We start each guest encounter with a few minutes of meeting each other without words, through the language of our bodies, before we press record and bring it to a conversation. This is not a hard hitting agenda or getting to the bottom of things. It's about finding each other in the not-knowing. We're here for the spaciousness, the awkwardness, the silliness, the silence — from the dark insides of our bodies to the bright insights of our minds, we're excited to welcome people who's impulses we'd like to get to know. The four trauma responses are the brain's way of protecting us from threat, real or perceived. The amount of time and patience it takes to heal the body cannot be understated. Pushing our own personal boundaries to create a larger capacity to be witnessed and seen, can feel counterintuitive at times. However, if we can dig deep to understand how the nervous system attempts to protect us, even when it doesn't feel like it, we can come to a place of deep compassion for ourselves and others to allow our bodies to feel safe again.   In today's episode, our hosts Elisabeth and Jennifer sit down with somatic practitioner, podcast host, and founder of Holistic Life Navigation, Luis Mojica, to discuss what it means to heal the body to live authentically rather than in a trauma response. In this conversation, our hosts and Luis unravel the complexities of somatic healing and how inflammation shows up in the body as a protective response. They also discuss how shame is actually stress and how that relates to our health, even in the most “optimal” health conditions, and how boundaries are the key to creating more connection with the self and others, and much more.    Healing is not linear, sometimes it feels as if things are getting worse before they get better, however when we are trying to create safety in the body after years of dissociation, or being in our F responses, it takes consistent effort along with a healthy dose of faith and hope that things can and will become easier the more we believe that healing is possible.   Join us to explore these topics and much more!    Topics discussed in this episode: Understanding your capacity in somatic healing Why embodiment does not mean peace Emotional neglect associated with childhood body boundary violation How trauma states cause inflammation in the body Inflammation is the body protecting itself The connection between somatics and nutrition Inflammatory response from prolonged stress from shame The deep healing that comes from being witnessed and witnessing others Fawning vs. Boundaries Supporting constriction in somatic healing Patience that is required in healing the body Connect with Luis Mojica by visiting the Holistic Life Navigation website here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/   Get started training your nervous system with our FREE 2-week offer on the Brain Based Membership site: https://www.rewiretrial.com   Connect with us on social media: @trauma.rewired   Join the Trauma Rewired Facebook Group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/761101225132846   FREE 1 Year Supply of Vitamin D + 5 Travel Packs from Athletic Greens when you use my exclusive offer: https://www.drinkag1.com/rewired   This episode was produced by Podcast Boutique https://www.podcastboutique.com Trauma Rewired podcast  is intended to educate and inform but does not constitute medical, psychological or other professional advice or services. What is Somatic Work and How Binge Eating is a Form of Body Communication with Luis Mojica

Happy Satiated Saturday! My first memories of leaning on food to not feel takes me back to middle school. There were things going on at home that were way too much for such a young little girl to navigate and process. I was bullied at sleepaway camp and Hebrew School. I look back now and it makes total sense how my body guided me toward binge eating.Binging was never the problem. It became the answer when my body didn't know how to navigate the sadness, depression, and anger it was holding onto for me. This means that the healing journey was also never about getting comfortable and befriending the foods that had been labeled as bad or wrong to eat. This was about supporting my body in feeling safe to be here. What I've seen in my food healing path and those that I've worked with is that the safer your body feels to be here, the less your body will perceive food as a potential threat. It's not about making the food alright to eat first, it's about supporting your body in feeling safe so that food can be interpreted differently. My binging disappeared as a coping strategy when my body didn't feel like it needed that anymore. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I talk with Luis Mojica, who is a Somatic Therapist, Nutritionist, and founder of Holistic Life Navigation about the somatic wisdom in binge eating behaviors, how you're drawn to specific foods for a nervous system reason, what somatic work is, and why it has grown in popularity over the past few years. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/somatic-work-and-binge-eatingIf you're curious about exploring a somatic approach to your trauma based food behaviors, go to stephaniemara.com/learn where you can check out my two self paced courses. S2 EP8: with Camille Leak: Exploring the Intersection of DEI and Trauma

