“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." The apparently upcoming demise of a former employer has led me to thoughts about topics I've sidestepped in the past on Inappropriate Conversations, keeping work and personal life separate. Perhaps it makes no sense to protect an organization that no longer exists, and I don't think the stories I could tell are really that embarrassing. I consider them to be more revealing about the gap between what a group says it values compared to the culture it actually creates. If that's an Inappropriate Conversations show update, then the update for Walk The Earth is about a plan for daily "devotional" podcasts during Lent, starting on "Fat Tuesday" and ending on the Monday after Easter. Lent Roll. The inspiration for such short 2- or 3-minute shows came from the Different Drummer this week, someone I don't even know by name. Different Drummer: (j)ula of soundwavesoffwax

Feeling challenged in more than one way, I'm recommending the 2022 movie Close as one of the best films in years. It directly reminded me of a past Inappropriate Conversations podcast with Mark Greene as the Different Drummer. His work, and the director of Close, directly refer to this episode's Different Drummer, too. I was reminded of my childhood, at the same age as the central characters in the film, and a sense of disconnection that came from a change in school districts. I also was challenged by how our defense mechanisms seem to presume something inappropriate (directly or indirectly incestuous) might make an unwanted appearance in the plot of a film like this. I don't blame the filmmakers. It's more the way our society is driven to sexualize, seemingly, everything, even when nothing of the sort is going on. Some Assembly Required (A NeoSurrealist Forsaking a Habit for Lent) was completed on April 1, 1994. It's nonfiction title was Temptations from the Wilderness II, a second Lenten writing experiment. This one was a jumble of 40 different writing styles during Lent of that year, including traditional omniscient narration of plot-driven action, a recipe, sermon, poetry, drum music, and more. Three years ago, these eight chapters were shared in a serialized form of sorts through seven Inappropriate Conversations episodes -- each with its own Different Drummer, etc. This file pulls the entire novella, such as it is, together.

Grammy Award, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ~Hits "That Lady" & Chris's Solo Ballad "Still In Love" Start of Our Weekend!!If you are familiar with THE ISLEY BROTHERS, then you know Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, CHRIS JASPER, an integral member of THE ISLEY BROTHERS during the 1970s and 1980s—their gold and platinum years—from the 3+3 (1973) to Between the Sheets (1983) albums. These were the years when THE ISLEY BROTHERS were a self-produced, self-contained group. If you are familiar with THE ISLEY BROTHERS, then you have heard the music of CHRIS JASPER, who was primarily responsible for writing and producing all of THE ISLEY BROTHERS music during this time, including such beautiful love songs as “For The Love of You” and “Between the Sheets” and uptempo funk such as “Fight the Power.” His arrangements and instrumentation as a classically-trained musician, and his expertise on the keyboards and synthesizers, are the foundation of the legendary “Isley Brothers Sound.” Re-recorded elements of "That Lady" are incorporated in "i", the lead single of Kendrick Lamar's 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. The song won the awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 2015 Grammy Awards. When the six members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS disbanded (1984), Marvin and Ernie Isley joined CHRIS JASPER and formed ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY. Without this crucial musical component, THE ISLEY BROTHERS were no longer a self-produced, self-contained group. CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” and musical talents to ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY, and topped the charts singing lead vocals on “Caravan of Love” (1985), a song that was covered by English recording group, the Housemartins, an international #1 pop hit. “Caravan” was also used in commercials as part of a Dodge Caravan advertising campaign. He was also awarded a CEBA Award For Excellence for a Miller Brewing Company commercial. The music for that commercial formed the basis for “Brother to Brother” from the “Different Drummer” album, which supported the anti-apartheid struggle going on in South Africa at that time. His music has also been used in radio and television commercials, most recently “Who's That Lady” (Swiffer) and “Between The Sheets” (L'Oreal). When ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY disbanded (1987), CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” to his own solo projects, topping the charts with “SuperBad,” a song promoting the value of education. CHRIS JASPER has continued to write songs and produce his own R&B/Gospel music, as well as other artists, for his independent record label, Gold City Records (www.goldcitymusic.com). CHRIS JASPER's music has been covered and sampled by hundreds of new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. His music has also been used in television and radio commercials. In 