“Close my eyes, she's somehow closer now / Softly smile, I know she must be kind / When I look in her eyes / She goes with me to a blossom world” The lyrics to the iconic Beach Boys song “Good Vibrations,” penned in part by Mike Love, are likely about a woman from long ago. But they could just as easily be about the flavors and sensations from his brand new rum, Club Kokomo Spirits. We had Love in-house along with his children who work for the spirits company to chat all things San Diego, award-winning rum, and good vibes on this week's Happy Half Hour. Also joining us was Geoff Longenecker of Seven Caves, the brand's distiller, who was shaking up mojitos for us in real-time. In case you aren't already aware, he's one of the preeminent spirits distillers in San Diego. “It's pretty damn good, isn't it?” Love whispered loudly to me, leaning in as he sipped. Indeed. Both Love and The Beach Boys have a storied history in San Diego. They shot the Pet Sounds album cover at the San Diego Zoo. They played countless concerts at the Rady's Shell, Del Mar Fairgrounds, and what was formerly Jack Murphy Stadium; Mike Love used to live in Rancho Santa Fe (where his daughter went to Cathedral Catholic); and, of course, the fact that it's distilled right here. Love's aspirations started years ago when he was enjoying a “perfect” mojito in New York with his wife, Jacquelyne, while humming the chorus of his co-authored hit song, “Kokomo.” His penchant for wordplay took over as he uttered the word “Kokomojito,” and ever since, Mike's dream has been to share the spirit of Kokomo with the world, he says. Currently, Club Kokomo Spirits makes award-winning rum and gin-based canned cocktails and a line of bottled rums. The company prides itself on using high-quality ingredients, including natural sugars and flavors, like a unique blend of demerara cane sugar rum and traditional Jamaican pot still rum. “Aruba, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take ya / Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama / Key Largo, Montego / Baby, why don't we go? / Jamaica…” Again, the song is about something else, right? Or…? Love says, “Kokomo is a state of mind.” He smiles and takes a sip, and grins once again.

Renee Seevers has lived in a tiny home for several years and is now in a “shorty” school bus. Renee is the CEO, a.k.a. crazy event organizer of TinyFest. This event helps give people exposure to more options for their life, a gathering for people who live in or want to consider living in tiny homes on wheels or on land. In this episode, Renee talks about how her lifestyle with a tiny house on wheels gives her a chance to explore all over west of the Mississippi without ever really needing to pack. She loves how she can drive to work at a coffee shop and pop back into her house to make lunch. She's become an expert in adjusting and adapting to each situation, including the neverending changes in technology and ways to connect to the internet for work. She sometimes stays in one location for six weeks to six months to get to know the area and meet some people or prepare for her next event. Now that she's recently married, she's sharing the living space, but her husband works primarily outside and doesn't need desk space. Currently, she and her husband have a home base in Oregon on 160 acres of land where the short 5-window bus is their home. Renee hasn't always lived in a tiny house. After living and maintaining a 3300 square foot, five bedroom, four bathroom house – Renee decided in 2015 to sell it all after her youngest daughter was heading to college. She bought her first tiny home on wheels – an 87 sqft home nicknamed “Big R” she towed with her truck and took to a few festivals in 2016. She kept thinking, “We need to have more of these festivals because it gives people a great way to experience tiny living, ask questions, and see things in person.” Renee has met a lot of entrepreneurs and remote work folks through TinyFest and is part of the tiny living community herself. She recommends that everyone “enjoy the quest for balance and the quest to understand what that balance is for you and at which point along the work/life scale you are most happiest now. It will likely change later, so be ready to go with the flow!”For Renee, the idea of “Going Tiny” is more than just buying and moving into a moveable home. It's about fun, sustainability, autonomy, flexibility, and freedom--financial freedom, freedom of mobility, freedom from stuff and stress. At the TinyFest events, they have two stages with people teaching about the tiny living lifestyle; because she feels that, more important than simply buying or building a tiny house, Renee wants to help others understand they can create a life that serves them well - including topics of housing, travel & entrepreneurship. TinyFest started in the midwest, in Des Moines, Iowa, and has branched out to TinyFest California, TinyFest Northwest, TinyFest Texas & TinyFest Southwest. TinyFest is a great place to explore alternative living options for work-from-home people. There are two upcoming events on December 3 & 4 in Phoenix, Arizona, at WestWorld (Scottsdale). The next one will be on March 11 & 12 in San Diego, California, at Del Mar Fairgrounds. If you'd like to learn more about Renee, TinyFest, or see who is going to be at her next event, you can find her in the following places:Website: http://tinyfest.eventsEmail: info@tinyfest.eventsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TinyFestEvents