Inclusive Life with Nicole Lee

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2022 44:22

“Become a witness to yourself.” - Camille Leak   In Inclusive Life, we are continually looking at the ways in which we can reach across differences as a path to connection and liberation. We often explore the impediments to being with one another authentically such as defensiveness, perfectionism, guilt, and shame. Camille Leak brings this conversation even deeper. She brings us to what's beneath these obstacles to connection: trauma. Camille Leak is a DEI practitioner who believes that folks' inability to be with other people's differences is their fundamental lack of capacity to be with their own marginalization and trauma first. And what feels really new here is the way in which Camille deliberately and continually connects marginalization with trauma and trauma with marginalization. Because we've been taught--some more than others-- to “bypass and ignore our own marginalization and trauma for the comfort of other people,” Camille asserts that we will bypass and ignore others' trauma and marginalization. We cannot do for others what we cannot do for ourselves.  Awareness comes first. It helps to know what trauma responses are. We may have heard about the trauma responses fight, flight, freeze or fawn (appease), but can we recognize those responses as they show up in our bodies and in our behavior patterns? For example, flight can show up as chronic busyness. Fawning can show up in a tendency to inauthentically compliment or agree to stay connected and liked.  And this is where becoming a neutral witness to ourselves enters in. Can we witness ourselves in pain with curiosity and kindness rather than judgment and a desire to fix? According to Camille, this is often where DEI efforts shut down: we want to keep it comfortable. We especially do not want to deal with our own pain. Let's just do a bias training and keep it movin'. As Nicole points out, growing up requires increasing our capacity for discomfort. As kids, we experience bumps and bruises as we learn a new physical skill. We learn to wait our turn, to confront challenges without falling apart, and to win and lose gracefully.  And so the work of liberation requires us to exercise these same discomfort muscles as the stakes get higher and higher. We have to get in our reps, practicing staying with ourselves in discomfort. As we do that, we become better equipped to be neutral observers of others. Camille offers that we can begin to discern whether we are dealing with another person, or actually dealing with someone's trauma response. In the face of differences, there is the reality that one's marginalization has happened because of another's privilege. Can we develop the capacity to be with someone's marginalization that we are, on some level, perpetuating and benefiting from?  It's deep and necessary work that requires and generates empathy. And empathy is connection across difference. This conversation will make you pause and will invite you to look through the lens of trauma when approaching yourself, others, and all equity and inclusion work.  We encourage you to seek out the support and facilitation Camille is offering. It so beautifully complements the work of Inclusive Life.    In this conversation, Nicole and Camille discuss: How Camille's work in market research led her to her current work in DEI and somatics The problem: our inability to sit with other people's trauma What trauma actually is  Why organizations and their leaders want so desperately to avoid the discomfort The fallout that ensues when leaders won't get in touch with their own trauma What trauma is not The cost of not dealing with trauma and how it relates to white supremacy culture Trauma response as a visceral mechanism to ensure safety and position There's not necessarily more trauma, there's more willingness and ability to verbalize traumatizing experiences and systems How can we acknowledge varying degrees and layers of trauma in ourselves and others without playing “oppression Olympics”? The importance of relationship and how to begin to cultivate relationships across differences What it means for Camille to live her best Inclusive Life   About Camille Leak: Camille Leak (she/her) is a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Practitioner, truth teller, and story teller. She often says, “I'm not doing my job if I don't do two things: 1) tell you how DEI impacts your bottom line, e.g., how it makes you money, drives growth, or increases relevancy and 2) make you really uncomfortable; being uncomfortable is the only way you know you are doing DEI right.” Via her practice, Real Talk & Brave Spaces, she provides group facilitation, workshops, and one-on-one coaching about a variety of DEI topics, cultivating spaces where individuals and groups can fearlessly confront the most uncomfortable elements of DEI. Additionally, Camille is the Community Manager of Holistic Life Navigation, a company and community that serves to support people as they release stress and trauma by listening