Kevin Bivona of The Interrupters joined me and we had a really cool conversation about how they're having so much fun on this final tour with Sum 41, the pressure that they felt being the first band every night on the Hella Mega Tour, finding time to work on new music for The Interrupters and other bands, what they need to have it feel like home on the road and one of the most ridiculous requests they saw a band make!
Artist Sam Grinberg started interning with The Simpsons in 2014. It turned into an actual job shortly after--a dream job! He joins us today to discuss the popular show, its possible ska connections and his own history with the genre. He's got a lot of history with ska. Sam grew up in New Jersey and used to go see tons of bands like Streetlight Manifesto and local legends Awful Waffle. He even drops some super obscure local ska band names on us like Stolen Oregano, Explosive Sheep, and The Nerd Who Ate St. Louis. Sam has also done a lot of artwork for ska bands. A short list includes Catbite, Kill Lincoln, Less Than Jake, Save Ferris, The Holophonics, the Too Hectic comps on Pay Attention Records (By Phil Lucas-Smith of Ska Punk Daily) and more. (He even did art for the Hella Mega Tour, which featured Fall Out Boy). Plus Sam talks about his other artwork like the Scumburbia series and his infamous "How To Skank" comic. We also learn how Sam got a job at The Simpsons, how he defines his art style, and how many tattoos people have gotten of his artwork. He talks about seeing Fatter Than Albert, Bomb The Music Industry and going to many shows at The Starland Ballroom and the Stone Pony. Plus he talks about going to the "It's a Ska World After All" at Disneyland. And we learn that one of his art teachers was Gary Panter, who created the characters for Pee Wee's Playhouse. And we discuss ska bands with Simpsons references and the ultimate Simpsons-themed metal-core band: Okilly Dokilly. A jam-packed episode! Support the show
Interview by Kris PetersAmyl & The Sniffers are fast becoming a festival band - for better or for worse.Whether it is their shock appeal, intense and unpredicatable stage show, or general apathy towards authority, one thing you can always guarantee from the infectious rock/punk outfit is that they will inevitably deliver the goods. After performing at most of the countries major home grown festivals it is only fitting that Amyl & The Sniffers join the line-up for a major international showcase. Not only have they earnt the right to represent on the big stage, they have also demanded recognition through sheer volume of performances and quality of material. This April Amyl & The Sniffers trek around Australia on The World Is A Vampire Tour, headlined by the Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction. They are seemingly an odd choice to support two heavyweights of a more rock inspired line-up, but going by past efforts will undoubtedly steal the show at some stage of the tour.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Dec Martens to discover more."It should be good," he enthused. "I'm really looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to playing some of those places out of the city."We bring up the fact that Amyl & The Sniffers have little in common with the two headliners, but in his typical laconic fashion Martens shrugs off the fact that their music might be a little on the heavier side for some of the fans there to see the two internationals."I think it should be good," he shrugged. "We're at least in our home territory, so there will be - even though we're different - we'll probably be a little bit familiar to people compared to when we did the Hella Mega Tour through Europe last year with Green Day, Fallout Boy and Weezer and I think a lot of that European crowd didn't know what to expect from us so we kind of just alienated the whole lot. Because we're at least a bit more accessible here in Australia hopefully we won't make the whole crowd feel weird (laughs)."In the full interview, Dec talks more about the run of shows, the strong Australian representation with RedHook, Battlesnake and local supports, the wrestling side show, potentially jumping in the ring, recent happenings in Amyl & The Sniffers, new music, losing out to The Wiggles at the ARIA's, getting their revenge, what to expect from their shows and a special challenge throwndown by HEAVY and accepted!

We chat with Aimee Interrupter and Kevin Bivona from The Interrupters ahead of the release of new album 'In The Wild', featuring the singles 'In The Mirror', 'Jailbird' and 'As We Live' featuring Tim Armstrong and Rhoda Dakar. They talk writing during lockdown and channeling Aimee's personal stories into the lyrics. We also talk following up the success of previous record 'Fight The Good Fight', which included the huge single 'She's Kerosene', and what they hope fans take away from their first listen to the new record. Plus, they reflect on joining Green Day on the Hella Mega Tour and look forward to their upcoming UK live shows.
Maybe you saw The Interrupters last summer, on the Hella Mega Tour with Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer. Or maybe you've heard their first hit single, She's Kerosene on the radio. Well, now, in the middle of their co-headlining tour with Flogging Molly comes their latest album, In the Wild.We talked with bassist and drummer Justin and Jesse Bivona about planning a good setlist, the effect of family on a band's rhythm section and just how damn cool Tim Armstrong is.In the Wild is out August 5th. For more information, check out their website or follow them on Twitter or Facebook.
Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer played Marlay Park in South Dublin yesterday, for their Hella Mega Tour but it seems like music fans got a little more than they bargained for. Andrea spoke to listeners who were there who told her about the queues into the venue of up to 2km long and streams of fans left stranded looking for a way to get home.
This episode is our first revisit of a topic previously discussed in an earlier episode of Thanks for Participating. Since we recorded our last episode about concerts in early 2021, there have been several more that we've been to together, including the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer, Fallout Boy, and Green Day. We thought it would be fun to make a part 2 in order to cover these further developments. Plus, Sydney joined an Indie rock band this year and we couldn't not talk about that. (Video Version) #VanWeezerReview #Weezer #AlbumReview Subscribe to our main channel - www.twitch.tv/doseofnerdacumen Van Weezer is the fifteenth studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on May 7, 2021 by Crush Music and Atlantic Records. Featuring a classic rock and hard rock inspired sound, the album was announced in September 2019 with an original release date of May 2020, coinciding with announcement of the band's participation in the Hella Mega Tour alongside Green Day and Fall Out Boy. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was delayed indefinitely and Van Weezer's release was delayed until May 2021, almost four months after the release of the band's previous album OK Human. Four singles were released ahead of the album's release; "The End of the Game", "Hero", "Beginning of the End" and "I Need Some of That". The album received generally positive reviews from critics. It debuted at number 22 on the US Billboard 200 chart with first week sales of 18,600. It reached its peaked at number 11 on the chart. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/support

With 75 million albums sold worldwide, Green Day is one of the best-selling artists of all time. In 34 years, the band went from being California teens in a punk rock band to Hall of Fame inductees in 2015. As of this year, Green Day continues to sell out arenas and stadiums with the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy (the latter inducted Green Day into the Hall, btw). When talking about Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, their fan base is practically split when discussing what their best album is. It's always a different answer every time. But this week, BC will be counting down their discography (including last year's "Father of All Motherf**kers") from worst to best. Where does your favorite rank? Tune in to find out! NOTE: My voice is going to sound a little weird on the 2nd half. I got sick during recording and took a couple days off to recover. Sorry for the weird vocals here. Patrick & Dave return to talking about music, but this one is a bit different. For the first time since the pandemic began, the guys actually attended concerts on opposite sides of the country. Patrick was attending the Garbage & Alanis Morisette concert at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA the evening that this Episode was recorded. Meanwhile, Dave attended the Hella Mega Tour the night before at Dodgers Stadium featuring The Interrupters, Weezer, Fall Out Boy, & Green Day. Dave gives his thoughts on probably the biggest tour of the Summer in one of the most iconic venues in all of baseball, while Patrick discussed what he was looking forward to from his event. The return of concerts, at this point in time, is certainly a big deal and isn't it ironic that the guys got to experience these huge cultural events a day apart from each other? Decided to lean into my alt-rock fangirl past in this week's episode. I attended the Hella Mega Tour featuring Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and Green Day, and had a lot of thoughts. I start by discussing initial observations, and then I get into how the set lists either helped or hurt the feelings of nostalgia the crowd experienced. Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! We're recording this episode from a premier club suite at Petco Park, thanks to this week's sponsor, the San Diego Padres. Our special guest this week is Jaclyn Lash, the Padres' vice president of special events. She joined the team in 2011 and oversees all events for the Padres and Petco Park, including concerts, game-day festivals, private and special events, and gatherings for the team. Before joining the Padres, she was at Jimmy Kimmel Live!, coordinating guest appearances and booking musical artists. We had to ask what it's like to meet and work with celebrities regularly, and she shares some fun stories (one including Kanye West!). Jaclyn is here to tell us how they transform the ballpark into venues for everything from the Monster Energy Supercross to The Links at Petco Park, a nine-hole golf course; and about upcoming concerts such as the Hella Mega Tour on Aug. 29 with Green Day, Fall Out Boy, and Weezer. You can see a schedule of more upcoming concerts here. In Hot Plates, the owner of RakiRaki Ramen opened a new restaurant, Matsuoka Pure Sushi, specializing in temari sushi and kaiseki bento. Karina's, a local institution for Mexican seafood, returned to downtown with the opening of a new cantina. Chef Kaci Goff of Wolf and Woman (and a podcast alum!) launched a new monthly dinner series, Lucky Cricket, with Taylor Berk, sommelier at Puffer Malarkey Collective. The dinner features several courses of Malaysian-Tamil cuisine and wines produced by female winemakers. In Two People, $50, Jaclyn is excited about Wolfie's Carousel Bar in Little Italy, which Troy just got a First Look at. Troy recommends the El Xolito hot dog at Barrio Dogg (located in Barrio Logan and Petco Park), and I got the El Borracho fries from Grand Ole BBQ inside the park. David and Troy got seafood without me and went to South Beach Bar & Grille in Ocean Beach for fried oyster tacos. