One of the best parts about music is the non-verbal communication of it all. But there's more mind-melding than just that, isn't there? How about when you find yourself in lockstep with your band, with the groove, with the direction, with the harmonies, with the desires? Music can really make things magical, and your two favorite weekend warriors share stories this week that highlight this in at least three different ways. GA-20 was formed by friends Pat Faherty and Matthew Stubbs in Boston, MA in 2018. The project was born out of their mutual love of heavy traditional Blues, R&B, and Rock & Roll of the late 50s and early 60s. Faherty and Stubbs bonded over legendary artists like Lazy Lester, J.B. Lenoir, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Junior Wells. Feeling a void in current music, the duo have set out to write, record and perform a modern version of this beloved art form. Joined by drummer Tim Carman in 2019, GA-20 is a trio of 2 guitars, vocals and drums. Raw, passionate and honest performance, both on stage and in the studio, is the only goal. In June 2021 GA-20 announced the new album “GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It…You Might Like It!,” a 50th anniversary celebration of Hound Dog Taylor, to be released August 20 via Colemine Records in partnership with the legendary Alligator Records. Stubbs has spent the past 13 years as guitarist for Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. During that time he has also backed up and toured with such Blues giants as John Hammond, James Cotton, Junior Watson and James Harman. Stubbs also leads his own original instrumental psych-rock band, 'The Antiguas.' Hound Dog Taylor as per Wiki “Hound Dog” Taylor was born with an abnormality: he had a sixth, very pinky finger on each hand. He grew up around Tchule and Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta, as did several other black blues musicians ( BB King , Albert King , John Lee Hooker , Muddy Waters , etc.). He made his first musical experiences playing the piano. He didn't really start playing the guitar until he was 21 years old. His musical style was strongly influenced by the then rising Elmore James . In his twenties he played in the Mississippi area, where he could be heard with Sonny Boy Williamson on the legendary radio show " King Biscuit Time ". But Taylor was expelled from Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 because he had a relationship with a white woman. He worked in Chicago as an electrician and other part-time jobs until the late 1950s. He also appeared as a guitarist in pompous night bars in southern Chicago. He was called “Hound Dog” because he was so fond of women and chased the steppe wolfish after them. During this time he changed his previously classic e-tuning to an energetic bottleneck style. In 1957 he finally devoted himself only to his music career. In 1960 he met the guitarist Brewer Phillips . The two became friends and formed the band The HouseRockers . With the first singles such as Baby Is Coming Home, Take Five and Christine , however, they met with little interest outside of Chicago. In 1965, drummer Ted Harvey joined the band. With him, the HouseRockers found their typically loud, hard blues accent with Taylor's rough voice and his slide play (bottleneck) on cheap Japanese guitars as well as Phillips' bass lines, which, played on a Fender Telecaster , replaced the missing bass. Bruce Iglauer , later Taylor's manager, got to hear the band for the first time in 1969 in Chicago's Eddie Shaw's. However, Iglauer's boss did not want to sign a record deal with Taylor. With its own financial support, Iglauer made it possible in 1971 to release Taylor's first record on the Alligator Records label . Without knowing it, he founded the now world-famous blues label. The album was a success with 9,000 records sold. The singles Give Me Back My Wig and It's Alright became the most famous songs. In 1973 the second record Natural Boogie came out on the market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support
American Babylon, first issued in 1995, was produced by Bruce Springsteen whose friendship with Grushecky predates the album's sessions and has endured in the intervening decades. The new American Babylon2 CD set offers 27 tracks including the album's original 12 selections among which are “Chain Smokin',” “Only Lovers Left Alive,” “What Did You Do In The War” as well as “Homestead” and “Dark and Bloody Ground,” the latter two co-written with Springsteen. Original demo recordings of “Chain Smokin',” "Never Be Enough Time” and “Only Lovers Left Alive, never previously released, round out the first disc. A 13-track companion disc documents live performances recorded at Nick's Fat City in Pittsburgh during the Houserockers' legendary “October Assault” tour that launched the album that month in 1995. Joe