How you define Stephen Duneier depends on how you came to know him. Some define him as an expert institutional investor, while others know him as a large scale installation artist, avid outdoorsman, professor, decision strategist, coach, business leader, mindfulness extremist, author, speaker, daredevil or Guinness world record holder. In his talk, Stephen explains that what truly defines him aren't titles, but an approach to decision making that transformed him from someone who struggled with simple tasks to a guy who is continuously achieving even his most ambitious dreams. For thirty years, he has applied cognitive science to investing, business and life. The result has been the turnaround of numerous institutional businesses, career best returns for managers who have adopted his methods, the development of a $1.25 billion dollar hedge fund and a rapidly shrinking bucket list. Mr. Duneier teaches graduate courses on Decision Analysis in UCSB's College of Engineering. His book, AlphaBrain is due for release in early 2017 from Wiley & Sons. Through Bija Advisors, he helps business leaders improve performance by applying proven, proprietary decision-making methods to their own processes. His artwork has been featured around the world and is represented by the Sullivan Goss Gallery. As Commissioner of the League of Professional Educators, Duneier is using cognitive science to alter the landscape of American education. He is the former Head of Currency Option Trading at Bank of America and Emerging Markets at AIG International. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/getu-chandler/support

On this episode of The Lieb Cast, we talk with legal expert Joshua Ritter about two big decisions made by the Supreme Court. The first one, called 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, is about a Christian website designer who didn't want to make websites for same-sex weddings. The court decided that it was her right to choose what kind of work she wants to do. The second case, Groff v. DeJoy, involves a postal worker who didn't want to work on Sundays because of his religious beliefs. The court sided with the worker, saying that employers must make reasonable accommodations for employees' religious practices. These two cases could change the way businesses treat their employees' rights to free speech and religious freedom.Joshua Ritter, Esq., Media Legal Analyst and Podcast Host of "True Crime Daily: The Sidebar", lends his legal expertise to help us navigate these complex rulings, discussing their wider impact on society and the potential contradictions within the court's interpretations.

IntroductionHave you ever made a comprehensive plan, but it failed anyway? Do you find yourself in extreme positive or negative situations and fail to make the best choice? Well, you are not alone. Better still, you are in good company. Even plans made with endless resources can fail. Governments cannot address problems such as unemployment and war. They also cannot seize opportunities by misallocating public resources. Better planning will enable you to capitalize on opportunities. Preparedness will allow you to cut losses when disasters strike. How do you prepare for unexpected life events? Can you improve the success rate of your plans? The Black Swan is based on the premise that life is full of surprises. Some are good, and some are catastrophic. The book reviews events such as the rise of the Internet and devastating wars. It also studies our tendency to offer explanations when confronted with significant events. The book offers insight into the nature of unexpected events. It also looks at typical human reactions. Finally, ithttps://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/22/books/chapters/0422-1st-tale.html ( provides tips on managing life's extremes better). About Nassim Nicholas TalebNassim Nicholas Taleb is a Lebanese American author. He is also a statistician, risk analyst, and former options trader. The Black Swan is one of the five-volume philosophical essays, Incerto. He published Incerto between 2001 and 2018. Taleb teaches risk engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and is a Risk and Decision Analysis journal co-editor. In addition, the remarkable statistician has authored over a dozen inspiring books. Taleb's approach to risk management saw him profit from contemporary financial crises. He advocates for a black swan approach to financial markets that caters to hard-to-predict events in decision-making. Taleb also advocates for decentralized scientific research and aims to overcome gaps in current studies.  Nassim Taleb authored four other books in Incerto. These books have won many accolades and have gained a global audience. Taleb's unique style includes a mixed narrative; the reporting is semi-autobiographical and philosophical. It has led The Black Swan to win several awards. StoryShot #1: Black Swan Events are Unprecedented and Have a Huge Impact. Later, They Are Explained Away as PredictableHistory and society jump—incremental change does not happen as we expect. The scientific approach involves tracking events based on progression. Unfortunately, societies move from fracture to fracture, and explaining events using a cause-and-effect basis is flawed. People mainly saw white swans for the majority of history. Some societies even believed that black swans did not exist. A group of explorers first saw a black swan in Western Australia in 1967. The stunning news spread across Europe and the world like wildfire. The tale of the black swan inspired many scholars. Philosophers such ashttps://www.investopedia.com/terms/j/john-stuart-mill.asp ( John Stuart Mill) used the term ‘black swan' when referring to rare, improbable events. Taleb proposes that black swan events have the following characteristics:  They are not expected. They have a considerable impact on the world. People later give convincing explanations of what happened. Notable black swan events include World War II and the market crash of 1987. 9/11 and the discovery of antibiotics are also black swan events. The Lebanese Civil War was a black swan event. Christians and Muslims had lived peacefully for over 1300 years. The Lebanese culture preached tolerance. Schoolchildren respected their neighbors' cultures. A...