Tales from the Cobblestones

Todays guest is Scott Bass the "Podfather" of surf talk. Scott is a 50 year old male that drinks oolong tea and plays pickle ball, but don't hold that against him. He's a frothed out surf grom at heart. He helped coin the phrase "Yeah Guy"!!! And he'll be the first to admit it, that "surfers are the worst". With a chance meeting with "Surfer" Magazine editor Steve Hawk on a Mexico surf trip he got the opportunity to work for Surfer as the "Online Editorial" Director for 10 years. Scott and Surfer Magazine both weathered the storm in this new digital landscape. While working at Surfer Magazine Scott would developed an idea for a "Surf Talk Show". It was clunky back then but Scott would have a panel of revolving guests on his Internet radio surf talk show. These guests...mostly Chris Mauro, James Pribram and Jeff "Baldy" Baldwin. The Surfer Magazine gig would eventually fizzle out and Scott Bass and "Baldy" took their show to terrestrial radio...a "Sports" station of all places, where they rebranded the name of the show to "Down the Line Surf Talk Radio" with a focus on San Diego Surf with Report "Call-ins" and revolving "Drop-ins" from the Surf Community. The Show was high energy with a clash of personalities and a pattern of Scott constantly interrupting his guests but especially His Co-Host "Baldy". Scott held the Torch for "Surf Talk" Radio for decades...keeping it alive with his stoke and passion. Radio would run its course and "Bassy" and "Baldy" would part ways. David Scales, an emerging surf media talent was in another county looking for a knowledgeable surf personality to help him Co-Host a "Surf News" Style show for his "up and coming" Surf media juggernaut called the "Surf Spledor Network". Scott and David would eventually hook up and start recording "Surf Talk". The two has amazing chemistry and what they had together. Together they would go on to Co-Create the surf podcast know as SPIT, a surf news show where there cover everything under the sun. One of the best Surf Podcasts of all time! All the while that was going on in Scott Bass's life there was something else going on behind the scenes...Scott hustles surfboards. Him and his wife would turn it into a business, a surfboard trade show called "Sacred Craft" a yearly event honoring the true craftsmen of the surfboard making industry...the backbone, the guys covered in dust stinking like resin in the back allies. And where better to do it then the County that makes more surfboards than any other place in the world....San Diego Baby! Anyways...The "Sacred Craft" Surfboard gathering would grow and become the premier Southern California surf Festival.......with the popularity of the growing event, Scott decided to rebrand the event name to "THE BOARDROOM SHOW" a gathering of the surfboard making industry under one roof. Bringing together legends, shapers, craftsmen, designers, artisans, lovers of music, friends and all things surf. And he's doing it once again..BIGGER and BETTER than ever!! Join us this September 25th and 26th as Scott Bass brings you "THE BOARDROOM SHOW" at the Del Mar FAIRGROUNDS in San Diego California. Till then...here is my conversation with the great...SCOTT BASS!!! YEAH GUY!

More than one-third of the county’s 1.95 million voters have already cast their ballots, almost doubling the number of people who voted by this time in the 2016 election. Plus, with Rep. Susan Davis retiring, the 53rd Congressional District race has opened up to a new generation — Democrats Georgette Gómez and Sara Jacobs. Also, the election next week will determine, among other things, the political majority of the county board of supervisors and what growth and development will look like in the North County. In addition, a first-generation college student is preparing to vote in her first election. As a Mexican-American, she's thinking a lot about how migrants have been treated along the border over the past four years. And, the coastal 78th Assembly District includes some of San Diego's most popular sites from Del Mar Fairgrounds and La Jolla Shores to Balboa Park and Imperial Beach, but the race between two Democrats isn't earning widespread attention. Finally, in a rematch of the March primary, voters in the 77th District will decide whether to keep Democratic Assemblyman Brian Maienschein or replace him with Republican employment lawyer June Yang Cutter.

