Michael Ashwood was a young detective assigned to help investigate the murder of a neo-Nazi in Sydney. What Michael and his colleagues didn't know was that federal investigators had placed a listening device in the murderer's home. What they heard would make chilling evidence at the murderer's trial. Michael was also involved in the disappearance of Tegan Lane, the child of Keli Lane, who was convicted and imprisoned for Tegan's murder, despite Tegan's body never being found. This week, I'm joined by two of my favourite guests Joe La Scola and Sean O'Rourke aka Movie Dumpster to discuss the TROMA trashterpice GIRLS SCHOOL SCREAMERS (1986) Although not originally a TROMA produced movie, once Lloyd and the gang got their hands on it, they made sure to add some unmistakable TROMA touches such as worms, meat hooks and swamp creatures. Do they belong in this movie? Absolutely not. Do they improve this movie? Absolutely. Toodles!   ————

This week, Jeff and Lucas look at a slasher movie that also mines the haunted house and possession subgenres for its tropes. Girls School Screamers is basically a trope-fest, shot in Philadelphia in the 1980s by John P. Finnegan and distributed by Troma (who also reshot parts of the film). Lucas is much kinder to this one than Jeff is, but they both agree: the music by John Hodian is excellent.

Cerise and Vicky recover from their longest episode ever by zipping through their shortest episode ever, adding five wonderful and kind of samey films about girls school to their list! 6:10 – Seance (2021, Simon Barrett) – Cerise and Vicky rediscover what genre films can be when they don't take themselves deathly seriously. Also: Gay. 18:20 – Madchen in Uniform (1931, Leontine Sagan) – Cerise and Vicky dig up the foundations of the girls' school drama to investigate whether it holds up ninety years later. Also: GAY. 29:13 – Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975, Peter Weir) – Cerise and Vicky investigate the disappearance of five Victorian schools girls in an attempt to discern what role repressed sexual yearning played in their disappearance. Also: GAY GAY GAY. 43:21 – Sailor Suit and Machine Gun (1981, Shinji Somai) – Cerise and Vicky sit down for what they assume will be a quick, unpretentious exploitation movie, but get something way better than they expected/ Also: Not *as * gay, but certainly gay enough. 57:22 – Whispering Corridors (1998, Park Ki-Hyung) – Cerise and Vicky introduce a way better franchise than the Saw movies to the list, shouting out Tartan Asia Extreme in the process. Also; gaygaygaygaygay.

Toni-Kay Dawkins is an entrepreneur, creative director and producer, people enthusiast, and change agent. She is a proud graduate of Wolmer's Girls School and Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont, USA. Toni-Kay holds a Bachelor of Arts in Documentary Filmmaking, Mediation and International Dispute Resolution from Bennington College. She is also a certified Mediator. Toni-Kay (TK) is most passionate about building the community she and many of her closest friends now flourish in. A community where people of different political persuasions, religious affiliations, educational levels and socio-economic backgrounds unite in order to: 1. Acquire and (more importantly) implement the knowledge needed to make permanent positive change 2. Hold each other accountable therefore keeping everyone more consistent 3. Create additional income streams and learn how to invest it. 4. And from this unique community has emerged many success stories. Toni-Kay has learned that blindly following “society” and listening to what “they" say has led many to socially accepted images but emotionally and financially deficient lives and she is uniting those ready to ask uncommon questions, take uncommon action and experience uncommon results. TK has proactively and intentionally invested in her personal and professional growth and development and has since: - Won several corporate awards - Made her directorial debut (She has to date directed 3 successful theatrical productions and has a 4th theatrical production "Once a Man, Twice a Wife" which opens April 3, 2021 and will be available online) - Lost 50lbs - Created an additional income stream for herself and others - Walked away from the 9-5 she was programmed to believe she couldn't live without. In today's episode, Toni-Kay shares many powerful nuggets and lessons, a few of my favourites are below: 1. The importance of taking care of our mind and mindset. 2. Our mindset accounts for 75%, while our behaviours and actions account for 25% of our success. 3. The power of habits. 4. The power of relationships. 5. The power of communication and community (unity). Thank you for listening! Please subscribe and share if you know someone who is looking for a message of hope, strength, courage and resilience.

