Stress has become a normal part of our lives. Join us for this conversation with Dr. Elissa Epel, author of the Stress Prescription, as she shares practical ways to navigate adversity to live a happier and healthier life. We can't avoid stress but we can embrace it and transform it.
Often I'll ask patients, "Do you believe you can get better?" This simple question, and subsequent answer, tells me so much about how they perceive their condition. This is more than "positive thinking." Instead, I'm referring to a central core belief about what's possible for them. Without belief, the mind-body connection feeds off the anxiety. So we have to learn how to reframe anxiety and stress so that we can believe healing is possible. In this episode, I explain the term "eustress," which is useful form of stress and how it can increase our belief in healing from GI and autoimmune conditions. BTW: I've added a new FREE offer at drskyler.net upon sign up that provides my safety-based protocol called "The 8 Mind-Body Methods to End Anxiety, GI and Autoimmune Conditions."

Is there such a thing as good stress? Our guest learns to welcome her stress by understanding how it can actually help her, plus tips and tricks to not feel too much of it. Episode summary: Like many of us, our guest Yana Leventon has dealt with a fair amount of stress in her life. But after living through the COVID-19 pandemic and grappling with the ongoing war in Ukraine (with relatives on both sides of the border) Yana's stress levels reached a new high. This week's episode is all about how we can reframe our relationship with stress. Yana spent one week trying a new practice each day. All 7 of the practices were aimed at managing different aspects of stress, from physically metabolizing her stress through exercise to visualization and breathing techniques. These exercises helped her regain a sense of clarity about what is truly not in her control, and agency over what is. She began to see stress as a normal and necessary part of life that can actually be beneficial in the right amount. Later, we hear from the psychologist who developed this stress management tool, Elissa Epel. She discusses the importance of developing a positive relationship with stress, and how we can use stress to feel a sense of empowerment. Practice: Day 1. Embrace Uncertainty: Releasing Embodied Stress Day 2. Let Go of What You Can't Control: Stress Inventory Day 3. Find Excitement in Challenges: Stress Shield Day 4. Metabolize Body Stress: Hormetic Stress Day 5. Immerse Yourself in Nature: Sensory Absorption Day 6. Experience Deep Rest: Breath for Restoration Day 7. Create Bliss Bookends: Start and End Full of Joy For more information on each of the daily practices, check out Elissa Epel's book, The Stress Prescription. Today's guests: Yana Leventon was a refugee in Austria and Italy before migrating to the United States from the former USSR when she was 10 years old. As an international speaker and author of "The Fresh Start Promise" and" Victim to Victorious", Edwige turns stress into success by clearing unwanted habits and behaviors, creating self-confidence and exuberant enjoyment of life, or as she calls it in French, "Joie de Vivre" Growing up in Cannes, France Edwige grew up being raised by her grandmother who was preoccupied with her well-being and stopped her by not allowing her to take chances. She interpreted that as being incapable and having a low level of confidence. Later, she joined her parents in New York City. In addition to this message and the stress of moving, she turned to emotional eating. As a result, she gained 30 lbs so during this time she moved to work on her internal journey. Through her exploration, she acquired many certifications including life coach and hypnotherapist. During this time, she lost weight. It was a result of finding a safe place within herself. Edwige walks us through what she has learned including her stress exercises which can be done driving or in a meeting. This exercise gives you the space to be neutral instead of going into a reactionary state We discuss both of her books: Transform Stress into Success and Victim to Victorious! We start by coming from a place of awareness. What do I think? What is my awareness? How am I talking to myself? Besides positive affirmations to ourselves, Edwige stresses the importance of using positive imagery as well when tackling your goal. It's time to shift from hurt to heart, should choose, can to can, and have to desire! You can then feel the softness of the words and the emotions it creates. At the end of the day, count your victory instead of your defeat! Our journey starts with self-awareness! Where am I? How do I feel? What's going on in my life? Take the time for self-reflection without judgment. 