PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about the canonical playlist that's part of every Independence Day fireworks display, the time Scott accidentally hit Lee Greenwood in the face with a water balloon, and how our Patreon supporters can get the chance to get their hands on one of the very first copies of Dave Alvin's forthcoming book New Highway. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with "Fourth of July" composer Dave Alvin on the Fourth of July! ABOUT DAVE ALVIN:Grammy-winning artist, musician, songwriter, poet, and roots music pioneer Dave Alvin launched his professional career when he and his brother Phil founded the Downey, California, based group The Blasters. Blending rockabilly and R&B, Dave became the band's primary songwriter, penning classics such as “Marie, Marie,” “American Music,” “Border Radio,” “Jubilee Train,” “Little Honey,” “Dark Night,” and “Long White Cadillac,” which later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam. After a brief stint as a member of the band X, Dave launched a solo career and continued to craft critically-acclaimed songs that defy genre, including “Fourth of July,” “Haley's Comet,” “Dry River,” “King of California,” “Abilene,” “Ashgrove,” “Harlan County Line,” “Johnny Ace is Dead,” and “Downey to Lubbock,” a collaboration with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Dave's songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Little Milton, Buckwheat Zydeko, Shakin' Stevens, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, and others. Additionally, his music has been featured on a number of TV soundtracks, including Justified and The Sopranos.

Sharkey's Treehouse: Presenting New Musicians, Celebrating the Legends
David Luning is in the house! David’s band mates joined him in the studio for their latest cd “Restless” The Rink Studios (TRS) for us, with Ben Dubin on bass, Linden Reed on drums and Dave Sampson on guitar, and they’re a great bunch of guys. They sat down with me at my home base in Sacramento TRS and performed a four-song set from “Restless” in front of a live audience; and we didn’t want it end. ‘Restless” was produced and engineered by Karl Derfler. His credits include Tom Waits, Dave Matthews, Mother Hips, Smash Mouth and Live among many others. David has a lot of experience and miles under his feet in a relatively short amount of time. He attended Berkelee School of Music, he’s almost always constantly touring, and he’s an American Idol contestant. Keith Urban told him he had ”staunch originality, no one’s doing what you do…good singer songwriter, story-telling guy” and Jennifer Lopez commented on his performance saying “I love it. He has a really, really beautiful tone.” David writes, records and performs all of his own songs and he’ll talk about his process. He’ll also talk about the music industry as it is now and how it’s a double-edged sword. Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, 'Restless,' and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything. His self- released debut album, 'Just Drop On By,' garnered acclaim from both critics and fellow musicians alike, with country megastar Keith Urban hailing Luning's "staunch originality." Songs from the album landed numerous film and TV placements, most recently on NBC's 'Grimm,' and Luning's reputation for exhilarating live performances earned him dates with luminaries like Jackie Greene, Dave and Phil Alvin, and Elvin Bishop, along with a slew of festival performances up and down the West Coast. Rebellious troubadour” as called by Rolling Stone, David Luning is celebrated for his compelling, dynamic live performances sharing the stage with Tedeschi Trucks, Chris Issak, Robert Earl Keen, Jay Leno, Son Volt, Jackie Greene among others. Luning’s sophmore album, 'Restless', showcases a collection of songs that explores themes of love, acceptance, and real life with a heartfelt universality. The Alternate Root hails, “He has set the bar high with thoughtful and unique styling, well-crafted lyrics and versatile vocals." Phil Alvin died – twice – while on tour in Spain. Complications from an abscessed tooth put him in a hospital in Valencia, where he flatlined and had to be shocked back to life two times. In typical rock n’ roll fashion, when he finally woke up – he felt perfectly fine. Phil’s band, The Blasters, have their first new record in seven years out called Fun on a Saturday Night. We talk life, death, and the stories behind the songs on the new record – including “Breath of My Love,” about a deranged lover with a knife in her hand. We also go back to the origins of the band, and some advice he got from R&B legend Big Joe Turner.
