Onze tweede gast is Willem Smit. Ready? What happens when you make a punk-show inspired by children's television? Why should more alternative artists approach their show like a pop star? And how to approach a concept many people will not understand? This is a special episode of The Live Coaches, recorded in front of a live audience in De Basis in Nijmegen. Our guest is formerly Nijmegen based art-punk artist Tom Harden aka ‘Bumble B. Boy.'Bumble B. Boy is an art-punk artist, originally from Australia and now based in the Netherlands. He has been called the most bizarre festival sensation of The Netherlands and is a singular figure in the Dutch music scene. With a unique blend of theatrics, storytelling and electric punk energy he has been growing his cult following and garnering acclaim as well as some pretty harsh reviews.Performing in a beekeeper suit and with his band members dressed up as insects, he blends genres and conventions and stretches the boundaries of what a live punk show can be like.In our conversation we discuss his unique vision and the live experience that results, how he's making his remarkable and sometimes bizarre vision a reality, how he goes about finding an audience willing to immerse themselves in it and how he got to playing successful shows on leading festivals like Best Kept Secret, Down The Rabbit Hole en Into The Great Wide Open.Follow @TheLiveCoaches on Instagram for inspiration, fragments and updates on new episodes and check out www.thelivecoaches.nl/podcast/bumble-b-boy for links to everything we discuss and more info about our coaching and workshops!Ready? Verder in deze aflevering: de ambitieuze duurzaamheidsplannen van Into The Great Wide Open.
Zij is muziekprogrammeur voor het festival Into The Great Wide Open op Vlieland.
In March and April of 1992, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were wrapping up the European final leg of their Into The Great Wide Open tour. This leg saw them play dates in Germany, the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Norway, and on April 3rd, they closed out the tour in Malmo, Sweden, playing an extended set of 28 songs to 6000 Swedish fans, closing out with Learning to Fly, Making Some Noise, and then serene lullaby, Alright For Now. Tom couldn't have anticipated that on his return to Los Angeles, everything was very soon going to be very far from alright.Today's episode covers the non-album single released in April 1992 "Peace in L.A.".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/OT2rb7ac3_4To hear the "Peace Mix" of the track, you can check out this video: https://youtu.be/fO2ogekTvuAI referenced the National Geographic documentary, LA 92, in the episode and you can find that here: https://youtu.be/uaotkHlHJwoThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. I have two words for you: Yogi Berra. But what does the Yankees catcher have to do with my conversation with Pete Nester? Tune in to find out!Today's episode is a sprawling, hugely enjoyable conversation I had with a fellow music podcaster who I've been listening to for a couple and a half years now. Pete was very supportive of this show right from the getgo and offered me some valuable advice when I was starting up around issues of music usage/rights etc. He's also just a damn fine human being and a great music critic. We talked about a whole host of topics, from the impact of grunge to whether podcasting changes the way you listen to music, to seeing Tom on the Into The Great Wide Open tour. This week it's a long one but I'm positive that you'll enjoy listening to it as much as I had being on one side of this wonderful conversation. The lyrics in Built to Last are unambiguously hopeful and quietly resilience. Perhaps it's Tom's last attempt to build a creative buttress around his failing marriage. Perhaps its an equal attempt to put up a wall around a band that had gone through a major friction point and were probably still unsure what direction they would be taking. The lyric feels, in some ways, like a more introspective complement to I Won't Back Down. The sentiment is the same really, but the perspective and the forcefulness of the emotion is focused inward in this song rather than outward on I Won't Back Down. That song tells the whole world that they'll have to fight to beat Tom Petty, this one reassures loved ones of the same. I Won't Back Down is a warning, We Were Built to Last is a commitment. I know that, because you're listening to this podcast that you must love rock n roll music. And when you hear the crackle of a cable being plugged into an amp, or that low buzz from the speaker, there's just something primal and irresistible that happens to you if you love this type of music. Your whole body responds to it in both a physical and emotional way. It's not “just” music. It becomes like oxygen for your soul. Makin' Some Noise just captures that rapturous feeling of delight that we all feel when a groove hits us and the amps blaze that sweet sweet rock n roll onto our synapses via our ear canals.Today's episode covers the penultimate song on side two of "Into The Great Wide Open", "Makin' Some Noise".