In this episode of Fake Ass Book Club, Moni and Kat finally tackle The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah, the iconic urban fiction novel first published in 1999 by Simon & Schuster. Confession time: urban fiction is not typically their preferred genre, which is one reason it took so long for them to pick up this book. After years of hearing readers praise the book as a modern classic, they decided it was finally time to see for themselves why this story has captured the hearts and minds of millions. Following the rise and fall of Winter Santiaga, the daughter of a wealthy Brooklyn drug kingpin, the novel explores money, power, survival, family, and the consequences of the choices we make. Two decades after its release, the book continues to spark conversation and inspire debate among readers. Were Moni and Kat won over by Winter's story? Did this classic live up to the hype?  The Coldest Winter Ever is often credited with helping bring urban fiction into the mainstream and remains one of the most influential Black fiction novels of the last 25+ years. Tune in as they share their honest thoughts on a book they never planned to read, but ultimately couldn't ignore. Cheers!

Welcome back! This week the ladies dive into "The Drama", the uncomfortable, anxiety-inducing A24 film starring  Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. What starts as an awkward romantic drama about an engaged couple heading into their wedding week, quickly spirals into something much darker after a “worst thing you've ever done” conversation goes completely off the rails. Emma reveals a disturbing part of her teenage past, and that one confession detonates the relationship, the "friend"group, and the entire wedding weekend. We break down the film's tense atmosphere, uncomfortable chemistry, and the bigger conversations surrounding alienation, radical honesty, identity, and whether people should be permanently defined by their teenage years. We also discuss how the movie intentionally challenges audience expectations by centering a Black woman in a narrative typically associated with a very different demographic, and whether that changes the level of empathy viewers are willing to extend. If you watched this movie and immediately needed to unpack all of that emotional chaos with somebody, this episode is for you. Cheers!

"Their Eyes Were Watching God" brings to life a Southern love story with the wit and pathos found only in the writing of Zora Neale Hurston. Out of print for almost thirty years, due largely to initial audiences' rejection of its strong black female protagonist, Hurston's classic has since its 1978 reissue become perhaps the most widely read and highly acclaimed novel in the canon of African-American literature. The story follows Janie's journey from a voiceless teenage girl to a self-actualized woman through three marriages in the American South. Tune in to hear why this book is so beloved by the hosts.  Welcome back! This week, the ladies disect Sex and the City, which began as a newspaper column by Candace Bushnell for The New York Observer (1994–1996), chronicling the romantic escapades and social lives of Bushnell and her friends in New York. The columns were compiled into a 1996 book that inspired the hit HBO series, two films, and the Max revival “And Just Like That…Candace Bushnell's alter ego, Carrie, serves as our narrator. She introduces readers to characters like Carrie, Mr. Big, and Samantha—navigating love, status, and sex in a world of privilege, parties, and heartbreak. The book isn't a traditional novel but rather a collection of loosely connected essays and vignettes. It paints a portrait of a certain type of single woman—successful, savvy, and navigating a social world where love is often transactional and appearances mean everything. You've seen them on HBO, but this is the book that started it all.*Please be advised this episode is intended for adult audiences and contains adult language and content. "Gorgeously translated into English for the first time by Anam Zafar and Sophie Lewis, Fearless and Free comprises stories and reflections in Baker's own voice, drawn from conversations with the French writer Marcel Sauvage that began in 1926 and continued for more than 20 years afterwards. They cover her early life in St Louis, her adventures in Europe, and eventual transformation into, as Sauvage puts it, an “actress and French citizen of worldwide renown”.Dina Nayeri of the Guardian *Please be advised this episode is intended for adult audiences and contains adult language and content.
