In this episode, Bessie sits down with Axel and Max Stürken, the Co-CEOs of Leuchtturm1917, a premium stationery brand that has stood the test of time. As the company approaches its 108th anniversary, the brothers discuss their journey of transforming a traditional family-run business into an industry leader in high-quality notebooks. From stamp collecting albums to coin collections and finally to the globally recognized Leuchtturm notebooks, Axel and Max share how their company has adapted, innovated, and thrived in an increasingly digital world. The conversation explores the impact of digitalization, why handwriting remains relevant, how the brand's annual color themes came to life, and why they have resisted going public despite numerous acquisition offers. They emphasize a core principle that has guided their success: focusing on customer needs and refining the details. Whether it's introducing numbered pages, custom indexes, new color palettes, or even waterproof notebooks, Leuchtturm1917 continuously evolves by listening to its customers and responding with thoughtful product innovations.Whether you're a stationery lover, entrepreneur, or creative thinker, this episode offers deep insights into heritage branding, business resilience, and the enduring magic of writing by hand—because writing is thinking on paper.Quotes That Inspire: “Writing is thinking on paper.” “The more digital our world becomes, the more people turn back to real, tangible experiences.” “We don't create disposable products—our notebooks are made to last, just like the ideas people put inside them.” “We love being independent—keeping the company family-run allows us to focus on quality, not quarterly reports.” “People don't just buy a notebook; they buy a tool that helps them reflect, create, and remember.”Bessie

Welcome back to Glow Up Goals Week on Bri Books! Today we're doing a deep dive into the world of bullet journaling: What it is, what it solves, and how to get started. I'll be sharing the steps you want to follow in order to turn any notebook into a bullet journal, and how to optimize your life using bullet journal strategies like daily and weekly logs.   What is Bullet Journaling? What's the Difference Between a Bullet Journal and a Regular Notebook? A bullet journal, in essence, is a notebook with bulleted on-page dots and an accompanying system of organizing your world. Your bullet journal index, weekly spread, and daily logs are the foundations of a successful bullet journaling strategy.  Your bullet journal weekly spread is where you map out your week ahead, and supplement with categories you want to focus on. Often, when you search bullet journaling on YouTube and Instagram, you're met with highly-designed, washi-tape wrapped notebooks. What's important to remember is that you want your bullet journal format to be flexible, fast, and fit to your focus.  How to Start Bullet Journaling Create an Index. It's the Table of Contents of your bullet journal, where you write down page numbers and their corresponding sections.  Write a prayer, a grounding thought, or, 3-5 simple joys in life. Write down three peaceful thoughts and joys you find. I find that it's helpful to have something grounding and centering at the top of my journal, to put myself into perspective. Categories. This is where you break down and compartmentalize your priorities for this notebook. Your bullet journal categories will organically start to build up as you journal more regularly. Use your categories to keep you honest and mindful of the tasks, projects, and priorities you avoid.  Logs and Calendar.  The daily log/  weekly spread is where you outline the state of your union: I begin with a breakdown of the categories we mentioned: personal, financial, spiritual, etc. On a weekly basis, it's important that you keep yourself honest and review your logs. Notice what tasks roll from week to week. Notice what categories get neglected and moved back week to week.  Create Your Spread. A spread is a few pages devoted to a certain project or time period. For example, each week I create a 2-page spread, and write down what's on my calendar along with a little checklist built on tasks pulled from the….CATEGORIES LIST! The daily and weekly spread keeps me honest.  Links to My Favorite Bullet Journaling Resources: The IGTV about setting up your bujo is live on @bribookspod Leuchtturm1917 from Paper Source BeRooted journal Episode: How to Bullet Journal Like a Pro Episode: Bullet Journaling 101 with Bri Book