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/YsbZTStV2kQ You can watch the live version from the Take the Highway release here: https://youtu.be/oDyDKtRl8S0The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Another simple song, another catchy hook, another memorable idea that Tom puts into our heads and leaves there as a treat. I'm 100% sold on Into The Great Wide Open these days, where I didn't listen to it front to back very often before. This song is another little forgotten deep cut that does so much with so little, very economically. The core idea is a fairly profound one but it's wrapped up in a breezy, light little piece of music. Just marvellous. There's a ton to love about this song, both lyrically and musically. We get red-winged hawk, we have Mike and Benmont sharing a solo, we have some beautiful harmonies and all sorts of interesting jamming in the outro.Today's episode covers the fourth song on side two of "Into The Great Wide Open", "You and I Will Meet Again".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/8MVZ1en8evEYou can hear a 2018 remaster, included on the American Treasure boxset here: https://youtu.be/hsisif_mBaYThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. No Man's Land in TivoliVredenburg in december 2023. Ready? In Conversations With Tom Petty, Tom says “I struggled with the lyrics quite a bit. It was one of those things where you struggle and you always wonder if you got everything out of it that you could.” He does go on to say that during a rehearsal for the song he found that he enjoyed the lyrics, but I think the way they're crafted belies any notion of uncertainty on his part. I love that alternating point of view in the two halves of each verse and then the two halves of this relationship, in someone's arms and then their hands.Today's episode covers the third song on side two of "Into The Great Wide Open", "Out in the Cold'".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/19Z06genVX8If you want to hear the live version from the Take the Highway release, you can find that one here: https://youtu.be/JwOluzWdoYQThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Maybe she's the girl who is gonna be picked up in King's Highway. Maybe the thing she's finally managed to break free from is a relationship with a self-obsessed movie star who has been pulled into a world of glamour and glitz. Maybe, just maybe, I'm massively overthinking this, but it sure is fun to connect dots and build out the narrative in your own mind!Today's episode covers the second song on side two of "Into The Great Wide Open", "Too Good To Be True'".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/ek2_lOix9zI If you want to hear a live version from Take the Highway, you can find that here: https://youtu.be/h8dMrn8FW80 And if you want to check out the edit I made of the track, you can listen to that here: https://youtu.be/AHTxhEBXFZQ The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. There are, again, some very big ideas packed into this very simple almost-four-minute pop song and as always, Tom isn't preaching or judging, just observing. As my wonderful guest Matt Jaffe said during our Ten Questions episode, Tom is never didactic. He's not saying that celebrity is bad, he's not judging the family's luck or the girl's choices, and importantly he's not prescribing an antidote, he's just making the observation and letting it stand alone. It's up to us to decide what we think about the ideas he's presenting and at the end of the day, despite the downbeat nature of the lyrics, we can all enjoy singing along with that utterly glorious chorus line.Today's episode covers the opening song on side two of "Into The Great Wide Open", "All The Wrong Reasons'".