and the band performed not only in Grushecky's hometown but also in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago and Asbury Park as well. Springsteen is heard on eight of the album's tracks and his voice is heard on “Light of Day,” his own song, as well as on the Chuck Berry version of “Down The Road Apiece,” the album's closer. One track featured on the live disc that is not part of the American Babylon tune stack is “Pumping Iron,” a fan favorite from The Iron City Houserockers' 1980 Have A Good Time But Get Out Alive album. On the topic of collaborative songwriting, Grushecky commented to Rolling Stone, “It's a great thing for me to write with a talent like Bruce who is obviously one of the greats. I think that in a quiet way it sort of says something about my writing ability.” Rolling Stone's Andy Greene chronicled the relationship between Joe and American Babylon's recently: "As the leader of the Pittsburgh-based Iron City Houserockers, Joe Grushecky hammered out four heartland rock albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These won over more critics than fans, so he became a special education teacher to support his family. Still, he maintained a close friendship with Bruce Springsteen, and in 1995, they teamed up for American Babylon. The two remain tight and play together at least once a year, but this album remains their greatest joint accomplishment.” The collaboration was not pre-planned and came about quite organically. Joe recalled, “I was thinking about making a new record and had a couple songs written. My wife suggested ‘Why don't you ask Bruce to play?' I hemmed and hawed for a while and finally we got in touch. It sort of just took on a life of its own. It was fun working with Bruce; he added little twists and turns that I wouldn't have come up with on my own which made the record a lot of fun to do musically. Once we got together, it just seemed like we were real sure of what we were doing. There wasn't a lot of second guessing and pulling your hair thinking, ‘Is this good?” We just sort of went in and did it in a very relaxed atmosphere, so it was fun.” The 25thanniversary edition of American Babylon was preceded by the August 27 release of the live version of “American Babylon” (title song) as well as the demo for “Only Lovers Left Alive.”

Today your two favorite weekend warriors turn their attention to efficiency and how you can make your band's setup process happen faster, and with more consistent results. Paul had a recent gig which highlighted this for him, but I'm sure we've all been there, right? Do you remember? Ba Dee Ya. Then it's on to how to approach replacing a long-time member of your band. Dave's going through it with Fling, Paul's going through it with The Houserockers, and they're not alone. What's that thing we say at the end of each episode? Do you remember? Ba Dee Ya. LITTLE HAT is not a person, it's a band from The Netherlands that plays a their own furious and raw version of blues and early rock 'n' roll. Like kindred spirits Jesus on a Tortilla from Milan (see No Border Blues #3), they are inspired by the deep cuts of obscure blues pioneers such as Joe Hill Louis and Sunnyland Slim, but play with a heaping dose of frantic energy. Little Hat employs the rare trio instrumentation of harmonica /vocals (Machiel Meijers), guitar (Willem van Dullemen) and drums (Paolo de Stitger). Little Hat is also intergenerational: Paolo's in his 20s, Machiel's not yet 40, and Willem recently turned 70! Machiel and Willem were in the long-running and popular Dutch blues band Stackhouse, but they are finding a new freedom with the "three-man-one-man-band" approach of Little Hat. Sometimes it sounds to me like Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers with harmonica! Little Victor, who we've interviewed in Episode 14, produced Little Hat's latest CD "Wine, Whiskey and Wimmen" for the German label Rhythm Bomb Records. The purity of their vintage tones together with the forceful sonic attack of the recording proves this to be a fruitful pairing. You can find out more, and purchase their CD, at www.littlehatband.com. Take a blues journey with No Border Blues, the only blues podcast focused on international blues artists and hidden blues scenes around the world. Delmark recording artist Johnny Burgin and producer Stephanie Tice shine a spotlight on notable international blues performers, discuss the blues scenes in their home countries, and present intimate and exclusive musical performances. Stef couldn't make this interview, sorry!