To commemorate the milestone, for the first time ever, three classes of Viking ships—a river ship, an ocean ship and the company's newest expedition vessel, the Viking Polaris—met in Amsterdam and sailed in a special convoy to IJmuiden, Netherlands. Participating in the convoy with the Viking Polaris were the Viking Longship, the Viking Mani, and the ocean vessel, the Viking Mars.During the Amsterdam event, Viking also named the Viking Polaris and her identical sister ship, the Viking Octantis®, which is currently sailing her inaugural season in the Great Lakes. Both ships will spend the Austral summer in Antarctica, before travelling north to the Great Lakes for a series of voyages during spring and summer.Viking's 25th anniversary celebration in Amsterdam is the most recent event during a milestone year in which the company has also welcomed to its fleet eight new Viking Longships on the rivers of Europe and new purpose-built vessels on the Mekong, Nile and Mississippi rivers. By the end of 2022, two new, identical ocean ships will have also joined Viking's fleet. Earlier this year, Viking was named the #1 Ocean Line and #1 River Line in Travel + Leisure's 2022 “World's Best” Awards, in which the company became the first cruise line ever to top both categories in the same year. Viking is also rated #1 for both rivers and oceans by Condé Nast Traveler, making it the first cruise line to ever simultaneously earn #1 in its categories from both publications. Additionally, Viking has published a new video about the company's history and some of the key partners who have contributed to its success, which was shared on board all Viking ships today as part of the 25th anniversary celebration.Paul Gauguin Cruises opens sales for 2024A unique opportunity awaits to explore the paradise isles and sunny shores of Polynesia as Paul Gauguin Cruises launches sales for its 2024 small-ship cruises with 33 sailings to 7 destinations, including 2 new itineraries crafted by the company's destination experts. The various itineraries for 2024 centre on water sports including swimming, scuba driving, kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkelling, discovering local traditions and visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites. Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, México y Paraguay. People often ask me what it was like as a “NASA” insider. On this episode of Casual Space, one of the very best of the best, Michael Ciannilli joins me to share highlights and lessons learned from more than 25 years at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Michael “Mike” Ciannilli is NASA's manager of the Apollo, Challenger, Columbia Lessons Learned Program, where he helps innovatively and effectively share NASA's lessons of the past to help ensure future success. Inspired by Mike and his work? Check out these videos from NASA EDGE, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvOHNIbVBRI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtowgLH-HyA And read more about Mike here: As manager of this agency level program, Ciannilli oversees the Columbia Research and Preservation Office, which preserves all Columbia artifacts, as well as the loan program, which loans out Columbia artifacts for research and academic purposes. In addition, this role involves giving lessons learned tours for NASA engineers, scientists, interns, executives, commercial partners and others. During these tours, he uses the stories of Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia to share what has been learned from these past mishaps to prevent reoccurrence in future applications. Ciannilli also does lessons learned events at Kennedy Space Center where he works to bring these past experiences and the emotions behind the accidents alive through multimedia and storytelling; these events will be expanding across the agency. In addition to his main activities supporting the agency, Ciannilli also collaborates with outside media organizations like National Geographic to share these lessons learned with a wider audience. Prior to his current role, Ciannilli was the lead of the Columbia Research and Preservation Office, a position that is now encompassed in his new role. He also led the creation and development of the Forever Remembered project for Columbia and Challenger at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Previously, he served nine years as NASA Test Director for the Space Shuttle Program at Kennedy, responsible for processing oversight of the space shuttle orbiters and ground support systems including launch and landing facilities. In addition, this responsibility included leading the launch team through launch countdown activities. He also was the Landing Recovery Director during that time, responsible for leading contingency operations during launch countdown and landing activities, including flight crew recovery. In 2003, during the Columbia accident recovery, Ciannilli flew extensively onboard helicopters across Texas supporting air search operations and Columbia artifact recovery. Before joining NASA in 2005, Ciannilli was a contractor for the United Space Alliance where he spent eight years as a Test Project Engineer, leading the testing and engineering integration during processing of the shuttles and launch operations, and before that he was the lead of the Launch Countdown Simulation Team, which developed simulations to train the launch team. The Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is an amazingly striking way the built environment can contribute to the Guest experience at historical and informative spaces. The entire Guest experience from beginning to end is designed to elicit emotions that contribute to the overall understanding and appreciation visitors have when attending the complex. Today we talk about how physical storytelling can enhance and contribute to an experience as we look at the final home for Space Shuttle Atlantis.