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/_x7osTT2b7gCheck out Honest and Unmerciful Record Review Podcast: http://tinyurl.com/jnbwxvmtAnd if you want to hear Annie Lennox joining Tom and Bob Dylan on stage, you can hear that here: https://youtu.be/zatisDlB2isThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. “You could almost take Mike [Campbell] for granted, because anything you asked him to do, he did it. And more. I don't remember ever throwing anything his way that he couldn't do. He could do it, and do it better than you thought. He will give you back your idea better than you had it in the first place. THAT'S a great musician.” - Tom PettyThe implication I've always taken from the abrupt ending is that in this conversation about all or nothing, this final act of musical vandalism is the protagonist choosing nothing, instead of all. It's a perfect way to end this song and what an incredible way to end side one of the record!Today's episode covers the last song on side one of "Into The Great Wide Open". In 2004/2005 when Paul Zollo is interviewing Tom for his seminal book, Conversations With Tom Petty. Tom bemoans to Paul that The Dark of the Sun was never played live. He says “It got lost in the shuffle of that album. There were so many songs on it. I thought it was a good little song.”This is another one of those tracks that I sometimes forget about and then when I hear it think, “man, that's a great song!” and then when I hear Mike's solo, I think “Man, that's a REALLY good song!” It's slick, it's short, and it's an upbeat ray of sunshine.Today's episode covers "The Dark of the Sun", the penultimate track on side one of "Into The Great Wide Open".You can listen to the song here: https://youtu.be/tr_LGFe7XeUThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In Conversations With Tom Petty, when Tom tells author Paul Zollo that the band were allowed to pick some of their favourites for the Anthology, Paul asks “So Two Gunslingers is one of your favourites?” Tom Responds “Oh definitely. I love that song. I was really proud of that when it got done.” When Paul comments “It's a funny song, but meaningful.” Tom responds, “Yeh, it's a really good anti-war song”.Today's episode covers "Two Gunslingers", the fourth track on "Into The Great Wide Open". Where Tom's vocal on a song like Refugee or Rebels is like a sharpened steel, his voice here sits more in that butterscotch place that he could employ when he wanted to dial the energy back. Even in the chorus, he doesn't lean into any vibrato, doesn't crack or pinch his voice and just lets the melody wash over you. And it's a song that doesn't need vocal pyrotechnics because all the explosions in this song come from that wonderful turnaround, the tonal shift in the chorus, and one of the best narrative lyrics Tom, or anyone, ever wrote. Whereas songs like "Something Big" or "Dogs on the Run" have a loose narrative that leave plenty to the listener's imagination, this one is a much more fully realized and theatrical lyric. It's Tom following the flow and seeing where the story takes him.Today's episode covers the title track from "Into The Great Wide Open". There is one piece of profanity in the episode when Tom is telling a story. Like Learning To Fly, it's a song that the band would change the arrangement of and when Paul Zollo mentions the acoustic version on the Playback boxset, Tom responds that “It'll work just about any way you want to play it.” He also goes on to say “It was a tricky one to record. We went through a few changes trying to get the track to sound the way we wanted.”I think that “the Kings Highway” here isn't at all a reference to the road that runs through Brooklyn, New York. If I had to guess, that was just one of Tom's little flashes of genius. I'd bet that he had “and we'll ride down the …something… highway” and toyed with different words to slot in there. A lesser writer could have gone with "wide highway", or "long highway", or "cold highway" or some type of adjective, but using “King's highway” reinforces that idea of better, or more, or grander. It's a great little bit of writing.Today's episode covers the second track from "Into The Great Wide Open", Kings Highway. You can listen to the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h3gXKArWyw Here's a great live, full band arrangement from the Into The Great Wide Open tour: https://youtu.be/OdqDeBzqlP0If you want to hear the acoustic version that Tom and Paul Zollo were talking about in Conversations With Tom Petty, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/wM-sHhnvZeMAnd to see a fantastic behind the scenes rehearsal from the Dogs With Wings tour, check this out (Howie's harmonies are stunning): https://youtu.be/AnMT-46q3moThe Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. When Paul asks Tom to confirm that the origin of the song is him hearing a pilot say that learning to fly is easy, but coming