Linedy Genao - After receiving her bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of Connecticut, she began a career in banking. However, after receiving a message encouraging her to audition for the first open call of Gloria & Emilio Estefan's On Your Feet, her life changed forever. With only high school theater experience, Linedy landed her first Broadway-bound show, On Your Feet, and hasn't stopped since! Linedy has continued to rise through the ranks, most recently as the Alana/Zoe understudy on Dear Evan Hansen prior to its Broadway closing and on its first national tour. She was also recently named in Variety's “10 Broadway Stars to Watch” list. Additional credits include Passing Through, West Side Story, Havana Music Hall, A Taste of Things to Come, and In the Heights. She is honored to be the first Latina/Dominican-American to originate an Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway-bound musical. Kris Carrasco is a genderqueer, Latino-American artist hailing from the Appalachian mountains of western North Carolina. Born to immigrant parents, his first taste of the stage was seeing Jennifer Lopez star in the hit movie Selena, and through the incredible power of representation, a flame was lit. Kris' love of storytelling stems from the belief that as artists, we are the storytellers of the human experience and that it is our duty to record humanity (and our experiences with it) as diversely and specifically as possible with a 21st-century anti-racist lens on everything. Kris' greatest hope is that anyone that comes to a performance of theirs leaves with a greater sense of empathy for themselves, their community, and most importantly those who've lived experience is different. SUEÑOS tells the untold story of three generations of a Mexican-American family and their pursuit of the American Dream. The story primarily focuses on the viewpoint of protagonist, Ali Viramontes,  and his journey to becoming a world renown composer. Juilliard is his one-way ticket and he won't let anything stop him, even if he has to sacrifice those close to him. Obstacles become too challenging to overcome and seems there's no other way, but to continue the cycle that tore down his family's dreams. This original, contemporary musical celebrates Latiné/Latinx people and cultures, and weaves their stories into the fabric of the American Musical Theatre.

Another insightful episode in the bag. This week playwright Roger Q Mason stops by and unpacks the queer perspective of playwriting discussing how performance compliments writing (and vice versa), embracing and pushing discomfort as well as thematic layering and poetic expressionism. We also delve into the definition of being a "jazz playwright", writing from the root, transferring curiosity to the page, the process of getting your work out, writing interior life, and how to find a mentor. This, of course, is just a smattering of what you'll find within this interview, so listen to its entirety, and I promise you'll take away something new in the craft of playwriting. Enjoy!Roger Q. Mason is a playwright and screenwriter whose work investigates the intersection of history, memory, and identity. They holds an MFA in Writing from Northwestern University, MA in English from Middlebury College, and BA in English and Theatre from Princeton University and their plays have been seen on Broadway at Circle in the Square (Circle Reading Series); Off/Off-Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop, New Group, American Theatre of Actors, Flea Theatre, and Access Theater. Their work has also been named finalist of the Geffen Playhouse Writers Room, BRIC Lab Residency, Lark Playwrights Week, and Screencraft Play Award, and their play The White Dress was semi-finalist for the 2018 Bay Area Playwrights Festival and the inaugural Shonda Rhimes Emerging Playwright Award. Actor and singer-songwriter Alicia Witt has been acting since the age of 7, when she made her film debut in David Lynch's sci fi classic Dune. She was most recently seen in I Care A Lot on Netflix, starring Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest, and leading the cast of the December release Modern Persuasion. Other recent credits include Netflix's Orange Is The New Black as Zelda; along with The Walking Dead, Supernatural, ABC's Nashville, FOX's The Exorcist, and Showtime's 3rd season of David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Films include Two Weeks' Notice, Last Holiday, The Upside of Anger, Mr. Holland's Opus, Urban Legend, Four Rooms, 88 Minutes, Urban Legend and Vanilla Sky. Alicia is also well known to Hallmark Channel audiences for her Christmas movies, beginning with 2013's A Very Merry Mixup; her eighth annual holiday film for the network, Christmas Tree Lane, which she produced, wrote the story for, and featured two of Witt's original Christmas songs, was released for the 2020 holiday season. Witt co-produced her next album, The Conduit, with Jordan Lehning and Bill Reynolds in Nashville TN, where she resides. Led by the first two singles, Chasing Shadows and Talk To You, the