Yes, and on today's episode, I interview my co-contributors in this new venture, the "3 Men And A SCI" Pod. Below are very brief bios of both amazingly accomplished gentlemen. I look forward to working with them on this exciting venture, and hope you'll join us for the ride! Barry Munro is a quadriplegic who sustained a spinal cord injury in 1987, and has been an active advocate in SCI research for over 37 years. He is the chief Development Officer of the Canadian/American Spinal Research Organization, which was established in 1984 to fund targeted research to maximize functional recovery and cure paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Barry also currently holds the position of Treasurer for the North American Spinal Cord Injury Consortium, a community led organization which has the mission to bring about unified achievements in research, care, cure, and policy by supporting collaborative efforts across the spinal cord injury community. At the age of 19, Alexander “Sasha” Rabchevsky was a strong safety on the Hampden-Sydney College, VA football team when a motorcycle accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. Sasha transformed that turn of events into a career searching for ways to repair spinal cord damage and improve the lives of those living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Since 2002, Sasha has been a faculty member of the Department of Physiology at the University of Kentucky and core member in the Spinal Cord & Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC). We recorded this live at Discovery ID camp on the campus of Christopher Newport University. This boy's camp was attended by over 100 student athletes and coaches from 6 different colleges. We took the opportunity to do a question and answer session with the participants and coaches from each of the schools. Fielding questions from the audience was Chris Norris of William and Mary, Justin ‘Cheese' Chezem of Christopher Newport University, Tommy DiNuzzo of Hampden-Sydney College, Teig Lesko of UNC-Wilmington, Jon Freeman of Washington & Lee, and Jason Kilby of the University of Mary Washington. There is a ton of great information in this episode and a couple questions are answered that I received previously from listeners. Jerrod Nolan is a leader. On the court, Nolan was an integral piece in rebuilding a storied DIII basketball program. Teammates looked to him as he led by example, gave pre-game speeches, and locked up on the defensive end. Rodd shines even brighter beyond the court. He is the President of the Xi Zeta Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which is the oldest and most prestigious historically Black fraternity in the United States. Rodd also leads on campus as President of the Minority Student Union at Hampden-Sydney College. Furthermore, Nolan was a member of the Academic All-ODAC team; a testament to his excellence on and off the court. Basketball taught Jerrod Nolan a lot, and he reflects on what he has learned from the game on this special and authentic episode of the Shoot Hoops Podcast. Hint: Life is bigger than basketball.

Today on the show, Julien speaks with Maurice Jones, the CEO of the non-profit OneTen. OneTen is a coalition of leading chief executives and their companies who are coming together to upskill, hire, and promote one million Black Americans over the next 10 years who do not yet have a four-year degree into family-sustaining jobs with opportunities for advancement. Prior to joining OneTen, Maurice was the President and CEO of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), one of the country's largest organizations supporting projects to revitalize communities and catalyze economic opportunity for residents. He previously served as Secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia where his primary job was to leverage Virginia's assets to solidify its position as the preeminent place to live, work and conduct business. Maurice also served as Deputy Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from April 2012 through January 2014. As the second most senior official at HUD, Maurice managed the Department's day-to-day operations, the annual operating budget of $40 billion and the agency's 8,900 employees. Maurice received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Hampden-Sydney College and attended Oxford University in England on a Rhodes Scholarship, where he received a Master of Philosophy in International Relations. He later received a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. Today we discuss: With 11 million job openings, we discuss why it's critical that we shift our national standard for job qualification from primarily academic credentials or experience, to a focus on measurable and tangible skills. Addressing inherited poverty by connecting Black talent to family-sustaining wages that offer entry to the middle class and that are accessible (don't require a 4-year degree), offer advancement opportunities, and are secure over the long term (unlikely to be automated). Why building an ecosystem that connects employers and skilled workers will drive our national economic potential and benefit all of us. Three critical actions for inclusive leaders to take that support “OneTeners”—build a skills-first culture, mentor and sponsor new hires, and create a culture of belonging where authenticity is valued.