33-Year Old Jess Works to Transform Stress Eating & Food Guilt Jessica, a recently divorced 33-year old mother of three, is discovering how to find freedom with food. For her, that means not constantly tracking her food, controlling her cravings for sweets, or feeling guilty when she eats forbidden foods. Founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, Marc David explains to Jessica the evolutionary reasons behind her cravings and normalizes her desire to control what she eats. Listen to this enlightening and insightful episode now! Key Insights: Jessica, 33, speaks to Marc David about her challenges around eating and weight. She would ideally like to lose weight but admits that even when she weighed less, she wasn't satisfied with her appearance. She believes that if she could get rid of her cravings for sugar and junk food, she would find the weight and freedom around food she desires. As Marc explains, humans — like other living creatures — evolved to enjoy eating. We developed specialized taste buds including those that are stimulated by sweet foods as an evolutionary imperative. While it's part of our natural biology to crave sweets and other foods, societal conditioning causes us to feel guilty and self-punish. Part of the key to working with intense cravings is by bringing understanding to this natural biological wiring. In doing so, we're better able to recognize what drives these urges and to let go of the guilt we feel when we indulge. As we begin to normalize our cravings, we also want to bring consciousness to the table. As Marc coaches, consciousness allows us to check in with ourselves and have a deeper conversation about what we really want and need in a given moment. With his dual training in clinical nutrition and psychology, Marc David, M.A., has spent the last 40 years helping people around the world heal their relationship with food. As the founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, Marc is the author of the bestselling books, Nourishing Wisdom: A Mind Body Approach to Health & Well-Being, and The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight Loss. He reaches millions of people each year who are struggling with unwanted eating challenges and body image concerns through his speaking engagements, celebrated podcast series, and his internationally-acclaimed Mind Body Eating Coach Certification Training. Today we connect with Dr. Matt Dewar and dive into why social emotional learning is necessary to create an optimal learning environment. Matt highlights how breathwork can help teachers prompt regulation in their classrooms. Our brains are always learning and changing, due to neuroplasticity, and ensuring they are at a place learning can happen is virtually important. We also explore why it feels that schools and districts are always in problem solving mode. Dr. Dewar teaches educators how to Transform Stress into Strength™ through research-based mindfulness and emotional intelligence protocols. Motivated by his own personal struggle with anxiety as a young adult and informed by almost two decades of teaching mindfulness and emotional intelligence in schools, Matt's message is simple: Through increased awareness, knowledge, and skill, you have the ability to transform stress and adversity into emotional strength and resilience. He is also the author of The Mindful Breathing Workbook for Teens (2021) and Education and Well-Being: An Ontological Inquiry (2016). Intro song: Poet's Row, Young Bones
Join the popular lucid dreaming author Charlie Morley for our second interview with him, and discover why he is in such demand. Andrew and Charlie discuss his latest book, “Wake Up to Sleep: 5 Powerful Practices to Transform Stress & Trauma for Peaceful Sleep & Mindful Dreams.” The conversation begins with an extensive exploration of the importance of breath, and how it profoundly affects our lives – and our sleep. Charlie shares some practices for how to engage Coherent Breathing for optimal mental and physical health. He also shows us how to use breathing to work with insomnia, and to prepare for sleep. Charlie offers data from a number of studies on the importance of proper breathing, and the benefits in terms of sleep and dreams. The discussion then ties this topic into the inner yogas, and how the inner winds (lung, chi, prana) relate to outer respiration. Trauma is then explored, and how East meets West in working with the undigested experiences buried deep in our body-mind. Where do the samskaras fit in, and how about PTSD as “post-truth stress disorder” – a trauma that has its origins in the bardo. The conversation peppers in riffs on yoga nidra, nightmares, liminal dreaming, pranayama, vase breathing, and a host of very practical tips for enhanced sleep and dream. Charlie is a treasure trove of inspiration and information, and his passion is contagious.