record comes out September 24th. A classically trained former competitive pianist, Alicia's music has been described as 'sharply personal, boldly melodic pop originals in the Carole King/Billy Joel vein' and 'touching lost-and-found love ballads' (Philadelphia Inquirer). Alicia has performed her original piano-driven pop music all over the world, including at the renowned Grand Ole Opry. Alicia has also opened for Ben Folds Five, Rachel Platten, and Jimmy Webb, to name a few. Her 2018 release, 15000 Days, was produced by Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King (James Bay, Norah Jones, Kings of Leon, Dawes). Witt's previous album, Revisionary History, was produced by Ben Folds and was described as 'Grey Seal era Elton John, an alt-universe Fiona Apple, and a film noir chanteuse notching her nights in cigarette burns on the fallboard' (NASHVILLE SCENE). As a musical guest, Alicia has appeared on numerous shows including NPR's Weekend Edition, CBS' Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Queen Latifah Show, WGBH'S Open Studio on PBS, Good Day Nashville, KTLA's Morning Show, Good Morning Washington, and many performances on Hallmark's Home & Family Show. Alicia's music has been heard in numerous TV shows and movies over the past 10 years, including her ironic Christmas song 'I'm Not Ready for Christmas', which was featured in her Hallmark Christmas movie of the same name. Witt can add author to her resume with Small Changes, out October 5 2021 from Harper Horizons. The book is an inspiring, welcoming and simple yet effective guide to health, happiness and sustainable living. Instead of promoting a rigid diet, Small Changes will instead offer readers a stress-and-judgment-free approach for enacting easy, incremental changes across all areas of life. On stage, Witt starred in Neil LaBute's Tony nominated play Reasons to Be Pretty at the Geffen Playhouse. She also appeared at London's Royal Court theatre in Terry Johnson's Piano/Forte and made her West End debut with The Shape of Things. She has also performed at Williamstown Theatre Festival and is a regular participant in the 24-Hour Plays on Broadway and the 24-Hour Musicals off-Broadway. Other significant roles include Showtime's House of Lies, NBC's Friday Night Lights, CBS' The Mentalist and NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She spent 4 years on the CBS hit show Cybill and has also appeared on the HBO series The Sopranos, CBS's Two and a Half Men, Ally McBeal, and David Lynch's original Twin Peaks.

Not only is Kate one of my dearest friends, but this little lady is an absolutely brilliant teacher, a total witch, and on a path that I think you'll enjoy hearing about in this uncertain time. Kate Bass, originally from Anchorage Alaska, now based in Los Angeles, performs extensively in America and abroad in many varying musical genres. She made her solo debut with the New York Philharmonic in Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center under the baton of Case Scaglione; she also appeared in the Emmy-nominated production of Carousel, televised on PBS’s “Live at Lincoln Center.” In recent years, she has sung numerous times at Carnegie Hall (Der Vampyr, The Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem, Elijah), as well as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center (La Farsa Amarosa). Kate made her New York City Center principal debut as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, a role she has taken to Wolf Trap Opera and the Colorado Symphony, and continues to tour nationally and internationally with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. She recently appeared as Princess Ida in Princess Ida at the New York Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, and Off-Broadway at the Saint George Theatre in the world premiere of Trains the musical, as well as the Musical Guest for 24 Hour Plays at the Atlantic Theater Company.Equally at home in jazz music, Kate has performed in cabaret at the Metropolitan Room and (le) poisson rouge in New York, and at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. She has recorded as a soloist for numerous film scores with music by Arturo Cardelús, David Stone Hamilton, and others; her voice was recently featured in the film “Pecado Original,” winning awards at both the Austin Film Festival and the Milan International Film Festival. Kate was also the soprano soloist for Iranian singer and setar player Hafez Nazeri’s Grammy-nominated SONY Worldwide release of “Untold” with the Rumi Symphony. Kate Bass is a composer and singer-songwriter; her debut album, “Maya,” was released in August 2012, and her first single aired on British radio in early September 2013. She released her new EP, “More”, in February 2016 and her May 2017 crowd-funded album, “Songs of the Open Road,” debuted Off-Broadway at the Triad Theater in New York City. She has performed her music live to sold out crowds across America, and has been hailed by the press as “easy to love,” “infectious,” and “one of the best vocalists on the scene today.” Kate maintains a