Welcome to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast, talking about the Dutch blackened death metal band God Dethroned with their 12th studio album The Judas Paradox. While this band certainly has its slight black metal vibes, I've always seen them as more of a melodic death metal band. Their guitar riffs have always been calm and groovy. Two years ago, God Dethroned announced they had switched record labels to sign with Rising Phoenix Music for their next full-length. Fast forward to about two months ago when they released another new song titled "Rat Kingdom". This time around I became very excited because the new song seemed to be leagues superior to the previous single they dropped two years ago. The 2nd single released happens to be both the album title track and the first song on the album. I gotta mention the use of choir in the mix. It's a fantastic addition and sounds completely new. "The Hanged Man" is a song that kicks some serious ass with its Deicide vibes. The layered vocals make it sound extra demonic and it even reminds me of the song "Conquered By Sodom". There's also an old school sounding guitar solo on this one. It's one of the shorter songs but it's definitely a standout. Moving on we have an interlude track labeled as "Black Heart" which is only 51 seconds long. It's a dissonant choir practicing their vowels with church bells ringing. But it leads straight into that song that I mentioned earlier called "Asmodeus". This time I really paid attention to this song so I could absorb every note being played. I wanted to really study this one to see if my opinion of this song would change. The results? When I compared this album version of the track to the music video, there weren't any changes made in the sound mixing. It still sounded like the one and only stale track this band has ever made. It felt soulless compared to every banger this band has produced in the past 27 years. I guess a dud was bound to happen sooner or later, although it did sound better than I remembered. Maybe because this time I had a clear head. "Kashmir Princess" is another song where I remember the riff. As monotonous as it was, I was slightly reminded of one of their earlier works. Not saying that Dave Meester had recycled any riffs but I did get the "Rusty Nails" feeling, albeit, not as heavy. The next track really picks up the pace again to the God Dethroned we all wanted. "Hubris Anorexia" begins with three long screams that are layered in succession. It's here where I have to give both Henri and Dave credit for their winding guitar efforts. Dave also continues to show off his skills as a shredder in "The Eye of Providence". "Hailing Death" is another banger that will make you shout "Hailing Death" every time they say it throughout the song's first minute. This one has another gorgeous guitar riff at the halfway point of the track. Too bad it doesn't last long. It does make a very brief return towards the end of the song which fits as a neat little outro. "Broken Bloodlines" wastes absolutely no time going hard and fast from the first fucking second! The speed of the guitar chugs are aggressively heavy and will make any Taylor Swift fan's head explode. And finally we come to the last song on the album "War Machine". When I saw this song title, I automatically assumed it was a Black Sabbath cover but then I thought, wait a minute, Six Feet Under already did a cover of that. As I listened to this song, I figured out right away that this is an original song by God Dethroned that simply has a name that has been used before. The song is okay, but not their best work. I feel like "Hailing Death" should've been the last track because it had the audio fade out at the end. I feel like it would've worked a lot better. So what's the verdict? God Dethroned has never had a bad album and The Judas Paradox isn't their first. It is not a disappointment by any means. I'm going to rate The Judas Paradox a 7.5/10.

Ariën is de drummer van Epica. Zij traden 5 november 2023 op bij The Rock Circus en daar spraken hem vlak voor hun optreden. Hij zit sinds 2007 bij de band. Daarvoor zat hij vooral in Death Metal bands zoals God Dethroned. Welk album was belangrijk voor hem, hoe is hij drummer geworden, wat was zijn domste fout en hoe was het om van de zomer voor Metallica te openen en hij heeft hij de heren gesproken? Welcome back to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. I'm Xander and today we are looking at the debut album from Haliphron titled Prey. This symphonic blackened death metal band from The Netherlands has given us a new modern art masterpiece. This band may have clearly been inspired by old school acts but I assure you that they have still managed to produce stellar content that doesn't sound like anything recycled with the exception of another pointless skipable intro track. The song structures are all completely original musical scores. Haliphron has keyboard work that gives off that old piano sound. Judging by the music video for the song "Human Inferno", David Rojas appears to be using an electronic keyboard so I'm sure he just has it on a particular setting to produce those haunting keys. As for that song I will say that the keyboard seems to have more of an echoing cathedral vibe as if it's tuned to an organ setting. There's even church bell rings scattered throughout the track and a choir background recording thrown into the mix. While we're still on the subject of my favorite things, let's go ahead and praise my favorite song on this album "The Resistance". If you're not yet convinced that this band is the lovechild of Septicflesh and Dimmu Borgir then you will be by the end of this song. It is the perfect blend of gothic classical music with traditional melodic black-n-roll style vocals performed by Marloes Voskuil. I knew there were other reasons to enjoy this band, especially since this is Frank Schilperoort's new side project band. You might know him as the drummer for God Dethroned. As a long time fan, this was an amazing discovery. His rhythm and speed are noticeable in the studio mixing throughout the entirety of this record. Notably the drums really stood out in the opening track "The Killing Spree". It begins with a drumroll and the guitar chugs are in sync with the keyboard towards the end of the song which makes the whole thing extraordinary. The last minute of that song sounds eerily reminiscent of new age Cradle of Filth, a band that I am also a huge fan of. "Mother of All Evil" might be a somewhat generic song title but the music is anything but cliche. Forgive me if I butcher the pronunciation of these guy's names but the two guitarists, Ramon Ploeg and Jeroen Wechgelaer make their basic riffs sound good. The whole band is a breath of fresh air and the keyboards do a great job of smoothly tying everything together. The beginning of the song "Perfect Existence" displays a sweet bass solo from Jessica Otten. It's just a shame we don't hear much else from her through the rest of the album. The keyboard is my favorite aspect about this group as I feel like it is a key component, full pun intended. This one just might be my 2nd favorite song as it is certainly one of the more symphonic tracks. We even get a nice guitar solo in this one. Then we get the album title song "Prey" which delivers impactful moments such as the evil choir and the guitar riff during the song's mid-point. Very calm and melodic and then leads into a nice groovy solo. Another thing that I really appreciate is the length of these songs. They all seem to surpass the 5 minute mark but never the 7th. I also enjoy the old middle eastern feel of the intro to "Schizophrenia" which is considered a bonus track. I also really like the creepy little girl voice in the middle of the song telling us that we're going to die. It's a nice touch that truly adds to the dark atmosphere that this band has crafted. It also does that thing where the whole band stops for a second then then comes back. The final track "Unidentified Mass" was actually the first single the band put out last year. It provides listeners with a very ominous tone that will stick with people for years to come. As I said earlier, this is my current favorite of the year. I'm giving Haliphron - Prey a rightfully earned and well deserved 9.5 out of 10.

Acanthrophis is a blackened death metal band who formed in Milwaukee in spring of 2016 with the hopes of recreating and progressing upon the approach of ’90s bands like Dissection, Naglfar and God Dethroned. While modern takes on extreme metal have gone a more abstract route, Acanthrophis seeks to return to the use of melodic structures to thematically express their take on black and death metal through complex yet dynamically concise songwriting.
