For the 20th anniversary of The Shins' second album, CHUTES TOO NARROW, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After getting their start in Albuquerque in the early nineties as a band called Flake, James Mercer, Neal Langford, Marty Crandall and Jesse Sandoval eventually morphed into The Shins. Mercer had first conceived of The Shins as an outlet for his quieter songs that weren't working for Flake. Sandoval joined him initially and when Flake called it quits in the late nineties, Langford and Crandall also ended up joining The Shins. They caught the attention of Sub Pop, who signed them to a deal and released their debut album, OH, INVERTED WORLD in 2001. The album was a result of a year of recording at home with inexpensive gear that managed to reach a large audience. For their second album, Mercer had left Albuquerque and moved to Portland, Oregon, where he set up a basement studio with some better quality gear and recorded the majority of the record at home. Ultimately, the band finished the record with Phil Ek co-producing and mixing at Avast! Recording Co. in Seattle. In this episode, James Mercer describes the pressure he was putting on himself to prove that The Shins weren't just a fluke. With the goal of making a career in music, Mercer talks about this intense period when he was challenging himself as a songwriter to come up with interesting chord progressions and unique lyrics. Mercer also talks about the interpersonal relationships and shifting power dynamics in the band and how his close friendship with Neal Langford fell apart at this time. From wanting to make a stripped down and honest record to working with Phil Ek in a proper studio to the lineup change of Dave Hernandez replacing Langford to staying up all night to write a song at the very last minute to finding inspiration from a thrift store copy of Neil Young's Harvest, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

We're on episode Sweet 16, babes!!!! Love the number 16. Anyway, this is a slower week. We get into: updates on the astrology of the WGA Strike; Full Moon in Capricorn as world-building school reality check for the impatient seagoats we love; I bring up some examples of Capricorn artists and am upset that in the moment, I forgot to list James Mercer (of the Shins), my favorite lyricist of all time (his firing of his bandmates for “aesthetic reasons” is also one of the most Capricorn things ever); after the Full Moon, the week is pretty calm. Some soft Mercury aspects for innovation and creativity! + the week ends on a motivating Aries Moon.Let me know what you think by leaving a review or a comment! If you're enjoying the pod, I ask you to please support by becoming a paid subscriber. Ice baths are a popular subject on American social media pages. Kim Kardashian, Harry Styles, Kristen Bell, Lizzo, and other stars have posted about their cold water experiences. Health claims surrounding ice baths include improved mood, increased energy, weight loss and reduced inflammation. But the science linked to some of those claims is not very strong. Here is what medical evidence, experts and fans say about cold water baths, an activity that dates back hundreds of years. Since June 2020, Dan O'Conor has jumped into Lake Michigan almost daily. The 55-year-old man lives in the city of Chicago. O'Conor used the term endorphins - “feel good” hormones released in reaction to pain, stress, exercise and other activities – to talk about his experience. “The endorphin rush … is an incredible way to wake up and just kind of shock the body and get the engine going,” he said on a recent morning when the air temperature was minus-5 Celsius.“内啡肽激增……是一种令人难以置信的唤醒方式,它只是一种刺激身体并让引擎运转的方式,”他在最近的一个早晨说,当时气温为零下 5 摄氏度。With the lake temperature at 1 degree Celsius, O'Conor did a running jump into the icy gray water. His first jump came early in the pandemic. O'Conor had too much alcohol and his wife was angry at him. She told him to “go jump in the lake.” The common saying is not usually received as a real command. But, O'Conor acted on it. He says the water felt good that June day, so he kept jumping in every day following. As the water grew colder with seasonal change, the good effect was even greater, he said. “My mental health is a lot stronger, a lot brighter. I found some zen down here coming down and jumping into the lake and shocking that body,” O'Conor said.“我的心理健康强多了,也活泼多了。 我发现这里有一些禅宗下来,跳进湖里,震撼了那个身体,”奥康纳说。Dr. Will Cronenwett of Northwestern University's Feinberg medical school tried cold-water immersion once while visiting Scandinavian friends. After a sauna, he jumped into the ice-cold water for a few minutes. He said it was a powerful experience. But Cronenwett says studying cold water immersion with a kind of scientific study known as a randomized controlled trial is difficult. This is because it is hard to develop a placebo for cold water baths. A placebo is something that has no effect. Placebos are important because scientific tests need to compare the possible effect of something with something else that does not have any physical effect. There are a few ideas about how cold water immersion affects the mind. Cronenwett says it makes the part of the nervous system that controls the resting state more active. Such an effect may increase feelings of well-being. Cold water immersion also affects the part of the nervous system that controls the fight-or-flight stress reaction. Cold water treatment on a usual basis may reduce that reaction. So, Cronenwett said, it might help people feel better able to deal with other stresses in their lives, although that is not proven. Czech researchers found that cold water immersion can increase blood levels of dopamine — another hormone — by 250 percent. High amounts have been linked with paranoia and aggression, noted James Mercer of the Arctic University of Norway. Mercer co-wrote a recent scientific paper that examined studies on the treatment. Cold water immersion raises blood pressure and increases stress on the heart. Studies have shown this is safe for healthy people and the effects are only temporary. But sometimes these effects can cause the heart to beat unevenly and can cause death, Cronenwett said. People with heart conditions or a family history of early heart disease should talk with a doctor before doing cold water immersion, he said. Repeated cold-water immersions during colder seasons have been shown to improve how the body reacts to insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar levels, Mercer noted. This might help reduce the risk of getting diabetes. It also might help people with the disease control it. More study is required to know for sure. Cold water immersion also activates brown fat. This tissue helps keep the body warm and helps it control blood sugar and insulin levels. It also helps the body burn calories.