1992, CHRIS JASPER, along with the other members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS, was inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. Chris Jasper was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 30, 1951, the youngest of seven siblings. While growing up in Cincinnati, Chris studied classical piano starting at the age of 7 years old. After graduating from high school in Cincinnati, he moved to New York to study music composition at the Juilliard School of Music. Chris received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music composition from C.W. Post College in New York, where he studied under noted jazz pianist and composer, Dr. Billy Taylor. He subsequently received a Juris Doctorate degree from Concord University School of Law. THE JASPER/ISLEY CONNECTION The Jasper and Isley families lived in the same apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chris's older sister, Elaine, married Rudolph Isley. The three older Isley brothers, Rudolph, O'Kelly and Ronald, formed a vocal trio (“The Isley Brothers”) and relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey. While temporarily living in New Jersey as a teenager, Chris and the two younger Isley brothers, Marvin and Ernie, formed a band, “The Jazzmen Trio”, that played locally in New Jersey. Chris played keyboards, Ernie played guitar and Marvin played the bass. Along with Chris, Ernie and Marvin also attended C.W. Post College in New York. While in college, Chris, Marvin and Ernie played on the older Isley Brothers recordings, including “It's Your Thing”. SOLO CAREER In 1987, Isley-Jasper-Isley disbanded and Chris and Ernie embarked on solo careers. Chris formed his own record label, Gold City Records, and released two albums as a CBS-associated label. His debut single as a solo artist, “Superbad” reached #1 on the R&B charts. Eventually, Marvin and Ernie returned to record under the Isley Brothers group name, and Chris continued his solo career, releasing a total of 9 solo albums to date, including 4 urban contemporary gospel CDs. Chris has also produced a number of artists for his Gold City label, and has worked with such notable artists as Chaka Khan, writing and producing a song for her CK album (“Make It Last”). Chris's music has been covered and sampled by numerous new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. The most recent addition to Gold City is Chris's son, Michael Jasper, who released his debut album “Addictive” on the Gold City label in 2010 at the age of 16. “Addictive” was written and recorded by Michael, and co-produced by Chris, who accompanies Michael on the talkbox and background vocals. Michael's is called CD "Dreams". Chris has received numerous gold and platinum albums and music industry awards, including the BET lifetime achievement award. In 1992, Chris, along with the other members of The Isley Brothers, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2016, Chris was awarded the National R&B Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Songwriters Hall of Fame. Chris also received numerous ASCAP awards.. Chris lives in New York with his wife of 40 years, Margie, and his three sons, Christopher, Nicholas and Michael. - See more at: chrisjasper.com © 2023 Building Abundant Success!!2023 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

My friend Steve Gretch returns to share about his own podcast, which he started following his first episode of Echo Zoe Radio in March, 2021. The show is called A Different Drummer, and focusses on the promises of God found throughout scripture. Outline of the Discussion Steve is a drummer, and named his show based on that and that we as believers march to the beat of a different drummer. It found inspiration in our church pastors telling people to believe the promises of God. Steve was enrolled in a Bible class and kept seeing "the name of God" in his study. He asked the teacher "What is the name of God," and didn't feel he got a satisfactory answer. In a roundabout way, studying the promises of God is a study in the attributes of God. John 16:33 assures us that Jesus has overcome the world and sin. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a promise that God will direct our paths, but is also a call to trust in Him. In 2 Peter 1:2-4, God shows that he is absolutely committed to His promises. Lamentations 5:19 is about how God's throne endures. James 1:2-4 encourages us to have joy in our trials. Psalm 46:1-5 grounds us in the Lord through the trials of a cursed world. What is the difference between joy and happiness? Happiness is an emotion, and can be easily taken from us. Joy is rooted in the Lord, and cannot be taken from us. Joy and Hope go together in many ways. Psalm 1:2 invites us to take delight in the Law of the Lord. God is doing a new thing in Isaiah 43:19-21. He is working very actively in our lives. 