For most of us reading this, it's been a minute since we've attended middle school. Naturally, you’d imagine the textbooks currently in use have been updated over the years. This is not always the case. In today’s episode of the EdTech podcast, Jim Christensen, executive director of the ShareSpace Foundation, explained what's changed and what hasn’t inside America’s elementary schools. One of Christensen's indelible memories during his tenure as a middle school teacher was teaching language arts with the same textbook he used as a child. The experience helped him realize that he would succeed as an educator by teaching children to think, not to test. And young students can mature their thinking skills through collaboration. “Kids want to do things together, they want to work together," he said. While some of the educational materials may still be the same, Christensen reminded listeners that many of today’s students now have computers and even robots in the classroom. He described a hopeful future of integrating robots with augmented reality technology, like the innovative technology provided by Boxlight, to allow students to learn differently. And in his opinion, robots can be used beyond STEM classes. “I’d like to get [robots] across the curriculum," Christensen said. Christensen, the former director of education at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, sees robots as also being crucial to future missions to Mars. He believes our species will rely on machines for recon, to build bases before humans arrive, and to operate them as well. He's spoken with and continues to speak to thousands of children each year and said that they’re endlessly curious about life on other planets. “I challenge kids to come up with a tour they’d give on Mars," Christensen said. The mental exercise activates their imagination, teaches them about the Red Planet, how to make presentations, how to make maps, and above all, it teaches them how to think.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis Experience, which opened at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_Space_Center_Visitor_Complex) in Cape Canaveral, Florida in 2013 brings visitors “nose to nose” with one of the three remaining Space Shuttle orbiters. The team that built it used principles of themed attraction design to introduce visitors to the orbiter and the rest of the exhibits. Atlantis is introduced linearly and deliberately: visitors see two movies about the shuttle before the actual orbiter is dramatically revealed behind a screen. The orbiter’s grand entrance was designed by PGAV Destinations (https://pgavdestinations.com), whose portfolio includes theme parks and museums. Diane Lochner, a vice president of the company who was part of the architectural design team, says that without that carefully-planned preparation, visitors wouldn’t have the same powerful emotional reaction to the Shuttle. In this episode, Lochner is joined by Tom Owen, another vice president at PGAV Destinations to talk about the visitor experience considerations of the Shuttle Atlantis Experience, whether attractions engineered to create a specific emotional response in visitors are appropriate for museum contexts, and the broader trend of museums taking cues from theme park design. Former astronaut, Jon McBride, has lived a remarkable life. From the time he was a young boy he had dreams of going to space. He later became an astronaut on the maiden voyage of The Columbia Space Shuttle. Saying that Jon has several years of military, NASA and business experience hardly covers what he has accomplished throughout his life. Along with being an aeronautical engineer, fighter pilot, aviator, naval officer and astronaut, Jon is also a kind, wise man. He's likable and down-to-earth (despite going to space). In this episode, Jon talks about his mission on The Columbia Space Shuttle. His crew observed the earth from space and made important observations, including the examination of spiral eddies in the ocean. Jon also explains the benefits of space exploration for society. Tens of thousands of patented technologies come from, and continue to be developed from, NASA research. These technologies are used every day by you and me. Many of these advancements are common place now, but were major breakthroughs at the time. An example? How about GPS. It makes sense that Jon would be an advocate for education and he encourages all “youngsters”, as he would say, to study hard. He believes education is the road to success. Throughout this episode, Jon gives many tips on how to achieve your dreams. Finally, he answers questions from viewers on just about everything you can imagine. What going to the bathroom in space is like, aliens, sleeping in space, and many others. Take time to listen to a man who has left a tremendous legacy behind him. His wisdom and experience will blow you away. Key Takeaways: [:35] Astronaut, Jon McBride is introduced. His list of accomplishment and accolades is impressive. [4:45] Jon talks about the highlights of his life and career. [7:47] Jon's mission on the Space Shuttle was an Earth Observation Mission.
