S2, Ep 18: A new series! In addition to The Youth Speaks, Three part discussions and Film reviews, I shall be doing book club episodes where I analyse and discuss in depth a novel. I will also analyse a film adaptation of it if I so desire to. In this episode (episode 18, season 2), I will be discussing both the book (the well-established censored version), loosely mentioning the uncensored version and the 2009 Doran Gray adaptation starring Ben Barnes. Lastly, (SPOILER) I wanted to say that the end of this book truly left me gasping (because I also foolishly believed it would end the curse, not kill him) and I would rate the novel an 8/10 despite its horrible pacing because it is worth it at the end and pacing after Chapter 11 is such a breath of fresh air because the plot thickens and the rest of book becomes more plot heavy and better paced in still a meaningful way. The novel scratched the hard-to-reach parts of my brain and blew my mind. The only other book that has come close was Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, but that book merely touched my brain. The film gets a 6/10 though. Dorian was also a lot more heartless in the film without his internal dialogue, which didn't help. Also, I tried to speak more clearly this time while recording the episode so let me know if you hear an improvement. Recorded Wednesday, 3rd August 2022.

Is that a peach in your pants or are you just excited for a new Cinema Very Gay to drop? This week we kick off a new ongoing episode series of our favorite queer books that were adapted for the movies. Lots can be lost in translation from page to screen, but as this week's movie shows, a strong adapted screenplay can add new depths and perspectives to a great story. Call Me By Your Name is directed by Luca Guadagnino and released in 2017. It was adapted for the screen by James Ivory from the novel of the same name, written by Andre Aciman. The film follows Elio and Oliver (played by Timothee Chalamet in an Oscar-nominated performance and by Armie Hammer, respectively) as they experience a brief but intense affair in a small Italian coastal town. Jake and Kevin both are enamored with the novel and with the movie, so we strongly encourage you to read and watch them immediately. Listen in as we ask ourselves, how is such an interior novel manifested so beautifully on screen? Is Chalamet's performance a good portrayal of book Elio? Why was there not, like, a LOT more nudity in this movie? This and more on Cinema Very Gay! After the beauty of CMBYN, it's hard to tear ourselves back to the reality of our mini-series, but we press forward! The fourth installment in our Eating Out Cinematic Universe discussion continues with the film Eating Out: Drama Camp. Somehow, this movie defies expectations and brings the comedy almost back to "sloppy seconds" levels, but we are still confused about...well, a lot. Why are all these adults at a drama camp? Why are we abandoning Tiffany? How many former reality TV contestants can this series get naked on screen? At least we had Drew Droege!

“I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is what I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now.” - C.S. Lewis. How often do you find yourself feeling a true sense of deep belonging? How many times do you find yourself seeking approval or trying to fit in with people or groups of people where you have denied who you really are, or what you really want? We have a foundational need to belong. To have deep meaningful relationships and experiences. To be in places that fill us with that sense of belonging and home. It is no wonder we are ill at ease and continually seeking and searching for fulfilment and contentment when we spend so much time physically, as well as in our minds with people and in places where we don't belong. The more we identify where and with whom we belong, the more we can start spending more time and energy there and less time in places and with people that contribute to a sense of disconnectedness and an endless striving. When we as fathers have a deep sense of belonging, we can create a home where the atmosphere is warm and loving and grants our kids a start in life fueled by a deep sense of belonging. We can help them follow their passions and true hearts' desires, and they can go through life without the constant need for the approval of others and to fit in with people and do things that do not feed their souls and add to their joy. “We belonged to each other, but had lived so far apart that we belonged to others now. Squatters, and only squatters, were the true claimants to our lives.” - Andre Aciman.

Mapy miast kreślą nie tylko kartografowie, ale także literaci. Paryż to miasto wielu literackich wcieleń - o swoich ulubionych opowie Grzegorz Dobiecki. A gdyby tak zapytać miasta o to kim jesteśmy? Taką próbę podjął profesor Rafał Matyja, autor książki "Miejski grunt", w której narratorami historii o Polsce są miasta. Czy książki Josepha Conrada były literackim zwiastunem globalizacji (a przecież kiedy je pisał, ten termin jeszcze nie istniał)? O fenomenie Conrada Dariusz Rosiak porozmawia z Mayą Jasanoff, autorką znakomitej książki "Joseph Conrad i narodziny globalnego świata". Young Tom Coderre had secrets. Painful ones. Growing up in a Catholic, political family in Rhode Island, with aspirations of elected office and a life in the spotlight, there seemed no room left for one major aspect of his life, a part of him that refused to sit quietly in the corner: his homosexuality. Balancing his outer world with his inner reality caused him a great deal of pain- a pain Tom managed through alcohol and other substances. While on the outside Tom's life looked ideal- he was a Rhode Island State Senator at 25, then the Chief of Staff for the Rhode Island Senate President, this denial of his true nature brought his career crashing down around him, leaving him with no home, no career, and not even a will to live. Through the world of 12 step-based recovery, Tom relaunched his life and today focuses both publicly and personally on helping others who are running from themselves and their problems with the aid of alcohol and drugs. By being willing to look inside himself and make peace with what he found, Tom opened the door to a more serene way of life and a life-long adventure of self-acceptance. Join Johnny G and Tom in this important discussion around how to look in the mirror- and really see. This love story follows Elio, a seventeen year-old student played by Timothée Chalamet and Oliver, an older man hired as his father’s assistant, played by Army Hammer in 1980’s Northern Italy. More specifically, Luca decided to set the film in Crema, an area he’s personally connected to.

