Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Anonymous: Good morning! I was listening to your podcast this morning (#3283) and you mentioned you gave your dog sulforaphane to help extend his life when he had health issues. I want my dog to live forever (I'm only partially joking), so I wanted to know what dosage you used based on body weight and what other dog supplements you recommend. My dog is currently 8 1/2 heeler-aussie-shiba mix in great health (still has the energy of a puppy), where the only thing I notice with him is some benign fatty lipomas. Thanks! Anonymous: I hope you're having a wonderful day and thanks for all you do! My latest CT scan showed an enlarged liver with mild steatosis- I eat extremely healthy (and have been for a really long time, I'm only 28 and have only had about 3-4 drinks in the past 7 years)...I think this is stemming from getting mono a year ago (I've been feeling sick ever since and have had complications, even thoigh ive been following your viral protocol). Is this possible for mono to cause this? Also is it safe to continue doing functional medicine detoxes with an enlarged liver? Selma: Hi doctor Cabral, I love your podcast and am very grateful for all your amazing health advice. I hope you can help me with the following: Lack of sleep is a major trigger for me. After a late night, I often feel depressed, angry, and pessimistic. It's like a dark cloud hangs over me, and I can't shake the feeling that nothing will ever get better. Thankfully, this always improves after a good night's sleep. I'm curious if there are any strategies to manage these feelings when those unavoidable sleepless nights happen. Thanks so much and have an amazing day! Jackie: Hi doc. Question about testosterone. Been on it for 7 years, shot 4 yr , cream to present Originally for hot flashes, worked fabulously, got blood every six months. Question is I took it on the days I trained using cream. When I did it for five days, I started losing hair on head and losing on legs and underarms. Lowered dose hair stops falling on head and stops growing on legs My sgbh went up steady all the years. Doc saying no big deal. Can you shed light on why the hair falls out and legs grow and vice versa L. I really like the strength and less crying. I'm also on small estradiol and progesterone Going to do the big 5 but can't just yet. In school also at present ! I have gluten and dairy sens and diagnosed Lyme and ebvThank you and I'm very glad I found you and am healing Rebecca: I think I may have started perimenopause in the last 2 months. I have all of a sudden gained over 20 pounds in a month. I've never had a weight problem before and I have tried to take it off and I just can't. Also, it started the same time I had glycine supplements toxicity. Which I still think since I never detoxed it out of my system it could still be a problem with my weight from what I read. Also, still have the dizzy, vomiting, nausea, anxiety, weight, sex drive dropped, not hungry, and tremors from it too. I'm 51 and wasn't experimented on by the v***ine. Also, I've never done a parasite detox and think I should but never knew which one to use. Would love your thoughts. There are many ways that vitamin D function supports cancer prevention. Vitamin D triggers a cell to commit suicide if it's damaged. It helps regulate cell growth and has potent anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin D enhances almost every part of your immune system, enhances chemotherapy, and makes insulin more sensitive. It downgrades genes that cause cancer and supports the gut microbiome, which is 80% of your immune system. In a cancer cell, inflammation and a hypoxic, acidic environment block the absorption of vitamin D. Cancer also blocks the enzymes that allow you to convert inactive vitamin D to the active form. Cancer damages the liver and kidney, two significant sites of vitamin D metabolism. Around 80% of tumors produce a hormone similar to the parathyroid hormone, which extracts calcium from our bones. This is why hypercalcemia is a side effect of cancer. When the parathyroid hormone goes up, it lowers and inhibits vitamin D. Too much calcium in the blood also inhibits vitamin D. There are two systems of vitamin D: one that affects bone and calcium, and the other that supports the immune system. The bone system only requires a small amount of vitamin D every two weeks, while the other requires higher amounts daily. When dealing with cancer, consider taking around 50,000 IU of vitamin D with magnesium, vitamin K2, and zinc daily. The World Health Organization acknowledges that vitamin D has anticarcinogenic properties. Autoimmune conditions, osteoarthritis, tuberculosis, and HIV are also associated with vitamin D deficiency. Along with increasing vitamin D3, the following epigenetic factors can help with cancer prevention: 1. Magnesium 2. Omega-3 fatty acids 3. Resveratrol 4. Quercetin 5. Curcumin 6. Berberine 7. Intense exercise 8. Sulforaphane 9. Ginger 10. Fasting 11. Low-carb diet 12. Probiotics 13. Infrared light 14. Found My Fitness - Rhonda Patrick Key Takeaways Microplastics don't just vanish in our bodies, they accumulate; by understanding the sources, we can take preventive measures to avoid or minimize the use of harmful productsOnce microplastics enter our bodies, they can circulate in our bloodstream and deposit in various tissues and the bloodstream As our environmental plastic pollution increases, so does the accumulation in human tissueWhile the body does have mechanisms to clear toxins, we're in an almost constant cycle of consuming and clearing microplastics and associated chemicals (BPA, BPS, phthalates)Top sources of microplastic and chemical exposure: Water (both tap and bottled), air, synthetic clothing, food packaging, cookwareMicroplastics play an active role in damaging our organs, disrupting our hormones, impacting fertility, causing cancer, and possibly increasing the risk of neurodegenerative diseaseStrategies to reduce exposure to microplastics and associated chemicals: (1) Try to avoid packaged food, and especially heating food in plastic; (2) Consider setting up reverse osmosis filtration at home; (3) Reduce consumption of canned foods; (4) Use a mug or bring your own to a coffee shop; (5) Opt for cookware made of titanium, ceramic, cast iron; (6) Drink from glass