1 Kings 8:58 tells us that the Lord turns our hearts toward Him. We will be with our King (John 14:3.) An elder C.S. Lewis looks back on his remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Chrsitian writer of the past century. The Most Reluctant Convert features award-winning actor Max McLean as the older Lewis and Nicholas Ralph - breakout star of PBS Materpiece's All Creatures Great and Small - as young Lewis. Beautifully filmed in and around Oxford, this engaging biopic follows the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia from the tragic death of his mother when he was just nine years- old, through his strained relationship with his father, to the nightmare of the trenches of World War I to Oxford University, where friends like J.R.R. Tolkien challenge his unbelief. Norman Stone Norman Stone began his professional career in television as the youngest producer/director to be working at the BBC, and soon established himself as a top film maker with his highly acclaimed film A Different Drummer about the blind and deaf Christian poet, Jack Clemo. Four years later, he created Shadowlands, the gripping film drama on the love and loss of C.S. Lewis, which earned two BAFTA awards, an International Emmy, and the coveted ‘Prague D'or' for Best Director. This film went on to be an award-winning stage play, as well as a Hollywood movie.Other dramas followed included Martin Luther – Heretic, starring Jonathan Pryce; New World with James Fox; The Vision starring Dirk Bogarde, Lee Remick and Helena Bonham-Carter, and the award-winning Burston Rebellion with Eileen Atkins and Bernard Hill. Stone was also asked to direct the internationally acclaimed CBS co-production Pied Piper, starring Peter O'Toole. He then directed two of the famous BBC Miss Marples films, starring the iconic Joan Hickson in the title role, and also, The Black Velvet Gown, which earned him his second International Emmy. Always interested in experimenting with new forms of filmic storytelling, Stone went on to create and direct The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, which starred Jeremy Irons and was nominated for a prestigious ACE Award in the category of Best International Drama. This experience led directly to Tales from the Mad House, an award-winning series of one-man dramas, featuring such stars as Jonathan Pryce, Dame Eileen Atkins, Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, James Cosmo and Helen Baxendale, before making the gritty, Glasgow feature film, Man Dancin' which collected more international awards.A string of new dramas followed, including C.S. Lewis - Beyond Narnia, Florence Nightingale, The Narnia Code and KJB - The Book that Changed the World (winner of The Templeton, Movie Guide, Epiphany Prize). In 2020, Norman completed a major Feature Documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor, The Final Fix, exploring a remarkably effective new treatment for drug addiction, and in 2021, during lockdown, he wrote and directed a new, creative drama on C.S. Lewis called The Most Reluctant Convert. This film was cinema-premiered in over 500 American cities in November 2021 and has already been seen in over 120 countries around the world.Norman is currently preparing a dramatically challenging feature film, Raising Hell, the true story of the battle to beat child prostitution in Victorian England, and is also developing an exciting, new TV action series, ROK, set in Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.Website: https://cslewismovie.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16QFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CSLewisMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fpa_theatre/IMDB: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16Q
Nathan and Eppy take a look at the final episode guest starring Jesse Welles, S5E20 A Different Drummer. Jim witnesses a bizarre surgical procedure while in the hospital, and obsessively tracks down the surgeon to find out what's going on. Starting out a mystery, and transitioning to a character study of a horror-movie-inflected villain, this was an interesting episode to end the fifth season on. Unfortunately, it has the least Jesse Welles of her three appearances, but her airheaded "anti-Rockford" is a memorable character to round out her time on the show. Did you know? 9 our of 10 employers are investing more in mental health benefits than they ever have before (source: https://www.aihr.com/blog/workplace-wellness-trends/).Concerns about burnout, employee churn, and psychological emergencies have led workplaces to developing a more comprehensive and proactive mental health and suicide prevention strategy.Benefits like coaching, tele-mental health, personalized wellness plans and stress management tools are becoming increasingly popular for large employers. In addition, workplaces are starting to shift away from reactive, downstream approaches to more proactive prevention. They are focusing on building caring cultures and psychological safety and they are connecting the dots between DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) work and mental health. In this conversation, I speak with Mike Veny, a man who has been living these connections and is now training workplaces on how best to support their workers. For more information on this episode go to https://www.sallyspencerthomas.com/hope-illuminated-podcast/101
Monty Hall returns and Felix tries to get his band on Monty's new TV show but needs Oscar's help to make it happen in S4E19 “A Different Drummer”. Topics covered include: 1) the many songs from the 1920s that are sung in the show and the multiple music cuts 2) the firing of Julius LaRosa 3) another debate about whether is Oscar is 40 or 50 given that Monty, who is 53, and Oscar were in college together, 4) and the fact a clip from a prior episode is shown.
