Vanessa Magula went from being a Hamilton superfan studying pre-health at UCLA to being cast as the standby for all three Schuyler sisters on the Philip tour. No, for real. Vanessa has always been a self-described theatre kid, evidenced by the fact that Deaf West's Spring Awakening is what inspired her to minor in Disability Studies, but it took her a while to take the leap and be a full time performer. After going to an open call for Hamilton in 2016 and being given a literal golden ticket for a callback, everything changed as Vanessa realized that - whether she booked Hamilton or not - this is what she wanted to do. In between yearly Hamilton auditions, Vanessa thrived in the New York City improv comedy scene and even ended up collecting Yondr pouches during Freestyle Love Supreme's Broadway run. Come join our instant bff vibes as we talk about our love of Hamilton (Vanessa saw it in September of 2015 hello!), Anessa Folds, Utkarsh Ambudkar (UTK), Lin's Warriors, and tons of other stuff. Ali Stroker is a trailblazing actor and advocate who joined the Little Kids, Big Hearts podcast as a guest Qook-a-lacka on our episode focused on inclusion. Today, Ali is back — out of character, as her amazing self — to talk with LKBH Host Todd Loyd about her own experiences with disability and inclusion. ❤️ She reflects on what Scarlett and Zach said on the episode: "When I hear Scarlett talking about horseback riding: It felt like she was explaining something that was so normal. And that, to me, is progress."❤️ She shares her own personal motto — Turning Limitations into Opportunities: "It can apply to somebody with a disability or not because as human beings, we have limitations. It's part of existing in the world."  ❤️ She talks about being a mom with a disability — and how being a mom in a wheelchair affects her parenting and her son's independence. ❤️ She talks about the power of "inclusive playgrounds." "I never had one inclusive playground growing up, and to this day, I still go to the playground and I have this like funny feeling in my stomach because it was a place of confusion and shame and frustration for me as a child ... Every kid deserves that freedom and that ability to play in an outdoor space with their friends."❤️ She talks about a moment when she was in 1st grade and her PE teachers included her in a lesson on "how to skip," which changed her life. "Thirty-one years later, I still remember it because it felt like I was included and someone had taken a little bit of time to get creative and make me feel like I was learning a new school too, and that I could be a part of the group in moving...And that meant everything to me, everything!" ❤️ She talked about her children's book "Ali and the Sea Stars," which was based on her own experience as a six year old being introduced to musical theater by her neighbor on the Jersey Shore. "It basically set my entire life journey of  becoming a musical theater and actress and everything that I do now." ❤️ She shares advice for kids with disabilities who want to try something new that hasn't been done before. Ali Stroker is a Tony Award winner for her role as ‘Ado Annie' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! She made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway in Deaf West's acclaimed revival of Spring Awakening and the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony. She was a series regular on the Netflix series, Echoes, and starred in the Lifetime holiday film, Christmas Ever After. Ali recurred in the final season of Netflix's Ozark and in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. She co-wrote the novel, The Chance to Fly and its sequel, Cut Loose!; and she wrote the children's book, Ali and the Sea Stars. She was recently seen opposite Matthew Broderick in Babbitt at Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC and played 'Lady Anne' in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Richard III. She's performed her one woman show all over the country. On this kidventure episode, two kids — Scarlett and Zach — talk about their disabilities and share their experiences with inclusion (on inclusive playgrounds and in other contexts). As Scarlett explains, inclusion "means that everybody can play, no matter your disability or how you walk or how you roll or anything like that."After a chat on Earth, the kids and Todd travel on the colors of the rainbow to the Land of Qook-a-lackas, where they meet a Qook-a-lacka friend, Quinnly, who is trying to figure out how the Qook-a-lackas and their new neighbors, the Link-a-doos, can play TOGETHER. The Qook-a-lacka's favorite sport, Quibble, is played on the ground with a big ball — while the Link-a-doos' favorite sport, Loop-a-launch, is played in the sky with a little bouncy ball. The kids and Todd help Quinnly to brainstorm a whole new game (Quibble Launch!), which has special rules and a two tier playing field that is perfect for