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! We have two special guests for this week’s episode: Brett Roggenkamp, lead organizer for the San Diego Chapter of Frontline Foods; and Rodnia Attiq, owner of El Borrego, a popular barbacoa restaurant in City Heights. El Borrego is one of roughly 40 local restaurants that Frontline Foods has teamed up with to provide meals to health care professionals and other essential workers who are treating COVID-19 patients. Frontline Foods was started in the Bay Area by an ICU nurse, and since March it has expanded across the nation. Its mission is simple: They collect donations, use the funds to place a bulk order with a local restaurant, and then have those meals delivered to local hospitals. Brett says San Diego was one of the first cities the organization expanded to outside of San Francisco, and since the pandemic began it has directed $150,000 in donations back into our local economy and provided over 12,000 meals. Brett says their goal is to partner with restaurants that are independently owned and order from them on an ongoing basis. He tells us how they find which restaurants to partner with, and notes that they deliver meals not only to large hospitals and ERs, but also senior centers and the Psychiatric Hospital of San Diego County. They’re currently working on delivering 1,000 meals to employees at San Ysidro Health’s 23 sites. Rodnia shares that sales at El Borrego were down by 70 percent, and then as much as 90 percent, earlier this spring. The patio at her restaurant is still under construction, so she relies on takeout and to-go catering orders. She says partnering with Frontline Foods helped save her business, and she was able to retain her entire staff thanks to its community fundraising. In Hot Plates, we talked about how Biga (a longtime favorite of the San Diego Magazine staff for its sandwiches) reopened for takeout, and that Artisan Noodle Tatsuski—a ramen shop that was much hyped before it opened last fall—closed its doors. Chicken Charlie’s opened another pop-up location in Mission Beach right by Belmont Park, so you can still get a deep-fried taste of the postponed San Diego County Fair throughout the summer. All of Homestead Solana Beach’s outdoor furniture was stolen last weekend, and it had to close for a few days because of the theft. But the story has a happy ending: Supporters donated to their Gofundme account to purchase new furniture, and the Del Mar Fairgrounds lent them some patio furniture after seeing the story on NBC San Diego. We’ve got a lot of great recommendations in Two People for Takeout! Rodnia chose the curries at Bahn Thai, and Brett’s pick is Lucky Bolt, a home-delivery meal service that partners with local farms. Troy’s pick is the pizza (and parklet setup) at Caffè Calabria, and David says to try the vegan Thai food at Grains. My pick is the Chongqing spicy chicken and Sichuan dishes at Kangxi Is Coming. A listener wrote in to recommend the pastas at Cesarina. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Do you have a question for Troy? Need a recommendation for takeout? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you’re too shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com.

The board that oversees the Del Mar Fairgrounds has approved the return of the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in March, despite new concerns raised by firearms safety advocates. NeverAgainCA founders Ira and Rose Ann Sharp of Del Mar told the fair board at its meeting last week that an increasing number of sales at the show are "ghost gun" kits that can be purchased and taken home the same day. The kits are not considered firearms for legal purposes because they are incomplete and require assembly, so most California firearms laws don't apply to them. Also, the weapons don't have a serial number, which can be used to track sales. "Crossroads sells Saturday night specials on steroids," Ira Sharp told the board, and he asked the board not to renew the Crossroads contract. However, the board approved the show without comment along with dozens of other events planned for March at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

We’re taping from the Hilton San Diego Del Mar, which is just steps away from the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This week’s special guest is David Favela, founder of Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan, the first Latino-owned brewery in San Diego. David is a first-generation immigrant from Mexico, and he grew up in Escondido. He did his undergrad at Chico State and studied international business at UCSD, and worked at Hewlett Packard for over 20 years. He launched Border X Brewing five years ago, and just expanded the brewery to a second location in Los Angeles. David tells us how Border X Brewing began and why he decided to focus on Mexican flavors and brewing traditions, which resulted in the creation of their most popular beers—saison brewed with jamaica (hibiscus tea) and the Horchata Golden Stout. He also talks about how Barrio Logan has changed over the years—the neighborhood is bustling with more breweries, art galleries and new shops, which we featured in this month’s Neighborhood Guide—but that the change is community-led. David’s pick for Two People, $50 is Mariscos El Golosito, a B.Y.O.B. Sinaloan seafood restaurant in Barrio Logan, and the staff’s picks this week were Louisiana Purchase and Thai One On in Carlsbad. In Hot Plates, we talked about the revamp and remodel of Currant American Brasserie, the new menu at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido and Liberty Station, and the news that Mendocino Farms and Blue Bottle Coffee are opening locations at the new Tower 180 office building on First and Broadway. David’s 60 Second Beer Review is Groundswell Brewing Company’s Tropical Hefeweizen. The Hot Topic this week is the Aperol spritz—is it a good or bad drink? Check out the article in the New York Times that started the debate, and hear what Troy and Lauren have to say. It’s time again for San Diego Magazine’s annual Best Restaurants party! Next week, on June 12, San Diego’s top chefs and winners of this year’s critic’s and readers’ picks will serve their signature dishes to an intimate crowd at Pirch at UTC.
