Tell us what you think of this episodeIn this episode we return to our chat with Ossie Wheatley.  He finished as a player in 1969 but before that he was already becoming involved in the administration of the game.To begin, he gives us an outline of his career, noting his involvement with English cricket form 1963 onwards.  He tells us the various committees on which he served and the roles he undertook including being a Test selector.  Latterly, he took up positions with the Sports Council of Wales.  Along the way he gives a bit of background to his career including his recollections of the development of junior cricket in Wales.  Most importantly, he intervened during the development of the ECB to ensure that the organisation would be known as the England and Wales Cricket Board, an insertion that became crucial, amongst other things, to attracting Test cricket to Wales in 2009.He asserts his belief in the importance of successful elite sports teams in the development of cricket in any particular place. We talk a little about Leslie Deakins, ex secretary of Warwickshire County Cricket Club and his impact on the club and creating Edgbaston as a Test ground. We talk about the Clarke Report in 1965, what it set out to do, who was part of the committee and what it achieved.  Along the way he talks about the nature of professional cricketers and the way they ensure they control the developments in the game and what might be the best way for cricket to develop.  He airs his concern that developments today may mean the success of a few ‘super' clubs at the expense of the others. He talks about the experience of being a Test selector which he was for two years from 1972 to 1974.We finish this episode by talking about how Ossie became Chairman of Glamorgan County Cricket Club in 1976.  The team was experiencing a crisis with player sackings, Majid Khan leaving the club and a challenge to the committees running of the club.  He talks about his deep concerns over the involvement of overseas players in the game and how it brought him to the point of standing down from the chairman's role.  He also talks about the poor facilities that existed in Wales for elite cricket and how that impacted on Glamorgan's fortunes. We talk briefly about Glamorgan's visit to Lords in 1977 for the Gillette Cup Final and end with Ossie's reflections on Glamorgan as a club and where it was in the late 70s and early 80s.

Cathy Devine, expert in sport policy at elite and participatory levels with a special interest in equality for girls and women.Corinne Kielty, cycling coach, ex Breeze Champion for British Cycling and cyclist.Tess McInnes, cycling club Welfare Officer and member of British Cycling. We discuss the UK history of women's exclusion from sport going back to the stated principle of Pierre De Coubetin: “this feminine semi-Olympiad is impractical, uninteresting, ungainly and improper; it is not in keeping with my concept of the Olympic Games: the solemn and periodic exaltation of male athleticism with the applause of women as a reward”.  It is extraordinary how widely this attitude prevailed into the 21st century.Excluding women from sport is part and parcel of women's designated roles in the public sphere as handmaidens, not participants; and how sport was and still is perceived as ‘unfeminine' and not for girls or women.Football was one of the first games that welcomed women, was popular with crowds but that ultimately women were banned due to the perception that men were losing out.  Cycling symbolised independence for women.  Gradually from the 1960s, women began to enter the professional and amateur arenas and successfully created both their own Olympic governing body and in the UK, a Women's Sports Council separate from their male counterparts. Up to the 1990s almost all women's sports were administered separately until the Sports Councils recommended mergers and men's sport still dominates today.  This takeover and deprioritising of women's sport has resulted in the stunting of girls and women's sports and how as a result, we have very little by way of a legacy to build on.  The lack of a longstanding popular culture of women's sport continues to discourage the visibility of women coaches and policy makers, which contributes to the lack of thought given to encouraging girls into sport. We discuss exclusion in schools, where non-traditional sports that might inspire girls are underinvested. Traditional team sports are cheaper to run and teachers hesitant to teach PE. Some girls enjoy traditional sports such as football, rugby and hockey, but are deterred by the lack of initiatives taken to make these spaces inclusive for girls, who experience a very different social conditioning to boys.We discuss sport culture in general; certain sports seem hostile to atypical males as much as females. The macho culture of sport is as problematic for some men as for women; women's sport is not the remedy or the refuge for men fleeing ‘toxic masculinity'.  There is the absurd and intolerable situation that trans men, trans women and women are all competing in the women's category. Men's sport meanwhile continues unaffected. Why is it not problematic for trans men to compete in women's sport, but it's problematic for trans women to compete in men's sport?  The culture of National Governing Bodies and men's sport in general has much work to do to address this.  Join the Women's Rights Network: Twitter - @WomensRightsNetWebsite: https://www.womensrights.network/#SaveWomensSports #womensrightsnetwork #fairplayforwomen #womensfootball #cycling #womenscycling #sexnotgender #football #olympics #scienceofsport

