Sleep and Sorcery | Folklore & Fantasy-Inspired Sleep Stories

Redeem the memory of Medusa in tonight's sleep story, inspired by Greek mythology. In tonight's story, you are an immortal Olympian – a member of the Greek Pantheon. You visit a deserted island where the memories of an ancient past are forever bound in stone. Here, you intend to right the wrongs of your past, makes amends, and to redeem the story of a figure forever remembered as monstrous: Medusa. This story is a retelling of the classical myths surrounding Medusa and the Gorgons. I've taken a number of liberties with the sources to offer an adaptation that fits the tone of Sleep & Sorcery, but some of the themes of this tale may skew a bit mature for younger listeners. If you listen with kids, parental discretion is advised. Music: A Glimpse of Avalon by Flouw, Gentle Winds by Ethan Sloan, Via Epidemic Sound Sleep & Sorcery is a folklore and fantasy-inspired sleep series. My name is Laurel, and I'll be your guide on tonight's fantastical journey. Sleep & Sorcery is one part bedtime story, one part guided meditation, and one part dreamy adventure. Follow along with my voice for as long as it serves you, and when you're ready, feel free to let go of the story and relax into sleep. If you're still awake as the story comes to an end, I'll guide you through a meditation for rest and vulnerability. - ✨Order the Sleep & Sorcery book!✨ https://www.crossedcrowbooks.com/shop-crossed-crow-books/p/sleepandsorcery Sleep & Sorcery: A Collection of Enchanting Bedtime Stories, Rituals, and Spells for Meaningful Rest, unlimited paperback now available from Crossed Crow Books. As both the eldest and youngest child of the great titan Kronos, and the Greek goddess of hearth and home, Hestia was incredibly important in almost every sphere of Greek daily life. The question we're asking today is why.In this episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes is joined once again by the University of Bristol's Dr Ellie Mackin-Roberts as they delve into the elusive, but fascinating figure of Hestia and uncover just how Hestia could be the eldest and youngest Greek God all at the same time.Presented by Tristan Hughes. PARTY PLEASER: Shirleon joins Melvin in summarizing Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, the forgotten sequel to Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Mythical monsters abound in this YA-flick, and the two have a fun time chattin' what works and what doesn't in this swan-song of the Percy Jackson theatrical film series. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 22-minutes playing a Disney Trivia Game that has some pretty dang difficult questions. Can you guess more correctly than Shirleon? (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The first 10-minutes of the film are expediently-well paced, which for Melvin was a good sign. The "Fantasy Racism" from Annabeth to the cyclops Tyson gets to be a bit too much. It's very one-note.When the Three Fates Taxi scene took place, despite evoking Harry Potter 3, Melvin thought to himself, "Oh, I think I'm going to like this movie.".Percy's character arc is simple, and not all that explicit, but it's very much about the confusion between a found-family and a born-family, as well as concepts of faith.Tyson's cyclops CGI is off-putting, which is made worse when we see a cyclops in a flashback and it looks awesome.Jake Abel plays Luke as this character who likes being the irritating antagonist but is also really, really chill.Rewriting scenes, because that's what you do on a podcast. There's a mutuality and wanting more cost or risk within the Percy Jackson films, but that will never happen because there will never be a third film.Recommendations:One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware (2024)Shesmadeofwords PodcastLake Mungo (2008)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Kym and Will quickly get into an argument, but Will soon returns to his duties and tells Lauren to visit the infirmary and take the day off. Will and Kym go on patrol, discussing what they think is up with Lauren. They very quickly get distracted by the Circus Royale, a troupe with names from the Greek Pantheon. We learn that this troupe was started 15 years ago by Viscount Radcliffe, for whose ball the APD is providing security on February 17th. The circus is made up of homeless Greychapel orphans and the Viscount bought his title. Athena challenges the crowd to a marksmanship duel with Artemis, and Kym shoves her watermelon off to Will to accept. The troupe seems antagonistic towards the APD, despite Kym's success. Back at the APD office, Lauren is being seen at the infirmary. As she lies there, prone, Kieran checks in on her, feeling guilty. She comes to a decision - she needs to talk to Kieran.

One of the foremost occultists of the modern era, Travis McHenry has written books on the history of the tarot and a memoir about his ten-year research study into paranormal phenomena. A native of rural Pennsylvania, Travis grew up surrounded by the folklore of the Appalachian Mountains, which shaped his desire to uncover and share the historical truths hidden behind mythological stories. He began studying the dark arts in the late 1990s when he stumbled upon a secretive coven of witches who subsequently befriended him and allowed him to publish the first written history of their magical tradition. Travis has been a student of many religions, including Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism and the Greek Pantheon, and was an ordained deacon in the Baptist Church. This diverse spiritual background has given him a unique insight into harnessing the divine energies found in cultural groups around the world. This episode, while being a total goat rope, was hysterically fun and INCREDIBLY informative. Forget the weird audio, cell phones, and doorbells ringing. There is accidental belching, dogs whining and genera merriment... reverence and mirth. Megan talks extensively, and with great knowledge, about the Greek Pantheon, her worship of Hestia, and her walk as a Priestess of Hera. When we think of the Goddess Hestia, the Goddess of the Hearth and the Home, she is not seen in many myths in Greek Mythology. She is never getting involved in revenge or wars but always maintaining the enteral flame on Olympus. But she is very essential to the Greek Pantheon because she stands for the importance of Family. So many of the Gods, and ourselves, overthink the bonds that we have with our family because, like Hestia, they are always there to the point where we sometimes forget. So come and join me and dive deep down into how Hestia keeps her enteral bond with her family going. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
