The week of December 11, 2024 on The Metallica Report… Steff and Renée are getting ready for the fourth biennial Helping Hands Concert & Auction on Friday, December 13, by speaking with two of this year's honorees. First, Renée catches up with actress Maggie Baird (aka the mother of Billie Eilish and Finneas) from Support + Feed. If that organization sounds familiar, it's because Support + Feed joined us on the 2024 North American M72 run of shows, spreading the word about their work changing the food equity system through education around a plant-based diet. Next, Renée and Steff enjoy an in-depth chat with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament, who discusses his non-profit organization, Montana Pool Service. MPS works to build world-class skate parks and connect youth communities in Montana, Washington, and South Dakota. Though unavailable to join the podcast this week, we still get to hear from Father Greg Boyle, the founder of our third honoree this year, Homeboy Industries. Being present in the moment and staying open to whatever unfolds. We all want to lead lives and careers full of joy and fulfillment. Maggie Baird certainly has, and the key, she says, is to stay open to new possibilities and “let your passion lead.”Baird is an accomplished actress, improv teacher at the Groundlings Theater, mother to music sensations Billie Eilish and Phineas, and founder of Support and Feed, a nonprofit addressing food equity and the climate crisis. Through it all, she has embodied the improv principle of "Yes, and..." — being present in the moment and staying open to whatever unfolds. “I have done many things,” she says, “but I never approached any of them as a career change. They all came out of new interests and new experiences.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Baird joins host Matt Abrahams to explore the critical role of communication in developing a career, and how improv principles can help us engage, as Baird says, “From a place of open-heartedness, appreciation, [and] collaboration.”Episode Reference Links:Support And FeedEp.118 Maximizing your Personal Brand: Communicating Who You Are to Help Get What You WantEp.1 Speaking Without a Net: How to Master Impromptu CommunicationEp.9 Quick Think: How Being Present-Oriented Improves Communication Connect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Maggie Baird, actor and founder of Support and Feed.(00:00:53) Career Transitions Advice on embracing new opportunities without rigid planning.(00:01:45) Teaching and Confidence Through Improv Discovering improv and how teaching led to a new sense of confidence and creativity.(00:04:03) Improv as a Communication Tool The principles of improv and how they can enhance communication and collaboration.(00:05:45) Structure and Freedom in Improv How improv provides structure that frees individuals to speak spontaneously.(00:07:37) Teaching with Empathy Empathy in teaching, remembering what it's like to be a beginner, and avoiding jargon.(00:10:34) Advocacy in the Music Industry Using questions and collaboration to drive change in the music industry and other sectors.(00:13:18) Collaboration and Positive Change The importance of collaboration, positivity, and meeting people where they are to create change.(00:16:07) The Final Three QuestionsMaggie shares her next career change, a communicator she admires, and her ingredients for successful communication.(00:17:46) Conclusion (00:00) - Introduction (01:36) - Career Transitions (02:28) - Teaching and Confidence Through Improv (04:46) - Improv as a Communication Tool (06:28) - Structure and Freedom in Improv (08:20) - Teaching with Empathy (11:17) - Advocacy in the Music Industry (14:01) - Collaboration and Positive Change (16:50) - The Final Three Questions (18:29) - Conclusion

