Back in 1994, Phil Gould’s Blues stunned Queensland by winning a decider at Lang Park - a feat unmatched for nearly two decades. Then came Game 3, 2024. It was brutal. Tryless for over an hour. Every inch hard-fought. Then, with the series in the balance, Bradman Best crashed through - pure power, pure Origin. Madge’s Blues had done it again. History repeated. A dream decider. On today's podcast, It's Only Sport host Martin Devlin delivers the most in-depth and rounded State of Origin game three preview going around! All eyes will be on Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium (traditionally known as Lang Park) tonight for the deciding game of the series. New South Wales looked the goods in game two in Melbourne, but history is against them - the Blues have only ever won two deciders against Queensland in Brisbane, the last being 19 years ago.First up, Devlin delivers a sermon previewing tonight's big game, hoping it's a close and captivating contest that - unlike the first two matches - isn't over by halftime. Then, AAP's Joel Gould and NRL.com's Brad Walter offer their thoughts on the match and which team has the edge. Devlin also revisits Monday's Rugby League Hour interview with the legend Andrew Johns, who discusses the hatred between Queensland and New South Wales and how difficult it is to play in a blue jumper in the sunshine state. As well as that, longtime radio host and sports broadcaster Miles Davis remembers the late Norm Hewitt and discusses Gareth Southgate stepping down as England football manager, and Mark 'Watto' Watson delves into criticism directed at the ACC for comments made during the second All Blacks-England test, and a couple of Kiwi female athletes achieving great things on the global sporting stage. All that and much more!

NSW Assistant Coach Matt King was part of a rare moment in history in 2005 when the Blues went up to Lang Park and beat the Maroons in a decider. He's hoping history will repeat itself as the team head up north for the decider on Wednesday. He spoke to Andrew Moore about the lessons they learned from game one, notably the words of Mike Tyson stood out for him after they were left a man down 7 minutes in: "you've got the best plan in the world until someone punches you in the face." They also discuss Madge Maguire's approach to coaching and the near-perfect first half performance by the Blues in Game Two. King is hopeful the team will be able to recreate their efforts in Game Three and cause an upset in the cauldron.

Allan Langer's playing legacy still looms large over the Broncos. The clubs Inaugural halfback in 1988 would become their first premiership captain in ‘92, a title they defended in ‘93. He'd go on to lead a team rated among the greatest club outfits ever assembled to the Super League premiership of ‘97, and in ‘98 they reigned supreme again in a reunited 20 team competition. It's a career so profound that Langer is immortalised in bronze with his own statue at Lang Park alongside fellow QLD champions, Lewis, Lockyer, Beetson and Meninga. In the shed this week, is Woody's father in law and all round legend of a bloke, Peter Wynn. Prior to running his successful sporting goods store, Peter was a big, hard running back rower in a legendary Eels team that dominated the 1980's. Coached by Jack Gibson featuring names like Sterling, Kenny, Price, Cronin and Grothe - Parramatta won 4 Grand Finals and became the last team to win 3 in a row. This episode, Peter takes us on an old school tour of one of the greatest era's in rugby league history. The 1980's was a time of shoulder charges and going the biff, mullets were in - shaved legs were out, beer the electrolyte of choice and downtime was filled with full time jobs rather than video games. Times may have changed, but listen in as Pete take us into the dressing sheds while Jack Gibson delivers one of his coaching sermons, ride the bus down Caxton St to take on the Maroons at Lang Park, gets an understanding of what it was like playing with and against some of the all time greats of the game and be prepared for a few 'left field guests' for our dinner party in the shed. The Go-Betweens: Brisbane, Australia – 1983. The city was in the midst of its adolescence, trying desperately to shake off the ‘big country town’ stigma and evolve into something resembling a modern city. The wink of Matilda’s eye may have evaporated, but government authorities were already getting ready to unleash the charming powers of Expo Oz the Platypus, a mascot that apparently heralded the emergence of a more adult Brisbane as the city sweltered towards the 1990s. Still, the music and art scene was locked in a perennial ‘pig city’ skirmish with the destructive forces of the Bjieke-Petersen government. The Saints had emerged and promptly moved abroad, while local radio 4ZZZ, still based at the University of Queensland, continue to agitate its way through the veins of the modern Brisbane alternative landscape. In late ‘83, The Dead Kennedys would play a blistering set before being strong armed towards the jailhouse by the local Queensland junta and David Bowie would end up feeding camping fans outside Lang Park with steak sandwiches ahead of his concert stopover in November of the same year. A month before the Kennedys legendary encounter with the Queensland police, local heroes The Go Betweens organised a show on the 3rd of July, 1983 at the heritage listed Baroona Hall in Caxton Street, Petrie Terrace testing out a few new tracks that would later feature on their third album, Spring Hill Fair. The band would play an early version of future Forster single “Man O Sand to Girl O Sea”, before later returning to London to re-record the song for the forthcoming record – something Forster later considered a mistake in his Go Betweens autobiography, Grant and I. Xero member and future Go Between, John Wilsteed was present at the show, circulating leaflets accusing the Go Betweens of betraying the Brisbane punk music scene. We’re very fortunate today to have located a live recording of that 1983 gig. This is the band in their transitional phase, moving on from nostalgia of Cattle and Cane towards the endearing beauty of Bachelor Kisses. Sit back, relax and enjoy the sound of the early Go Betweens. Recorded at the Baroona Hall on Caxton Street, Petrie Terrace on the 3rd of July, 1983. Recorded by Mark Louttit onto 1-inch 4-track tape and mastered to VHS in 1984. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 27th of August 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
