rWotD Episode 3017: 2009 Table Mountain fire Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Thursday, 7 August 2025, is 2009 Table Mountain fire. The 2009 Table Mountain fire was a large fire in and around the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town, South Africa. It broke out at approximately 20:30 on 17 March 2009 in the vicinity of Rhodes Memorial and initial fears were that the fire would spread to UCT's Upper Campus. The Table Mountain National Park quickly deployed firefighting personnel on the mountain, but the fire spread due to the strong winds. At around 23:20 on Tuesday evening, the fire started moving up Devil's Peak and by 00:00 was at the tip and making its way around the mountain to the suburbs of Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht, Vredehoek and Gardens on the north side. The flames were engulfing the mountain and the huge amounts of smoke made it hard for rescue and fire-fighting helicopters making their way to the fire. By 00:30, people from the aforementioned areas were told to evacuate due to the strong winds pushing the fire around the mountain. By this time, Fire & Rescue Services had deployed 29 fire engines and 90 firefighters who were assisted by 45 firefighters from the South African National Parks and volunteers of Disaster Management The day following the fire, four helicopters, including a South African National Defence Force Atlas Oryx, were called in at dawn to water-bomb the fire, and to lift a team of firefighters high onto the mountain. Table Mountain National Park Fire Manager Philip Prins said about 500 hectares (1,200 acres) of park land had been burned: some fynbos, some renosterveld, some grass, and stands of pine trees. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Thursday, 7 August 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2009 Table Mountain fire on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Salli.
There has been a need for Innovation in Firefighting footwear and finally its here. In firefighting, there has always been a trade-off between comfort and protection & There is a lot of research and evidence that shows the heavy weight of fire boots leads to increased risk of mobility restrictions, physical strains and slips, trips, and falls. Tests in the GORE-TEX Professional labs show this to be as much as 300g per boot after just one hour of exposure to water.their are also challenges faced by Fire and Rescue Services brought on by climate change, lifestyle changes & as a result, they need PPE that is versatile, comfortable while offering high levels of protection.Today im joined by Oli Willson from Gore-Tex & Simon Ash from HAIX UK to talk about the new HAIX GTX Extraguard that puts innovation into every step with No breaking in period, increased comfort and reduced weight among many other factors. In this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael speaks with Niki Foster from the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce. The conversation covers a wide range of topics including the significance of Small Shop Saturday, upcoming events, and the importance of supporting local businesses. The discussion begins with a lighthearted exchange about recording on Black Friday and the chilly weather outside. Janet and Niki commend each other for not partaking in the Black Friday madness, instead choosing to support local businesses on Small Shop Saturday. They then transition into the main subject of the upcoming events organized by the Chamber of Commerce. One such event is 'Coffee and Conversation,' which has been running since July and has quickly become a community favorite. It offers informative yet casual meet-ups where attendees can interact with local officials and learn more about the community. Niki shares her excitement for the December 6th event featuring leaders from Warren County Fire and Rescue Services. The conversation also delves into the upcoming Christmas Parade, scheduled for December 7th. Niki emphasizes the importance of timely registration and outlines the logistical challenges of organizing such a large event. Janet also humorously remarks on the ridiculousness of last-minute entries trying to be part of the parade. Following that, they discuss the 'Merry Market,' which will have 48 vendors offering unique, locally-made products. Janet and Niki underscore the value of shopping local not only during the holidays but throughout the year. They mention how buying locally-made products keeps money within the community and helps small businesses thrive. Niki details the various activities happening downtown on parade day, including carriage rides, Christmas classics at Royal Cinemas, and special events at local businesses like Stone Branch Center for the Arts and Artsy. There will also be food trucks and musical performances, making it a full-day event for the community to enjoy. Wrapping up the conversation, Janet and Niki talk about an upcoming Business After Hours event at Royal Cinemas, where donations will be collected for the foster care program. The event will conclude with a free screening of 'It's a Wonderful Life,' making it a festive occasion for networking and holiday cheer.
Happy 200th birthday, Scottish Fire and Rescue Services!!! I'm a bit late to the party. Still, I've done my best to celebrate your anniversary in the best way I can - by giving homage to the amazing fire safety engineering and firefighting that came out of Edinburgh and your founder, James Braidwood. In this episode, we tap into the secrets of early fire safety measures and discover the fascinating history of firefighting with our guest, Michał Stachowicz, a dedicated Scottish firefighter. We promise you'll gain a newfound appreciation for the roots of fire engineering, which surprisingly predate the establishment of professional firefighting. From the early codifications of the 1400s to the impactful Great Fire of London in 1666, this episode is brimming with riveting tales and historical insights into the evolution of fire protection in the UK.We take a journey through time as we contrast the altruism of today's firefighters with the profit-driven origins of fire protection, shaped significantly by insurance companies. Learn about the preventative measures that were set in place long before formal fire services existed, including the fascinating use of historical firewalls in cities like Copenhagen. We also explore the pioneering efforts of James Braidwood, whose revolutionary work in risk management and fire prevention set the stage for organised firefighting in Edinburgh and London during the 19th century.Join us as we honour Braidwood's legacy and his transformative impact on fire safety regulations and practices. From his groundbreaking techniques, such as early personal protective equipment and strategic fire station placements, to his radical ideas on fire spread prevention, Braidwood's forward-thinking approach remains influential. Despite facing financial hurdles and limited cooperation, his vision for a unified fire service prevailed, underscoring the enduring significance of his contributions. Michał Stachowicz helps us celebrate the indelible mark Braidwood left on the firefighting community, offering a compelling narrative for history enthusiasts and fire safety advocates alike.Read more about Braidwood in this memoir book: Fire Prevention and Extinction by James Braidwood.Visit the Museum of Scottish Fire HeritageLearn about the Great Fire of Edinburgh Cover image: One of Edinburgh's first fire engines from 1824, By Kim Traynor - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=19965754----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. A report published this week by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services confirms that police actions such as ‘taking the knee' or wearing rainbow lanyards are causing confusion amongst police officers and undermining public confidence. The review also suggested that police officers have been recording trivial matters such as non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) because of worries about getting into trouble. We briefly touch on an article by Labour MP Graham Stringer in The Sun that highlights how the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act has shocked MPs of all political stripes before moving on to the murky world of government statistics. The Times reported this week that 2021 census figures claiming there are 262,000 transgender people in England and Wales have had to be formally downgraded. The Office for National Statistics admitted that there was “potential for bias” in answers to the question: “Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?”. Yet, as we discuss in the episode, reliable statistics are the essential building block for informing public debate, especially when the underlying issue is so culturally taboo that there are repeated attempts to shut down debate. Finally for this week, we dip into an excellent article by Greg Lukianoff in Quillette. He lays out twelve assertions that are frequently made against free expression before marshalling the counterarguments to demonstrate why each of them is flawed. ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.