bottles instead of plastic or cans; (7) Use a HEPA filter at home; (8) Try to wear clothing made of natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, linen, silkBe a savvy consumer: Many products labeled as BPA free still contain BPS (which is equally harmful) or phthalates (arguably more harmful)Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.org Sweating helps enhance microplastic-associated chemical excretion. In this podcast, we're going to talk about a natural remedy for gout. Gout medications work by inhibiting the xanthine oxidase enzyme that converts purine into uric acid. If you want to get rid of gout naturally, you need to eliminate things like alcohol and fructose from your diet. However, many people do this and still have gout! Is there a natural inhibitor for the xanthine oxidase enzyme that can work as an effective home remedy for gout? The answer is yes! Sulforaphane is a plant chemical or polyphenol that may be the perfect home remedy for gout. The best sources of sulforaphane are broccoli sprouts and radish sprouts. You can also find it in a capsule. Sulforaphane is one of the most bioavailable polyphenols with around 80 percent bioavailability. This means that it's highly absorbable. Sulforaphane can activate genes and enzymes that help to eliminate poisons and carcinogens from the body. It can activate over 100 defense genes! Sulforaphane helps restore the nephron in the kidneys, which allows the body to filter out toxins. Our body makes uric acid, which is filtered out through the kidneys. If they cannot filter out uric acid, gout can sometimes be caused by an issue at the kidney level. Sulforaphane helps upregulate antioxidants, reducing free radical damage and inflammation. It also increases microbial diversity, allowing microbes to dismantle and remove excess uric acid from the body. Episode #149 In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community: I've heard you've written an amazing book called, “The Cancer Code.” I haven't read it yet, but wanted to hear your thoughts on broccolini being an anti-cancer food. I understand it contains Sulforaphane, Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), Glucosinolates, Vitamin C, and fiber. Should I concentrate on cruciferous vegetables, like broccolini, or just work on getting a balanced diet? What are your thoughts? [02:14] I have a little confusion about the difference between taking metformin and injecting insulin. From what I've read in your books it's that insulin is going to make type 2 diabetes worse in the long run. I already know that that's not the answer to reverse type two diabetes and I'm not taking either one. Like insulin, will metformin also be detrimental to treat T2D or is there a difference between one and the other - and why, please? [05:27] What do they mean by 'immunoreactive insulin'? [12:06] Does the liver respond negatively to the ingestion of supplements? In other words, do the supplements cause any changes in my insulin? [14:52] I started TRE (beginning Jan this year) at about 135 pounds and am now doing 24-hour fasts with OMAD and 2MAD. I have completed a 42-hour fast and will probably try another one this week. I am eating whole foods. Avocados are my miracle!!! I do not snack between meals. My body is still releasing weight with what I am doing now and I feel I have another 5 pounds to go. How will I know when to stop shedding the weight? [18:13] Can you clarify the role of physical activity and exercise in weight loss? In The Obesity Code, you shared that a number of rigorous clinical trials demonstrate that exercise contributes minimally, if at all, to weight loss. However, zone 2 exercise is promoted for its'fat burnin' benefits. I plan to continue exercising for its health-promoting benefits but I would really like to hear your take on the extent to which it can assist with weight loss, and what exercise types you recommend for weight loss. [21:56] On non-fasting days, what is Dr. Fung's chosen style of eating? [29:46] Please note that you need to be a member of the TFM Community to submit questions to the Q&A webinars with Dr. Fung but you can submit questions to our regular Q&A episodes here: https://bit.ly/TFMPodcastQs Transcripts of all episodes are available at www.thefastingmethod.com on the Podcast page. The Real Truth About Health Free 17 Day Live Online Conference Podcast
In this podcast, we're going to talk about the concept of hormesis. Hormesis describes two things that might oppose each other. In terms of health, hormesis refers to a controlled dose of stress that makes positive changes for your body. With hormesis, you can adapt to various types of stress, including exercise, radiation, cold, heat, hypoxia, plant chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides. Sulforaphane found in broccoli sprouts and radish sprouts triggers the heat shock protein that allows the body to strengthen its detoxification enzymes. In this instance, the body is exposed to a small amount of poison that strengthens its ability to get rid of other poisons. The liver contains phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification enzymes that can take a poison and turn it into a harmless particle. Sulforaphane triggers this system. Exercise is one of the best examples of hormesis. Exercise induces microinflammation but then allows the body to get rid of inflammation. Fasting activates the body's mechanisms that counter starvation. It encourages our brain cells to grow, increases mitochondria, and regenerates the immune system. Health is often counterintuitive. For example, cutting fat won't help you lose fat, and sterilizing your environment won't protect you from getting sick. You can't develop a strong immune system without getting sick. Antibiotics destroy good bacteria in the body, which can lead to pathogen overgrowth. Antacids can lead to more heartburn because you need more acid to get rid of heartburn. When you don't expose yourself to the sun, you put yourself more at risk for certain types of cancers. Many people have been told that the sun causes cancer, but the sun gives us vitamin D. Having a deficiency in vitamin D can increase your risk for cancer. One last example is dieting. The more dieting you do in your lifetime, the more weight you will gain—especially if you're doing it incorrectly. In this weeks episode of "Pushing the Limits" I interview one of the world's leading phytochemical and nutrigenomics researchers who specializes in sulforaphane. Todays episode is all about improving cellular health, the core of health, and how activating the Nrf2 pathway through such phytonutrients like Sulforaphane (the precursors of which Glucoraphanin and Myrosinase) are found in Broccoli sprouts and other cruciferous veggies. You will learn: How sulforaphane upregulates the Nrf2 pathway How the Nrf2 pathway acts as a master switch, turning on over 250 genes and impacting thousands of enzymes in their function. How the Nrf2 pathway upregulates the cells own intelligent endogenous antioxidant systems Why just throwing a bunch of antioxidants into the body doesn't work in quenching oxidative stress The impact of upregulating Nrf2 in relation to the gut How it has system wide implications Why probiotics don't colonize the gut like you think they do How probiotics (or certain strains) can still be useful in immune modulation Why you should have a food first approach The traps to watch out for when buying a 'sulforaphane' supplement and why most of the ones on the market are a waste of your time and money How long you should take it, typical dosing regimens, combinations with other phytonutrients and supplements. How to use this information to optimize your health Why it pays to work with one of Dr Christines trained G.E.M.M protocol trained clinicians Why some people have a reaction when they start, and why that means you need it most and how to adjust the dosing while not giving up BIO Dr Christine Houghton has enjoyed a fulfilling and varied career in Nutritional Medicine spanning more than 30 years — and her influential work continues to stay at the forefront of this rapidly evolving profession. As a clinician, author and educator, she is dedicated to promoting a model of health care that closely reflects the diet and lifestyle choices Mother Nature would choose herself. An individual's unique biochemistry is a significant contributor to this model. Christine's intense appreciation of the power of food as therapy began in the 1970s, an era when there were very few supplements available. With few other choices, she soon discovered the real power of food as a potent clinical intervention tool; to this day, she adopts a 'food first' philosophy. A decade into practice, she established a thriving multi-disciplinary practice, the Centre for Integrated Medicine near Brisbane. There, she specialized in musculoskeletal conditions, glucose-regulating disorders including type 2 diabetes and other cardio metabolic conditions, digestive health and infant and child health, especially those associated with immune dysfunction. Passionate about the relationship between nutrients, phytochemicals and cellular defenses, Christine subsequently engaged in research at the University of Queensland, earning her a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry-Nutrigenomics. Christine is highly-regarded internationally as an expert in the clinical application of the broccoli-derived phytochemical, Sulforaphane in human health. As founding director of Cell-Logic, she has formulated a number of nutrigenomically-active supplements which are underpinned by her doctoral research. In addition to her scientific and other publications, Christine is the co-author of two evidence-based nutrigenomics courses: FOUNDATIONS IN NUTRIGENOMICS and ADVANCED TRANSLATIONAL NUTRIGENOMICS, both self-paced online courses for practicing clinicians and the only comprehensive courses of their kind available anywhere globally. A regular speaker at Australian and international conferences, Christine is an engaging speaker whose evidence-based presentations often challenge existing paradigms. Let's talk about sulforaphane. There are a lot of interesting health benefits of sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is a phytonutrient that has been studied extensively. You can get sulforaphane from many different plants, but the best source of sulforaphane is broccoli sprouts or broccoli microgreens. Broccoli sprouts or broccoli microgreens have 10 to 100 times more sulforaphane than broccoli. The majority of nutrients in plants, especially phytonutrients, are in the early stages of growth. Sprouts and microgreens also have much fewer anti-nutrients, which can irritate the gut. Sprouts and microgreens are incredibly nutritious and are great choices if you have a hard time consuming large amounts of vegetables. You can consume fewer of them to get a good amount of nutrients and phytonutrients. Potential benefits of microgreens and sprouts (sulforaphane): 1. May help prevent chronic disease 2. Has potent anti-inflammatory effects 3. May have anticancer effects 4. May help inhibit carcinogens 5. Has potent antimicrobial effects 6. Has powerful blood sugar effects 7. May be beneficial in preventing heart disease 8. Has been studied for autism 9. Has anti-aging effects 10. Helps support the brain
Unfortunately, our environment is very polluted, and we are bathed in toxins on a daily basis. Heavy metals are one type of these toxins. Today we're going to talk about the best strategy for detoxifying heavy metals. Heavy metals can accumulate in our tissues and can cross the blood-brain barrier. Heavy metal poisoning can affect different parts of the body, including the heart, digestive system, neurons, red blood cells, and certain proteins. Exposure to heavy metals also creates a lot of free radicals and oxidation and forces our antioxidants to work harder. Heavy metals even block our endogenous antioxidants. Our bodies have a very powerful detoxification system, but heavy metals block this important system. While you can avoid heavy metals to a certain degree, you really need to strengthen your detox enzymes: glutathione and SOD. These enzymes help break down chemicals and help prevent oxidation and free-radical damage. The best foods to support heavy metal detoxification: 1. Sulforaphane (broccoli sprouts or broccoli microgreens) 2. Cilantro 3. Allicin (garlic) 4. Curcumin (turmeric) 5. Cruciferous vegetables Two of the best ways to avoid heavy metals: 1. Consume organic foods 2. Get a water filter DATA: https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper... https://faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com...