"The Backs of Life" is our stupid new project for the stupid new year! The plan is to examine each "backdoor pilot" episode of The Facts of Life in excruciating detail. (You know backdoor pilots. It's when an episode of an existing TV show is used to introduce a potential new spin-off show. This happened on The Facts of Life... a lot.) But we're starting with a 1979 episode of Diff'rent Strokes (season 1, episode 24, "The Girls School"), because The Facts of Life itself started there as a backdoor pilot. Thrill to Mrs. Garrett making the move from housekeeper (for a rich dude) to housemother (for a bunch of crazy girls). We meet some future Facts of Life regulars (Blair with a cigarette! Tootie on rollerskates! MOLLY RINGWALD!), some girls we'd never see again (Jennifer? Laura?), and a headmaster played by the cranky guy from The Bob Newhart Show. We also get generic disco music, a frog named Leon, Dana Plato as a ballerina (sort of), Gary Coleman in a donkey costume, and another mysterious Fake Brady Girl connection. Also: More TV talk with ESO Board Silly, more Rock and Roll Hall of Fame talk with Pop Culture Cosmos, Happy 100th Episode to The 42cast, and Happy Birthday to a Cobra Kai sensei. My ONE wish this Christmas is to help Lucky Asiimwe and his team at the Kitojo Empowered Girls School. Kitojo is a rural village in Western Uganda and Lucky set up a school a few years ago to help the poor, underprivileged and often orphaned girls break the cycle of poverty. Many of these kids never get the chance to finish primary school. Instead they're forced to work from a very early age in the local stone quarries to help generate income for their families. Ultimately, we're trying to make this school self-sustaining by farming crops and making products that can be sold in the local markets. Right now, our priority is to raise money to pay for teachers, cooks, security, nurse, etc at the school. Just AUD $17,000 is enough to pay all these salaries for 1 year. If you can possibly spare a few bucks, it would mean the world to me if you could click the link below and donate. If you can't, no worries. But maybe you could help share this link with the people in your network. https://www.mycause.com.au/page/242757/kitojo-empowered-girls-school-uganda/1 This is a good thing. Merry Christmas! #fundraising #breakthecycle #empoweringwomen

On today’s date in 1874 the Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham, England. He was christened “Gustavus Theodore von Holst,” and his early works were published under that name, but he removed the Germanic “von” after World War I broke out in 1914. At the Royal College of Music, Holst studied composition and became the close friend of fellow student Ralph Vaughan Williams. For a time, Holst earned his living by playing trombone in theater and light music ensembles, and later with a British opera. In 1905, he took a teaching post at the St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, a post he kept until the end of his life. He only composed on weekends or during his summer vacations. It took him two years to write his most popular work, the orchestra suite “The Planets,” whose success baffled and dismayed Holst. “If nobody likes your work,” he argued, “you have to go on just for the sake of the work, and you are in no danger of letting the public make you repeat yourself.” True to his word, Holst disappointed many admirers who kept hoping he’d write another big orchestral showpiece like “The Planets.” He never did.

