In this episode of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers, Shane Stewart, Mayur Naik, and Tony Burgess look into direct pay permits, their potential benefits, and the intricacies of maintaining them. As companies explore ways to optimize their tax functions, this conversation sheds light on the potential savings and responsibilities of direct pay permits.Key Points: • Direct Pay Permits allow taxpayers to pay state taxes directly, leading to potential tax savings• Benefits & challenges of obtaining a direct pay permit highlight a significant local tax savings, balanced against stringent qualifications and regular audits• The Implementation process involves strategic vendor selection after acquiring a permit and leveraging expert assistance for compliance and auditsDirect pay permits allow businesses to take control of their tax functions. They can shift the responsibility from vendors to an in-house mechanism, leading to more efficient management of exemptions and, often, considerable local tax savings. For instance, in Texas, businesses can switch from paying taxes based on their vendor's place of business to their own in potential jurisdictions with lower tax rates. Naik highlights, “The most important benefit [of a direct pay permit] is just getting control of your tax function... It helps you manage your exemptions much more efficiently.” Burgess adds on potential savings, “We have taxpayers that they're buying strings of pipe that are $15 to $20 million for multiple wells, and they're getting an instant up to $2 millions of savings just off of a single invoice.”Subscribe and listen to future episodes of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.©2023

Electric co-ops saw a major victory last year with the inclusion of direct-pay incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act. The law gives co-ops and other tax-exempt entities the ability to receive reimbursements from the government for deploying new energy technologies, putting them on a playing field with for-profit providers. How does this change the game for co-ops going forward? Hear from NRECA's Paul Gutierrez, Minnkota Power Cooperative's Mac McLennan and Northeastern REMC's Eric Jung.
Direct pay permits, which allow taxpayers to pay sales tax directly to the state rather than sellers, are becoming more common. Many businesses see direct pay as an essential element to the management of their state and local tax obligations, however there are still many questions. How do direct pay permits work and how are they best utilized? Key Points: 1. Direct pay allows qualified buyers to pay taxes directly to the state comptroller rather than to the seller 2. Offering direct pay for customers can generate significant long-term tax savings 3. Holders of direct payment permits may issue blanket exemption certificates in lieu of paying taxes when purchasing, leasing or renting taxable items On the latest “Weaver Beyond the Numbers,” host Tyler Kern talked to Weaver's Mayur Naik, Partner, State and Local Tax Services and Shane Stewart, Partner-in-Charge, State and Local Tax Services to explored how direct pay can simplify sales taxes.“It's a mechanism that's offered by a lot of the states that allows a taxpayer or purchaser to pay the tax directly to the state instead of paying to their vendor,” said Naik. Naik added that once a system is in place, direct pay can generate significant tax savings, and a well-designed process can provide granular reporting about the tax status of each item purchased. Stewart further explained there's not enough knowledge surrounding direct pay and his goal has also been raising awareness. “Many businesses are not aware these programs exist. We're just trying to get the word out, so taxpayers know that this is not burdensome. It's not administratively challenging to maintain compliance in this space and there are professionals on our team who specialize in helping clients manage and fully utilize their direct pay permits,” said Stewart. With Weaver's experience in dealing with complicated state and local tax issues along with a deep understanding of the direct pay permitting and compliance process, the team is equipped to make sure your business is minimizing its tax liability. People who earned more and want to do their own taxes can use Free File Fillable Forms. These are the electronic versions of IRS paper forms. Either way, everyone has a free electronic filing option. The IRS has extended the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. Individual taxpayers have until May 17 to file and pay 2020 federal income taxes. If individual taxpayers need more time to file, they can use IRS Free File through May 17 to electronically request an extension to file until Oct. 15. Taxpayers should remember that an extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. Penalties and interest may apply to taxes not paid by May 17. Individual taxpayers can get an extension by paying all or part of their estimated income tax due using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System or a credit or debit card, and indicating that the payment is for an extension. This way they won't have to file a separate extension form and will receive a confirmation number for their records.