ATTENTION: We interrupt these show notes to bring you this important announcement: You have a chance to train with me for free starting this Friday! This Friday, February 12th, we're starting the Get Clients Fast 5 Day Challenge. Five days of free, live training to get clients, fast! This IS 100% FREE OF CHARGE. Live training will be about one hour per day. This will be fun, interactive and ultimately profitable if you follow the steps. Click here to join the challenge and I'll see you live starting this Friday! And now...back to the show How can you reframe an overwhelming list of "have to's" into an exciting list of "get to's"? That's what we're talking about in this week's episode. Spiritual Foundations Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) In the past I would often wonder what to pray about. Well, it's clearly stated in the verses above: everything. I think these are the things we worry about and stress over even though they are beyond our control. If you can reach the point of release where you can let go of the things which you can do nothing about, I think you will find yourself much less stressed. Let God do the things that only God can do. Tip of the Week My tip this week is for my new book Permission to Prosper. It doesn't get officially released until February 16th, 2021, but you can preorder it by clicking here. Also, if you'd be kind enough to preorder, I'll make sure you get a free copy of the audiobook as soon as it's released! Feature Presentation So how does one transform stress and anxiety into peace and increase? This is another example of "change your words, change your world". It's about looking at "have to's" as "get to's". I recommend starting out by writing down your list of have-to's. The example from the podcast was, "I have to increase revenue for my company." That sounds stressful...it sounds heavy. Perhaps overwhelming. It's a have-to that I and probably every other business owner has had on their list at some point. Truthfully, I've had to deal with that one quite a few times in my career and one day it hit me: We have incredible resources now that we didn't have when I first addressed this "have to". Not so long ago, I didn't have social media platforms to potentially reach millions of new customers for free. This revelation changed my outlook on things. You and I have ever-increasing opportunities to grow our revenue...we don't just "have to", we "get to". Now, it's important to notice the "revelation" part of this story. I didn't simply pick a new word and *poof* everything changed. I had an epiphany that made "get to" a more accurate way of describing the process. You need to ask yourself what you need to do to make that true for you. I promise you this is a better, more rewarding, exciting and less stressful way of tackling your list. The holidays are sneaking up, and extreme emotions sneak up on us, too, this time of year. In this episode, I speak with my friend, author Deborah Richards, who offers insights for shining thru the holidays even if they bring up memories that can feel overwhelming. In her book, Shift & Shine, Deb details how she survived the death of her husband who committed suicide, and how her belief that they will be together again in the afterlife warms her heart. She also speaks of struggles with two of her children who went thru addiction and recovery. She is blessed this holiday that both daughters are living sober. Deb shares a five minute morning ritual that enables her to Shift & Shine throughout her day. You can find her book on Amazon. In this podcast we recommend the essential oil of Frankincense to enhance your listening experience. It's an earthy aroma that can inspire feelings of higher consciousness, and reflection. Dr. Reznick talks about her background and education, and what pushed her to develop her programs and write about her work. A primary goal is to help kids access their inner wisdom through their own imagination. She talks about some specific case studies and the progress she made. Continuing, Dr. Reznick provides further examples of brain/body meditation and imagination that transformed some of the kids she worked with. As Dr. Reznick states, fear is sometimes known, but sometimes we don't know where it is coming from, and the imagination work helps young people find comfort, to relax, and sleep better. Talking about stress, Dr. Reznick states that today we have more complications in life with technology, etc., and that it is all combining to potentially accelerate stress and anxiety. Dr. Reznick discusses texting and social media, and the emotions that are communicated, and not communicated in exchanges between people. Wrapping up, Dr. Reznick discusses her travels and the teaching she provides, giving people tools to help them find healthier paths, better solutions, and to promote joy and success through change and growth.