down's the hard part, Tom replies “True. That was the inspiration and I took it from there. Jeff and I wrote that together.” He also comments that it was written pretty quickly, saying “I think we wrote it in an evening. It came quickly because I had written most of the words and I had gotten a tune in my head. We sat down and spent a whole evening on it. But that's fairly quick, if it comes in a day or two.”Sometimes, the best way to write a great song is to not overthink it. I'd argue this is the greatest gift that Jeff Lynne gave to Tom Petty, because it changed everything from this point forward, directy or indirectly. Tom tells author Paul Zollo “That's been one of our most popular songs. We still get a lot of requests for that in movies, and people always want to hear it in the show. People embrace it.”Today's episode covers the lead track from "Into The Great Wide Open", Learning to Fly.You can listen to the song here:https://youtu.be/s5BJXwNeKsQ If you want to the live version from Gainseville in 2006, check it out here: https://youtu.be/4p_f7Df2-oM Here's the live version from 1994 at the Shoreline Amphitheatrein Mountainview, CA that I talked about with Benmont's amazing piano part: https://youtu.be/KxTnlCEsUWY And if you want to check out the final performance of Running down a dream, you can find it here:https://youtu.be/SnOOYrPkVYk The Tom Petty Project is a proud member of The Deep Dive Podcast Network, which you can find on Twitter: https://twitter.com/deepdivepodnetDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Presentatie: Gijs Groenteman

We hear an incredible Mike Millard master recording of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in Costa Mesa on Nov 9, 1991 supporting Into The Great Wide Open. I play Free Fallin', Psychotic Reaction & Don't Come Around Here no more. Great show from a great band.
Tom Petty told the story of Eddie who moved to Hollywood with aspirations of being a star in the song "Into The Great Wide Open" from 1991. This story has very similar energy to the Ace of Pentacles and we break down the lyrics to study the comparison

In een nieuwe aflevering van Makkinga Moves blikken we vooruit op Into The Great Wide Open.
We are BACK! After an unplanned 6 week hiatus, due in equal parts to back country isolation, low level depression, and just not feeling like I had much to say, I return this week to ramble about life, love and the pursuit of scrambled adventures and a clear mind. I took break from clearing out this house to chew the proverbial fat about what's gone down here and what might be next. In the words of the late great Tom Petty - tomorrow I depart, once again, Into The Great Wide Open, with only the slightest idea of what's next. On the road again, indeed. "We leave you in your room It isn’t late, but you want to sleep It’s cold outside. A frozen, starlit night Your voice is frail, and sounds like light snow that flutters down to the ground Mom brought you a small Christmas tree, but it’s not the same when you’re alone, in front of a tv I dream of you back in the old days Christmas dinner, together around the big table in the kitchen" Dat Robin Kester van vele markten thuis is, wisten we.

Afgelopen weekend was ook Into The Great Wide Open, het charmante festival op Vlieland.
POP 5: "Another pointless demarcation of exaggerated merit." Do you know that Hot Wheels, Ultron and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood are turning 50? Covering the late great Tom Petty’s hit Into The Great Wide Open. Enjoy ev1
Our previous “In The 90s” episodes examined the careers of Van Halen and Metallica in that decade and discussed if they had managed to survive the turbulence that was the rise of alternative and independent rock music. For our latest edition, we’re joined by author/songwriter Paul Zollo to revisit the career of Tom Petty, who released the book Conversations With Tom Petty in 2006. Starting with the Jeff Lynne produced Heartbreakers backed album Into The Great Wide Open, we dig into the changes in Petty’s songwriting, the band personnel changes, his second solo album Wildflowers with producer Rick Rubin onto the decade closing album Echo. Of course, there is much more to the story, so be sure to tune and then leave us your thoughts on Tom Petty in the 90s. Songs in this Episode: Intro - Medley (Into the Great Wide Open, Learning to Fly, Mary Jane’s Last Dance, You Don’t Know How It Feels) 47:07 - Walls (Circus) from She’s The One Outro - Honey Bee from Wildflowers Follow on Twitter / Facebook Request a 2017 Review / Subscribe at Patreon http://www.digmeoutpodcast.com