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. One day I will live on the edge !!!! One day.” https://www.iheartradio.ca/news/britney-spears-vows-to-post-a-little-less-1.15824180 Singers Fred Durst and Jason Isbell are speaking up about the challenges of keeping fans safe as touring resumes while some people continue to refuse to get the COVID-19 vaccination. “In short, the system is still very flawed,” Limp Bizkit frontman Durst told Billboard. “Even if the performers, crews, staff, and promoters do their best to ensure safety on and behind the stage, that doesn't ensure the safety of the audience as a whole. “We are all in this together, and we all – individually and as a whole – have to make our best efforts to be as responsible and proactive as possible moving forward to combat and stop spreading COVID.” Limp Bizkit pulled the plug on its show last Friday in New Jersey only about an hour before it was scheduled to begin and then announced all remaining August dates have been cancelled. No reason was given but, in a statement, the band said it made the decision “out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the band, crew and most of all the fans.” Fall Out Boy pulled out of a several shows on the Hella Mega Tour with Green Day and Weezer last week due to a positive COVID-19 test within their circle. Lynyrd Skynyrd said it cancelled four concerts after guitarist Rickey Medlocke tested positive for COVID-19. And, last month, Foo Fighters scrapped a concert in Los Angeles when someone on its team tested positive. On Tuesday, Stevie Nicks said she was cancelling all of her scheduled 2021 performances. “These are challenging times with challenging decisions that have to be made,” Nicks, 73, wrote in a message shared on social media. “I want everyone to be safe and healthy and the rising Covid cases should be of concern to all of us." Isbell told fans on Aug. 9 he is “requiring proof of vaccination or a current negative test to attend all our shows, indoors or out. If the venue won't allow that, we won't play.” (Last month, Eric Clapton – who is fully vaccinated – took the opposite approach. “I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present,” the 76-year-old rocker wrote in a message on Telegram. “Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show.”) Isbell's Wednesday night show with Lucinda Williams in Houston was cancelled because, according to Isbell's label, “the venue was not willing to comply with the band's updated Health and Safety standards.” In a statement shared on social media, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion insisted it “fully supports” Isbell's COVID-19 policy but could not comply due to timing. “To implement a major change in policy such as what is requested will take more time than we have,” it claimed. Isbell said the statement is false. “The venue owner flat-out refused to even attempt to implement the policy,” he tweeted. Sally MacDonald, a local Fox news anchor – who did not disclose that she is the daughter of the Pavilion's CEO Jerry MacDonald – defended the venue in a tweet. “The pavilion statement doesn't say they weren't willing to comply. It says they couldn't implement a change like that on short notice. Like everywhere else they are short staffed, too.” COVID-19 Music Updates On Tuesday, Quebec's minister of health Christian Dubé announced that as of Sept. 1, vaccine passports will be required to access bars, restaurants and public events like concerts and festivals "to avoid another lockdown." In an interview with MSNBC, Isbell said he believes the people who work at all levels of the live music business understand the need to be responsible. “All the response that I've gotten from people in the business has been positive because they understand that we could go back to not working at all,” he said. “A lot of these smaller venues, they aren't going to re-open if they go through another round of shutdowns.” Isbell said they are up against “governors of certain states who want to kowtow to their political base and try to make people think that their freedom is being encroached upon.” He added: “I'm all for freedom but I think if you're dead, you don't have any freedoms at all so it's probably important to stay alive before you start questioning your liberty.” Citing an oft-repeated phrase from the U.S. Declaration of Independence, Isbell pointed out: “It's ‘life' and then it's ‘liberty' and then it's ‘the pursuit of happiness.' Those are in order of priority.” Queen guitarist Brian May has also addressed the refusal of some to protect themselves and others. “Anti-vax people, I'm sorry, I think they're fruitcakes,” the 74-year-old musician told The Independent. “There's plenty of evidence to show that vaccination helps. On the whole they've been very safe. There's always going to be some side effect in any drug you take, but to go around saying vaccines are a plot to kill you, I'm sorry, that goes in the fruitcake jar for me." https://www.iheartradio.ca/news/musicians-speak-up-about-struggle-to-keep-fans-safe-1.15823753 