full private voice studio based out of Pasadena, California; as well as coaching many young up-and-coming singer-songwriters and musical theater performers, she has taught as a Teaching Artist in Residence for the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York City. She teaches master classes and workshops on voice, songwriting, and musical theater all over the world, from Classical Singer Conventions throughout the country to programs in Lebanon and Africa. She currently teaches on vocal faculty at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. www.katebassmusic.com@katebassmusicLike this episode? Share it! So I tried hard to get a better format, and screw it up immediately by saying it's episode 513. Sigh. We talk about the music of Devo Spice, who gives permission for my before- and after- stream music, and I very clumsily recommend his song Spider Verses.  Speaking of music, I also talk about Loser by Garfunkel & Oates. This version edits the F-bombs. About goals- remember that you want to make goals you can keep under your control. "Want to write the next Star Wars novel," not under your control. "Want to write a book by end of year," yes. "Sign with dream agent," can't control, but "research and query many agents," yes. I bring up 24 Hour Plays, where I queried to see if they'd like a writer (under my control), and never heard anything back (not under my control.) I did everything I could, so I'm happy with that. Wendi and Dfernando's seventeenth episode and their guest interview is Academy Award nominated & multi-award winning actress, screenwriter, playwright and producer Nia Vardalos.  Born and raised in Canada, Nia Vardalos is an alumna of the Chicago-based Second City comedy repertory company.  She gained global attention with her 2002 film adaptation of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, which she had written and starred in as a one-woman play in Los Angeles.  Based on her personal experiences and family, the film was a critical success and remains the highest-grossing romantic comedy film of all time. Vardalos went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing (Original Screenplay), a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.  The film inspired the CBS series MY BIG FAT GREEK LIFE and led to a 2016 sequel MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, which she also wrote and starred in and featured the original film’s cast. Vardalos’ other notable films: CONNIE AND CARLA, which she also wrote and starred in, opposite Toni Collette and David Duchovny; made her directorial debut with the film I HATE VALENTINE’S DAY; MY LIFE IN RUINS with Richard Dreyfuss (the first American production given permission to film at the Acropolis); and co-wrote with Academy Award winner Tom Hanks the film LARRY CROWNE. She continues to write screenplays, but regularly returns to television.  Her first appearances as an actress were on numerous hit television series like THE DREW CAREY SHOW, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, BOY MEETS WORLD and TWO GUYS, A GIRL AND A PIZZA PLACE.  Other notable television appearances have been on DROP DEAD DIVA, COUGAR TOWN, GREY’S ANATOMY, LAW & ORDER: SVU, JANE THE VIRGIN, THE CATCH, GRAVES, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND and most recently the TV movies SAME TIME, NEXT CHRISTMAS, POISONED LOVE: THE STACEY CASTOR STORY and CHRISTMAS ROMANCE AL DENTE.  From 2015 to 2017, Vardalos and Ian Gomez co-presented the first two seasons of ABC TV’s THE GREAT AMERICAN BAKING SHOW.   She made her Broadway debut in THE 24 HOUR PLAYS 2006 as Mary in Julia Cho’s THE FIRST TREE IN ANTARCTICA, directed by Andrew McCarthy, followed by the 2009 The Actors Fund's CHANCE & CHEMISTRY, a centennial celebration of Frank Loesser. A chance meeting with Tony Award & Emmy Award winning director Thomas Kail (HAMILTON, IN THE HEIGHTS, FX’s FOSSE/VERDON) led to her adapting for the NY stage Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 book TINY BEAUTY THINGS, where she originated the role of Sugar.  The play had 2 acclaimed runs at The Public Theater in 2016 and 2017 and had a limited run at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2019.  On May 6, 2020 Vardalos and the entire original cast of the play did a live-stream reading of the play as a benefit for The Actors Fund.   After thirteen distinct in vitro fertilization attempts had failed, Vardalos’ struggle to become a mother ultimately led her and then husband Ian Gomez to adopt.  She went on to tell her journey in her New York Times best-selling book INSTANT MOM, which was published in 2014.Also on Episode 17, Wendi brings up cryotherapy, hot flashes, and the weekly RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT mentions Comedy Central's Emmy Award winning series DRUNK HISTORY, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Broadway's HAMILTON and Wim Hof's deep breathing method. Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Nia Vardalos and her TwitterRemember to subscribe to GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com
