We meet Es Devlin CBE to discuss her new multi-media work SURFACING commissioned by BMW and unveiled at Art Basel in Basel 2024.A pioneering combination of sustainable energy and movement in an installation of water, light, sound and dance. A dance collaboration and a series of mobile sound installations within a pilot fleet of BMW iX5 Hydrogen vehicles. In Hall 1.1 of the art fair Devlin created a booth displaying four works: Surfacing (2024), an illuminated cube of rain penetrated by a line of light and Surfacing II (2024), a pair of painted televisions in which a dancing figure appears to displace pixels and pigment, are flanked by Mask (2018) a projection-mapped model city fusing hands and river, and Mask in Motion (2018) a revolving illuminated translucent printed city which meshes viewers within its kinetic shadow. Each work continues Devlin's 30 year exploration of the entangled dance between humans and technology. The booth surprises visitors each hour as Surfacing's box of rain, like a magician's apparatus, conjures a 7 minute dance work by renowned Paris-based choreographer Sharon Eyal with music composed by London-based duo Polyphonia. A meeting of artist and engineers: Devlin has spent the past year engaging with engineers at BMW, learning the mechanics behind the hydrogen fuel cell technology and its implications for the future of sustainable energy systems. As an opening chapter to the works on view in Hall 1.1, she has created a simple soundscape drawn from their conversations and underscored by composers Polyphonia which is played to guests in the pilot fleet of BMW iX5 Hydrogen vehicles.Devlin says: “I learned from the BMW engineers the beautiful symmetry of the system at work within the hydrogen fuel cell: the energy that is used to separate hydrogen atoms from oxygen is recreated when the oxygen is reunited with hydrogen within the car. The by-product is not only the energy which propels the vehicle, but water.”The exterior of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen has been wrapped in a painted blue and white collage in which Devlin overlays paintings and text made in response to the prints and literature which populated her wall and bookshelves as a teenager. Painted gestures echoing the 1831 woodcut ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa' by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, are superimposed over hand written extracts from literature's longest sentence about water drawn from James Joyce's seminal novel ‘Ulysses'. Underlying the collage are excerpts from BMW Group publications on hydrogen fuel cell technology.Artist and Stage Designer, Es Devlin's work explores biodiversity, linguistic diversity and collective ai-generated poetry. She views the audience as a temporary society and encourages profound cognitive shifts by inviting public participation in communal choral works. Her canvas ranges from public sculptures and installations at Tate Modern, V&A, Serpentine, Imperial War Museum and United Nations General Assembly, to kinetic stage designs at the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Olympic ceremonies, Super-Bowl half-time shows, and monumental illuminated stage sculptures for Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Dr Dre, Kendrick Lamar and U2.Visit: https://EsDevlin.com/ and Follow @EsDevlin and @BMWGroupCulture Hosted on Acast. In this comprehensive exploration of one of the world's most prolonged and tragic conflicts, Pappe uses recently declassified archival material to analyse the motivations and strategies of the generals and politicians – and the decision-making process itself – that laid the foundation of the occupation. From a survey of the legal and bureaucratic infrastructures that were put in place to control the population of over one million Palestinians, to the security mechanisms that vigorously enforced that control, Pappe paints a picture of what is to all intents and purposes the world's largest ‘open prison'. https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-biggest-prison-on-earth/ilan-pappe/9781786073419 Strangers in the House - Raja Shehadeh Raja Shehadeh was born into a successful Palestinian family with a beautiful house overlooking the Mediterranean. When the state of Israel was formed in 1948 the family were driven out to the provincial town of Ramallah. There Shehadeh grew up in the shadow of his father, a leading civil rights lawyer. He vowed not to become involved in politics or law but inevitably did so and became an important activist himself. In 1985 his father was stabbed to death. The Israeli police failed to investigate the murder properly and Shehadeh, by then a lawyer, set about solving the crime that destroyed his family. In Strangers in the House, Shehadeh recounts his troubled and complex relationship with his father and his experience of exile - of being a stranger in his own land. It is a remarkable memoir that combines the personal and political to devastating effect. https://www.waterstones.com/book/strangers-in-the-house/raja-shehadeh/9781846682506

