From the outside looking in, he was living the dream. Private jets, exclusive parties, money, models and celebrities. But on the inside, Scott Harrison was rotting away. After a decade of heavy drugs, booze and blackouts he came to a realization: his life was morally and spiritually bankrupt. Hungry for drastic change, he packed up and shipped out to volunteer aboard a military hospital vessel off the coast of Liberia in West Africa. For the first time, Scott witnessed devastating poverty and widespread illness, children drinking dirty, diseased water. And he had an epiphany. If he could just figure out how to get clean water to the masses, he could be a doctor to millions. In 2006, Scott went back to New York where he created the model for what would become a revolutionary non-profit endeavor, Charity: Water, which to date has raised $500 million and helped over 12 million people. 3 Pillars of Self-Trust w/ Shohreh Davoodi

Harder to Kill Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2021 40:18

Listening to your body doesn't happen through a magic pill or a one-size-fits-all answer. It is about leaning into your self-trust and learning to embrace what makes you uniquely you. But how do we actually do that in a practical, hands-on way? The concept of self-trust is an all-encompassing one that considers a lot of different parts about who you are as a person, which is why it is essential to have the proper framework when diving into these topics. Key Takeaways If You Are Looking To Build Self-Trust You Should: Work on building up your consciousness, care, and compassion habits Acknowledge your privileges and how you can use them to help others in your community Lean into courage by questioning the things in your life that you may do out of habit Learn How To Build Self-Trust with Shohreh Davoodi Shohreh Davoodi is a self-trust coach who created her Three Pillars of Self-Trust Framework to help women overcome fear and self-doubt and become brave by conjuring up the courage inside of them. Her framework combines the three main pillars of self-trust, consciousness practices, care practices, and courage practices so that you can figure out who you are and what you value. The Three Pillars of Self-Trust The first step of self-trust is consciousness. This means having the awareness of the things in your life that you want to change, what is working for you in your life and what isn’t, and why. This usually deals with the systems in place in our society that are causing self-doubt, that really has nothing to do with you as an individual.  Next comes care practices. While we all know the importance of self-care, Shohreh takes it a step further and includes principles such as intuitive eating, intentional movement, sleep, and organization all as ways that you can care for yourself and let your body know that it can trust you to listen and take care of it.  The final piece of the puzzle is courage. Engaging with issues such as activism, setting boundaries, and having a more value-driven life are all ways that you can reconnect with your head, heart, and body, to do the things that make you feel good. It Takes a Village That Stands Together To See Real Change In order to engage more authentically with your own self-trust, you need to dive deep and look some scary stuff in the eye. We cannot self-trust our way into community liberation. It takes better community care and systemic changes so that everybody can have self-trust and a better relationship to food and their bodies.  There is no one right way to engage with these practices. By being more understanding and compassionate to the people around you, being in a community that lets you know that you are not alone, and dropping into your body in a time-sensitive way that feels good for you are the best ways to take steps to move closer to deeper self-trust. What is one way that you are going to lean into your courage and let your body know that it can trust you? Share which of Shohreh’s tips you're going to integrate into your routine with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode How the mentality of siloing everything you do is getting in the way of your ability to access body trust (9:12) Explore the three pillars of self-trust and the different parts of who you are that you need to consider (13:43) The role of marginalization and consciousness that play into the wellness space (19:32) Recommendations for advocating for the internal and external need for change on a systemic level (24:42) How to establish trust within your body through introspective awareness (27:55) Quotes “My niche is self-trust, but self-trust really encompasses so many different topics and ideas and ways of being in the world. So I can't just talk about self-trust, in talking about self-trust I have to talk about so many other things.” (11:10) “Each of these pillars are important and can stand on their own, but they are most powerful when they bridge together. And that is the foundation of self-trust for an individual.” (15:01) “Almost all of us have privileges in some places, even marginalized folks have privileges in some areas. So we can’t look at the marginalization without also looking at the privilege and how we contribute, knowingly or unknowingly, to the advancement of these systems.” (21:03) “So often when someone is struggling to trust their own body, it is actually because they have gotten messages about bodies like theirs, and what a body like theirs should be or should look like or should feel like.” (32:06) “For everyone who is interested in building more self-trust, the key to doing that is that you have to get to know you and what you want and what you value.” (35:08) Featured on the Show Food Freedom Mini-Course Strength Workout Mini-Course Follow Your Arrow Membership Program Shohreh Davoodi Website One-On-One Coaching with Shohreh Conjuring Up Courage Podcast Follow Shohreh on Instagram | Facebook | TikTok Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Another episode for a Friday and honestly...been in a mind fog lately after a crappy work week getting the best of my anxiety. I needed some time at home with my family during their Spring Break. Today was a good day upstate weather wise so we did some Family Tings. Other than that, you ever come across a random recommended video on youtube and end up in a rabbit hole of videos on the toilet? Ended up leaving that bathroom 45 min later with numb butt cheeks and the thought that...Gen Z kids got some entitlement issues.Time Stamps: 02:15 Taking a mental health day, I swear this shit should be acceptable for PTO no If, and's or buts. 03:08 Branch Binging….Godzilla vs Kong Hype train has come to halt for me, it's getting nice out so we been out and about lately. Intervention has been our bedtime binge lately, crazy ass wypipo on this show. 07:55 Honestly we thought mental health would've been seriously affected during this pandemic and quarantines. Surprisingly people have been using this time at home to workout more and enjoying recreational activities outside. 11:05 Hitting some more parenting milestones, we did some family tings during the spring break. Less Wifi and more sunlight, some backyard fires and smores to end the night. 13:43 Found this a little fascinating, the CDC is saying that racism is serious health issue with the attacks on minorities in communities. It TAKES minorities fighting minorities for a group to classify racism as a public health issue…but where was this 50+ years ago. 18:18 Some of ya'll may know this but some may not and prob won't but there was a Facebook data breached where half a billion data was leaked to the black market. 20:50 Youtube family vlogs put me into a Cancel Culture Youtube rabbit hole…the amount of abuse that's put on public display is CRAZY that it takes a Gen Z to make a youtube video before authorities step in. 30:18 The one terrible goal you can put upon yourself as a parent is having the mentality that "I want my kids to have what I could never" you will never achieve this goal.