the new neighbors to play together!Little Kids, Big Hearts was THRILLED to be joined on this episode by guest star Ali Stroker, who plays the role of Quinnly. Ali Stroker is a Tony Award winner for her role as ‘Ado Annie' in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! In this week's episode I sat down with Joshua Castille and Caden Zane Marshall. Joshua is a Deaf performance artist who strives to form meaningful collaborations that explore the boundaries of art. He has worked on various projects in different roles including ASL master, director, actor, set designer, and more. Caden is a seasoned performer, American Sign Language interpreter, and influencer. Caden's 15+ years of experience in the theatre community has led him to focus on topics of queer activism and advocacy for inclusive spaces and works of art that highlight underrepresented communities. We discuss how shows like Deaf West's Big River and Spring Awakening revolutionized how Broadway saw deaf people on stage, advocating for theater that incorporates rather than tokenizes, why we need to have deaf and disabled people in the rooms where decisions are made and much, much more. Broadway has body issues. What is a Broadway Body? Broadway has long preserved the ideology of the "Broadway Body": the hyper-fit, exceptionally able, triple-threat performer who represents how Broadway musicals favor certain kinds of bodies. Casting is always a political act, situated within a power structure that gives preference to the Broadway Body. In Broadway Bodies: A Critical History of Conformity (Oxford UP, 2023), author Ryan Donovan explores how ability, sexuality, and size intersect with gender, race, and ethnicity in casting and performance. To understand these intersectional relationships, he poses a series of questions: Why did A Chorus Line, a show that sought to individuate dancers, inevitably make dancers indistinguishable? How does the use of fat suits in musicals like Dreamgirls and Hairspray stigmatize fatness? What were the political implications of casting two straight actors as the gay couple in La Cage aux Folles in 1983? How did deaf actors change the sound of musicals in Deaf West's Broadway revivals? Whose bodies does Broadway cast and whose does it cast aside? In answering these questions, Broadway Bodies tells a history of Broadway's inclusion of various forms of embodied difference while revealing its simultaneous ambivalence toward non-conforming bodies. Currently starring as Cinderella in the Broadway revival of “Into The Woods”, Krysta Rodriguez is a talented actor, singer, and dancer with countless Broadway, TV and film credits. As the world starts to adjust to the new normal, she talks about her life and being thrust back on stage in a well-received show, which was completely unexpected for her. Playing the role of Cinderella made her realize that while it's fun to watch a show, it's even more fun to perform because there's “no bottom to it”. She reflects on how said role gives her a fresh perspective of Cinderella, and what the pressures to become a mother means. For Krysta, it was her search for fun that made her come back to acting, and with all her accomplishments and fulfilled dreams, she can still find fulfillment in different ways. Her dream of theatre leads her to her bigger "dream of life", which includes traveling, home design, and having meaningful relationships. From playing iconic people like Liza Minelli to iconic characters like Cinderella, she tries to give a fresh take by finding a lifeline as to how she and these characters are alike. She recalls her "Spring Awakening"days, the impact it has on her, and the bond she formed with the cast, most especially with the Deaf West revival cast, which was also the time she was going through therapy after getting diagnosed with cancer. Krysta opens up about her healing journey, why she decided to go public about it, her blog, ChemoCouture and how it became her form of activism, and personal growth as her number one life motivation. Krysta Rodriguez is a talented actress and singer with countless stage and tv credits under her name. She made her Broadway debut in the short-lived 2005 jukebox musical "Good Vibrations". Later on, she became a replacement for the role of Bebe in the Broadway revival of "A Chorus Line". Krysta has also played many ensemble and understudy parts in the Broadway productions of "Spring Awakening", "In the Heights", and the regional production of "The Boy Friend" directed by Julie Andrews. Her other stage credits include "What We're Up Against", "A Chorus Line", "The Addams Family", "First Date", “Hercules”, and “West Side Story” among others. She is also best known for her tv roles as Ana Vargas in "Smash", Summer Henderson in "Trial & Error", Maxine Griffin in "Quantico", and Ms. Cruble in "Daybreak." Her other tv credits include "Inside Amy Schumer", “Gossip Girl”, and “Halston” where she plays the role of Liza Minnelli. Her film credits include "The Virginity Hit", "My Bakery in Brooklyn", “The Bitch Who Stole Christmas”, and “Killing Diaz”. In 2015, Krysta was diagnosed with breast cancer, and started a blog, ChemoCouture.com to share her journey during chemotherapy as well as fashion, beauty, and wellness advice. That same year, she also returned as Isle in the Deaf West Theatre production of "Spring Awakening" as well as its Broadway production. She is currently starring as Cinderella in the 2022 Broadway revival of “Into The Woods”.   