The pioneering set designer speaks to BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed about how she's set the stage for some of fashion's most talked-about immersive experiences. Background:In the world of set design, Es Devlin is a trailblazing, unstoppable force. Her remarkable career has seen her craft stages for global superstars like Beyoncé, U2 and Adele as well as immersive experiences for Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and most recently, Gucci which recently brought its Cosmos exhibition to London's 180 The Strand. But to describe Es as a set designer only feels somewhat reductive. She is a deep thinker who approaches her work like a creative philosopher, examining critical questions about the world. This week on The BoF Podcast, Devlin joins BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed to discuss her career and her impressions of fashion — as well as her advice for young creatives. Key Insights: Devlin approaches work through multiple lenses. “The practice is to see it through my own eyes, then see it through my collaborators eyes, then finally to see it through the audience's eyes,” she said. “Building on all of those converging and colliding… viewpoints… I think it's a very helpful muscle to learn just in living.”In creating bespoke environments, narrative is a central part of Devlin's process, particularly in working with fashion companies. “What I've learned… is how to tell a story about the history of a house through an experience that an audience will walk through,” she says. For creatives who may not have the budget of established fashion houses, Devlin encourages leaning on scarcity as a tool to harness creativity. “You can make a gesture by picking a place and turning all the lights out. You could make a gesture by just doing everything in one colour,” Devlin says. “Make your limitations… be the point, be the advantage.”As AI plays a bigger role in her own work Devlin is studying the technology to learn more, rather than work with it without context. “My approach generally is to learn to read as much as I can rather than speaking from a position of inaccuracy or ignorance.”Additional Resources:Gucci Cosmos Exhibition Arrives in LondonAt Saint Laurent, Far From Fashion Week Hosted on Acast. Transcript: Gaylene Gould: Right now, it feels like the old world is crumbling [echoes]. We're kind of teetering on the edge of a new one, but if we're gonna sidestep the problems that have played us so far, we are gonna need new tools, new ways to be together, to live new, and to connect [echoes]. Tai Shani: Any of the things that do have that idea in them of like what the world could be [are like] casting a stone into darkness, but that stone gets met at some point? Or, that's the hope, isn't it? Zing Tsjeng: What if we just thought a little bit bigger here, and we came up with an alternative view of the future and what it could be like. Gaylene Gould: What is a world and how do we begin to reshape it? What role can artists play in this? These are the questions we'll be exploring in REWORLDING, a new Serpentine Podcast series hosted by me, Gaylene Gould. Irenosen Okojie: You can create worlds that people don't recognise. You can create worlds that feel familiar, but suddenly you take somebody somewhere completely new and recalibrate a universe. [echoes] Gaylene Gould: The Serpentine program is all about exploring art and ideas for a changing world, and I've been working with the team to hunt for tools that will help us fashion a more expansive, compassionate and resilient world. Samson Kambalu: For me, remembering is almost like a creative exercise, you know, to try to get back to the present moment by the way of the past, Declan Rowe John: Art is like a way to portray your message to the world and kind of bring people together and show that they aren't alone. Gaylene Gould: Throughout this series, I'll be speaking to leading artists, designers, writers, and thinkers. We'll be hearing new sound art as well as diving back into Serpentine's vast archive to try and answer some of these questions. Performer from Tai Shani's work: I pray you can survive this and live forever Gaylene Gould: In REWORLDING, we'll be dreaming, listening, playing, remembering, and connecting in radical new ways. We'll be traveling together through gardens and game worlds, inner states and outer space, and I cannot wait to share the journey with you. Our first episode drops in January, 2023, so subscribe to Serpentine Podcast now and start your year by reworlding with us.

Es Devlin is the world's foremost set designer, having conceived stage sets for superstar musicians including Beyoncé, Stormzy, Kanye West, U2 and Adele. She has also created sets for opera houses around the world, and for productions at the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and many more. Es also works as an artist in her own right, designing sculptural installation pieces that address issues of social justice and sustainability. For This Cultural Life, Es Devlin remembers a scale model of her home town, Rye in Sussex, that fired her imagination and encouraged her interest in storytelling. She chooses the sleeve of Kate Bush's 1978 debut album The Kick Inside, which she tried to recreate as a collage in her teenage bedroom. She recalls a career breakthrough when, in 1998, she designed a National Theatre production of Harold Pinter's play Betrayal, a set which was inspired by Rachel Whiteread's artwork House, a concrete cast of the interior of a Victorian terraced house in London's East End, which was demolished in 1994. Her final choice of cultural inspiration is her work with the hip hop artist and producer Kanye West, with whom she collaborated on several spectacular stadium shows. Join two of 5x15's favourite guests, Carlo Rovelli and Oliver Burkeman, to discuss time, the universe and our place in it. Carlo Rovelli's HELOGLAND was an instant bestseller when it was published in 2021, and was chosen as a book of the year by The Times, Financial Times, Sunday Times, Guardian and Prospect. To celebrate its paperback publication, we are delighted to welcome Carlo back to 5x15 to revisit this beautiful, thrilling and mind-bending journey into the world of quantum physics. In HELGOLAND, Carlo Rovelli tells the story of the birth of quantum physics and its bright young founders, who were to become some of the most famous Nobel winners in science. It is a celebration of youthful rebellion and intellectual revolution; an invitation to a magical place, and a dazzling work from one of our most celebrated scientists and master storytellers, reminding us of the many pleasures of the life of the mind. Carlo will be joined in conversation by Guardian writer Oliver Burkeman, whose best-selling book FOUR THOUSAND WEEKS was a smash hit and a Financial Times, Guardian and Observer book of the year in 2021. Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists and spiritual teachers, it is a book that sets out to realign our relationship with time - and in doing so, to liberate us from its tyranny. Carlo Rovelli is a theoretical physicist who has made significant contributions to the physics of space and time. His books Seven Brief Lessons on Physics, Reality is Not What it Seems and The Order of Time are international bestsellers which have been translated into 43 languages and have sold over 2 million copies worldwide in all formats. His many fans include Benedict Cumberbatch, Antony Gormley, Neil Gaiman, Es Devlin, Lily Cole, David Hockney, Philip Pullman, Nick Hornby and Morgan Freeman. Rovelli is currently working in Canada and also directing the quantum gravity research group of the Centre de Physique Théorique in Marseille, France. Oliver Burkeman is the author of The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking, and for many years wrote a popular weekly column on psychology for the Guardian, 'This Column Will Change Your Life'. His work has also appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Psychologies and New Philosopher. He has a devoted following for his writing on productivity, mortality, the power of limits, and building a meaningful life in an age of bewilderment. With thanks for your support for 5x15 online. The team touches down at the London Design Biennale at Somerset House. We speak to this year's artistic director Es Devlin and the curators and designers behind the Ghanaian, French, Chilean and African Diaspora pavilions.
Es Devlin, who designed sets for Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch and Stormzy at the Britz, has created something more quietly contemplative as artistic director of the London Design Biennale, filling the courtyard of Somerset House in London with trees. She tells Elle Osili-Wood about how forests in literature are places of transformation and how she created her Forest for Change, with a clearing at its heart where we are invited to consider the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. The artist Phoebe Boswell’s new exhibition Here at New Art Exchange in Nottingham features many life-size, detailed, figurative drawings, as well as large-scale video and animations which reflect her exploration of marginalisation, freedom and the idea of home. She discusses her work and how it echoes her own experience as a Kenyan-born British artist. On May 18 the DCMS amended guidance issued on the 17th May prohibiting non professional singers from meeting indoors in groups larger than 6 which effectively prohibited most planned choral activities for the 2.2 million singers in over 40,000 choirs across the country. Front Row hears from Richard Reeves, General Manager of the Royal Choral Society who staged the Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall last Sunday and Paul Parker, lawyer and part-time tenor about the ongoing issues the new guidance has raised. Brian Eno and Es Devlin - the episode where I didn't ask a single question and yet somehow…they answered all of them. What absolute magic this was to witness and I can only hope I get to do it again soon as I discovered they are in fact, the ultimate dinner party guests. Brian and Es took it away and riffed on climate change, choral singing, taking creative mistakes seriously, the life of whales and lab meat. Of course all peppered with their showbiz stories involving Bowie, Bono and I threw one of my own in about Celine Dion for good measure. I hope you enjoy listening to these two as much as I did. John Wilson explores moments of creative inspiration as experienced by five leading artists - composer Hannah Peel, ballet dancer Tamara Rojo, playwright and director Kwame Kwei-Armah, designer Es Devlin, and songwriter David Bowie. We dive deep into the mystical, revelatory moments in which artists are set on a creative path at an early age, or inspired to continue to create throughout their lives. Detailed stories of emotional, physical and psychological responses to these moments of wonder are embedded in a rich soundscape of music and location recordings. Epiphanies is an audio love-letter to artistic creativity at a time when so much culture has been silenced and stilled. Produced by John Wilson A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4

Es Devlin is an artist and one of the world’s most influential stage designers - conceiving what she calls stage ‘sculptures’ with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Beyoncé, Adele, Kanye West, The Weeknd and U2, as well as designing the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics and the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. Her striking creations are equally well-known in the world of opera and theatre - from Bizet’s Carmen to Pinter’s Betrayal - all of which she does alongside her own solo work as an artist. From her studio in London, Es Devlin talks to Ella-mai Robey about her work and creative process.