Today I'm going to share an inexpensive and effective natural remedy for inflammation in the digestive tract. This remedy can be used for conditions such as: • Gastritis • Irritation in the esophagus • Ulcers • Hernias • Diverticulitis • Crohn's disease Antibiotics are a common treatment for digestive problems. But, antibiotics can have side effects. We're going to look at a natural alternative for intestinal inflammation that won't sterilize the body or diminish and change your microbiome. This remedy will actually support your relationship with your gut microbiome. The best natural remedy for inflammation in the digestive tract is cabbage juice. Depending on the severity of your inflammation, you may want to consume one cup to one quart or liter of cabbage juice a day. Just make sure it's fresh raw organic cabbage juice—it can be green or red. Cabbage, in general, seems to be the best food for people who deal with digestive issues. Cabbage has four interesting factors that can help support the digestive tract, including: 1. Vitamin U 2. Sulforaphane 3. Vitamin C 4. Today we're going to talk about the potential benefits of sulforaphane for autism. Sulforaphane is a natural chemical in cruciferous vegetables and other vegetables. Sulforaphane can be beneficial for other conditions as well, including: • H. pylori • HIV • Hepatitis C and B • SARS-CoV-2 People with autism have a low antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. One of the lowered antioxidants is glutathione. Lowered glutathione is also involved in conditions other than autism, including: • COPD • Alzheimer's • Parkinson's • Cancer • Autoimmune diseases • ADHD • Bipolar disorder • Schizophrenia • H. pylori • HIV A certain protein called Nrf2 is the master regulator of all of the antioxidants your body makes, including glutathione. This protein also activates detoxification enzymes, helps regulate T helper cells, and helps protect against oxidation and oxidative stress. Things that inhibit Nrf2: • High-sugar diets • Lack of sleep • Stress • Glyphosate • Alcohol • Smoking • Toxins • Medications • Infections • Gene alterations Things that trigger Nrf2: 1. Sulforaphane 2. Selenium, cysteine, glutamine, and tryptophan 3. NAC 4. Glutathione 5. Prolonged fasting 6. Cruciferous and sulfur vegetables 7. Alpha-lipoic acid 8. Vitamins A, C, D, E, and zinc 9. Milk thistle 10. Exercise 11. EGCG (green tea) 12. If you've never heard of sulforaphane, you aren't alone. But in the world of nutritional science, it is celebrated for its superpowers!Sulforaphane is a phytonutrient found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, and Brussel sprouts. By far the highest amount is found in broccoli sprouts - not the full grown vegetable. Sulforaphane has been extensively studied and found to have protective effects against many diseases, including multiple types of cancer, heart disease, and neurological conditions including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, stroke, and others. When it comes to the brain and nervous system, sulforaphane offers a handful of key benefits. It's an antioxidantIt's anti-inflammatoryIt promotes autophagyIt promotes mitochondrial functionIt increases neurogenesisIt promotes detoxificationAll of these functions of course have broad and systemic benefits as well, beyond the brain! When it comes to special phytonutrients like sulforaphane, we are big advocates of consuming them in whole food forms, i.e. broccoli sprouts, as opposed to encapsulated supplements. In the whole food, you receive the sulforaphane, but also tons of other phytonutrients as well as vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc. that aid in the synergistic effects of these sorts of healing compounds.Highlights from this episodeHow sulforaphane support cardiovascular functionHow sulforaphane has been shown to protect again neurological conditions and support overall brain functionThe detox-promoting properties of sulforaphaneSo many more random benefits of sulforaphane that have been studiedHow to increase your intake of sulforaphane in the diet with specific foods and cooking methodsLinks to some more good stuff- Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: https://www.alter.health/meal-guides- Cleanse with Us during the next Alter Health Cleanse: https://www.alter.health/cleanse- Work with us in the Thrive on Plants program: https://www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants

Can Eating Peppers Help You Live Longer Tulane University September 28, 2022 People who have a taste for chili peppers and other hot spicy foods may live longer, research suggests. A new study of more than 500,000 Chinese adults over seven years finds that participants who ate foods flavored with chili peppers every day reduced their risk of premature dying by 14 percent, as compared to people who ate chili peppers less than once a week. “Even among those who consumed spicy foods less frequently [one to two days a week], the beneficial effects could be observed,” says Lu Qi, professor of epidemiology at Tulane University. “Indeed, moderate increase of spicy foods would benefit.” While his study, published in the BMJ, doesn't address other foods, earlier research has indicated that horseradish, black pepper, garlic, and ginger may offer similar benefits.”There also is preliminary data from other studies showing such potential,” Qi says. Capsaicin in chili peppers may be what protects health, Qi says. It reduces risk of obesity, offers antibacterial properties, and helps protect against diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other conditions. Chili peppers also improve inflammation and reduce blood pressure and oxidative stress. Omega-3 may be helpful for attention, impulse control in adolescents University Pompeu Fabra (Spain), October 3 2022. Research findings reported in European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry revealed that higher blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) were respectively associated with better test scores for attention and impulsiveness among adolescent boys and girls compared with adolescents who had lower levels. “Polyunsaturated fatty acids are critical for brain development and function, and their deficiency may have long-term functional consequences” authors Ariadna Pinar-Marti and colleagues explained. “Despite the established importance of DHA in brain development, few studies have evaluated whether it plays a role in the attention performance of healthy adolescents,” commented study coordinator Jordi Júlvez, PhD. “In addition, the possible role of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), another omega-3 but of plant origin, has not been as extensively studied.” In comparison with adolescents whose DHA levels were among the lowest one-third of participants, those whose levels were among the top third showed better attention performance as indicated by scores for reaction time and conflict response. Higher ALA levels were associated with less impulsivity. “The role of ALA in attention control is still unclear, but this finding may be clinically relevant, as impulsivity is a feature of several psychiatric conditions, such as ADHD,” Dr Pinar-Martí noted. Weighted blankets found to increase melatonin Uppsala University (Sweden), October 3, 2022 A new study from Uppsala University shows that using a weighted blanket at bedtime increases melatonin in young adults. This hormone increases in response to darkness, and some evidence suggests that it promotes sleep. The findings are published in the Journal of Sleep Research. Previous research has shown that weighted blankets may ease insomnia in humans. Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden experimented with 26 young men and women to examine if the bedtime use of a weighted blanket increases the production of sleep-promoting and anti-stress hormones like melatonin and oxytocin. In addition, they investigated whether the bedtime use of a weighted blanket (12% of participants' body weight) reduced the activity of stress systems in the body. To this end, saliva was collected repeatedly from participants while they were covered with either a weighted or a light blanket to measure melatonin, oxytocin, cortisol, and the activity of the fight and flight sympathetic nervous system. “Using a weighted blanket increased melatonin concentrations in saliva by about 30%. However, no differences in oxytocin, cortisol, and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system were observed between the weighted and light blanket conditions,” says Elisa Meth, first author and Ph.D. student at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences at Uppsala University. “Our study may offer a mechanism explaining why weighted blankets may exert some therapeutic benefits, such as improved sleep. However, our findings rely on a small sample and investigated only the acute effects of a weighted blanket. Thus, larger trials are needed, including an investigation of whether the observed effects of a weighted blanket on melatonin are sustained over longer periods,” says senior author Christian Benedict, Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences at Uppsala University. Clinical Trial: Vegetable Extract may Treat Autism Better than Drugs Harvard Medical School, September 30, 2022 A recent clinical trial has shown that one vegetable extract may have astounding positive effects on those with autism – broccoli extract. Along with an extensive Autism Spectrum Disease research database at GMI, there is evidence suggesting that broccoli extract (along with avoiding heavy metals, minimizing glyphosate exposure, and eradicating the diet of gluten) shows promise in improving ASD. The active ingredient in broccoli that seems to help is called sulforaphane, a molecule found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. A groundbreaking study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA titled, “Sulforaphane treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD),” found that a broccoli sprout extract significantly improved the behavior of boys and men (those who most often suffer from autism). Sulforaphane was selected, in part, because its physiological effects are well characterized and ideal for those with ASD: “Dietary sulforaphane, of recognized low toxicity, was selected for its capacity to reverse abnormalities that have been associated with ASD, including oxidative stress and lower antioxidant capacity, depressed glutathione synthesis, reduced mitochondrial function and oxidative phosphorylation, increased lipid peroxidation, and neuroinflammmation.” The placebo-controlled, randomized pilot study of 44 males, ages 13-27, showed that after 18 weeks of treatment with a sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract, 46% had noticeable improvements in social interactions and 42% has improvements in verbal communication. More than half of all participants also showed a decrease in irritability, hyperactivity, and repetitive movements. Of note, once treatment with broccoli extract stopped, most of the behaviors associated with autism returned. The dosing schedule was determined by body weight: · 100 lbs or less: one capsule containing 50 µmol (232 mg) of sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract was given daily · 101–199 lbs, 100 µmol (two capsules of 232 mg each) of sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract was given daily · More than 200 lbs: 150 µmol (three capsules of 232 mg each) of sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract was given daily Social media use linked to developing depression regardless of personality University of Arkansas, October 3, 2022 Researchers in public policy and education recently found that young adults who use more social media are significantly more likely to develop depression within six months, regardless of personality type. Published in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports, the study, “Associations between social media use, personality structure, and development of depression,” was co-authored by Renae Merrill, a doctoral student in the Public Policy Program at the University of Arkansas. This new study found strong and linear associations of depression across all personality traits.” Among the study's findings was that people with high agreeableness were 49% less likely to become depressed than people with low agreeableness. Additionally, those with high neuroticism were twice as likely to develop depression than those with low neuroticism when using more than 300 minutes of social media per day. More importantly, for each personality trait, social media use was strongly associated with the development of depression. The sample of more than 1,000 U.S. adults between the ages of 18 to 30 was from data collected by Primack and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh. The authors suggest that problematic social comparison can enhance negative feelings of oneself and others, which could explain how risk of depression increases with increased social media use. Engaging primarily in negative content can also enhance these feelings. And lastly, engaging in more social media reduces opportunities for in-person interactions and activities outside of the home. “Findings from this study are important during a time of technology expansion and integration,” Merrill said. “Connecting to people virtually may increase the risk of miscommunication or misperception that leads to relationship difficulties and potential risk for developing mental health problems.” “People have innate emotional needs for social connection and understanding,” Merrill added. “For example, social media experiences can be improved by becoming more aware of our emotions and our connection with others in various life circumstances. This awareness helps improve relationship quality by simply reaching shared meaning and understanding through more effective communication and concern for others and ourselves. Despite our differences, we have the ability to create