Connect with Krysta: Instagram: @krysta_rod Website: krystacouture.com and www.curatedbykr.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast TikTok: @thetheatrepodcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Hot, hot, hot, and it t'weren't global warming. Actor, producer, singer, songwriter, Constantine Maroulis, who rocketed to stardom on American Idol (I met him in the green room at his first appearance on The Tonight Show that season), filled us in on the before, during, and after, even singing us a bit of his audition for Simon & company. Always passionate, fun, and full of energy, Constantine gave us the skinny of growing up with a talented older brother (and sister), playing sports, doing theatre, and fronting a band, wanting and doing it all. Before Idol fame, he'd already gotten his Equity card and toured with Rent. Humble ending there led to the life-changing opportunity that he seized big time. Such great insights into the behind-the-scenes. His premature departure (placing 6th) was all part of his master plan in a way, he used being an underdog to his advantage anyway. In a big way. Starring on Broadway in Rock of Ages and garnering a Tony Award, followed - as well as more Broadway, playing and recording rock, doing Tony-nominated work as a producer of Broadway's revival of Deaf West's Spring Awakening, TV and independent feature appearances, he's got a new Broadway show he's working on, a new album, Until I'm Wanted (love Try), recorded during the pandemic, and he's out there performing and accessible. He's vaxxed, boosted, and thrilled to be out there. For all things Constantine, his music and appearances: https://www.constantinemaroulis.com/ His beautiful, articulate daughter, Malena, joined us for a bit, a chip off the ol' gorgeous and got-it-all block. As he did the first time we sat down on my radio show 5 years ago, Constantine made me feel like an old friend. The conversation was warm, flowing, easy, and fun. Killer Casting

Every once in a while a film comes along that simply transports you with its sheer brilliance — the brilliance of the sea shining on a bright, crisp Gloucester morning  CODA is one such film that approaches perfection. CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) is many things at once, a coming of age story of a child finding her way into adulthood and independence; a rollicking chronicle of a loving hard working family; a damn funny movie that will in turn, touch, move, inspire and awe you. The success of a film like this hinges not so much on the story (it is a tale we have seen often), but on the casting of these wonderful roles who inhabit a world most of us have never experienced.  Ruby is the only hearing member of her family where her dad Frank, her mom  Jackie and her older brother Leo are all deaf. Those three roles are played by actors who are deaf in real life — which may seem like obvious casting choices, but in reality, actors who are deaf rarely get a chance to play roles this beautifully drawn. They rarely get to show off their astonishingly talent. But in this film, Troy Kotsur (who Lisa is starting a campaign right now for an Academy Award for this performance), Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant all get a chance to shine brightly. The precocious Ruby is portrayed in a tour-de-force by Emilia Jones. As final treat, look out for the spellbinding performance of Eugenio Derbez as Bernardo Villalobos, Ruby's music teacher.  In lesser hands, this film could easily have wallowed in mediocre cliche, but under the assured direction of Sian Heder and with that stellar cast, what shouldn't work does. What should be hackneyed, soars and what could easily be mawkish, will move you to tears. Joining us to give a true perspective on the portrayal of deaf characters in this film, is the amazing actress/writer/producer Antoinette Abbamonte who is also part of the deaf acting community in Hollywood. And a special shout out goes to our ASL interpreter Nicole Pancino who joined us for Antoinette's interview.   We could go ON for hours about this exquisite film .. in fact we almost do !  So stop reading this and listen in to our podcast right now. “I don't feel good about myself in the day unless I'm making something.” This inspiring and hysterical episode is just two gay, Jewish boys kibbitzing about our trajectories in the theatre while breaking down stereotypes and expectations. If you're a fan of the hit web series Indoor Boys, breaking heteronormitve barriers, selling projects, and… The Hindenburg… then this episode is for you.  