In the week Rowan Atkinson returns to the big screen as the hapless spy in Johnny English Strikes Again, which sees him batter innocent bystanders and himself in a series of pratfalls, we look at the art of physical comedy. Jonathan Sayer of Mischief Theatre, classicist and stand-up Natalie Haynes and Dr Oliver Double of the University of Kent attempt to answer an eternal question: why is the unfortunate mishap hilarious - so long as someone else is falling off the ladder?Damien Hirst has just announced that he is scaling back business activities, including laying off 50 staff, to focus on making art. This news coincided with a recent report into the value of Hirst's work, which found that the artworks he sold at auction in 2008, had plummeted in value when resold. Art market journalist Georgina Adam explains what this all might mean for the artist. Andre Aciman, whose first novel Call Me By Your Name, was turned into an Oscar winning film, discusses his latest novel Enigma Variations, which charts the life and loves of one man from adolescence through adulthood. In the first in an occasional series looking at the way the way in which the arts can positively impact on people's mental well being, Stig Abell talks to Laura Freeman about her book The Reading Cure in which she describes “the chaos, misery and misrule of an anorexic's thinking”, and how she overcame it. Aged 24 she read Charles Dickens's Christmas Carol and describes how continuing to read about food in fiction gave her the inspiration to start enjoying food again and became the pathway to a fuller and richer life. This week on Unorthodox, we're wining and dining. Our Jewish guest is author Andre Aciman, whose 2007 novel Call Me By Your Name was adapted into the Oscar-nominated film starring Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet. He tells us about being forced to leave Egypt with his family as a teenager, getting recognized on the Upper West Side after the film premiered, and his absolute favorite coffeemaker. Our gentile of the week is journalist Kevin Begos, whose new book is Tasting the Past: The Science of Flavor and the Search for the Origins of Wine, a literary undertaking that began when he found an obscure wine from Bethlehem in a hotel room minibar. He tells us how local Israeli grapes got overshadowed when Edmond de Rothschild arrived in the 19th century and started making European wine in the Holy Land, and why we should ditch the Pinot Noirs and Cabernets and drink wine made from local Israeli grapes like jandali, hamdani, and dabouki instead.  This is the last week of our fundraising drive. "The show is perfect because one: it is British. There are two British co-hosts and they are just lovely people, because they are absolutely the most genuine. They just go around and look at beautiful homes and talk about the architecture. It's so simple and so perfect." Marc recommends Bravo's reality TV show Vanderpump Rules. "It is pop culture junk food. It's an awful, awful show. But you see yourself in it, in a strange way." He also recommends Scaachi Cole's essay on Buzzfeed “'Vanderpump Rules' Is The Worst Show On TV That You Should Be Watching." "It's super, super funny read, and it's just a super well written essay." Martha recommends Vince Staple's Go Fund Me project "Get Off My D*ck or Fund My Lifestyle," which was a response to critics saying that Vince Staples raps over low quality robot beats. "I love the song first of all and I love him. But it made me think about the larger cultural conversation about people's critiques about black art, and how a lot of people who write online, or talk about hip hop, don't get it." MJ recommends "I wore Adidas tracksuits for week like Armie Hammer," a first person story where Elle writer Estelle Tang, well, wore Adidas tracksuits for a week like Armie Hammer. "The story she wrote is phenomenal, it's so funny. It's just this really great hilarious article about someone doing this ridiculous stunt." Also mentioned on this podcast: our interview with Tomi Adeyemi, author of Children of Blood and Bone and Alim Kheraj's article for GQ "The Bright Future of Queer Literature Is the Young-Adult Novel." And be sure to check out MJ's review of Love, Simon here.Next week, we're reading A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle. We hope you'll join us. On this week's episode of the MashReads Podcast, we're continuing our lovely streak of books that happened to have been turned into feature films. We discuss the brilliance of Andre Aciman and his stunning 2007 novel, Call Me By Your Name.  The premise is simple: Elio, an intelligent 17 year-old, meets and falls for Oliver, the 24-year-old American graduate student staying with the family for six weeks in the summer. Elio and Oliver embark on a friendship and love story set in Italy of the 1980s. The two wrestle with their feelings, take about a million swims in a pool, and ultimately will have you feeling like a love-obsessed teen by proxy.  But because this book is much more than it's detailed descriptions of bodily fluids, inspired by Elio and Oliver's love, we also discussed all our favorite love stories including everything from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien to The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. Martha recommends checking out Spotify's newest podcast "Microphone Check" about all things hip-hop music—and things that fall under the grander ethos of hip-hop. It formerly had a home within NPR Music but the new reiteration of the show can be listened to here. Proma Khosla, who joined us for this episode, recommends the film Thoroughbreds, which is as she describes it, a "great movie for staring." It features the late Alton Yelchin and, according to Proma, the acting—and the sound—is incredible and striking. Watch the trailer here.  Peter read a book and thinks you should too. He recommends Alone by Christophe Chabouté, a graphic novel that is "kind of wonderful" about a lighthouse occupied by a deformed man and his imagination. "The art style is captivating and it's quiet itself," Peter says. You can check it out here.  MJ recommends reading Jo Ann Beard's 1996 New Yorker essay "The Fourth State of Matter." It chronicles the 1991 shootings at The University of Iowa and the death of her co-workers. "What I love about this story is it zigs when you expect it to zag," MJ says. You can read the story, with both zags and the zigs, here.

I was consumed by the story of 17-year-old Elio and 24-year-old Oliver who fall in love one summer in Italy in 1983. The film is beautiful, and I loved it. This episode was recorded immediately after I finished the film because I wanted to capture all my thoughts and feelings in that moment of afterglow and elation.
