minutes or so where John tells a fun story about meeting his childhood football hero, and how said hero invited him to his house for wings and beer. How cool is that!?!? I hope Tom Brady hears this so I can have a similar experience in the next 10 or 15 years, lol.  Here are links to resourced mentioned in the show: The movie, Paper Tigers Stillness Speaks, by Eckhart Tolle NADD Accreditation Programs Why Behavior Analysts Should Study Emotion: the example of anxiety. Today I am speaking with an inspiring and compelling person living a fascinating life with which my guest talks about in a powerful and authoritative way (that's the most accurate way I can describe it.) I am speaking with Jay Guercio. I am honest when I say that after I'd finished interviewing Jay, I turned my computer off and started to cry because I was that moved to live more of my own truth in regards to many things in my life, and because I was exceedingly appreciative of her mind and the love she has in her life and heart that she freely shares with others. I found Jay on Tik Tok while scrolling though my For You feed stumbling on her viral video where she explains how she is in a platonic marriage with her female best friend raising their foster son together. What? Yup, I had a lot of questions as you can imagine. And she answered all of them - everything from where Jay and her wife met, their 15 year old foster son, Eddie - his background, how and why Jay became his foster mom with the added dynamic of being a transracial family, to the platonic marriage itself - where Jay and Krystle even got the idea that this kind relationship could work, what roles they play as wife and wife. They are also in an open marriage and are free to date outside of the marriage so we talk about that.. and many more topics. For me the most compelling and exciting thing about their story is not even the platonic marriage and how that all works for them, but it is this: that love is not-can not, be defined or confined to where we previously think it has to be. Love can show up in unique and new ways in our lives. And further more, the kind of love that maybe a lot of us imagine saving or curing our lives can from places we don't even know exist. I am so proud of this interview and I hope you are moved the way I was. ----- Follow Chad the Diamond on all social media platforms: @chadthediamond Follow Beauty and the Guest podcast on Instagram: @beautyandtheguestpodcast Follow Jay on Instagram and Tik Tok: @thelovelyjaybird --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chad-the-diamond/support

In Session 140, Dr. John Michael Guercio joins me to talk about best practices for supporting adults with Autism. He is well suited to do just this, as John has been working with adults with various developmental disabilities for decades. He is currently the Clinical Director for Benchmark Human Services in St. Louis, Missouri, and is the author of the recently published book, "Assessment of Adult Core Competencies: Teaching Skills to Adults with Autism and Severe Behavioral Challenges." As you'll likely tell, I really enjoyed talking with John, and I think you're likely to learn a lot from his knowledge and expertise in the area of serving adults. In this episode we obviously get into John's formative experiences in the field of Behavior Analysis and talk about his book for a bit. But we also spend quite a bit of time discussing Behavioral Relaxation Training, escalation, crisis management, and so much more. I really think there's something in here for just about anyone in the field. Also, early on in the conversation, John and I discover that we both saw the original line up of The Grateful Dead back in the day. Don't worry though if you're not interested in this because we got back on topic right away. However, after the official interview concluded, we resumed this discussion on our favorite jam bands for about 15 minutes, and this bonus footage is available to those who are signed up in the Behavioral Observations Membership group. Abstract: Cryptochromes (CRYs) are evolutionarily conserved blue-light receptors that mediate various light-induced responses in bacteria, plants, and animals. Plant cryptochromes govern a variety of critical growth and developmental processes including seed germination, flowering time and entrainment of the circadian clock. CRYs photocycle involves reduction of their flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-bound chromophore, which is completely oxidized in the dark and semi-reduced in the light signalling-active state. Despite the significant progress in characterizing cryptochromes, important aspects of their photochemistry, regulation, and light-induced structural adaptation remain to be addressed. In this study, we determine the crystal structure of the photosensory domain of Arabidopsis CRY2 in a tetrameric active state. Systematic structure-based analyses of photo-activated and inactive plant CRYs elucidate new structural elements and critical residues that dynamically partake in photo-induced oligomerization. Our study offers an updated model of CRYs photoactivation mechanism as well as the mode of its regulation by interacting proteins. Copy rights belong to original authors. Heyo fellow Zengineers!! This episode's got our friend, comedian, rap battle enthusiast, and occasional hype man, Peet Guercio as guest. "Did you say rap battles?" Yes. Yes we did. Rap Battles!! Surprised? Not us. We don't just talk about computers, bitcoin, and the bathroom. Come on!! First we'll intro you to the wild world of the Rap Battle. You may be picturing the early days of hip hop or 8 mile, and to that I would say that you are on the right track. (Scope some great videos in the show notes of this week's episode.) Peet helps us chase down what Rap Battles are, where they came from, and why he digs participating and watching them so much. Rap Battles are not only insanely impressive to watch, they also happen to be a great starting point for a convo on the broader context of art and expression, standup comedy, safe spaces, the tightrope of intent versus context, and the importance of free speech. We'll leave you with some of Peet’s favorite "bars" and th --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/zengineering-podcast/support