Alex Wyse is an accomplished actor in tv/film and Broadway who not only performs, but his hyphens also include writer, director, and producer. From his earliest memories of being an aspiring child magician, he realized he too can also write a song, write plays, and create. After a college experience that was less than favorable, he began to write on his own work out of necessity. Like many multi-hyphenates, Alex also ran into the statement many people tell us - which is, “You have to pick one thing.” Together, Michael and Alex break down the idea of why picking one art form is outdated and, quite frankly, not helpful. The world today is more receptive to the multi-hyphenate than ever before, but people do still believe artists have to be stuck in the binary. How can your art defy genre and expectations?  Alex and writing/directing partner Wes Taylor have also struck gold. Together, they wrote an Emmy Nominated character in their webseries Indoor Boys, which Michael produced. Telling stories that influence change, no matter how big or small, is what Alex is about. Through whatever his hyphen, Alex wants to give space to people to tell the stories they are meant to tell. This episode was recorded on the day a straight actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for portraying a gay man, which infuriates Alex and goes against what Alex stands for. Alex says, “The way I can be a social advocate is through my writing.” Alex Wyse is an actor, writer, director, and producer. He co-created the digital series “Indoor Boys,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award, won twelve Indie Series Awards, and was acquired by Here TV. He has been seen on Broadway in Waitress, Spring Awakening, Lysistrata Jones, on Tour in Wicked, off Broadway in Ride the Cyclone, Bare, and Triassic Parq, and regionally at Hartford Stage, Deaf West, Paper Mill Playhouse, Cleveland Play House, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, and more. He's been seen on TV in “Iron Fist,” “Masters of Sex,” “NCIS: LA,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Modern Family,” “Agent X,” “Bad Judge,” “A to Z,” “Switched at Birth,” and “Bored to Death,” and on film in X/Y and Dating My Mother. He co-produced What the Constitution Means to Me on Broadway and on Tour. BFA: Boston University. In the segment You Got A Question? Ali Stroker is a groundbreaking performer! The spinal cord injury she suffered in an automobile accident at just two years of age has not held her back for one hot second. Ali made history in 2015 as the first actress in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway, in Deaf West's revival of Spring Awakening. Then in 2019 this trailblazer notched a few more firsts, to be nominated for AND win a Tony Award (Best Featured Actress In A Musical, for Oklahoma!). Ali and I discuss, among many things: how her family (including a New Jersey Coaches Hall-Of-Fame inductee father), as well as her community of Ridgewood, NJ, rallied in support following the accident, what it means to her to be an inspiration for actors/actresses who may be "differently abled", how excited she is for "Christmas Ever After", a movie she shot in August for Lifetime, to air in December, and much more. A go-getter spirit at heart, a spirit which has taken her from singing in church to singing on a Broadway stage, this Broadway veteran shares how she is finding new focus during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how her Girl From The North Country Family is helping sustain her. Jeannette Bayardelle is a Broadway veteran seen most recently as Mrs. Neilson in the new Bob Dylan musical Girl From The North Country. Her other Broadway credits include the revival production of HAIR as Dionne, and The Color Purple as Celie. Jeannette originated the role of Celie on the First National Tour of The Color Purple where she received an NAACP award for best lead actress in a musical. Other stage credits include the 10th-Anniversary production of Rock of Ages, touring productions of Rent and Deaf West’s Big River, as well as many other regional credits. Jeannette is the first Broadway actress to write the book, music, lyrics and star in her own musical, entitled SHIDA, which premiered Off-Broadway in NYC and went on to have successful runs at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge MA, The West Angeles Theater in Los Angeles, CA, as well as in London. Her success has landed her television appearances with Oprah and Live with Regis & Kelly, the opportunity to perform for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and work on Disney’s Princess and the Frog. Jeannette also created and stars in the new web series “I Take Thee Zoe". Jeanette shares with us how her experience with The Girl From The North Country has changed her life - from workshop, to the Public Theater stage, to Broadway - and refers to the show as her “church”. She couldn’t have known that when the Public Theater called saying they wanted her to be a part of this project, at that time just a reading, the Girl From The North Country family would be the one with which she would experience the COVID-19 pandemic. Believing there will be a renewed appreciation for live theater when it finally comes back, Jeanette is now patiently awaiting the approval of the COVID-19 vaccine so that she can share in this revival of theater when Girl from the North Country and Broadway return.  