Lauren Weinberg is a proud boy mom, a loving dog mom,and currently the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Square, driving global marketing and communications strategy. She started her career by measuring media metrics, then made her way into b2b media, and eventually moved over to the consumer side of marketing strategy. She spent some time running her own consulting business, then landed at Square where she has been for the past 6 years. Previously, she held leadership roles at Yahoo!, MTV, and AOL. Lauren sees marketing at Square as the growth engine, and her team is responsible for the brand, the perceptions, and the acquisition of new customers. In this episode, Alan and Lauren discuss Square's business model, how it has dimensionalized and expanded over the years, the impact of data on Square's marketing efforts, and the incrementalism and principled risks that marketing organizations need to take in order to be competitive. Square started in 2009 with the purpose of enabling any individual or business to participate and thrive in the economy with the little white card reader. Now, 14 years later, they have a full ecosystem of software and hardware that allows companies of all sizes to run their entire operation through Square. With such a diverse audience, Square thrives on implementing an audience-first marketing perspective. By focusing on key audiences and tailoring messaging for each, Square is able to drive discoverability and cultivate relationships with a variety of different demographics and businesses in all sectors and scales. Square is very data-driven and informed, so everything they do and plans for is tied back to the overall strategy, metrics of success, and business results. Their category is competitive, so they have to be responsive and adapt quickly while also being smart with their risk-taking. Lauren tells us taking small incremental risks gives them space to break through and try new things. Thankfully, experimenting and learning from failures is in the DNA of Square, and that serves them well in being innovative. In this episode, you'll learn:The benefits and challenges of implementing “audience first” marketingHow incrementalism, principled risks, and a culture of learning drive innovation at SquareLaurens take on marketing cuts in light of an oncoming recessionKey Highlights: [01:30] A cross-country pandemic move[05:00] Where Lauren got her start and how she ended up at Square[09:00] What is Square today[10:30] How does Lauren think about marketing role in driving growth [12:00] What has Lauren learned over the past 6 years at Square?[13:20] How is Lauren using data to inform her marketing efforts?[15:40] Data in understanding long-term investments [16:48] Marketing mix modleing [19:05] Educating a variety of audiences[21:40] Audience first marketing [24:30] Marketing cuts in light of an oncoming recession [27:50] Benefits of constant communication and transparent decision making [30:00] The impact of her first job and being a boy mom[32:30] Advocate for yourself and trust your intuition [34:30] Generative Ai and unlocking TikTok [36:00] Trends and subcultures to watch [38:45] Returning to a beginners mindset Thank you to our sponsor:PartnerHero: to waive set-up fees, go to https://www.partnerhero.com/marketingtoday and mention “Marketing Today” during onboarding! Jackie and Lauren worked together at Yahoo and later at Square, where they spent a lot of time talking to small business owners. During the pandemic, they started discussing how during an economic downturn, a lot of people generally start their own businesses, and wouldn't it be great if they could package together what they had learned working with small businesses. This idea was what led to the authors researching and writing Self-Made Boss. But both Jackie and Lauren had significant backgrounds in small business long before they conceived of writing this book. Jackie relates in this episode how when she was growing up, her parents and grandparents owned small businesses and she started her own small businesses in high school and then college. After college, Jackie transitioned to Wall Street and spent time creating financial products and working on mergers and acquisitions. She then moved into technology, first at Yahoo and then at Square, and then she left to start her own business once again. While at Square she was involved in the lending and banking aspect. One of the most emotional parts of the journey for a small business owner is when they receive credit or capital to fund their business. Those stories that Jackie and Lauren heard working with small business owners inspired them to write Self-Made Boss.  The ideal reader for the book is anyone who is thinking about or currently running a small business. The book is designed as part starter-kit, part encyclopedia. Each chapter covers a specific area of running a business that the entrepreneur may need to learn or brush up on, such as Creating a Business Plan, Legal Matters, Brand Building and Marketing, Hiring and HR, and Growth and Scale. But each chapter is also sprinkled with real-life stories of fascinating entrepreneurs whose tales will resonate with small business owners and inspire them to continue on their journey.  The authors know from experience that it can feel lonely running your own business and Self-Made Boss aims to show small business owners that they are not alone and that many of the challenges they face are shared by other entrepreneurs. Through the book, they package together insights and lessons on how to overcome these challenges. Listen to Jackie and Lauren in this entertaining and fascinating discussion and you will undoubtedly want to read Self-Made Boss.  Resources Shared: Self-Made Boss by Jackie Reses and Lauren WeinbergSelfMadeBoss.comThryv

Starting and growing a small business is a challenge. If you're finding it isn't, you might not be pushing hard enough. Scaling doesn't happen overnight either: it's a process — a long one. In this episode, Jackie Reses and Lauren Weinberg share their business journeys to becoming the Self-Made Bosses they are today. We discuss everything from the mental side of starting a company to the practical aspects of a business plan. Sometimes you know what you want from the beginning, and sometimes opportunities bring you to unexpected places. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Your company's working environment will depend on what your employees want and what your company does. Starting a business is a challenge: are you ready with both mental and physical assets? SMEs need to pay attention to many things, but cash flow is typically the most critical. [07:47] Jackie and Lauren's Journeys Jackie grew up with the grittiness of entrepreneurship, eventually starting her own business at 16. She retained this mindset all her life. Combined with her desire for independence, an amazing education, and good experience at the start of her career, she had a solid mental foundation for work. Lauren's career path took her through multiple jobs. She took opportunities wherever she could, leading to a happy, accidental journey through a broad range of things. [17:04] The Philosophical and the Practical Starting a business alone is a highly personal journey — it's almost all about you and your resources. It has two aspects: a philosophical side and a practical one. The philosophical asks: “Are you ready?” Conversely, the practical requires creating and breaking down your plan. You have to know what you're going to do before you do it. Starting a business will always be a stressful challenge, so it's critical to be mindful: Do you need a break? Do you need to delegate? Stress can cause mistakes, so look for those signals. [29:47] The Workplace Environment The last two years have changed how people work and spend their time. People have different priorities now, making staffing a challenge. While there's a lot to be gained by working in person, not everyone wants to go to the office anymore. Ultimately, it depends on the business and the people. [34:25] The Growth Journey There are several factors to consider when you want to scale as a business, such as cash flow, product lines, and staffing. Cash flow is typically the most significant issue for small businesses. It's essential to consider how to acquire inventory capital or invest, but that's not always readily available. Happy Friday eve Brand Nerds! Are the ladies in in the house? Without a doubt (s/o Frank White and Junior Mafia). Today you're being blessed with ‘applied' wisdom. Said another way, Lauren Weinberg, Chief Marketing Officer of Square, has something to say (s/o 3 stacks). Let's start with this little ditty, the best marketing tells a strong story supported by data. But then Lauren flips it with this jewel, there is a time to turn down the data and turn up your INSTINCTS. Allow that to marinate on your cranium for second. So here's a question for you to ponder. Do you know WHEN to turn down the data and turn up your instincts? Lauren does, and so should you. As you well know, in current day marketing we have an embarrassment of INFORMATION riches, and dearth of culturally relevant, actionable INSIGHTS. As you grope for the weekend open your ears to the wisdom of Lauren Weinberg! #laurenweinberg #square #jackdorsey #marketing #branding #advertising #socialmedia #media #brandsbeatsbytes #cmo