to their bodies. She got into trauma healing, facilitation and community management because she loves asking people questions that help them reach that “a-ha!” moment. Camille was the DEI Learning & Development Program Manager for Amazon Web Services in which she supported the strategic direction of DEI by leading key initiatives across the enterprise, including Sponsorship/Mentoring Programs, Communication Strategies, and Learning & Development initiatives. Prior to joining Amazon Web Services, Camille was also the ID&E Manager at Altria, leading key initiatives across the enterprise, including Data Analyses, Communications, Employee Resource Groups, Self-ID Campaigns and Learning & Development programming. At Altria, Camille held previous roles in the Consumer & Marketplace Insights and Corporate Affairs functions. Prior to joining Altria, Camille was the Associate Head of Multicultural Insights at Kantar Futures, where she led the development and implementation of the annual Multicultural MONITOR and consulted with clients, offering actionable insights for engaging specific under-represented or marginalized consumers and an evolving general market that is increasingly diverse and requiring more of the companies and brand they choose to support. Camille earned her B.S. in Business Administration along with a minor in Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later earned her MBA at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School with a concentration in Marketing and Strategy.   Find Camille Leak: Course Link: Real Talk & Brave Spaces: Getting Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable Website: Holistic Life Navigation LinkedIn: @camilleleak

Difficult mother-daughter relationships are her jam. Her coaching practice is trauma-informed and based on intersectional feminist principles. She recognizes that what's possible personally is what's possible collectively and that the Mother Wound is not actually about mothers but about systems and structures that oppress all women. She understands that adage "hurt people hurt people" but prefers to say "people who are unaware of their hurt sometimes hurt other people" while acknowledging that cultivating compassion and empathy doesn't mean you have to hang out with hurt people and that healthy boundaries (up to an including going "no contact" even if just temporarily) are at the heart of healthy relationships. I often talk about me and my partner and our regular day to day lives, because I know a lot of you are curious about what my life is like behind the episodes. The other day when we both went to this beautiful place in Delhi, Sunder Nursery, admiring the fabulousness of lush green trees in the middle of the summer. We halted at FabCafe and what followed was An Interesting Point of View! So many things that we enjoy and can learn from, come free in life, like:The best coaching is for free — Like for Trauma work, I listen to Holistic Life Navigation, for doing deep work I listen to Cal Newport or Youtube Channel - Ryan Daniel Moran. Kurzgesagt and Access Consciousness I don't see any of them being scared that if: I keep giving, I will run out of content. People will steal my content and start selling. In my paid programs no one will show up because I am already giving so much in my free resources. But then, a lot of people ask me about how I do business? And how do I create sales? They often want to know how I go about interacting with people. What do I tell them? How do I introduce my offer? And what exactly is the hook that I use to hook my audience? How do I convert? And all that... And my one single answer is: I give. I give everything away before time. I believe in creating a transformation 'way' before my clients have paid. Because I look at all the benefits of working with them when they come from that space. They are informed. They feel safe. They already know how it feels to work with me. They are able to trust the process and are able to measure their own commitment. I don't have to build things from scratch, work on their issues, thought errors or dysfunctional habits. Some of the work has already been done. Like people tell me that before they bought my program ATEPS, they had binged everything I produced. Why does that happen? This happens because of their prior experience with me. They know what they have received and are here to experience that energy and safety. The moment selling comes into the picture people always start feeling unsafe. This is because of the collective experience of selling - Which is desperate, anxious energy of lack. So the antidote is generosity. If you make generosity the driving force behind your marketing, people will keep showing up again and again and that will allow them to form a bond with your offer at a way deeper level. It may take time for such conversions, like it takes time for a baby to fully form in the mother's womb, but the bond begins with one cell embedded into the uterine cavity. And that is how post by post, solution by solution, content by content, with every single drop of it, the bond will grow and in the Long run your coaching business will have a solid foundation and a unique selling strategy: GENEROSITY To