Inspired by recent collaborations with some of America's coolest indie A-listers (Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, Danielle Haim, Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver, James Mercer, Jamila Woods) Bruce Hornsby has been prolific in recent times, making a trilogy of albums beginning with the ‘return-to-form album' Absolute Zero (2019). This trilogy is a real display of Hornsby's musical prowess and curiosity – a mix of progressive, avant garde pop and contemporary classical works. Completing the trio of albums, Flicted, Hornsby's 23rd studio record, is a collection of songs built from ‘cues' for his music to Spike Lee's films (Bruce and Spike have been collaborating since the early 90s). The album features some phenomenal side players including the producer Blake Mills (on guitar) and yMusic, a Brooklyn-based chamber sextet that lends lush arrangements throughout. Indeed as Bruce hints during our conversation, more is to come from his sessions with yMusic. “I'm a lifelong student and I'm way more interested in getting better as a musician, a vocalist and especially as a writer. I've been getting nasty letters ever since my second record saying “how dare you change”, but my silent response is “you haven't heard anything yet.”Perhaps all ‘pop' musicians of longevity should aspire to Bruce Hornsby's musically borderless, ‘post-genre' way of working. “My art of longevity is not giving a rat's ass about what's popular, or whether I'm popular but to please myself and to grow, evolve, change and expand…on and on”. When it comes to music, and Bruce Hornsby, whatever you do, don't call it a comeback. Support the show

Singer, songwriter, and producer James Mercer of The Shins wrote “New Slang” when he was living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It came out as a single and then he re-recorded it for The Shins' debut album Oh, Inverted World, which came out 20 years ago, in 2001. After Garden State came out, featuring the song "New Slang," that album went gold. And the soundtrack for the movie won a Grammy. Nowadays, James Mercer lives in Portland. I spoke to him from his home studio, and he told me how The Shins actually first started as a recording project, a side project, while he was in another band called Flake Music. In this episode, James breaks down "New Slang" and looks back at how his songwriting and his early home recording skills came together to make this iconic song. What is the common thread between Spike Lee, The Grateful Dead, Don Henly, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, Justin Vernon, James Mercer, Branford Marsalis, Snoop Dog, Polo G and countless other music luminaries? That'd be Bruce Hornsby. His collaborations, songwriting, performances and oft sampled hit "The Way It Is" have kept Bruce Hornsby a vital force in the music community for almost four decades. Online publisher Geoff Stanfield caught up with Bruce recently to chat about his early days, scoring films for Spike Lee and the joys of a stolen Rhodes piano. Enjoy! Based out of Williamsburg, VA, today’s guest first rose to national prominence with The Way It Is, his 1986 Grammy-winning debut album with The Range. The title track became the most-played song on American radio in 1987 while Tupac Shakur’s timeless song “Changes” builds on “The Way It Is” and set the stage for many subsequent versions of the track, including Polo G’s current single “Wishing For A Hero.” In 1991, Hornsby collaborated with Bonnie Raitt, playing on her iconic hit “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Additionally, Hornsby was a part-time member of the Grateful Dead from September 1990 to March 1992, performing over 100 concerts in America and Europe. He has written six full film scores for Spike Lee including his recent Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, and contributed music to four others, including 2018’s BlacKkKlansman. Last year, Hornsby released his acclaimed album, Non-Secure Connection, which featured collaborations with James Mercer, Jamila Woods, Vernon Reid, Leon Russell, Justin Vernon and more. The 13-time Grammy nominee has solidified his status as a highly sought-after collaborator. Hornsby’s own 21 albums have sold over 11 million copies worldwide, and he has appeared on over 100 records including releases with Bob Dylan, Don Henley, the Grateful Dead, Ricky Skaggs, Bob Seger, Chaka Khan, Brandon Flowers, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, Mavis Staples, Willie Nelson and more. This week we're joined by Mallory Hawk (of Double Double Whammy, How Says, and Slight Of) to discuss the iconic Garden State soundtrack! Other topics include hollywood's obsession with James Mercer, Zach Braff's obsession with TV actors, and the power of a well timed Simon & Garfunkel song.
Jayce and Connor talk James Mercer and his work with The Shins. They start talking about how great their intro song is and that somehow morphs into talking about the Shins, shit talk Los Angeles/New York, and hate hate hate on Taylor Swift (at least a little bit). They get pretentious as hell in this one.