When you want to improve your speaking, it's important to expand your vocabulary. When you expand your vocabulary, you elevate your mental dictionary and give yourself the chance to use words that are more descriptive, precise and articulate.  But learning new words to expand your vocabulary isn't just a matter of picking up a dictionary. It requires a more thoughtful process of finding the right vocabulary, recording it, memorising it and using it. When each of these steps are performed in the right way, it will definitely help you to commit new words to your mental dictionary so you can recall them at a later time and improve your speaking. In this episode, I talk about:5 Steps to expanding your vocabulary so you can improve your speakingHow to find new vocabulary to learnThe word journals that I use for Japanese, French and English vocabularyDigital apps to learn new vocabulary, record and memorise those wordsEbbinghaus Forgetting CurveMoving new vocabulary from short term to long term memory using Spaced RepetitionUsing new vocabulary to memorise it betterThe first word you should put in your word journalResources that I mentioned in this episode:Moleskin Notebooks or Paperage notebooks (for word journal)Leuchtturm1917 notebooks (for word journal)Digital Apps for vocabulary building: Vocabulary.com, Vocabulary Builder by Magoosh, Word a Day WidgetEP081 Articulate Complicated Thoughts ClearlyKara's YouTube channel playlist for “Be More Articulate and Well Spoken”Learning & Development Video Courses!Assertive Communication Skills MasterclassBusiness Etiquette 101: Social Skills for SuccessPowerful, Confident Body Language for WomenLeadership Presence 30 Day ChallengeBecome Known as a Go-To Expert!Download 21 ideas on How to Become Known as a Go-To Expert:   https://www.executive-impressions.com/gotoexpertseriesCheck out Shortform, the world's best book guides!Check out books on Shortform to help you be more articulate! I know. I know. Long term listeners know what's coming first but this first gift combo is an #AmWriting favorite for a good reason. The three of us own the same journal and nearly identical (save for the color of the elastic fastener and monogram) custom leather Fillion and we love them so much. Our favorite calendar/journal is, and has always been, the Leuchtturm1917 monthly planner with 136-page dotted notebook pages. We love everything about it - the monthly pages, the number of dotted pages, the weight of the paper, the pocket for stickers in the back - oh, it's so good. Sarina keeps a very eager eye out each year and two of our favorite days are the “what are next year's colors?” discovery day and the day Sarina hands over the new beauties in our color of choice. Sarina's planner is a thing of beauty so here's a pic of what her month usually looks like (stickers are for completing the day's word goal):What's a Fillion, you ask? Well, about ten years ago I bought a gorgeous tri-fold leather holder for a journal at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas and a very happy love affair was born. I actually met the woman who makes these lovelies, Lesha Shaver (pic below), owner of Little Mountain Bindery, and she's currently making a custom leatherbound book for a lucky someone on my holiday list this year. There are tons of options for the Fillion, but ours is the XL trifold with our initials in Huxley font. You can fit two notebooks in there if you want, plus the optional magnetic pocket is great for stickers, ruler, stencils, that sort of thing. I've been giving this Fillion to people as a thank you gift for years (for example, everyone who has blurbed my books has one with their initials and their favorite color elastic cording). In plucking the proper url to link in this post I just discovered Lesha has created a deluxe Fillion box set and now my mouth is watering. Given that we have our journals, now we need to have a very serious conversation about pens. I have choices, of course, but Sarina has OPINIONS. Her current favorites are:* Uniball Jetstream retractable fine (.7mm) ballpoint pens in black.