receive regular updates and free coaching calls on transforming your money and business reality join my Free Facebook Community You are Money If you enjoyed this episode, and want to tell me about how it shifted your money reality, come and join me on Instagram at @drgauravdeka Enjoy the Show? Her approach to navigating difference really stood out to me during the course and I wanted to learn more about her journey and subsequently choose to invite her to join the team! In this episode, she shares a bit of her healing journey and how she maintains the capacity to explore things like bias, prejudice and discrimination on a regular basis. In particular, how leaning into curiosity helps us to work and communicate across difference. Camille's work focuses on honest discovery -- not saying the "right" thing or trying to change someone's mind. For more info on Camille's work visit: https://www.realtalkbravespaces.com/; LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/camilleleakFor more info on Luis' work visit: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/

The first part of this episode is a deep dive in my (Britten's) world. I share my process of acknowledging and honoring that I am truly building the business of my dreams and what I'm learning about being a wild teacher and wild business woman. It's classic Moon to Moon. I speak from my cave space. To go straight to my conversation with my wonderful guest Natasha Levinger, skip to about 47 minutes in. Many listeners of M2M are no strangers to the Natasha's work. Natasha is my go-to teacher and healer for healing my inner child. She's also my dear friend and the one I call when I want to talk about being biz witches. We thought it would be fun and helpful to frame a conversation on inner child healing with the Aries archetype. Topics include: tantrums, triggers, reactivity, competition, judgment, and charge in the body. Several times we honor the work of somatic healer Luis Mojica of Holistic Life Navigation. The last in a series of episodes on the elements, this latest Moon to Moon episode holds teachings and conversation about working with the element of Earth in your life and in your magical offering to the world. My honored guest for this effort is Virgo Sun Luis Mojica of Holistic Life Navigation. For reasons that will be apparent when listening here, I knew that Luis would be my first choice for a contemplation on Earth as soon as I dreamed of having one. Luis's direct bio: "My name is Luis Mojica. I teach people how to release stress & trauma through listening to their bodies. I am a trained somatic therapist, whole food nutritional counselor, & herbalist. My work is a result of my own journey to heal complex PTSD & illness. We can connect to our bodies through listening, to the Earth through eating and feeling, and to ourselves through mindful awareness. From this place, we can heal anything." On so many levels, Luis is talking and teaching about the element of Earth: food / nutrition / eating, body listening / knowing / awareness, herbal medicine, somatic therapy, forest bathing, grounding practices, and connecting with the planet in relationship. As I share in the intro, working with Earth for me has been an important piece of my own healing process because I was once acutely disassociated from my body. My body was always a problem. Being here in this lifetime, being fully present with awareness and connection, deep listening to my body's needs: all of that used to be very scary for me, so I found safety in escaping. Because Luis's work and my own story involve healing trauma, please be advised and give thought to whether or not you have the capacity to receive this episode today. In my view, Luis has become something of a living Chiron, which we discuss in our conversation. To learn more about Chiron, I recommend starting with this Liz Greene article titled “Wounding & the Will to Live.” I also recommend my mentor Adam Sommer's episode on Chiron in Aries (the sign Chiron is currently in as well as my own writing on Chiron from the Living the Signs: Virgo book, a snippet of which you can find here. We don't need astrology to tell us that the coming four weeks will carry a LOT. We all feel it coming. If astrology offers us a reflection and contextualization of our lived experience, if this old ancient language can help us understand and move through this specific moment in time, then let us experiment with the possibility that studying the astrology of the moment can be nourishing, empowering, and resonant. Will you join me? This is by necessity brief. I could have covered so much more here. But I have done that elsewhere. For an in-depth look at Scorpio, please check out my 160-page workbook Living the Signs: Scorpio or my oral teachings on the sign in The Medicine of Autumn audio series. See also my previous episode with Lara Veleda Vesta, which is very Scorpionic in nature (even though astrology is never mentioned!). In the episode, I mention the excellent work of Danica Boyce and Luis Mojica. Please check out Danica's podcast Fair Folk and Luis's podcast Holistic Life Navigation to learn more about their teachings. Please reach out if you have any questions. Sending warm wishes.