Shortly after former Lt. Governor, Bob Bullock fired Kent, he asked him if he wanted to go to lunch.
One reason to share this early episode of Inappropriate Conversations is the way the Different Drummer segment relates part of a story I've revisited in multiple ways -- my testimony, so to speak. I intend to "TalkBack" to other episodes in upcoming months that tell the story more directly. Another reason is the topic itself: types and forms of knowledge. Along those lines, new introductory material looks at opposition to vaccination from a perspective that, frankly, presumes hypocrisy. Many of the same people who were enthusiastic about following the ex-president quickly through Operation Warp Speed are the ones who seem more interested in undermining the new administrative branch than saving their own lives. It's almost as if this is more about who is president than about the positive impact of vaccination during a pandemic. http://www.inappropriateconversations.org/e/48-four-things-i-know/
Peter McClard was born of the 60's, that time when black and white became color and music exploded. He had a voracious appetite for music even when very young. He took lessons on viola in first grade, moved on to guitar when 9 years old. He remembered listening to his brother's twelve string acoustic with a stethoscope and was blown away. There was a "rainbow of overtones, and the sound of metal and wood and vibration just made me so happy and I was just in love with sound at that point." He eventually went on to play in many bands, but also became enamored with other aspects of music, fractals, math, patterns, new overtones, which ultimately led to development of his theory of holistic tonality, sort of a unified theory of music. Peter says the power of music is so deep, vibration is everywhere, in everything, and goes to the most primal part of our being. Music and sound can be used for any purpose, good or bad, so its important for us to elevate music so that it can create shifts in consciousness that can better society. He says we need to reduce some of the noise and bring out the good stuff, including the silence and peace. Peter has developed lots of software, but check out a couple of his apps, including Pixound and Different Drummer, and other software at www.technemedia.com. Peter is an amazing, smart thinker and musician.