* Pentel EnerGel RTX medium point (.7mm) retractable liquid gel pens in assorted colors. * Pilot Frixion light pastel highlighter with erasable ink and chisel tip 3-pack.I happen to love my black Sharpie ultra fine point pens, but that's just me. They do bleed through most journal pages, so I understand if you are offended. Here's the thing about the Pilot Frixion pens: they erase using the heat generated by the friction of he eraser on the paper and it's a perfect erase. I took Sarina's Frixion pen obsession to a whole new level and bought the big 24 set. Looooook how pretty….If our pen choices don't turn your crank, look around at one of our favorite sources for pens and other addictive office items, JetPens or MochiThings. I apologize in advance. Other fun things I've kept on a running list this year:Bulk blank notebooks with kraft paper covers (I keep the tiny ones, 10 for $24) in my pocket or wallet at all times because I'm 52 and starting to forget things. This adorable Kaweco fountain pen in smooth sage. It's tiny and light, and I love it. I linked the medium nib but it comes in lots of versions. The ink is specific to this pen and comes in lots of colors, too. I am terrible with glasses. Mine get left all over the place (there are three pairs of glasses in my woods, right now, sitting on stumps or logs I can't locate) and I scratch them far too quickly. That said, this soft but upright Tät Tat glasses (or whatever) case really helps. I keep it on my nightstand and consequently I've managed to hold on to at least one pair of unscratched prescription glasses. Mine's grey-blue.Oh, and since people ask me all the time about my glasses, they are Warby Parker Ainsley in Marzipan Tortoise. Did you know Sarina made her own journal for romance readers? Yes, indeedy. The Kissing Books Journal by Heart Eyes Press. In fact, Sarina told me she even keeps a “Gifts for Readers and Writers” list on Amazon, so here's that, too. Finally, since few of us need more stuff, don't forget about memberships to The Authors Guild or PEN America. Members of The Authors Guild get access to legal services, web services, insurance discounts, all kinds of great webinars and events, and the opportunity to build your community of writer friends. This year, The Authors Guild helped advocate for writers and got Amazon to change its ebook return policy and was instrumental in getting ZLibrary taken down and its creators arrested and indicted for piracy. PEN America offers writer and reader memberships and both are vital to supporting their work advocating for for free speech, fighting censorship and book banning, and protecting writers from online abuse. NB: some of these items listed at Amazon have affiliate codes on them which means Sarina or I might make a few cents here or there from Amazon's coffers. I tried to link to smaller retailers wherever possible, though! Happy holidays to all of you. We appreciate you all so very, very much. This is a public episode. 8 Essentials For the Ultimate Fall Refresh

Bri Books

Today, I'm sharing my ultimate fall refresh essentials--everything you need to start the cozy season off right. Any change in the seasons and calendar is an opportunity to reset, reflect and refresh and get into the coziest, comfiest fall state of mind. Let me know what your autumn refresh routine looks like at @bribookspod on Instagram and Twitter, and by using #bribooks while you listen! 1:37 - #1: A notebook! Every autumn, I go to Paper Source and Barnes and Noble to scour the Leuchtturm1917 notebooks, which come in every hue under the sun. I love the bullet journaling approach (here's an episode of Bri Books about how to start bullet journaling!) I'm starting your fall reset with a notebook because you have to know where you want to go to get to where you want to be. Having a designated place to dump thoughts, plans and problems alleviate mental clutter. (Here's a link to my favorite Leuchturn1917 notebook.) 3:20 - #2: New tote bag! The CALPAK Haven laptop tote has taken the place of my everyday canvas bag. Inside the CALPAK tote is a removable laptop compartment. My favorite function? The slit in the back AKA the ‘luggage pass-through,' so you can slip through your carry-on luggage handle. This is the bag that'll define my fall ‘on-the-go' look. (Here's a link) 5:40 - #3: Bluetooth earbuds! The ones I've been using all summer and will use into winter are the Jaybird Vista 2 wireless sports earbuds. They're designed for athletes--think runners, rock-climbers--who need reliable earbuds with strong sound performance. They hold a charge for about 24 hours, and the case itself is a charging port. Here's a link to where to grab the Jaybird Vista 2 wireless sports earbuds, a definitive fall essential that you'll use year-round. 