-- but she will be back in the next episode. As promised, Paul and Dave talk through what they know and have learned about setting yourself up to live stream from your house or studio. There are definitely some tips and tricks, and your two favorite weekend warriors share as many of them as they've found. Then it's on to embracing the muse. Dave had an epiphany moment this past weekend when he broke through his sadness of sequester and started tracking drums, only to find that there was an even better drum part for a new FLING song waiting right around the corner. One of the best questions you can answer before you start to do anything musical is: who's driving the bus? Paul and Dave take this question through a few permutations. First, Dave laments some of the struggles he's having getting his studio setup to the point where he can track some new Fling songs, and the question of who's driving the bus of the recording project comes up. Then it's on to the topic of the Houserockers. Paul discusses the evolution of his band... and who's driving the bus! Lastly, it's on to the acoustic format. A listener asks: "Who drives the bus here?" Well, you'll have to listen to find out, won't you? Making the leap to in-ear monitors is one of the most difficult experiences any gigging musician can go through. From getting the right fit to getting the right mix to simply becoming comfortable with that new level of detachment, in-ears take dedication. The payoff is big, of course, in terms of being able to hear better and saving oneself from future hearing damage. Dave watched Trey Anastasio battle this transition on stage over the past weekend. In response to that, Dave discusses a few of the tips and tricks he has applied when helping other musicians with this over the years. But that's not all, of course! Paul Kent is updating the songlist for his band, The Houserockers, and talks through not only the tunes, but the new process he and the band are using to learn them for their upcoming show season. This best-of episode features four musicians who appeared as guests in early episodes of the podcast. I chose these guys, because their insights say so much about the little things musicians can do to build a career or keep their gig calendars full. Texas Guitar Slinger Chris Raspante on Marketing When I asked Chris what he's learned about marketing during his rich career, he went straight to relationships and networking. He lays out all the things that a musician needs to be in order to get hired, to get invited back, and to be remembered. Without hesitation Chris says that these qualities will give you the best marketing results you can ever ask for. Gig Gab Co Host & Houserockers Front Man Paul Kent on the Value of Building a Network My conversation with Paul Kent chimes in on how to assemble and sustain a quality band by building a network. His 11-piece Houserockers averages about 100 gigs per year, so Paul definitely an expert in this area. He views his network as a giving opportunity and a Karmic thing that shows him love, time and time again. Bill Lonero on Drive, Perseverance, Passion, & Focus Bill Lonero's career is relatively young, but he's learned a lot. His growing wisdom compliments his strong opinions. Bill talks about drive, perseverance, passion and focus as though nothing else matters. That and ignoring negativity. Robert Berry Credits His Success to Family Support and a Backup Plan Robert Berry has a very impressive musician resume, and he's a longtime business owner. His values are simple and his approach to music is uncomplicated. Paul and Dave each had experiences – from both sides of the "rail" this week – with that concept where musicians need to manage what's going on inside their bodies while on stage. They talk through Paul's first gig with the Houserockers new drummer, and Dave's experience watching seasoned, Grammy-winning professionals ... all of which deal with the fact that every musician on any stage – at any pay rate – is simply a human that has to deal with being human! Then it's on to some new gear, starting with some in-ear monitors Dave found at CES for less than $25! Paul asks about the new Boss KATANA AIR amplifier, too. All of this on Gig Gab! This episode of The Unstarving Musician's Podcast features yet another one of my good friends, Paul Kent. At the time of our conversation, Paul was on track to perform well over 100 gigs in 2017, which is his norm--and he gets paid well doing it. Paul is cohost of the wildly popular Gig Gag Podcast, which is a podcast for working musicians. His eleven piece band, The Houserockers has been a San Francisco Bay area crowd pleaser for 17 years, and they're showing no signs of slowing down. He's also among the smartest guys I know when it comes to building relationships and successful music collaborations. But wait, there's more. Paul is also co producer of Los Gatos Music in the Park, a South San Francisco Bay Area event that annually boasts thousands of attendees. Needless to say, he's knows a thing or two about business, marketing and live music performance. Pay close attention, because Paul shares some extremely valuable insights for musicians. Enjoy.