In this episode, we talk about:  Meeting and hanging out with Bob Dylan in his dressing room at the Beacon  How she began preparing for COVID back in February  How COVID is creating opportunities for change, both personal and societal  The differences in the rehearsal process for Girl From the North Country from other shows she’s done  The inspiration behind and process of creating SHIDA - her one woman musical  How her cast mates inspired her to learn guitar, and what the instrument has taught her about herself Connect with Jeannette: IG: @jbayardelle Twitter: @jbayardelle Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Why I'll Never Make It - An Actor’s Journey

This podcast mainly focuses on the artist and the creative, the actor or composer or director, etc. But in today’s episode I’m turning the tables and focusing on the audience, specifically those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Their access to what we do onstage is often limited and often times they can’t make it to the theater because there is no way provided for them to understand what is happening. That’s where sign language interpreters come in and provide access for this underserved community of theater-goers. (Click here for a full transcript of this episode at the WINMI Blog.) The history of ASL-interpreted shows is actually fairly young. It was not until the early 1980s that the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles would offer the first regularly-scheduled ASL-interpreted performances of theatre in the nation. This was spurred on by its own success with the play Children of a Lesser God in 1979, which went on to a Broadway production and won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1980. (Source: howlround.com, an essay by David Kurs) In fact, Children of a Lesser God had a Broadway revival a couple of years ago and I was grateful to have one of the actors from that play, John McGinty, on the podcast. (Listen to that conversation here: smarturl.it/johnmcginty) As I was putting together this episode, I contacted John again and asked him about the importance of ASL-interpreted shows: "It is imperative to show that audiences prefer the personal aspect that a great, certified, sign language interpreter can bring to a theater performance. It helps build a “family” and a sense of belonging in the audience for those who happen to be Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Also, once the audience sees that the show is interpreted, they will be able to leave and say, 'Hey, I saw a show that was interpreted.' This will at least build a foundation and awareness of the Deaf/HoH community in their future." Recently one of our FOOTLOOSE shows on Norwegian Cruise Lines was ASL-interpreted by two women who travel to many different events and venues to provide sign language interpretation, Heidi Johnson and Mia Engle. In all my contracts aboard ships I’ve never seen ASL done for any show, so it was a real honor to be a part of the night’s presentation and it was an even bigger pleasure to sit down with them and talk about the important work they do. These are some of the people and topics covered in this episode: Mairéad MacSweeney - Director of the Deafness, Cognition, and Language Research Centre at the University College London Children of a Lesser God - A play by Mark Medoff based on a story written about deaf characters for deaf actors in the late ‘70s—featuring a deaf woman named Sarah Norman who falls in love with a speech therapist named James Leeds. John McGinty - Deaf actor and advocate, who also teaches sign language David Kurs - Artistic Director of Deaf West theater company Prosody - the rhythmic structure, intonation, and stress in spoken and signed languages ---------- The time and expense needed to bring these guests and conversations to you each week is sometimes challenging but always rewarding. DEAF WEST PRESENTS: THE SOLID LIFE OF SUGAR www.latheatrebites.com 7.9 out of 10 - Above Average! www.latheatrebites.com Candid, uninhibited and visceral. A Deaf couple's relationship is revealed through their lovemaking in a startlingly intimate portrait of a marriage. Hello, I'm Patrick Chavis and you are listening to LA Theatre Bites Review of The Solid Life of Sugar Water Playing now at Inner City