She founded GLAM+GO, a salon and blow-dry chain and membership program. Most recently, she co-founded Prospr at Work, a workforce management software platform for hourly and shift-based teams now used by some of the country's most recognizable brands to manage and connect their teams.David SiegelDavid Siegel joined the Los Angeles Sports Council and Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games as President and Chief Executive Officer for both organizations after a 22-year career with the LA Dodgers. He worked in every revenue producing department, most recently as Vice President of Global Partnerships after spending 10 years as Vice President of Ticket Sales. Under his leadership, the Dodgers achieved the highest attendance in Major League Baseball for five consecutive seasons.Santor NishizakiSantor Nishizaki is on a mission to create a happier workplace by helping organizations increase generational awareness and discover strengths that can elevate people to reach their full potential, something he has implemented in the boardroom as well as the classroom as he serves as the professor in multiple universities at an undergraduate and MBA level. Santor has served in leadership roles at both NASA and Disney Imagineering, where he was an integral part of the opening of Disneyland Shanghai. He'll be launching his first book this year, a guide on leading and working with Generation Z.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:Jordan Harbinger[4:38] - Jordan's ‘Connect Four'Find the ‘dead' networking contacts and bring them to lifeJordan uses a method he calls ‘connect four,' where he scrolls down through his messages and finds four connections someone else might consider ‘dead'— no recent messages, no potential. Then he reignites those conversations, often to striking results. How can you ‘connect four' in your own career?[6:52] - The Power of ReciprocationMake people happy to help you by helping them firstToo many people try to get something out of a connection before they've put in the work. Your first question when building a connection shouldn't be ‘what can they do for me?' It should be, what can I do for them?Erika Wasser[11:26] - How Being a Leader is Like Doing Stand-upWhy standing up in front of an organization is like standing up in front of a crowdAs a leader or a standup, you're always taking risks, taking chances, gauging your audience and changing course. Whether it's fundraising or making quick decisions or leading a team, the basic skills of paying attention to how you're perceived is essential.[16:49] - Planning Doesn't Replace Doing“Sometimes you just have to do the thing.”Don't let perfect get in the way of good enough, because perfect isn't happening. You can plan as much as you want, but planning doesn't replace doing. Sometimes you have to get knee-deep in a problem before you can begin to figure it out.David Siegel[22:50] - Never Say No to OpportunityYou'll never have experiences if you don't say ‘yes' when they arriveIn the first seven or eight years of your career, just say yes to every opportunity. Welcome to this month's episode of BFR Radio.  In exciting news, gyms are back open! During the COVID period a lot of people may not have had all of the equipment necessary for "traditional" strength training. So during the COVID period  I challenged myself away from more traditional high load lifting to create a hybrid strength program that worked around the constraints of not having access to lots of weight. The program involved combining  low load training (the max I lifted was 40kg). As I knew that this would be enough external load, I delved into my bag of tricks and used the addition of Isometrics (use of a tie down strap), lifting bands, Blood Flow restriction and Plyometric exercises with a goal to improve athlete performance. As I‘ve always advocated, there is no substitute for higher external load (i.e. mechanical stress) and therefore the addition of bands and isometric straps provided an additional external loading with the “minimal equipment” challenge and then the addition of BFR was using metabolic stress as a proxy for the mechanical stress that was missing.  I’ve been collecting both upper and lower body testing for a few months that has actually predated me even starting this type of training so my preliminary findings are quite interesting. Once I’ve put them together I’ll share with you the results.   In other BFR work, I’ve been working on BFR use framework. Consequently I’ve been increasing my literature reading. There is so much is so many different areas, so if there is anything of particular interest that you want to hear on the podcast let me know and I’ll review those papers.   