Feeling like the world can't survive 2020? Take a few minutes to meet 15-year-old Adarsh Ambati of San Jose, Calif., winner of the Innovation prize in the 2020 International Young Eco-Hero Awards to discover why there is hope. Adarsh and 16 other 8-to-12-year-olds and 13-to-16-year olds were recognized this month for their contributions to global sustainability. Adarsh's story is an inspiration that will get you looking at your world with a new eye for positive change. He's also one of the most well-spoken young people you'll meet. He explains how everyone can take action with clear and inspiring lessons he learned after inventing a neighborhood sprinkler monitoring system at age 11 during California's drought. His inspiration was waste he observed around him on a drive when he saw a sprinkler running during a rare rainstorm in the Bay Area.Adarsh took about a year to develop a Raspberry Pi-based controller that connects water sensors, weather data, local watering regulations, and social media to provide local watering guidance. He trialed the device with 10 neighbors and found that they could have saved 50,000 gallons of water in just two months. His $50 device was a fraction of the cost of competing sprinkler control systems but he went for two years without gaining any traction with local utilities until his project won MagPi Magazine's 2019 Coolest Projects USA competition. The recognition was followed by support from Raspberry Pi CEO Phil Colligan and local utility Lake Canyon Mutal Water Company in nearby Los Gatos, Calif., which is planning to trial the device with its customers. At 15, he's got a successful invention and, as a side-gig, founded Gro-STEMs, a site that sells succulents to provide support to technology training at San Jose's LifeMoves Homeless Shelter and the Aarti for Girls School for abandoned children in Kadapa, India. What Adarsh learned would take a lifetime for many people in Silicon Valley, and we urge you to listen to his approach to innovation and the importance of taking criticism constructively, even when it isn't offered constructively, to develop a successful technology product. He breaks down his three key ideas for sustainable innovation so that anyone can apply changes to the world they find, a world often built on wasteful practices that can be improved. His persistence is an inspiration. You'll learn a lot from him and we hope you come away from the conversation as energized was we did.

One of the issues that this movement has shone a light on in South Africa is the racist systems that occur in Model C and private schools. There have been many calls for elite schools across the country to reform their policies that directly or indirectly discriminate against certain students. This has inspired a lot of people to speak up on their own experiences. And that is how a girl's school has a very forward thinking role to play in society."All the books discussed throughout this series are available at Apple Books, via this link: https://apple.co/ideasmatter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You can come for a really sick lineup and know that you’re getting some feminism mixed in there. Being a woman in the music scene is very different from being a man in the music scene. Playing classical violin is very different that playing rock violin. And Anna Bulbrook knows a lot about these differences. Anna has been the violinist for Airborne Toxic Event and Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros. She grew up playing the violin classically, but everything changed after college when she realized that she loved to play her instrument in a less traditional venue. Years later, after touring with some great bands, she found a new passion: creating space for women in the world of rock and music festivals. Her new venture GirlSchool, is just that: a music festival by, for, and in support of women. Listen into this awesome episode as she talks about the life of a career musician, what it’s like being the only female in the band, and the moment that lit the spark for her latest project. In the process of letting that classical violinist go, I was free to be open to what it would look like for violin to be valuable in other ways. Autumn Graves, Head of Girls Preparatory School, Atlanta, knows that very independent school's dream is to get on the map as the school for [fill in the blank] to boost their brand recognition. You can do the hard work of branding and marketing (and you should), but you can also get creative and think outside the box. Autumn created Mad, Bad and Dangerous, a conference on entrepreneurship for girls and women, to do just that and more. The response to this event has been overwhelmingly positive with requests to hold it in other cities. Ever entrepreneurial, GPS is in the process of licensing it so that other organizations, particularly those with a female based mission, can launch one in their area. This podcast is bound to make you want to “ditch expectations and start something” yourself to put your school on the map. For show notes and more brilliant ideas and brain food for school MarCom, go to http://www.inspiredsm.com/podcasts/. While there, sign up for our newsletter to make your job easier.   Every independent school marketer’s dream is to get their school on the regional, national or international map as the school for [fill in the blank]. We all want our school to be known for something to boost our brand recognition. We also want our local communities to know what lies behind our gates, bust myths and misperceptions, and promote positive word-of-mouth. So how do you make a name for yourself? You can do the hard word of branding and marketing (and you should), but you can also get creative and think outside the box. That’s exactly what Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, TN did two years ago with the launch of Mad, Bad, and Dangerous, a conference that promotes entrepreneurship in women and girls and encourages them to “ditch expectations and start something.” It’s the brainchild of Autumn Adkins Graves who arrived as GPS’ new head of school in July 2014, gave birth to a baby boy at Thanksgiving, and welcomed Chattanooga to campus for the first MBD in February 2015.  Autumn loves to tell the tale of the three female founders of GPS who were entrepreneurs of their time. Autumn saw this event as a continuation of their work to educate and advance girls and women. - See more at: https://inspiredsm.com/blog/put-your-girls-school-map-mad-bad-and#sthash.W9DKnDF1.dpuf