Arts in Downtown Los Angeles September 5th - October 13th, 2019. The Solid Life of Sugar Water gives you a raw, tragic and honest portrayal of a relationship. The ups, the downs and even bigger downs through the relationship of a deaf couple. The strong acting and voice over from the cast keep you and pull you in with some incredibly powerful moments. But it's also attached to other moments and ideas that seem more interested in sounding poetic then actually doing anything interesting. The Solid Life of Sugar Water is the story of a Deaf Couple. Alice played by Sandra Mae Frank and her partner Phil played by Tad Cooley. We get to experience an intense amount of intimacy as we watch the couple share their intimate moments during sex. Their stories of how they met and also a very tragic situation in their relationship. This is my first show at the Deaf West Theatre and also my first deaf show I've ever seen, and I loved how blocking wise the show was set up. I'm not deaf and I don't read sign much of the language being communicated in the way doesn't really communicate much to me besides the beauty of form you can admire without fully understanding something like not being able to read Japanese but being able to appreciate the art in creating the symbols. Because nothing is spoken out loud by the actors but from somewhere else, you feel like you're inside the actors heads the entire show. Even though these are deaf characters and they are communicating right in front of you with sign. Watching this show is like asking someone you just met, how they met, and they told you that and way, way more then you ever wanted to know. And in that way the show can feel a little heavy emotionally and feel monotonous. But it's also very human because of this very reason. The set of the play is dimly lit bedroom inverted so the bed is facing the audience as if we are looking down at the room from the ceiling. This is an adult show as a good majority of the show is about sex and all those spicy details about this couple's relationship. Why does this show work because you can feel the intimacy between Frank and Cooley. Sandra Mae Frank pulls off a heart wrenching and dramatic performance with phenomenal physical movement. I give the Solid Life of Sugar Water. A 7.9 out of 10 - It's Above Average! Thank you for Listening!

She made a historic debut in the Deaf West revival of Spring Awakening in 2015 as the first Broadway performer who uses a wheelchair. The Tony nominee is drumming up a lot of buzz for her performance at the Circle in the Square Theatre as the girl who "cain't say no." Having been paralyzed from the chest down since the age of two, "no" is a word Stroker also rises up to combat in her own life. She recently stopped by Show People with Paul Wontorek to discuss her positivity, adding her own flair to a classic character, which celebs she'd love to see the show and more.

The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales

Ali Stroker is unstoppable. We fell in love with her while she was on The Glee Project but in recent years has made history as the first person in a wheelchair on Broadway in the 2015 production of Deaf West’s Spring Awakening. From a very young age, all Ali has wanted to do is perform after the acting bug bit her when she was cast in a neighborhood production of Annie. She was recently seen in the off-Broadway production of Oklahoma! at St. Ann’s Warehouse, and can be heard in the upcoming podcast, Loveville High (lovevillehigh.com). In this episode, she speaks about disability awareness, representation, education, how she positively overcomes the daily struggles, and why she actually doesn’t prefer being called an ‘inspiration’ to others. Interview content begins at 3:58. Now called BrokeLA, it opens next month and has partnered with Spaceland Presents and the Regent for Anna's first year as the company's CEO. New "Kahnversations" Podcast with Actor Benjamin Schrader!   In this episode of "Kahnversations," we interview Benjamin Schrader. A Seattle native, Benjamin attended Cornish College of the Arts and began his professional acting career at The Village Theatre and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. In New York, he was part of the original 2007 workshopping team for Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Broadway mega-hit THE BOOK OF MORMON, and went on to be a member of the original TONY winning Broadway cast. Benjamin received a Grammy nod for THE BOOK OF MORMON Grammy Award-winning cast album. Schrader also starred on Broadway in AVENUE Q, the 2009 revival of RAGTIME, the 2004 Broadway revival of Deaf West’s BIG RIVER, and was instrumental in the development of the character Gabe in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical NEXT TO NORMAL. In 2013, Benjamin toured the country with the TONY Award-winning Broadway production of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, directed by the legendary actor/director Roger Rees. In Los Angeles, Benjamin recently won the Stage Scene LA award for the role of Freddy in Musical Theatre West’s DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. Other recent highlights include the Walt Disney Academy Award-winning animated feature FROZEN, where he can be heard as Brother Troll, and appearances on television in HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE and ABC’s REVENGE, among many others.  