My plan is to observe Pride this year with TalkBack episodes that address homophobia pretty directly. This one is my rejection of someone I've named a Different Drummer in the past. His podcast hesitantly, but I also would say proudly, proclaimed some highly misinformed views about human biology, scripture, and more. I believe the result, if not the intent, could be very harmful to a broad range of LGBTQIA* people. So, as an ally, I spoke up. It wouldn't be the last time, either. http://www.inappropriateconversations.org/e/106-the-violence-of-denial/

This episode features the audio from one of our recent webinar presentations. Dee Apple, Ph.D. shares an intriguing case about a distrustful, quirky, angry adolescent named Finn who'd had no success with three previous therapists. Dr. Apple describes how he took the time to develop trust with the boy, realizing that their relationship couldn't be rushed. Over a series of sessions—thanks to Dr. Apple's patience—they were able to address Finn's prickly provocative character so that his sensitive healthy core nature could be uncovered. Following the presentation, Peter Crist, M.D. and Chris Burritt, D.O. join Dr. Apple for a discussion with questions from the webinar audience. Question or Comment? Shazam!"The Sound of aDifferent Drummer"October 9, 1976 Curtis is a young man blessed with great shortstop skills in baseball, but he prefers to focus his practice time on being a violinist. His teammates have other ideas and will stop at nothing to get him to play in an important game. Will Billy, Mentor, Captain Marvel, and Maury Wills himself be able to make this situation right? It's the penultimate episode of the Shazam! series as John and Richard discuss the waning years (in John's opinion) of baseball, the missed potential in the cat, Polecat, and which actor the Mego Shazam! figure looks like. It's all here and we want to hear from you on what you think of the episode. Write us as ShazamIsisPodcast@gmail.com. Moral: “Billy: Maury Wills is one of the most respected men in baseball, not just because he was a great player, mostly because he respects others. You know, in some ways, all of us are different, but in one way we're all alike. We all want people to like and to respect us. Maury Wills: That's right, Billy. And the way to bring that about is to treat others as you would like them to treat you. It's called, do unto others and it means, if you give respect, you'll get it back." Erik Lokkesmoe, Principal at Aspiration Studios (Nashville, TN), provides insights into how strong branding, a brand's relational partners, and brand-based distribution systems are changing marketing; highlights how some of the “newer players” (NetFlix, Amazon Prime, Hulu) are tracking audiences' viewing viewing data to establish future project direction; and comments on how marketing metrics illustrates the critical alliance between marketing's creative side and its service side. Aspiration specializes in distribution (theatrical through digital) and marketing (ideation through execution) for films, TV, and media programming. In this interview, Erik explains the differences between and impacts of: Integrated, technology-driven marketing distribution vs. the more traditional functional siloing Relational partners (leaning in together) vs. transactional partners (breakdown potential) The “Blue ocean" strategy (uncontested market space) vs. "red oceans" where competitors fight for dominance Erik spent 10 years in politics, where he learned about marketing . . . and that politics was not nearly as effective in shaping hearts, minds, behavior, and beliefs as was storytelling. Today, he is a “producer of marketing distribution” for “makers of content” (creatives). He identifies three issues driving marketing and content today: We have the “most cluttered” marketplace in history Audiences are “tribal”—more fragmented and segmented than ever Traditional systems and old ways of doing things are breaking down. He also defines three ideals that motivate younger generations: Community (belonging to something) Craft (being good at something) Cause (believing in something) Erik authored the book, Different Drummer. Theme? Intentional avoidance of “common knowledge” communications to facilitate independent thinking. Erik is available on Twitter at: @eriklokkesmoe and @AspirationHQ. His email is: erik@aspiration.is and the company website is: https://aspiration.is/
January 31, 2018 - The Lost Giant of American Literature - William Melvin Kelley was one of the most important writers of fiction who most people never heard of. Rather than noting what is in this World Storytelling Day episode, I'll note what is regrettably missing. * Not much personal storytelling, despite a commitment to return to nostalgia a few weeks ago. * Repeating some material from Inappropriate Conversations #50 about Lilo & Stitch. * Insufficient callout to the band The Peddlers for the theme song to The Lost Continent. * Planned but forgot to connect the "sound" of Dana Gillespie to Candye Kane. * Missed an opportunity to feature at least a clip from the blues singing of the Different Drummer. * Perhaps even fell short on fully noting the impact of an actress and costume designer on me at a young age. Despite missing some elements, the "monsters and dragons" topic for storytellers this March 20 brought out my memories of good monsters, both literally and ironically. Different Drummer: Dana Gillespie
I have spoken about World Storytelling Day before, years ago. This year will be very different, though. With the theme of "Trees" I'm releasing this podcast virtually unedited. I've added the theme and Different Drummer music, and that's pretty much it. If you'll pardon the slight pun, the recording of this story will have to stand on its own.