a culture of empathy and kindness.” Which grains you eat can impact your risk of getting heart disease earlier Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (Iran), October 3, 2022 In one of the first studies to examine the relationship between different types of grain intake and premature coronary artery disease in the Middle East, researchers found a higher intake of refined grain was associated with an increased risk of premature coronary artery disease in an Iranian population, while eating whole grains was associated with reduced risk. According to the researchers, previous epidemiological studies have reported an association between different types of grain intake with the risk of coronary artery disease. The current study evaluated the association between refined and whole grains consumption and risk of PCAD in an Iranian population. Premature coronary artery disease (PCAD) refers to atherosclerotic narrowing of coronary arteries in males under 55 years old or in females under 65 years old. It is often asymptomatic early in the course of the disease but may lead to chest pain (angina) and/or heart attack with progressive development of narrowing (stenosis) or plaque rupture of the arterial wall. Risk factors for PCAD include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Whole grains are defined as containing the entire grain, while refined grains have been milled—ground into flour or meal—to improve shelf life but they lose important nutrients in the process. The ACC/American Heart Association Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease recommends a diet that emphasizes the intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains and fish to decrease heart disease risk factors. The study recruited 2099 individuals with PCAD from hospitals with catheterization labs in different cities and ethnicities throughout Iran who underwent coronary angiography (women aged ≤ 70 and men ≤ 60). In total, 1,168 patients with normal coronary arteries were included in the control group, while 1,369 patients with CAD with obstruction equal or above 75% in at least a single coronary artery or ≥ 50% in the left main coronary artery made up the case group. After adjusting for confounders, a higher intake of refined grains was associated with an increased risk of PCAD, while whole grain intake was inversely related to reduced risk of PCAD.
Broccoli Reduces Your Risk of Four Major Diseases University of Illinois, June 23, 2022 It's one of the most advantageous veggies you can eat, and love it or hate it, broccoli offers an array of health benefits. University of Illinois researchers have identified candidate genes controlling the accumulation of phenolic compounds in broccoli. Consumption of phenolic compounds, including certain flavonoids, is associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease, type II diabetes, asthma, and cancer. Sulforaphane in broccoli can also help to prevent or slow the progress of one of the most common forms of arthritis. Scientists have also discovered that broccoli protects the skin against the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Many studies have shown that a diet rich in vegetables -- particularly brassica vegetables such as broccoli -- is linked to decreased risk of heart disease and stroke. The researchers crossed two broccoli lines and tested their progeny in terms of total phenolic content and their ability to neutralize oxygen radicals in cellular assays. They then used a genetic technique called quantitative trait locus analysis to search for the genes involved in generating phenolics in the most promising progeny. By identifying the genes involved in accumulating these compounds, the researchers are one step closer to breeding broccoli and related Brassica vegetables like kale and cabbage with mega-doses of phenolic compounds. The good news is that phenolic compounds are flavorless and stable, meaning the vegetables can be cooked without losing health-promoting qualities. Once these vegetables are consumed, the phenolic compounds are absorbed and targeted to certain areas of the body or concentrated in the liver. Flavonoids spread through the bloodstream, reducing inflammation through their antioxidant activity. "These are things we can't make ourselves, so we have to get them from our diets," Juvik says. "The compounds don't stick around forever, so we need to eat broccoli or some other Brassica vegetable every three or four days to lower the risk of cancers and other degenerative diseases." Environmental Health Trust, June 23, 2022 The two most important communicative mechanisms a newborn innately has to navigate his world are eye gaze and crying. From birth, newborns are constantly developing speech, language and communication skills with every response they command from their caregiver. As early as 5 days old, an infant can tailor his cries to reflect hunger, wetness, or discomfort as well as differentiate between mother and caregiver. Additionally, very early on newborns and infants develop prelinguistic skills: eye gaze (signaling a cue for communication) and joint attention – the ability of an infant to rest his or her gaze on a object at the same time the caregiver is looking at the same object. It is speculated that eye gaze between baby and mother is one of the most important prelinguistic skills to occur before verbal communication develops. However, excessive cell phone usage can work to hinder the communicative rhythm and bonding experience that new mothers and infants work to establish, especially within the first six months. Communicative cues can be easily missed and trying to decode differences in newborn cries (hunger vs wet diaper) can become very difficult. As it is so important for new mothers to pay attention to different cries, constant distraction from a cell phone can alter the way the other perceives the cry, thus making it more difficult to decode. Infants are so intuitive early on, that even the slightest delay in response to a coo or a cry can alter the way they perceive their world. Additionally, if a mother is perusing high-emotion content that is so pertinent in Facebook and social media, the overflow of emotion may inadequately color her response to the infant. Breastfeeding can also be affected by a constant need to search the web or pursue Facebook, taking away from a significant bonding period for mother and baby, according to Erin Odom. Physically, the mother may be present but mentally they are “somewhere else”. Many mothers use the cellphone to pass the time during the long nursing/feeding sessions of early infancy. However, infants are highly communicative during feeding, and texting and social media, when so engrossing, can distract a mother from the needs of the infant. Chronic cell phone usage such as texting and social media usage could absolutely hinder infant development as a result of missed cues on the part of the mother. The early months of a newborn who continuously has to wait for mother while looking at the cellphone