When bullying occurs, parents and schools take action and invoke discipline to end bullying. But what if there was a different path, a more effective way of handling things? What if we ask, “Why do kids bully?” then use the answer to discover and deal with the root cause? On this episode of the Mighty Parenting podcast we get a fresh perspective on preventing bullying. Hosts Judy Davis and Sandy Fowler interview Dr. Charlotte Reznick to understand why kids bully. They discuss what parents can do to work with schools and other parents to stop bullying as well as what to do if you see bullying behaviors in your own child. Parents often wonder why do kids bully, but today you learn to use the answer to protect and empower your child while creating a safer, kinder environment. In Real Talk, Sandy and Judy dig into the frustration and disappointment parents often feel during summer vacation. They'll discuss a simple method for creating a harmonious summer and preventing disappointment and attitude issues that can ruin your summer. A Favorite Quote from the Show: (Real Talk) The best way to nurture a relationship with your child as they get into their teen and adult years is to respect where they are different from you. "It's never too late to have a happy childhood" - Tom Robbins Learn a new way to think about your relationship with the voices in your head. How do you actually go about reprogramming your brain to change the patterns that cause things like stress, anxiety, depression, self-criticism, and addiction? In this episode, you will learn how to recognize the destructive voices and patterns in your head and lay down new patterns that support and nourish you. Host Lauren Fire shares the concept of re-parenting and taking back control over the way that you talk to yourself. This episode will show you how to start to reshape your patterns and reshape how you treat yourself. It’s time to finally change, to finally be the person you’ve always wanted to be. How do you get YOU to emerge? The you that you know you can be… Show Summary: I. Re-Parenting Yourself “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood” - Tom Robbins We all carry a parent with us in our heads. Most of our character, values, and personality comes from how we were parented as children. We adopted the model of our parents, in our heads. Once you realize this, you can get stuck in blame and anger at your parents, resenting them for how they treated you. But there is no way out of this. It doesn’t matter what happened to you back then. It already happened. The real issue to focus on is: Who is the parent in your head NOW? At some point it ceases to be your parent’s fault anymore, because you are doing this to yourself. You can stop doing it. You can re-shape the parent in your head. This podcast episode is about a process you can go through to, in essence, re-parent yourself. You get to create the parent in your head. You can re-shape it. That’s why it’s never too late to have a happy childhood. II. "It’s My Life!” - Taking Back Control The first step in re-parenting is to take back control. My daughter is two, and recently started saying “It’s my life!” whenever we try to convince her to brush her teeth or get into bed. That phrase has stuck in my head so much that I’ve actually started using it in the way I look at my life. Whenever I start to notice the self criticism or the parent that I don’t want controlling my head, I say to myself “It’s my life!” I don’t want to feel guilty about the clothes on my floor. I don’t want to feel mad at myself for not getting enough done. I want to enjoy my life. I want to enjoy this moment not worry about how my hair looks. It’s my life! See you are always more than that voice. You are not your critical voice. You have a critical voice. You are the one who observes it. You are the container where the voices live. So don’t let the voices control your day to day experience of your life. III. Playing Dolls with Your Subconscious - Establishing the New Parent Now that you have decided you want to take back control, you pick the new patterns that you want. What were you missing in your childhood? What are you doing differently from your parents? For me, I need more nurturing, support, unconditional love, compassion, emotional support. Once you decide what you are missing, what sorts of things would you need to say to yourself to invoke these feelings? What sorts of things would you have wanted your parents to say to you? What would help you now? For me, its: It’s ok. Trust me. You can trust me. Relax. I’m not going anywhere. NO matter what you do, I will pick you up, I will love you, I will support you. You’re ok. Just cry if you need to. It’s going to look better tomorrow. This is just sadness, you’ll be ok. I’m recreating in my head the safe place to land that I’ve always needed. I’m creating a place of ultimate compassion, that no matter what, I’ve got my back. No matter what I do or don’t do, I will still love myself. What kind of place do you want to create for yourself? Now pick scenarios that generally trigger you and cause emotional storms. Role-play in your head how you would like that parent voice to respond. Play dolls, in essence, with the voices in your head. It will feel weird at first, like these voices are not mature. They are not overly developed. So it’s like you’re dealing with a child in your head that you want to turn into a parent. So you have to be gentle with it. Practice this regularly and you will start to shift your entire life.