Whether you are an elite athlete, a PTA mom who runs marathons or a grandparent who plays on the floor with their grandchildren, you are subject to injuries which limit your mobility. You can seek treatment through physical therapy or even surgery, if needed, to eliminate your pain. But you come out of that treatment in the same shape you were in when the injury occurred. Doug Bertram, founder and CEO of Structural Elements®, has developed a new approach to treating orthopedic problems. His orthopedic wellness clinics focus on prevention of injury, joint preservation and training a body to function optimally. Practitioners in his clinics are like engineers who evaluate the safety of a bridge before cars can drive over it. These body engineers not only fix issues as they arise but can find deterioration of a joint before an injury occurs by looking for mechanical compromise or weakness. When you come to them in pain, they don’t focus just on getting rid of your symptoms. They focus on retraining your body so the same injury doesn’t happen again or lead to new injuries. Success should be measured by the ability to get back to a heathy active lifestyle. The Structural Element clinics are made up of chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists and massage therapists. They all use different tools in the scope of their practice, but they look at the body through a similar lens and see it as one whole functioning unit. If someone has an issue with a specific area such as a knee, they look at the body from the ground up and the head down, finding and treating the areas that are affecting the knee. Each person’s body has a unique optimal position. There is a balance point that makes it function efficiently. As a way to understand this consider tuning a piano. If it was tuned to perfect mathematical harmonics, it would sound terrible because it did not take in factors such as wood hydration, temperature or humidity which all affect the sound. Tuners have to take all those variables into account when creating the perfect sound. With the body, care has to be taken to evaluate each individual’s unique body and circumstances and make changes accordingly. The big picture is posture.Even though everyone is different, there is one area that needs attention in almost everyone. That is posture. Most people have a significant inefficiency in how they use their muscles. They use their big muscles, known as prime movers, to stabilize their posture causing numerous compensations and changes in connective tissues. They are working too hard just to stay up. With treatment to fix things like rotations or misalignments and training to keep their head back and open their shoulders, people can get their balance back. Then their prime mover muscles can focus on moving. Everyone can benefit by starting there. An exercise given to almost every patient to benefit their posture: Lay flat on your back on floor with knees bent, feet flat. Tuck chin to the back of your neck. Do a single pelvic tilt so your back is flat on floor. Put your palms face up with arms at a 45-degree angle to the side. Lay there 3 minutes doing deep abdominal breaths. When you inhale, push your abdomen toward the ceiling to get good diaphragmatic movement. This is important because the diaphragm connects where the hip flexors connect. Hip flexors are chronically shortened muscles due to the amount of sitting we do and there is a direct correlation between them and the ability of the diaphragm to move properly. Lying flat on your back for three minutes and doing deep belly breathing exercise frees up the diaphragm to move. Structural Elements® clinics are Direct Pay. They do not contract with insurance companies because they dictate the number of visits and which specific body part can be worked on. Instead, their contract is with you, the patient. They will evaluate your problem and use their judgement to treat you with the care you need. With insurance if you came in with knee pain, they have to treat the knee, not the underlying problem. Because they are not limited by insurance specifications, they can evaluate the whole body to determine what other parts add to the issue. They fix the structure, balance the body and retrain it. Doug has developed the Structural Elements® system of orthopedic wellness clinics that focuses on delivering treatment engineered to speed healing, decrease pain, improve athletic performance and overall wellness. He has also developed a technique for training new practitioners and has begun franchising the Structural Elements® system. His passion is mentoring and educating people to bring the best modalities to the forefront, giving practitioners the ability to decrease their patients time spent healing and increase the time spent living an active lifestyle.Resources:https://www.facebook.com/structural.elementshttps://www.instagram.com/structuralelements/https://www.linkedin.com/company/structural-elementswww.healthaccountabilitycoach.comwww.facebook.com/houselifestyles