MHM has transitioned to a technology-led future through divesting non-core businesses and operational changes. Financial year to 30 June 2020 saw EBITDA increase 199% to $2.4m. The original MHM Automation Limited company was established in 1884 by Mr James Mercer in Christchurch, New Zealand. MHM Automation, now with four New Zealand manufacturing plants, has grown to become an international leader in the design and manufacture of innovative technology solutions and the fabrication of stainless steel products. Following the restructuring in 2015, MHM Automation seeks to generate long-term shareholder value by focusing on its portfolio of food processing and packaging IP which are sold globally while continuing to drive efficiencies in its core fabrication business. In addition, MHM Automation is seeking to commercialise the S-Clave technology and get it into market within a compressed time frame. The following information was extracted from MHM Automation Limited's full year results, released 25 August 2020: Highlights for the 12 months to 30 June 2020: • Revenue of $51.6m, an increase of 35% over the prior year • Automation 81% of group sales revenue vs 61% for the prior year • Automation revenue increased 79% • EBITDA $2.4m a 199% increase on the prior year's EBITDA of $0.8m • After tax profit was $0.9m, an increase of $1.9m on the prior year. • Milmeq acquisition completed for a value of $50,000 and the repayment of the $1m interest free vendor financing In the 2020 financial year, revenue increased 35% to $51.6m, driven by a $18.5m revenue increase in the Automation business. The Automation business reported revenue of $41.8m, which was 81% of total group revenue. The full year contribution of Milmeq products was a key driver to the year on year growth, which aligns with our stated strategy of being an automation lead business. This also changed our revenue profile to be more Australasian domiciled. This increasing diversification of products and markets is another strategic goal that we continue to work on. This week we tackle The Shins' seminal indie record Oh, Inverted World. James Mercer and company blended 60s pop influences such as The Beatles & The Zombies effortlessly with Mercer's whimsical lyricism and infectious melodies to create a sound that is unmistakably The Shins. Clocking in at just 33 minutes, the record packs a powerful punch as a debut record, cementing the group as one of the most iconic indie bands of the decade. And having prominent placement in Zach Braff's Garden State certainly helped.

The Shins had a lot to prove with "Wincing the Night Away." This was the album that would decide whether the Shins would stay in the indie pop conversation, or if their inclusion in Zach Braff's film "Garden State" was just a brief lucky break. The Shins are a band I'm literally always in the mood to listen to, so we'll explore why that is. We'll also discuss the meanings I find in the cover art, James Mercer's songwriting style, and how his insomnia affected the writing and recording of "Wincing."

It's Bonus Song Thursday! Brian and Bill chat a bit about the Band's version of "Atlantic City" from their 1993 album Jericho. We fill in some of the group's history up through the 90s and marvel at Levon Helm's musicianship. We then read a listener submitted fun fact about James Mercer and Elliott Smith. And to round it out, we make a request of the listeners for some details on what they want to hear us talk about!
Bill and Brian go sans guest for the first time in months to discuss an album that came to us around the same time back in our college days, The Shins' Chutes Too Narrow (2003, Sub Pop). The band formed as primary songwriter James Mercer's new project out of a band called Flake Music back around the turn of the century. Quickly signed to indie Sub Pop, the band had modest success with their first album, 2001's Oh, Inverted World. With Chutes Too Narrow, they gained some buzz and finally broke through after actor/filmmaker Zach Braff featured their song "New Slang" in a key scene in his 2004 film Garden State. Bill and Brian discuss discovering the band early in 2004, being a little underwhelmed by their live show, Brian's summer memories as an unwilling participant at Otacon, Brian's summer memories of his family trying to set him up with a pretty girl, Bill nerding out over utopias and dystopias, and more as we make our way through the album track by track!

As summer peeks around the corner, I can't think of a more fitting song to listen to than The Shins' "New Slang." Even if it doesn't change your life, maybe it'll change your summer. Here's James Mercer performing the song on Sound Opinions.
James Mercer of The Shins stops by to showcase songs from the band’s new album Port of Morrow. Later, Jim and Greg review the new collaboration between Norah Jones and Danger Mouse.
"Broken Bells" is the self titled debut album by Dangermouse of Gnarls Barkley and James Mercer of the Shins.
One of the most renowned American indie rock bands, The Shins have carved a lasting legacy with their distinctive blend of folk, pop, and indie rock. Formed in 1996 by frontman James Mercer, a chance inclusion of “New Slang” in the indie movie classic Garden State helped to take their indie buzz mainstream just as their breakout sophomore album, Chutes Too Narrow, propelled them to indie stardom. On this episode of The Story Behind the Song, Peter Csathy speaks with The Shins' James Mercer just after the passing of former The Shins' bassist Neal Langford to discuss how Neal helped push him to perform, the conception of “New Slang” and also the more recent “Phantom Limb.”Listen to the full conversation with The Shins James Mercer and more in this episode.
