First up this week, the guys tackle the news that Revolut is into crypto! Can they break down the divide between old and new money? And is it dangerous that retail investors have such simple access to cryptocurrencies? And, hot on the heels of Revolut, Square has been running a trial on Cash App, a rival to Venmo, that has allowed a small number of users to purchase bitcoin. Next up, the report on the overhaul of the core banking system. And, as we at 11:FS know only too well, what a task that is! So why is it that banks need help to do it and how can they mitigate the risks involved? The FCA has announced a successful third round of its regulatory sandbox, with 61 applications and 18 accepted into the next stage, including Curl, Bud, Nationwide and Orca. And in a surprising twist (?), the European Commission has announced that it has extended the deadline for banks to meet new payment standards. So what are the most controversial changes and when's the new deadline? We also bring you a special interview with New10 CEO Mark Schroder, who talks about their partnership with ABN AMRO and what it’s like to be a fintech grown within an incumbent bank. Plus, N26 has launched a premium credit card and Liz Lumley is not impressed ("this is not news"); why America might have missed the fintech boat in India; and we couldn't let the news pass without talking about CryptoKitties. Thanks to all our guests, and thank you for listening. Spread the word, tell your friends and don't forget to leave us a review on iTunes. “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” - Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Jean-Baptiste Leroy, 1789. This famous idiom summarizes the only to certainties in life; however, based on the never ceasing news lately, I recommend we edit this to state “… except death and taxes and any number of men in power positions harassing / coming on to women.” I originally described this concept of this podcast as a “Charlie Rose roundtable interview format”; a description I need to change immediately thanks to the recent news of his idiotic discretions. And I sincerely believe the Harvey Weinstein accusations were the catalyst the opened the floodgates. Story after story has been breaking of men in power using their position to intimidate, harass, and treat women (and in some cases men - looking at you Kevin Spacey) in a derogatory and threatening manner. The NYTimes (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/11/10/us/men-accused-sexual-misconduct-weinstein.html) list is a continuous running inventory of famous men forced to come to terms with their past actions. A few years back I helped author a study (https://innotribe.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/The-PowerWomen-in-FinTech-Index-Bridging-the-Gender-Gap.pdf) for Swift on the issue of gender parity in tech/banking. The statistics of the lack of women in leadership positions at the time were jarring for me. My friend Liz Lumley summed this up well when she stated “There are more CEO’s with the name ‘John’ than women CEO’s in the banking / tech industry.” In this episode I interviewed three friends and company CEO/founders on the topic of sexual harassment and the “bro-culture” in tech. They include Jane Barrett (Founder & CEO of Goldbean), Laura Spiekerman (co-founder of Alloy) and Gesche Haas (founder of Dreamers & Doers). Each of these incredible company founders and tech leaders have had to deal with multiple encounters of sexual harassment and just plain stupid behavior. This topic couldn’t be more timely and each of these company founders I consider to be mentors to me. Both Gesche and Laura have spoken out previously on this topic and their experiences; Gesche with Bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2014-11-20/gesche-haas-reflects-on-harassment-in-tech-industry) and Laura with Megyn Kelly (https://www.today.com/video/women-speak-to-megyn-kelly-about-sexual-harassment-in-silicon-valley-997514307983). Jane is a superstar and is a routinely sought after expert on finance and investing (http://mobile.reuters.com/video/2016/08/09/goldbean-ceo-jane-barratt-on-what-invest?videoId=369527204). In our first all female episode, Sarah Kocianski takes the lead alongside Fiserv's Anna Bennett, Bud's Nina Mohanty, Girl Disrupted Liz Lumley and Innovate Finance's Sophie Winwood, to go through the top stories from the world of fintech and financial services in the last seven days. Kicking off with the US' first new payment system in 40 years that seemed slightly underwhelming, especially when compared with Alibaba's spending record on China's Singles Day. They also take on the new AI chatbot from Standard Chartered and whether