8:20 - #4: Kitchen essentials! Namely the Balmuda kettle and toaster. When the temperatures cool down, I get excited to make hot beverages around the clock and roast vegetables 24/7. In this respect, the Balmuda kettle and toaster have become a non-negotiable. All of their products are designed with a minimalist aesthetic to be beautiful and functional. From the kettle's painted stainless steel to the ergonomic handle, using the Balmuda kettle is a downright pleasure. You can use the toaster for roasting veggies, warming bread, baking cookies, steaming fish, warming up leftovers, roasting veggies--basically anything. If it's time for you to make an investment in your kitchen appliances as the cozy season creeps up, the Balmuda kettle and toaster deserve a spot on your list and kitchen counter. Here's a link to purchase the Balmuda kettle and toaster.  12:15 - #5: Tea and cider! Now is the perfect time to add tea and cider to your beverage collection. You can make apple cider slushies, cocktails, etc. at home to give a seasonal refresh to your beverage collection. My favorite autumnal teas are Traditional Medicinals and TeaPigs.  15:00 - #6: Handcream! Two hand creams I've been loving: Caudalie Nail and Hand Repair and Avya Nourishing Hand Treatment. I've been using Caudalie Nail Repair for five years now, and I buy a new tube each autumn. Rich in shea butter, avocado butter, polyphenols, the touch is so hydrating. If you prefer a rich hand cream that doesn't leave a greasy film, this is the one. Here's a link to purchase the Caudalie hand cream. Up next: the Avya Nourishing Hand Treatment. Avya nourishing hand treatment is rooted in ayurvedic medicine and has hyaluronic acid that helps hydrate and protects the dry chapped skin of your hands. The best part: the founder of Avya Skincare originally created the product as a face cream. Here's a link to where to pick up the Avya hand treatment. 17:23 - #7: Aromatherapy tools! When you think of autumn, certain scents come to mind: pumpkin, dried leaves, apples, rain, mulled cider. Take that exact same energy, bottle it up, and you have Aromatherapy Associates' atomizer diffuser. The atomizer is a waterless and portable diffuser, meaning you can carry it with you from room to room. Aromatherapy Associates is one of my favorite British brands, well-known in the wellness space for their innovative approach to aromatherapy.  The diffuser disperses a microfine mist directly from the essential oil bottle. And  since there is no water, it is easy to move around without the need to clean between uses. The ‘Deep Relax' essential oil blend and the ‘Breathe' pure essential oil blend are my absolute favorites for everyday use. Don't overlook the power of scent in creating a space that feels warm to you. Here's a link to where to purchase Aromatherapy Associates' atomizer.  20:30: #8: A staycation! This autumn, hop on the highway and get out of dodge. Choose an easy location (no more than 150 miles away) and treat yourself to a long weekend trip. One of my favorites is going to the Catskills in New York state, especially the town of Kingston, New York. I find that the autumnal bliss I crave can be found 100 miles outside of New York City. Stone Ridge Orchard, a fantastic local orchard, grows everything from apples to pears in the autumn, and the pumpkin patches are plentiful. I highly recommend a trip to Kingston Wine Company in downtown Kingston, and a lazy afternoon spent popping into and out of vintage shops blows away the end-of-summer blues. Wherever you are in the country, find the hidden gems of your region or hometown to remind you that magic is all around--and you don't have to pay thousands of dollars to be inspired and reinvigorated.   OTHER EPISODES MENTIONED AND PRODUCTS MENTIONED Bri Books: How to Get Started Bullet-Journaling Leuchtturm1917 notebooks CALPAK Haven laptop tote Jaybird Vista 2 wireless sports earbuds Balmuda kettle and toaster Traditional Medicinals and TeaPigs teas   Caudalie Nail and Hand Repair and Avya Nourishing Hand Treatment  Aromatherapy Associates' atomizer diffuser Staycation to the Catskills in New York state, especially the town of Kingston, New York

Growing up in Washington, Hap was drawn to the outdoors and exploration. His family had a company in which Hap later took over and sold following his years at Stanford University.Following Stanford, Hap realized he didn't fit in corporate business, after numerous interviews requiring dress code and for his real name, "Kenneth" to be used, rather than Hap. He then went on to use the money left from the family business, to purchase a number of existing outdoor product stores, on the west coast. Mighty Creative Podcast Episode 103: Distributed Cognition (Lists!)