Thanks to John R. The NYC stop of the Hella Mega Tour (feat. Green Day, Weezer, The Interrupters and originally Fall Out Boy) marked Matt and Zach's first concert since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in America… So how did it feel to see live music after nearly two years of no shows? Did the experience make them feel confident in the concert industry's “return”, or do they still feel uneasy? That's what Matt and Zach discuss in the latest episode of “Am I Missing Something?,” a podcast where we analyze popular or unpopular bands, albums, songs or music trends in an attempt to figure out what we seem to be “missing.” The goal isn't to ridicule, but rather to gain a better understanding of what a majority of fans see or don't see in something that Matt and Zach simply can't wrap their heads around. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a slew of concert cancellations, but some of music's biggest stars are scheduled to play shows here this year and early in 2021.Now that New Zealand has eased its social distancing restrictions and is now at alert Level 1, concerts can ahead. However, whether the big names are able to play their shows here may depend on restrictions in Australia and immigration regulations at the time of the concerts. Here are four big shows still scheduled to go ahead.Rod StewartFingers remain crossed Sir Rod Stewart will be gracing Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium stage this November, the Otago Daily Times reports. But even if the Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer cannot get into the country in time to strut and sing this spring, a run of events are returning to the south as the grip of the global pandemic loosens in New Zealand.Dunedin Venues marketing and communications manager Kim Barnes said border restrictions were likely to be the deciding factor for the planned "Rod Stewart — The Hits! Tour 2020" on November 11 and Dunedin Venues was still awaiting an update from the promoter.Stewart is also booked to play two shows at Hawke's Bay's The Mission Estate on November 14 and 15.Fallout Boy, Weezer and Green DayThis powerhouse punk-rock "Hella Mega Tour" is coming to New Zealand for a show on November 20 at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium, and a second show two days later at Auckland's Mt Smart.According to the ODT, the Dunedin show is still listed as an upcoming event. The bands have cancelled their original Europe, North America, and Asia tour legs.Harry StylesThe former One Direction member is playing at Auckland's Spark Arena on November 23.Styles last played in Auckland in 2017.According to his social media accounts, Styles postponed his Europe and North America tours until 2021, so will he still make his way to New Zealand? Will the 2020 shows go ahead? The shows are still listed as going ahead on the promoter's website.A publicist for the three tours told the Herald it's a "wait and see" if any of the shows will need to be rescheduled - but referred to Live Nation for an official statement.Live Nation has been approached for comment.Elton JohnAlthough his Auckland concerts aren't scheduled until January 2021, the stakes are very high for Elton fans who may have missed out on seeing the star after he was diagnosed with walking pneumonia this year.He was forced to cut his February 16 Mt Smart Stadium show short when he fell ill and medics rushed to give him oxygen on stage. He was forced to end his show 16 songs into his 25-song setlist.Originally the star delayed his shows to later in the week, however he was not well enough to perform and postponed the shows until January 15 and 16, 2021.What's more, his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour could be the last chance to see the Rocketman singer live as he says he is retiring from touring.A promoter confirmed to the Herald "the dates are still firm"."We are working with Immigration on what options are possible and watching carefully to see what happens with the America's Cup and other international requests."Last week the New Zealand government announced it is granting border exemptions to America's Cup syndicates American Magic and INEOS Team UK to enter New Zealand.- Additional reporting Otago Daily Times

How did Byron Allen go from teenage stand-up to highly successful media mogul and entrepreneur? Byron thinks it has everything to do with growing up in Detroit, watching his dad working at Ford and internalizing that factory worker mentality. Of course, his mom was a big help too, working as a tour guide at NBC Studios so young Byron could watch and learn from Johnny Carson, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor and many others. Byron tells Marc how he found The Comedy Store, how he put in the hard work to get his own show on television, and how he came to own a media empire that includes The Weather Channel. Chaunté Wayans has a last name that adds a lot of pressure to a comedy career. She also happens to be the niece and cousin of many famous comedians with that last name. That's one reason she stayed away from comedy when she was younger, choosing instead to get into film and television production. When Chaunté was working as an editor, she started struggling with anxiety, which led to alcoholism, which led to multiple arrests. Chaunté talks with Marc about rebounding, embracing her own comedic identity on stage, and launching her stand-up career with encouragement from people like Tiffany Haddish and her uncle Damon.