I love stories of redemption and seeing how the Lord can change a heart and reach others for the betterment of themselves, their families, and the community around them. Our guest on the show today is Monica Cline, from “It Takes A Family”. Monica is the Founder and President of It Takes a Family. Prior to this she had the unique experience of being a former Comprehensive Sex Educator trained by the LGBTQ community and Planned Parenthood. She now delivers a powerful message to parents encouraging them to be the leading voice in their children’s life regarding marriage, sex, identity, and healthy relationships from a Biblical worldview. She offers resources and skills necessary to strengthen family trust, ensuring that parents are their children's greatest advocates. Her goal is to help parents lead at home, in their community and through policy. The great success and stability of any nation is the health and strength of the family. Musician Dave Bellevue joins us to talk about his journey struggling with mental health and anxiety after losing his best friend to suicide. Drawing from his own experience Dave became a story teller for The JED Foundation, a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation’s teens and young adults. Then Dave saw a need for more mental health resources in the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community, so he founded a mental health organization called Swag for Stigma earlier this year. Swag for Stigma's mission is to share relevant BIPOC statistical data, resource information on where to get help, and access to identify therapists who are also BIPOC. Their ultimate goal is to launch the “It Takes a Village” initiative to donate cost-covered therapy sessions and support for under served communities. As we all know, it does take a village! Thanks, Dave! You can find more information at www.swagforstigma.org.   or   @SwagforStigma on InstagramAlso be sure to check out Dave's band, Oxymorrons (with 2 "R"s) on YouTube.WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGEAnd hey, and if you are on Facebook, we invite you to join our Facebook group "Regular People Talking About Mental Health".