Today’s guest is NSWIS Senior Coach, David Young who is the lead S&C coach for the Women’s national rowing team based out of Penrith in NSW. As I usually preview a paper before we go into this segment, I actually wished I’d waited for the Rowing Paper I reviewed a few episodes ago. With the information that David will share with us today, I feel that we could have really had a BFR rowing special. And add last month's episode review from Sam Halley on the effects of IPC on kayaking performance (with a potential for it to transfer to rowing performance) then this would have been a really sports specific episode.  I am sure you'll get a lot out of today's episode. David brings a wealth of coaching experience and he really brings some good practical take-aways for BFR use in an elite training environment. Some more information: David is a Senior S&C Coach with the New South Wales Institute of Sport, having previously worked at both the English Institute of Sport and the Sports Council for Wales. During his 16 years in High Performance Sport David has worked across a wide range of Olympic and Commonwealth sports. Since 2006, he has worked with rowing programs in the UK and Australia, being fortunate enough to support athletes to numerous World, Olympic and Paralympic medals.  His current role sees him deliver S&C services to Rowing Australia’s Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre based in Penrith. David has a Master’s degree from the University of Sydney and ongoing industry accreditations with the ASCA, UKSCA and NSCA. Ultrarunning History

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2019 32:03

By Davy Crockett  Yiannis Kouros from Greece is considered by most, as the greatest ultrarunner of all time. That is a bold statement, but there are few that dispute this statement. The late “Stubborn Scotsman,” Don Ritchie, is certainly in the conversation, Some can try arguing for certain mountain trail ultrarunners, but what Kouros accomplished, dominating for more than a 20-year period, and setting world records that have lasted for decades is nothing but mind-boggling. Every ultrarunner needs to know about Yiannis Kouros and his accomplishments. One of his competitors, Trishal Cherns of Canada, said, “There’s the elite, the world class, then there’s Yiannis.” Yiannis Kouros was born on February 13, 1956 in Tripoli, Greece, a city of about 20,000 people at that time. His father was a carpenter and the family lived in poverty. They did not always have enough food, requiring Yiannis to perform his first manual laboring at the age of five. He could not afford to go to the movies so he went to a stadium to run for fun. Sports was also a refuge from his family trouble. Kouros explained, “I had a misfortune in my family. When I was born, my father thought I was not his own, he was of course wrong. For that reason, he used to lash out on me. My mother was uneducated and instead of nurturing me she fought me even more. So I grew up in a hostile environment.” He spent much of his childhood with his grandparents who were strong disciplinarians. Kouros awarded 1st Place in Long Jump In elementary school, he was awarded first place in the long jump. In high school he couldn’t stay home after school because of the family troubles, so he had to go somewhere and went to track. He began formal athletic training and started running races at the age of sixteen. At first his coach dismissed Kouros as being “a mediocre athlete who just didn’t have the build to go fast.” But he progressed to be one of the top high school runners in Greece. He was a junior champion at the 3, 000 and 5,000 meter distances. After high school he left home and lived on his own in Athens for a time. Kouros didn’t only have interests in running. At the age of 12 he began writing his own poetry and songs. In his high school years he took music and singing lessons. Eventually he published four albums and took part in music competitions. But his world greatness emerged in his running skills. In 1977 at that age of 21, Kouros ran his first marathon in 2:43:15. His times continued to improve to 2:25 in 1981. Soon he discovered that he excelled far more at ultra distances. In 1981 at the age of 25, Kouros started building a house for himself in Tripolis which would take years to complete. He worked during the days as a guard at the athletic stadium and in the evenings worked on his house alone and trained about twice per day. He averaged only 2.5 hours sleep per night. By the end of the year, he asked the Sports Council to send judges to witness his attempt to run 100k, running on a 20k road course, seeking to set a national record. He finished in 7:35 but no judges came. Spartathlon By 1983, at the age of 27, Kouros had finished 25 marathons, winning one (1981 Athens), He read about a new race from Athens to Sparta, called the Spartathlon. The race traced the historic footsteps of Pheidippides, an Athenian messenger in 490 BC. This race of about 156 miles (251 km) started at the Acropolis in Athens and ran through ancient towns including Corinth to Sparta. Earlier in October 1982 a team of British athletes from the Royal Air Force covered the course, with the first man finishing in 34.5 hours, proving it could be done. Kouros signed up, hoping to be the first Greek finisher. It was his first ultramarathon! He jumped right from the marathon distance to about 156 miles (251 km)! World record ultrarunner Eleanor Adams of England also signed up, the only woman in the race. When she took a bus ride to preview the course,