The tragic death of a 17-year old UBC student from Ontario in Lynn Canyon on Sunday renewed calls for exercising caution, especially when you don't know the terrain. We speak with Dwayne Derban, assistant fire chief of the District of North Vancouver District Fire and Rescue Services about what happened, and what students and parents need to know. Then, Canada has imposed a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. We're joined by Werner Antweiler, associate professor, UBC.'s Sauder School of Business, to discuss the economic and political ramifications. Finally, a new TD Bank survey finds most parents are financially supporting their kids in post-secondary — and while students say they have a budget, many wish they knew more about financial planning. Meranda Hamilton, senior manager of youth and student banking at TD Bank, and Murray Baker, Manager of financial empowerment at the Family Services of Greater Vancouver, join host Michelle Eliot to talk about these issues.

Be sure and join us with our special guest, FDNY Veteran Captain Russell Vomero of Rescue Company 5. Appointed to the FDNY in August 1979, assigned to Engine 10 on Water Street.Engine 10 and Ladder 15 were housed together. Spent my first year on Water Street before moving to Liberty Street across from WTC. In August 1981, I was transferred to Ladder 149 (Castle on the Hill) in Dyker Heights. It was one of the last companies I put on my transfer, and I knew nothing about it. Two of the officers in Engine 10 had been fireman there and said it was a great house. The job of being a firefighter started there. Did not do a lot of work but had a great lieutenant in Steve King. I cut my first roof in Ladder 149, made my first grab, and had my first Rescue sucks encounter. In 1984, it was announced that a new Rescue would be put into service on Staten Island. Rescue 5 had been in service previously on Staten Island but was disbanded. I saw this as an opportunity and put in my transfer. I got to Rescue 5 in August 1984, and was now amongst some great guys who still wanted to work. Steve Casani and Jack Pritchard were the officers I worked with most, and I learned so much. I was studying, and in May 1986, I took the lieutenants test and did terribly in relation to everyone else. A short time after the test, it was reported that there had been cheating. Sometime in the fall, a 2nd test was announced. In October 1987, I was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the 7th battalion in the 3rd division. The first vacation spot I covered was Ladder 21. Rescue 1's quarters were being rebuilt, so they were being housed with Engine 34 and Ladder 21. It is where I started to meet some of the guys from 1. My first fire was in Ladder 21, and Captain Kennedy kicked me out of the elevator in Ladder 4. Vinny Dunn became my savior. In May 1988, I covered my first spot as a rescue officer in R-3, which was almost the beginning and end of my career as a rescue officer. I stayed covering in Rescue Services then SOC for the next six years. There was a lot of chatter on who would be the officers transferred into SOC.had the opportunity to work in every area of NYC. Then, after Tommy Williams died in 1992,I was given R4 UFO. Going to SOC Captain when a lieutenant spot opened did not go well. I had no plan to study for Captain; however, six months before the Captains test I was told I would be doing a UFO spot in Marine 1. It was our penance-like Rescue school. It was a learning and studying experience working in Marine 1. The next few years, before being promoted to Captain, were great, and something happened in the last six months of covering that changed everything for me. I got promoted to Captain on the same department order Ray Downey was promoted to chief. I wanted to go back into SOC, so I went to see the two chiefs in charge of SOC within the first few weeks of getting promoted. I was assigned to Division 5 as a Captain. I could not ask for a better place. By now, Squad 41 was back in SOC, so there were 11 companies, including the marine units to cover. In May or June 97, Spillane got promoted out of Squad 41, and Banker was placed in the spot UFO. I was covering a vacation when the spot opened, so I continued to cover. In September 1997, I was assigned to Squad 41. The rest of my career went on from there. Retired Jan. 2003 We can't wait to hear the Captains stories as he has a lot to talk about! Most organisation would like to believe they support and empower their leaders, commanders & first responders to make efficient and effective decisions, use discretion, apply a risk-based approach and provide the organisation with both competency-based assurance and operational accountability. But how do you ensure that these front line leaders and the teams they work within, can operate safely and effectively, when faced with less frequent, but potentially more complex situations and cases, when realistic experience or training is harder to come by. Dr Katherine Lamb is a respected authority on the training and assessment of Incident Command and crisis decision making. Katherine worked as an accomplished research academic before joining the Fire Service in 2004. During her Fire Service career, Katherine served in Birmingham, Manchester and Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Services, her final post was Lead Officer for incident command training and assessment. In 2015, Katherine developed Effective Command, a behavioural marking system for the assessment and recording of incident command competence. This development tool is accredited and endorsed by several professional bodies and academic institutions, and it is used Internationally as the Best Practice methodology to train and assess incident command competence.
