How is sport impacted by the cost of living crisis? The answer depends on where you are in the marketplace. The small global elite of sports rights holders are doing just fine. Billions of dollars in media revenue chases must-see content, from the NFL in the US, Premier League in England, the IPL in India through to the major quadrennial extravaganzas such as Olympics and World Cups. Likewise, there are clubs and institutions in the lower reaches of the sporting pyramid for whom not much has changed and who cut their cloth according to the local demand for traditional revenue generators such as sponsorship, match day tickets and merchandise. It's the middle of the market where much of the pain is being felt. The situation was described in a recent essay by Ben Wells:'Economic crises tend to cause money to move in one of two ways: to quality or to price. Those in the middle, who are not able to compete on either front, are squeezed. In the last 12 months, not one major Olympic NGB was able to sign a primary sponsor, with the biggest deal of the year – British Cycling's tier-two sponsorship with Shell – bringing significant amounts of criticism. In parallel Müller ended its long-running main sponsorship of UK Athletics after seven years. UK Athletics is currently teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. This isn't a situation unique to athletics. Headlines in rugby, cricket and the second and third tiers of football report of similar tales of woe – the result of unsustainable commercial models. And all rights-holders in the Squeezed Middle need to be taking note. Economists predict the Cost-of-Living Crisis will last possibly until 2028, and those unsustainable models – trying to grow revenues in a business built around live events, which are limited by number and venue capacity and whose cost-bases are rising with rampant inflation – are the norm."Today's podcast is the first in a series created in collaboration with PTI Digital, the strategy and technology consultancy. Our guests are Ben Wells and Charlie Simpson.Ben is CEO of PTI Digital and previously held senior commercial roles at Chelsea FC, Reading FC and Bath Rugby.Charlie Simpson is a former rugby player turned chartered accountant who moved from EY to Scottish Rugby and leads on commercial strategy for the governing body.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. You need an anabolic environment” “Really with BFR, it is the first set is the key when you are doing low load continuous BFR and I think we should let go of the 30 reps, but you need to go for this feeling of fullness and maybe 1 rep short of technical fatigue” SHOWNOTES 1) Chris' updates on what he has been doing since our last episode (#30) including insights into the COVID State of Origin rugby league series 2) A quick introduction to skeleton racing 3) Going from just getting athletes strong to focusing on specific muscular contractions (e.g., eccentric, isometric and concentric) 4) Methods of eccentric and isometric contraction work 5) How to measure the intensity of isometric work and the simplest explanation for yielding/hold and overcoming/push isometrics 6) A case study with Beijing Winter Olympics silver medalist Jacqueline Naracott and the unique combination of isometrics, bands and blood flow restriction 7) How Chris has progressed his Blood Flow Restriction work with athletes, especially in rehab space with another case study featuring Cedric Dubler 8) The use of different rep ranges with blood flow restriction besides just high rep ranges 9) Letting go as strength & conditioning coaches and implementing things from other coaches 10) More resources, including practical implementations, on blood flow restriction PEOPLE MENTIONED Wayne Bennett Cedric Dubler Stephen Bird Jacqueline Naracott Adam Storey Ben Patrick Alex Natera Yuri Verkoshanksy Angus McIntyre

Interview with Lindsay Woodford Applied Sports Psychologist and Senior Lecturer at University West of England in Bristol talking about a winning mindset and what she likes to refer to as an 'effective mindset'. An ex-rower and now dressage competitor, Lindsay helps athletes mentally to prepare and perform. She has worked with Bath Rugby, England Rugby, GB Triathlon and GB BMX in the past and is currently working with a gymnast, ballroom dancers and athletes transitioning out of sport. Lindsay shares that an effective (winning) mindset is one that facilitates growth. She sees loving what you're doing as a key to life; helping both mental and physical health. Some of her work with the athletes focuses in on resilience and how others can develop this. Learning through failure and not fearing it; seeing failure as an opportunity to learn. In her line of work, failure is still an issue and a frustration. As part of developing an effective mindset, Lindsay seeks to understand; What's driving it? What the fear is? Then she looks to break it down into manageable results; or rungs on the ladder! In the final part of the interview Lindsay talks about setting goals that aren't just outcome related. She emphasises the importance of them being task focused; making sure you do a, b and c...and controlling the controllable's. Lindsay concludes by sharing that she's currently conducting research (as part of Phd) into over training.