For three years, Benjamin served as the Executive Producer and Host of THE STAGE DOOR SUPPER CLUB, a nationally broadcast in-depth Broadway educational series for the “On Broadway” channel on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.  Benjamin is a prolific director having helmed PETER AND THE STARCATCHER for Raw Sills Productions at the Whitmore-Lindley, and the SiriusXM concert series at Rockwell Table and Stage. He is also a headlining magician at the world famous Magic Castle in Los Angeles, where he recently completed his one man magic play LESSONS IN DISHONESTY by magic legend Jim Steinmeyer. He also freelances as a director for other professional magicians. Outside of performing, for the past few years Benjamin has been a creative consultant for various high end bars and speakeasies in California. He designed the tiki cocktail program for Clifton’s Pacific Seas Room in downtown LA, Encino’s famed Sushi|Bar for celeb chef Philip Frankland Lee, and most recently he designed Magic|Bar, San Fernando Valley’s only magic and cocktail saloon.  Benjamin lives in Los Angeles. If you like “Kahnversations,” please leave a rating or review on our iTunes page!     There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

David J. Kurs is the producer and artistic director of Deaf West Theatre. Their 2015 production of Spring Awakening, an intermodal rock-musical adaptation of a controversial late-19th-century German play about growing up in a sexually repressive culture, had an extended run, and is headed for Broadway. Pick your format, whatever your format, and listen to/watch/read Mr. Kurs talk about all things involved in being an Artistic Director and his company’s second foray to Broadway, like: Why deaf actors make the best actors around. Why, unlike other Artistic Directors of nonprofits, DJ doesn’t want Deaf West to have its own venue. How Broadway can be more accessible. The challenges of marketing Deaf West productions to a mainstream audience . . . in Los Angeles. How Spring Awakening got started, and why it’s a symbolic production for the deaf community. The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Michael Arden is an actor, musician and stage director. He made his Broadway debut as Tom Sawyer in the 2003 Roundabout and Deaf West revival of Big River. He played the title character in Pippin for the World AIDS Day Broadway benefit concert in November 2004. His regional theatre credits include Pippin, God of Vengeance, Falsettoland, Tom Jones' Harold and Maude, West Side Story, Songs for a New World, The Common Pursuit and The Winter's Tale. He directed Deaf West Theatre's acclaimed Broadway revival of Spring Awakening. The production marked his return to Deaf West and featured a cast made up of both deaf and hearing actors, performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and English. On May 3, 2016 Arden received a Tony Award nomination in the category Best Direction of a Musical for his work on the Spring Awakening revival. Listen in to hear Michael and I talk about some things Spring and some things not, like . . . What it was like going to school at Juilliard . . . and how they reacted when he left early. Why there is a great theater scene in Los Angeles. How being a Director has made it both harder and easier for him to work for one as an Actor. What the heck is the Milan Conference and why does it make Spring Awakening ideal for incorporating hearing and deaf actors into the production? 2002 Symposium: Directing Revivals: At its 2002 Musical Theatre Symposium, SDCF hosted a panel on directing revivals featuring director/choreographers Jeff Calhoun (Big River 2003 Revival), Robert Longbottom (Flower Drum Song 2002 Revival) and Susan Schulman (Sweeney Todd 1989 Revival) and moderated by Victoria Traube. The panelists discuss how directing revivals is different and how it is the same as directing new work, particularly focusing on the relationship with composers, lyricists and bookwriters who are still alive and around to see their work revived. The conversation features in depth stories about the creative processes for Flower Drum Song, Grease, Sweeney Todd and the Deaf West revival of Big River, among others. Other topics include reviving classics, the director's interpretation, and rights and royalties for revivals. This recording is filled with fascinating anecdotes and lessons for both the enthusiast and the aspiring musical theatre director. Originally recorded - June 1, 2002.