before responding, to cry initiation for communication or other cues, the brain's connections will actually reorganize around this delay, later dampening the development of instinctual communication between mother and infant. Yoga And Meditation Could Potentially Reverse The Genetic Effects Of Stress Coventry University (UK), Antwerp University (Belgium), Radboud University (Netherlands), June 21, 2022 A review of multiple studies focusing on the effects of mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation has found that these efforts may have the potential to reverse genetic expressions of stress. As the analysis, published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, explains: While some MBIs, such as yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong, have a strong physical component, others like meditation and mindfulness, breath regulation techniques, and the relaxation response (RR) are mainly sedentary. Despite the variability in these techniques, they all seem to produce various psychological benefits on healthy and clinical populations, such as the reduction of perceived stress , the alleviation of depression, decreases in anxiety, or to help in coping with a chronic medical disease. However, it is less clear what are the mechanisms underpinning the self-reported benefits of MBIs. Noting that there is some speculation that “MBIs increase gray matter in the brain regions related to emotion regulation, learning, memory, self-referential processes, and perspective taking,” they acknowledged the evidence is not conclusive and set out to delve deeper into the genetic expressions of stress and how MBIs may affect them. The review analyzed 18 studies “that used gene expression analysis in research on meditation and related MBIs [mind-body interventions].” Ultimately, they found that “meditation and related MBIs [were associated with] downregulation of NF-κB-targeted genes, which can be understood as the reversal of the molecular signature of the effects of chronic stress.”h useful information unless the relationship between gene expression and psychological variables is directly explored.” Curcumin-piperine combo may support heart health for diabetics: Study Baqiyatallah University of Medical Science (Iran), June 25, 2022 A combination supplement containing curcuminoids plus piperine from black pepper may support heart health for diabetics by improving the levels and functionality of cholesterol, says a new study. The combination reduced total cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol levels, and improved levels of Lp(a) [Lipoprotein(a)], a structural component of LDL. “Although elevated Lp(a) has been considered as an important risk factor for premature atherosclerotic CVD for quite a long time independently of LDL-C and non-HDL-C levels, until very recently, the possibilities of influencing Lp(a) were extremely limited,” wrote scientists from Iran, Croatia and the USA in Complementary Therapies in Medicine . “Hence, this finding that curcuminoids as naturally occurring dietary supplements can decrease elevated Lp(a) in patients with [type 2 diabetes] is very important since such supplements are becoming more and more popular and attractive to the patients.” On the other hand, the curcumin-piperine combination significantly increased HDL levels by 1.56 mg/dL, compared to only 0.2 mg/dL in the placebo group. Parkinson's is partly an autoimmune disease, study finds Columbia University, June 21, 2022 Researchers have found direct evidence that autoimmunity—in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues—plays a role in Parkinson's disease, the neurodegenerative movement disorder. The findings raise the possibility that the death of neurons in Parkinson's could be prevented by therapies that dampen the immune response. The study, led by scientists at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, was published in Nature. "The idea that a malfunctioning immune system contributes to Parkinson's dates back almost 100 years," said study co-leader David Sulzer, PhD, professor of neurobiology (in psychiatry, neurology and pharmacology) at CUMC. "But until now, no one has been able to connect the dots. Our findings show that two fragments of alpha-synuclein, a protein that accumulates in the brain cells of people with Parkinson's, can activate the T cells involved in autoimmune attacks. "These findings, however, could provide a much-needed diagnostic test for Parkinson's disease, and could help us to identify individuals at risk or in the early stages of the disease." Scientists once thought that neurons were protected from autoimmune attacks. However, in a 2014 study, Dr. Sulzer's lab demonstrated that dopamine neurons (those affected by Parkinson's disease) are vulnerable because they have proteins on the cell surface that help the immune system recognize foreign substances. As a result, they concluded, T cells had the potential to mistake neurons damaged by Parkinson's disease for foreign invaders. The new study found that T cells can be tricked into thinking dopamine neurons are foreign by the buildup of damaged alpha-synuclein proteins, a key feature of Parkinson's disease. "In most cases of Parkinson's, dopamine neurons become filled with structures called Lewy bodies, which are primarily composed of a misfolded form of alpha-synuclein," said Dr. Sulzer. Vegetarian diets produce fewer greenhouse gases and increase longevity, say new studies Loma Linda Health University, June 25, 2022 Consuming a plant-based diet results in a more sustainable environment and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, while improving longevity, according to new research from Loma Linda University Health. Based on findings that identified food systems as a significant contributor to global warming, the study focuses on the dietary patterns of vegetarians, semi-vegetarians and non-vegetarians to quantify and compare greenhouse gas emissions, as well as assess total mortality. The mortality rate for non-vegetarians was almost 20 percent higher than that for vegetarians and semi-vegetarians. On top of lower mortality rates, switching from non-vegetarian diets to vegetarian diets or even semi-vegetarian diets also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The vegetarian diets resulted in almost a third less emissions compared to the non-vegetarian diets. Modifying the consumption of animal-based foods can therefore be a feasible and effective tool for climate change mitigation and public health improvements, the study concluded. "The takeaway message is that relatively small reductions in the consumption of animal products result in non-trivial environmental benefits and health benefits," said Sam Soret, Ph.D., MPH, associate dean at Loma Linda University School of Public Health and co-author of the studies. "The study analyzed more than 73,000 participants. The level of detail we have on food consumption and health outcomes at the individual level makes these findings unprecedented,” Soret said.