Did you know that one of the most effective absorbers of carbon dioxide is... seaweed? Sanjayan, the CEO of Conservation International, joins the show to talk about how we can harness the power of the ocean to slow the impacts of global heating. Show notes from Chris: The world's oceans are crucial for the health of our planet, helping regulate the climate and global carbon budget. The London School of Economics has a great explainer. Coastal ecosystems are super important. Mangrove forests and seagrass meadows are incredibly effective at locking up carbon, helping limit the amount of global heating. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (or NOAA for short) has a fabulous 101 here. Conservation International are doing amazing work with communities around the world to protect nature. Parenting typical teenagers is no easy feat. Today's guest parented two as they skyrocketed to bewildering fame—and kept them astonishingly grounded in the process.Today we explore the uncommon reality that is Maggie Baird's life.A veteran actor, improv performer, and writer with a long list of screen credits to her name, Maggie is also a long-time vegan, animal rights and environmental activist, and the founder of Support And Feed, a non-profit that partners with restaurants across America (and soon the world) to provide plant-based meals to those experiencing food insecurity. She's also the coolest mom ever to two of the biggest musicians in the world—7x Grammy Award winning 19-year old Billie Eilish and Billie's equally talented brother and counterpart, 8x Grammy winning 23-year old brother Finneas O'Connell—all portrayed alongside Maggie's husband Patrick O'Connell in the recent Apple TV+ documentary The World's A Little Blurry.Although Billie serves as the film's primary protagonist, the documentary paints a technicolor family journey portrait. The story behind the story of this uniquely gifted foursome is both surprising and deeply heartwarming—a narrative exploration of parents striving to consciously guide their talented kids through their trepidatious and vertigo-inducing ascent to superstardom. It goes without saying that this is a conversation about parenting, how to raise conscious kids, and the many benefits of homeschooling and unschooling. It's about what happens when your children become unbelievably famous at a young age, seemingly overnight. And it's about organizing your life and your family's priorities around what is most important. It's also about the challenges of pursuing an artistic life. The importance of finding your cause. And it's a dive into Maggie's particular cause, which is to solve food insecurity and make the music industry, concerts, and touring, more ecologically sustainable. To read more click here. It's impossible to ignore the incredible work that Maggie Baird has done as an American actress, voice artist, screenwriter and founder of Plant-Based non-profit organisation Support & Feed. Much like her musician son Finneas and pop star daughter Billie Eilish, Maggie is a passionate vegan, and has inspired many to go plant-based. Maggie grew up in Colorado performing music, and studied theatre and dance at the University of Utah, before moving to New York City where she performed on Broadway. She made her TV debut in 1981 in the soap opera Another World and in 1989, her film debut in An Innocent Man. She has also appeared in many television series' such as Bones, The X-Files and Six Feet Under. As a vegan powerhouse, Maggie has continued to both entertain her admirers as well as encourage and enlighten new followers. In 2020 Maggie featured on a new plant-based cooking show on Amazon Prime Video called New Day New Chef. This hugely successful programme centred around her organisation Support + Feed, an initiative set up to help those ‘greatly impacted' by the coronavirus crisis. Support + Feed has supported LA's plant-based restaurants by encouraging people to gift order food for those in need. As further proof of Maggie's huge contribution, the organisation was crowned ‘2020 Company of the Year' by animal advocacy group PETA. Maggie also continues to be an advocate for the benefits of a vegan lifestyle on her socials, boasting strong and powerful messages that highlight animal welfare, sustainable living and the importance of looking out for those around us.   Follow Maggie here https://www.instagram.com/maggiembaird/ And show your support for Support and Feed here: https://www.supportandfeed.com Read all our articles about Maggie's work on Plant Based News here https://plantbasednews.org/tag/maggie-baird/ Learning about the film "They Are Trying To Kill Us' - https://theyretryingtokillus.com/ Find out more about V.A.A.O - https://www.wearevaao.org This episode is presented and produced by Robbie Lockie, and edited by Phil Marriott. 00:03:05 Discovering the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles 00:06:25 Should we tell young children where their food comes from? 00:09:08 The challenges of eating healthily in the U.S. 00:19:32 Childhood and adolescent interests and ambitions 00:24:36 Raising children Billie Eilish and Finneas as vegetarian 00:28:49 Carnism vs Veganism 00:32:32 Billie Eilish and Finneas embracing the importance of veganism 00:37:58 The U.S. Election 00:43:02 Donald Trump, misinformation and conspiracy theories 00:48:00 The harmful effects of social media 00:50:15 Tips for a happy marriage and a balanced family 00:53:22 Finding calm within the pressures and distractions of work and social media 00:59:08 Acting achievements 01:05:58 Support + Feed 01:09:57 The importance for white vegans to be vocal about systemic racism and the Black Lives Matter movement 01:13:43 VAAO / They're Trying To Kill Us 01:17:39 Stranded on a desert island

Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.

It's not easy being a teen. Being the parent of one is no walk in the park either. Actor/singer/songwriter Maggie Baird puts it this way, "You're so involved in your little kids' lives. You feel so needed. And then they get to be teenagers. They really really need you, but they don't display it in the same way. They don't necessarily want you to be quite as present, and you find yourself at a loss. How do you be this present parent without going out of your mind?" Annie talks with Maggie about her new film, "Life Inside Out," in which she co-stars with her son, songwriter, Finneas O'Connell. Life Inside Out is an honest and beautifully textured mother-son story, based on Maggie's family. Watch the film trailer.