Compulsory, with Kim Werker

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2020 11:32

I first learned about the concept of distributed cognition when I was an undergrad studying linguistics, but I didn't know what it was called until I studied it again in grad school. For an absolutely impenetrable "explanation," read this. For our non-academic purposes, let's consider distributed cognition a way to extend our individual ability to keep stuff in mind. We might ask our spouse to help us remember to take our vitamins each morning – this is a way of extending our own memory to be aided by the memory of another person. In today's podcast, I wax on about lists. Making lists is, to me, the ultimate (and delightfully simple) distribution of my cognition. Without making lists, I am a constant victim of my routine failure to remember to do all kinds of things, from the trivial to the very important. Putting these things down into a list means I can rely on the list instead of on my flaky memory – I take each item out of my brain and put it onto paper (or into an app, or whatever). When it comes to our creative projects and fantasies, getting stuff out of our heads can be just as useful as it is for us to get anything else out of our heads. When we use the tools we have to distribute all the myriad things that are constantly swimming around in our minds, we help ourselves to think more clearly, and to fit more things into our days – because we stop losing things to our fallible memories. Have a listen, then hit reply and tell me about the creative lists you keep! Show Notes Each episode this season begins with a short clip of a maker or artist talking about a recent project they were obsessed with. I recorded all of these in April of 2019 at Camp Thundercraft, a retreat for creative businesspeople held each spring and hosted by the folks behind Urban Craft Uprising. I'm very excited to be going back to teach two classes at the 2020 retreat coming up. This week, we hear from artist, designer, and crafts instructor Robert Mahar, whom I did not fangirl upon meeting, I swear to you. I had the pleasure of taking an embroidery workshop from Robert at camp last spring, and it was fabulous. I still pull out the massive project every now and then when I need a quiet thing to do. My list-making system of choice is a bullet journal; I carry mine with me wherever I go. I do not make fancy spreads in it. In fact, I do not make any spreads in it whatsoever. (I have in the past, but I never keep up with them, so I've just stopped wasting my time with them). In addition to my daily to-do lists, I take notes from meetings and workshops in there, jot down project ideas, and put in anything else I want to protect from the bottomless abyss of my unreliable memory. I use a Leuchtturm1917 dot-grid notebook for my journal. And a Pilot V Razor Point Pen, which feels amazing against the grain of the paper. I stick one of these onto the back cover of the notebook so my pen is always handy. Also, my husband and I share a grocery-list app (also a Google calendar, and I don't know how other people who live together can manage without one of those), and I use Todoist as an online list-maker (usually for things in the future I want to be reminded about). I mentioned my unrealistically long Ravelry queue. I do want to apply such an approach to other kinds of projects I want to make, too. In the podcast I said I'd do this in my bullet journal. But maybe it'd be more useful to keep all the lists on a Trello board... Support the podcast by becoming a Supporting Member, and enjoy super perks, too. Today on Bri Books, we’re doing a deep dive into world of bullet journaling: What it is, what it solves, and how to get started. 1:00 - Bri Books on IGTV: Bullet Journaling 101! 2:00 - Define: Bullet journaling 2:30 - What seperates a bullet journal from a notebook you have on your shelf? I love Leuchtturm1917. 3:19 - The guiding principle behind bujo is you want the method to work for you. It’s about “tracking the past, organizing the present, and planning for the future.”  You don't want to spend so much time focusing on recording of the doing, that the doing doesn't get done. 5:08 - Step One: Index. It’s the Table of Contents of your bullet journal, where you write down page numbers and their corresponding sections. 5:30 - Step Two: Write a prayer, a grounding thought, a dream that’s on my mind, 3-5 simple joys in life. Write down three peaceful thoughts and joys you find. You can use those as anchors as you move through your bullet journal 6:28 - The prayer lately is John 15:5. Here’s a link. I find that it’s helpful to have something grounding and centering at the top of my journal, to put myself into perspective. 6:50 - Step Three: Categories. It’s never too early or too late to start creating categories. It’s a useful practice to keep different areas of life in check and balances.  Categories help me see if things are overloaded or underloaded, i’m able to give myself a gut check. 