or not the Apple FaceID hack was or wasn't a hoax, and are bankers right to feel sorry for millennials - and what are they going to do about it if they are? They also discuss Zimbabwe's lack of currency and huge bitcoin surges following the deposition of Robert Mugabe, a new bank card for spending bitcoin and ethereum; how banks such as Monzo stand to make money in the wake of open banking - and finally is it right that David Davis has promised bankers special travel rights in the wake of Brexit? What a show we have for you this week and it's a week of firsts - MJ's first time in the hot seat to host the show - on her own, no less - and our very own Benedict Shegog from the 11:FS Pulse team makes his Fintech Insider debut. So what's coming up on the show? David Cameron's back in business! US payments business, that is. The guys discuss his credentials for the job and why he might be acting like a Kardashian. Have we seen the end of the banking heyday? And why might ex-Barclays boss Antony Jenkins be saying so? We also hear about Russian bitcoin bros and Putin's views on cryptocurrencies, suggesting that Russia's central bank may be next in line to introduce regulation. We also caught up with Adam Dodds from Freetrade.io, the challenger stock broker, who shared their exciting news about achieving full FCA authorisation, and told us about their journey on the road to disrupting the stock trading industry. The team discuss Venezuela's reliance on cash and how it's stoking inflation. And how on earth will China give citizens a score based on their trustworthiness? Should they? Will they? Also on today's show: Monzo fending off one takeover offer per month; Starling's latest app feature; Zopa building a new bank; Zazu crowdfunding a digital bank; and why it's finally been shown that Siri is a simpleton! The team discuss WhatsApp adding payment features; First Direct coming consistently top of a customer service poll, and the bigger banks always come last - we discuss if there's a correlation between the size of the bank and their market share and the poor quality of customer service? (are you bad when you're big?); and most topically, what responsibility does PayPal have over KKK donations via their service? And how do you find a middle ground between censoring free speech and social responsibility? They also take on start up shopping; retraining and up-skilling versus job cutting; pocket money startups; and turning trash into tokens in Amsterdam. We also have an interview with James Lloyd, Asia-Pacific Fintech Leader at EY, all about the Chinese fintech and Alipay stories that have been making headlines this week. In this episode Aden and Simon are joined by regulars Kadhim and Liz for the news. This week we find out if it's really necessary to use VR in banking; and, as ATMs are dying and costing banks to run, we discuss the pros and cons of hard cash versus digital transactions – and the various reasons why people are still keen on cash. We also myth-bust the theory that consumers are less trusting of robots or AI for banking and money movements than they would be for major surgery; and if it's true Google can track what you're buying online and offline via your credit card purchases – and how do we feel about this? Finally, the team debate the importance of big banks and banking regulators beginning to pay attention to fintech, and why Chicago should be a fintech hub, but isn't. In this episode Liz Lumley, Managing Director of Thought Leadership at Rainmaking, says a woman approached her at one of their events recently and said, “I’m here because I get told all the time: You need to work with startups, and then no one tells me how.” The Rainmaking Summit was designed to give people like her the tools they need to make innovation happen. Straight talk. No bullshit. We sit down with key participants in London to get the lowdown. “We need to move from ROI to R&D,” says Nektarios Liolios, CEO & Co-Founder, Startupbootcamp FinTech. “R&D implies failure. It implies experimentation, and just keep trying, keep trying until it works, right? Having been in the financial industry for nearly 20 years now, we don’t have that. There is no concept of building product, or doing anything, with an R&D mentality. Whereas any other industry has that.” Guests Liz Lumley, Managing Director of Thought Leadership, Rainmaking @LizLum Will Bentinck, Head of Careers, Makers Academy @isoworg Nektarios Liolios, CEO & Co-Founder, Startupbootcamp FinTech @nekliolios Jennifer Rosen, Founder & CEO of JnR Communications To learn more about the team behind FinTech Insider, visit us at 11fs.co.uk The post Ep210 – Rainmaking Summit: Show Me How to Innovate appeared first on 11FS.