Joe Grushecky discusses his musical career with TAPinto Greater Olean Co-Editor Richard Lee. Grushecky and the Houserockers are performing in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on Friday, June 16. The show, which will take place at Yanks Old Niagara, also will feature Evan "EJ" Rotella with special guest and Houserocker, Danny Gochnour, and Niagara's own Cory Cruise.
You know where your amps and drums and mics go, but what about your mains? Any ideas? It's worth not just making an assumption every time you walk into a new room, and Paul and Dave start that conversation for you. Merchandise can either be a huge benefit or a huge time-suck for your band, and it all depends on who you are. Listen to Paul and Dave and then share your thoughts with them, too! Of course, it wouldn't be GigGab without a philosophical discussion of some type, and Paul leads us all down the path of discussing when it's time to turn down a gig. Phish cites their new "No Analysis" rule as a foundational reason they're still playing together. Paul and Dave take a look at this and discuss whether or not this might work in your band (or theirs!). But first, Dave's just finished two weeks of Bitter Pill, and he debriefs the experience thus far with Paul, going into some uncharted waters and discussing how important it is to push outside your comfort zone, even if only just a bit. Paul and his band, The Houserockers, are considering some new songs so he and Dave talk a bit about what it takes to turn a new song into a hit for your band. All this and more in this week's GigGab! Autumn is almost here for those of us in the Northern hemisphere, and the gigs change right along with the New England leaves. Even though Paul's not in New England (or, well, not usually), he's experiencing the end-of-summer effect with his west coast gigs, too. Dave's coming out to sub for The Houserockers in a couple of weeks, so it's time for him and Paul to chat through some of the details required to ensure a good gig. Equipment, dress code, charts and confidence are the topics discussed today, and it's a good one! On top of that, listener Kevin has a question about how much input and influence a subbing drummer should exert. Dave and Paul have slightly differing approaches to answering this particular question. Don't worry, it's only a little awkward! Buckle up, press play and enjoy the ride.
Paul's been doing a lot of vocal rehearsals lately as The Houserockers prep for their summer season, so he and Dave spend some quality time dissecting what makes a vocal rehearsal successful, including the main goal of doing such a thing. In addition, discussing that summer season prep leads your two favorite weekend warriors into a discussion about the tolls that performing takes, physically, and how they deal with that.
After delaying a day Paul and Dave take to the mics and let their headcold-infused minds loop their way through the topics for this week's show. Paul's excited about some new tunes that he's doing with The Houserockers and, well, heck, he's excited about everything today! Hear him and Dave talk through those tunes plus visit subjects like using a click live, singing without straining, Paul Rodgers and ... The Cure! The topics are varied, yes, but you know your two favorite weekend warriors and they address them all very passionately. Download and enjoy! Stuff mentioned (with more coming...) This week Paul and Dave have a verbal jam session, riffing off each others' ideas and discussing whatever comes to mind. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bill Toms joined Pittsburgh’s legendary band, The Houserockers, as lead guitarist in 1987. The band’s meteoric rise into the professional music scene enabled Bill to tour the United States and Europe repeatedly. While with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers he opened for and played with a long and impressive list of notables, such as The Band, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat and Stevie Ray Vaughn. During his 20 years of playing guitar, co-writing, and singing back-up vocals for the Houserockers, Toms recorded six studio albums and one live concert album. In 1995, the acclaimed CD, “American Babylon,” was recorded and produced by Bruce Springsteen. In this episode, Bill talked about the release of his latest CD, “Deep in the Shadows.”