7:18 - Brionna’s story of setting categories and boundaries, and what it solved 10:00  Step Four: Logs and Calendar. There are tons of different types of logs--monthly logs, future logs (two or three months out), and a calendar-style log (current and next month) 11:08 - Logs are helpful for recording regular operations tasks you want to tick off. Gym sessions, grocery store, financial, books to read,  movies you wanna read, items to purchase next, phone calls that need to be made. 11:40 - Step Five: A Spread. A spread is a few pages devoted to a certain project or time period. For example, each week I create a 2-page spread, and write down what’s on my calendar along with a little checklist built on tasks pulled from the….CATEGORIES LIST! The daily and weekly spread keep me honest. It's’ where i break down large projects or tasks into daily chunks. It's’ where i cordon off parts of my day or week to different things. It's’ where i experiment and play on subway. Ifind daily and weekly spreads keep me helpful with everything else i set out with, and be flexible with my time by realizing the space i do have and the types of work i'm able to do throughout the week. I’ll share the resources, and give you a sneak-peak into how I set up my bullet journal in the Bri Books Newsletter. A few of the resources I found useful: How to Bullet Journal video from official website, Lucy Moon’s 2018 Bullet Journal setup,  Lucy Pebbles Bullet Journal video! I love gadgets and tools. I love my leaf blower and my cordless drill. I took my Instant Pot to the beach a few weeks ago. I'm eternally grateful for my refrigerator, washer and dryer, my laptop, Kindle, iPad, and camp stove. I love my kitchen gadgets too: my microplane, tea bag buddy, and rice cooker. I'm sure we all have favorite tools and gadgets. For the last few weeks, we've been talking about what's important to you and what changes you'd like to make in your life. As I've been working through that series, I promised you a practical episode about the tools I use in pursuit of a better me. We're actually going to spend a few weeks here. Your toolbox is really important. There are some key items you need to have available to be successful in making changes. This particular episode is actually the least important of the next three, but fun for gadget and tool loving people like me. As we talk about these tools, something else you should know about me is that I love well-designed things. I'm also very tactile, so how something looks and feels matters a lot to me. I want to curate an environment filled only with things that I really love to use or to look at. Are all the things I'm going to talk about necessary? Nope. Are they the best options? Maybe. Maybe not. These are the things that I'm using right now. Your mileage may vary. Let's talk about planners. A million years ago, when I got my first real job and needed to be able to keep track of tasks and appointments, I began using the Franklin Covey planners and materials. I used them for years. They're effective and useful. I don't use them right now because they don't fit my lifestyle. They don't work as well for what I need. I've used an awful lot of different planners and systems since then. I mention that to explain that all of them are more effective than nothing and all are perfectly suited to someone. So, if my tools don't appeal to you, just try something else until you find something that works perfectly for you. Standard calendar-based planners don't work well for me anymore because my life is really variable. Sometimes I need a daily calendar system and sometimes I don't. So, all planners that are based on a calendar only get partially used and because I don't need it all the time, I don't carry it with me and so even when I would need it, I don't have it along. Usually, around February or March, it becomes buried on my desk, never to be used again. If you need a calendar-based system, there are many to choose from. Here's what I do instead. I use a combination of a Google calendar, a journal, and a goal-planning system. I use Google calendar for appointments and long-term plans, like vacations. I check it every day and have it available on my phone. It's with me all the time when I need it. I got intrigued by bullet journaling a few years ago. I did a ton of reading, understood their philosophy, saw beautiful examples and decided to try it. Very quickly I realized there were things about it that made sense for me, but most of it did not. I do use my journal for to-do lists, brain dumps, tracking things, and daily calendars when I need one. But, I also collect notes, thoughts, lists (like books, I've read or art projects ideas). I use it to think through life questions. To brainstorm plans and to keep track of things I want to remember. I use it to get ideas out of my head so that I can move past them. In these activities, it more resembles a commonplace book than a planner. Commonplace books are typically collections of thoughts, ideas, recipes or things to be remembered that you might gather as you go through life. I do create daily calendar entries when I get especially busy and need to plan how to get everything done. My journal of choice is a Leuchtturm1917. They have hard covers and come in a variety of sizes, colors and page styles. I use a medium size with a dotted page. I like them because I can choose a different color for each year - I tend to go through at least two per year. Last year was lime green, this year is emerald, which really is more like a seafoam green and reminds me of the ocean. I like the dotted pages because it gives me some guidelines without being as rigid as a graph or lined page. But, the best part about them is that they have numbered pages and several blank tables of contents pages in the front. As I use pages, I can choose to enter them in the front with the page number or not. I don't need to know where my daily calendar-type pages are, because once past, I shouldn't need to reference them again so I don't note those in the front. But, lists, plans or ideas pages…those I can enter on the contents pages and they're much easier to find in the future when I need to reference them. I'm also partial to colored pens. I'm an artist and love art supplies. When art and office supplies intersect, I'm even more of a sucker. So. I