Oleic acid, a key to activating the brain's ‘fountain of youth' Baylor College of Medicine, March 22, 2022 Many people dread experiencing the cognitive and mood declines that often accompany reaching an advanced age, including memory disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and mood conditions like depression. While searching for new ways to prevent or treat these and other related conditions, a team at Baylor College of Medicine and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) at Texas Children's Hospital identified a missing piece of the puzzle of how memory and mood are sustained and regulated in the brain. Their study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals that oleic acid produced in the brain is an essential regulator of the process that enables learning and memory and supports proper mood regulation. The finding has paved the path to discovering potential new therapeutic strategies to counteract cognitive and mood decline in patients with neurological disorders. (NEXT) Chemical found in leafy greens shown to slow growth of COVID-19 and common cold viruses Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, March 23, 2022 Researchers at Johns Hopkins Children's Center report evidence from lab experiments that a chemical derived from a compound found abundantly in broccoli and other cruciferous plants may offer a potentially new and potent weapon against the viruses that cause COVID-19 and the common cold. In a study described March 18 in the journal Communications Biology, the scientists showed that sulforaphane, a plant-derived chemical, known as a phytochemical, already found to have anti-cancer effects, can inhibit the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, and another human coronavirus in cells and mice. Sulforaphane's natural precursor is particularly abundant in broccoli, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts. First identified as a "chemopreventive" compound by a team of Johns Hopkins scientists decades ago, natural sulforaphane is derived from common food sources, such as broccoli seeds, sprouts and mature plants, as well as infusions of sprouts or seeds for drinking. Previous studies, including those at Johns Hopkins Medicine, have shown sulforaphane to have cancer and infection-prevention properties by way of interfering with certain cellular processes. (NEXT) New clues about how a high-salt diet contributes to cardiometabolic diseases found deep in the brain Medical College of Georgia and Georgia State University, March 22, 2022 Deep in the brain a group of large neurons produce a hormone which prompts our bodies to hold onto more fluid and increase blood pressure. Scientists say these neurons play a critical role in enabling our bodies to maintain healthy homeostasis by using this skill set to efficiently eliminate the excessive salt we consume in an unhealthy meal. But scientists at the Medical College of Georgia and Georgia State University also say that the chronic high-salt diet most Americans consume can turn this system against us, resulting in hyperactivity of these neurons, continuing production of this hormone vasopressin, constriction of blood vessels and increasing our risk for common cardiometabolic diseases like high blood pressure and heart disease. They are finding that salt loading increases the firing of vasopressin-producing neurons, increases constriction of blood vessels and decreases local blood flow. More typically when neurons become active, blood flow to them increases, in a process called neurovascular coupling. This helps ensure working neurons have the adequate oxygen and nutrients needed to sustain increased activity. (NEXT) Vitamin D may keep low-grade prostate cancer from becoming aggressive University of South Carolina, March 22, 2022 In cases of low-grade prostate cancer, many urologists do not treat the disease, but instead do what's called "active surveillance. The cure—meaning surgery or radiation—is probably worse than the disease, so they wait a year and then do another biopsy to see where the patient stands. However, knowing that they have even low-grade prostate cancer can cause patients and their families excessive anxiety, which prompts some of the men to undergo an elective prostatectomy, despite the risk of complications such as infection, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. (NEXT) How sugar promotes inflammation University of Wurzburg (Germany), March 22, 2022 People who consume sugar and other carbohydrates in excess over a long period of time have an increased risk of developing an autoimmune disease. In affected patients, the immune system attacks the body's own tissue and the consequences are, for example, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, type 1 diabetes and chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. The underlying molecular mechanisms that promote autoimmune diseases are multilayered and complex. Now, scientists at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (JMU) have succeeded in deciphering new details of these processes. Their work support the notion that excessive consumption of glucose directly promotes the pathogenic functions of certain cells of the immune system and that, conversely, that a calorie-reduced diet can have a beneficial effect on immune diseases. In their study, the scientists focused on a group of cells of the immune system that have not been known for very long: T helper cells of type 17, also called Th17 lymphocytes, which play an important role in regulating (auto-) inflammatory processes.