WENDY GROUNDS:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast for project managers by project managers.  I'm Wendy Grounds; and, as always, here in the studio with me is Bill Yates. Listeners remember if you're claiming PDUs for our podcast, as well as for our courses, check out our website. Our PDU claim page has been updated with the new instructions.  We are so glad you're joining us today.  We have a special guest.  This is Dr. James Crowe, and he's a physician scientist at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  He's the director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center and the Ann Scott Carell Chair.  He's a Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. BILL YATES:  Dr. Crowe has pioneered development of human monoclonal antibodies as potential treatments for viral diseases.  He's going to describe to us what that means.  I think we've all heard about antibodies lately.  But he can describe it from a science perspective.  And they'd done a lot of work on antibodies prior to the COVID pandemic.  But when the pandemic hit, his team pivoted, and we'll talk with him about that.  In fact, the Crowe team won an award in December 2020.  They were recognized for their work on COVID antibody research, and that's a fantastic award that recognizes the achievement that they've had in that field. Meet James JAMES CROWE:  Yeah, thanks for having me. WENDY GROUNDS:  We're just so excited to talk with you today, to clarify some issues about vaccines and about immunization.  And I think you're just the right person to talk to.  But I want to just go back a little bit and find out what is your mission as a scientist in the vaccine area?  How did you get started in this?  And what really is your goal? Sometimes academics publish and wonder if anyone out there is reading. In the case of Eric Bickel of the University of Texas, he found that one person was. Early in his career Bickel did research on sports analytics/O.R., specifically strategies for baseball players at the plate and their managers. He asked, when should a batter take a pitch? In 2009 he published a related paper in Decision Analysis. Afterward, he received a thank you from a minor league catcher who had begun following his advice. It turns out that that player was Evan_Gattis, now the hot rookie with the Atlanta Braves, and when Sports Illustrated covered Gattis' remarkable first year, it wrote about Bickel's influence on Gattis' hitting. With its time limit and lack of guidance to participants, some ideas don't get expressed, so they can't be considered when decision time comes along. INFORMS decision analysis pioneer Ralph Keeney, Professor Emeritus at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, makes his recommendations about improving the brainstorming process in his study Value-Focused Brainstorming, which appears in the current issue of Decision Analysis. Background: Children with congenital hearing impairment benefit from early detection and treatment. At present, no model exists which explicitly quantifies the effectiveness of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) versus other programme alternatives in terms of early diagnosis. It has yet to be considered whether early diagnosis (within the first few months) of hearing impairment is of importance with regard to the further development of the child compared with effects resulting from a later diagnosis. The objective was to systematically compare two screening strategies for the early detection of new-born hearing disorders, UNHS and risk factor screening, with no systematic screening regarding their influence on early diagnosis. Methods: Design: Clinical effectiveness analysis using a Markov Model. Data Sources: Systematic literature review, empirical data survey, and expert opinion. Target Population: All newborn babies. Time scale: 6, 12 and 120 months. Perspective: Health care system. Compared Strategies: UNHS, Risk factor screening (RS), no systematic screening (NS). Outcome Measures: Quality weighted detected child months (QCM). Results: UNHS detected 644 QCM up until the age of 6 months ( 72,2%). RS detected 393 child months (44,1%) and no systematic screening 152 child months (17,0%). UNHS detected 74,3% and 86,7% weighted child months at 12 and 120 months, RS 48,4% and 73,3%, NS 23,7% and 60,6%. At the age of 6 months UNHS identified approximately 75% of all children born with hearing impairment, RS 50% and NS 25%. At the time of screening UNHS marked 10% of screened healthy children for further testing ( false positives), RS 2%. UNHS demonstrated higher effectiveness even under a wide range of relevant parameters. The model was insensitive to test parameters within the assumed range but results varied along the prevalence of hearing impairment. Conclusion: We have shown that UNHS is able to detect hearing impairment at an earlier age and more accurately than selective RS. Further research should be carried out to establish the effects of hearing loss on the quality of life of an individual, its influence on school performance and career achievement and the differences made by early fitting of a hearing aid on these factors.