have a pen holder with a jillion colors of pens. My favorites for daily use are Pentel EnerGels in a variety of colors. If you do any research at all on bullet journaling, you'll find beautiful, elaborate, lovely journals with colors, stickers, washi tape and gorgeous design. While mine has lots of ink color, it is not like that at all. Those journals are impressive. I love looking at them. But, my journals tend to be raw, messy, and not designed. You have permission to use your journal however you want. Other than one particular kind of entry, I use color completely randomly. I'm messy. My journal is a tool to keep my head and life organized so that I can do my art - live my life - out in the world. Many people's journals are their art, and that's a wonderful thing. But, they don't have to be like that. Mine is definitely not. Before I leave the topic of my journal, there are two things that I used to do in my journal that I'm separating out this year. I'm adding two other journals to my toolbox. One will be a book journal and one a sketchnote book. I read a lot and I read fast. Two years ago, I decided to read 100 books a year. I didn't do it. Because I realized during that time that that's a really bad goal for me. I was reading just to meet the goal. I wasn't absorbing the information from the books the way I should. So, I'm planning this year to have a dedicated place…my book journal…to slow my reading down. I'm going to record the books I read and either take written or visual notes as I read or at a minimum write a synopsis and my thoughts about each book when I'm done. Instead of a particular quantity of books, my goal will be 30 minutes of reading a day with the note-taking helping me to absorb and apply the information. This journal will stay at home. The other thing I want to separate out is a note-taking journal that will stay in my bag. I've started taking visual notes of speakers at workshops, sermons, and meetings and I want a different type of paper for that, so will be putting that into a separate journal with art paper. That's the practical everyday side of my tools. But, there's a planning side too. I've tried a lot of different planning systems over the years, but my favorite right now is Lara Casey's Powersheets. You can find out all about them and her philosophy at cultivatewhatmatters.com. The 2018 Powersheets are sold out (I know, I should have done this episode a month ago, right?), but you can always get the non-dated six-month version, it will work just as well. The powersheets mimic much of the planning approach that I have found to be effective in the past. They're about cultivating the life you want. Lara has also written a few books, the most current is Cultivate: A Grace-Filled Guide to Growing an Intentional Life. The Powersheets are a really thorough, powerful planning system based on cultivating the kind of life you really want. It's a planning system only, there's no calendar in it. However, there are activity sheets for each month that help you figure out what you need to be doing each month. I highly recommend it. By the way, I don't get anything from talking about these products, they're just what I'm using right now. One of the monthly activity sheets that I've found especially helpful in the Powersheets collection is the Tending List. It's essentially a goal tracking list of daily, weekly and monthly goals for each month. I mention it because a daily habit tracker is something that I have always drawn into my journal each month. The things I track often change month to month, but I got tired of drawing the chart…it gets messy and always looks the same anyway. I don't always have the powersheets with me and I usually track more things than the powersheets have space for. So, doing it there is kind of a pain. Instead of redrawing it every month this year, I decided to create a tracking chart document that I can print and tape into my journal. Then I don't have to repetitively draw it and it looks neater. So, that's what I'm doing this year and you can download a copy of it below if you like. It's simple and functional and not cutesy or fancy…but, if you decide to track some habits in the new year, it might be helpful for you. You can print them off, cut them out and tape them in a journal or leave them as is and put them in a three-ring binder. [check the website shownotes for the download] There are a few miscellaneous items I want to mention also. I add a pen loop to my journal and usually have one pen hooked to the outside of it (my pens don't fit inside the loop well). Most of the pens I carry in a RusticTown pencil case. It's a brown, vintage leather zippered roll and one of my most favorite things ever. The leather feels wonderful, it looks like a well-traveled vintage piece and I have about 12 colored pens and sketch pens in there right now. Another random item I use is a chalk marker. I have a set of MooMoo Creative chalk markers and use them to write notes to myself on my bathroom mirror. In November, we write things we're grateful for. Right now, my 5 commandments are on the mirror. It's a good way to remind yourself of attitudes you want to have, quotes or verses you want to memorize or things you want to do or aspire to. I'll probably be mentioning these tools in the upcoming series on making lasting change and I wanted to give you an overview of them. You don't need any of these to make changes in your life, but Leuchtturm journals, Pentel EnerGel pens, and Cultivate What Matters Powersheets are some of the tools I have in my toolbox. Tools I use to organize my head and my life. Want episodes delivered to your inbox each Monday morning? Click here