Award-winning designer Es Devlin and her longtime collaborator Machiko Weston share their recent digital artwork, “I saw the world end”, marking the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
To mark the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki this week, the Imperial War Museum commissioned artist and stage designer Es Devlin and her Japanese collaborator Machiko Weston to make a short film in memory of those who died. They discuss their resulting artwork, I Saw the World End. New Perspectives, the Midlands company that takes theatre to rural areas and usually performs in village halls, has come up with a novel idea. For its latest production created during lockdown it has embraced old technology: 'Love from Cleethorpes' is a drama told on postcards. Every few days a new postcard arrives at the homes of the audience and, over a couple of weeks, the story unfolds. Tom Sutcliffe is joined by New Perspectives artistic director Jack McNamara. Literary critic Suzi Feay and arts journalist Kohinoor Sahota review Ali Smith's new novel Summer, the final instalment in her seasonal quartet of books, and discuss arts stories from the week including I'm a Celebrity moving from the Australian jungle to a British castle and Vogue theming their September issue on activism. The final guest for the Front Row Lockdown Discoveries, where artists and creators select something cultural that has given them pleasure or inspiration in the dark months of isolation, is Alys Tomlinson, Photographer of the Year at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards. Barbara Kingsolver talks about her new book, How to Fly (In Ten Thousand Easy Lessons) which is only her second collection of poetry. As well as offering practical advice (on knitting, getting divorced, doing nothing) the poems are about family, and making peace with life and death. Barbara also reflects on the redemptive power of art and poetry itself and celebrates the natural world whilst mourning its desecration. All this week on Front Row, creative individuals from the arts are choosing one Lockdown Discovery, a cultural find that has given them pleasure in the dark months of Covid-19. We start today with production designer Es Devlin, who tells us about her discovery - The Tempest by Creation Theatre. Sculptor Thomas J Price will unveil his statue Reaching Out this Wednesday. Depicting an anonymous everywoman absorbed in silent communication, the statue stands at 9 feet tall and will be one of only three public sculptures of Black women in the whole of the UK. Norman Lebrecht discusses the extraordinary career of the American concert pianist Leon Fleisher, who has just died at the age of 92. Fleisher lost the use of his right hand and performed left-handed for several decades, before regaining the ability to play with both hands later in life. What was the first show you ever saw? Your biggest theatre regret? And which production would you choose to watch on a loop for eternity? These questions and more make up Seven Stages, the new podcast from The Stage, sponsored by Audible. Our eight episode features designer Es Devlin and was released on Friday, July 10, 2020. From fringe theatres to worldwide stadium tours for the likes of Beyoncé and Adele, there are few worlds and scales untouched by designer Es Devlin. Starting as a designer for theatres like the Bush in west London, she quickly became a renowned stage designer, winning three Olivier Awards along the way. Recent stage work includes Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch, The Lehman Trilogy, Chimerica and The Nether. But in parallel to her stage career, she has become the go-to designer for the world's biggest musicians. Kanye West and U2, Lady Gaga and Take That, The Weeknd and Dua Lipa have all called on Devlin to conjure the engrossing, kinetic designs - mixtures of sculpture, language and light - that are her signature. Here she talks about early inspirations from her childhood on the south coast, through to all-night listening sessions with Kanye West. Every fortnight, you can join Tim Bano for illuminating, intimate conversations with influential performers and creatives who have lived their lives in theatre. The Seven Stages podcast, sponsored by Audible, is available anywhere you find your podcasts, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and the link below. Devlin's interview is available to listen to now and follows episodes with actor Paul Chahidi, playwright Alan Ayckbourn, actor Noma Dumezweni, choreographer Arlene Phillips, former Young Vic artistic director David Lan, Olivier award-winning lighting designer Paule Constable and Ian McKellen.

Art critic Alastair Sooke, in the company of some of the leading creatives of our age, continues his deep dive into the stunning works in the Museum of Modern Art's collection, whilst exploring what it really means “to see” art. Today's edition features British stage designer and sculptor Es Devlin. Devlin has made large scale touring stage sculptures in collaboration with Beyoncé, Kanye West Adele, U2, and the Royal Opera House in London, as well as designing the London Olympic Closing Ceremony in 2012. She has selected Felix Gonzalez-Torres' Perfect Lovers - in which two synchronized clocks, like those typically found in offices and public spaces, are displayed side by side. One will inevitably stop before the other. Created whilst Felix Gonzalez-Torres's partner was ill, it embodies the tension that comes from two people living side-by-side as life moves forward towards death. The Swedish Academy today announced the winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Winners, not winner, because, embroiled in a scandal over allegations of sexual assault by the husband of one of its members, the Academy delayed last year’s prize until today. The 2019 winner is Austrian writer Peter Handke, a controversial figure, one of whose early plays was called Offending the Audience, and 2018's winner Olga Tokarczuk is a leading Polish novelist who won the Man Booker International Prize last year for her book Flights. Front Row has the only UK interview with Olga Tokarczuk today and the critic Arifa Akbar considers the work of the winners and the implications of these awards.
