It's all about balance and moving away from perpetual growth mode. It's about understanding that if you're a tightrope walker, you can't stand still, because the minute you stand still, you fall off. So you have to move forwards, or backwards. There's no qualitative judgment about whether it's better to move forward or backward. It doesn't matter. You can grow or you can shrink : it's all about balance. If you stay balanced, you'll survive.A colleague recommended that I invite arts administrator and consultant Jane Marsland to a conscient podcast conversation.I went to Jane's website and read about her interest in developing ‘new approaches and methods of working to emphasize agile and adaptive organizational responses that are informed by knowledge of constant environmental changes'. Art and constant environmental changes sounded just right for this podcast.Janes utilizes a process of working with arts organizations that she has learned through eighteen years of being affiliated with Arts Action Research in New York. Jane believes that each organization has a unique vision, point of view and way of working. The challenge is to learn how to discover, understand and reveal these unique qualities and processes.I asked Jane about art and ecology and how she advises arts organizations on adaptation to complex issues like climate change. ¡Hola y bienvenido a otra edición de WP A DAY! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.29.520757v1?rss=1 Authors: Basarrate, S., Monzel, A. S., Smith, J., Marsland, A. L., Trumpff, C., Picard, M. Abstract: Objective: Psychosocial stress is transduced into disease risk through energy-dependent release of hormones that affect target organs, tissues, and cells. The magnitude of the physiological stress responses reflects both systemic levels of these hormones and the sensitivity of target tissues to their effects. Thus, differential expression of receptors across organs likely contributes to stress transduction. Here we provide a quantitative whole-body map of glucocorticoid and adrenergic receptor expression. Methods: We systematically examined gene expression levels for the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), - and {beta}-adrenergic receptors (AR-1B, AR-2B AR-{beta}2, and AR-{beta}3), across 55 different organs using the Human Protein Atlas dataset. We also leveraged the Human Proteome Map and MitoCarta3.0 data to examine receptor protein levels and, given the energy-dependence of the stress response, the link between stress hormone receptor density and mitochondrial pathways. Finally, we tested the functional interplay between GR activation and AR expression in living human cells. Results: The GR was expressed ubiquitously across all investigated organ systems. Immune tissues and cells expressed the highest GR RNA and protein levels. In contrast, AR subtypes showed lower and more localized expression patterns. Co-regulation was found between GR and AR-1B, as well as between AR-1B and AR-2B. In human fibroblasts, activating the GR selectively increased AR-{beta}2 (3.6-fold) and AR-1B (2.2-fold) expression, confirming their interaction. Consistent with the energetic cost of stress responses, GR and AR expression were positively associated with the expression of key mitochondrial pathways. Conclusion: Our results provide a cartography of GR and AR expression across the human body. Tissue-specific stress hormone receptor expression patterns could make specific organ systems more responsive to the sustained, energetically expensive, neuroendocrine signaling pathways triggered by chronic psychosocial stress. 'This experience has taught me, like a lot of the work I do in life, that where you start isn't necessarily where you'll end up... the book we've written is much more practical and purposeful for our readers as a result of us really listening to [their feedback] and not being afraid to change our minds.' Diana Marsland and Julie Nerney began their work on Own Your Day just before the pandemic hit, and with a hypothesis that they were pretty confident about. Over the course of the next year, everything changed: their rigorous research disproved their original hypothesis and revealed a different path, and their close collaboration had to shift online as lockdown hit. For some authors that could have been the end, but Diana and Julie found a way of working together that transformed those setbacks into a new creative energy. In this conversation we talk about how management is changing and the issues faced by those with the Herculean task of translating strategy from the top into results on the ground, and also about those processes of research, pivoting and collaboration. The result is a masterclass for anyone wanting to write a book grounded in the real world, and particularly for anyone thinking about writing with a partner.

This podcast is all about leading innovation, and I am really pleased to be joined by Phil Marsland, founder and director of Blue Tree Consulting.  We talk about one of my favourite books, The Writer’s Map by Huw Lewis-Jones, before discussing Phil’s leadership expertise. Phil says: “I have got all the certificates, the bells and whistles, however, through my experience, what I have learnt is that you need to be pragmatic, in terms of what organisations need. So, part of how I have positioned my business is just under four words. It is listening, diagnosing, creating and implementing. So, what those 4 words say is that I will endeavour to really listen, and really understand, what is going on in an organisation, and I will conduct both bespoke psychometric tests, as well as my structured diagnostic process, to come up with a picture of what is happening in the organisation. In sharing that I will offer to create solutions that might be to improve leadership capability, perhaps management, and more generally, the overall culture of the business, and then through myself and a number of associates we will implement the appropriate solutions...Really one size fits none. You need to understand each organisation and come up with solutions that fit and work for them.  Phil tells us about his business, Blue Tree Consulting, and how he came up with the name and metaphor. He says: “I think my business, as you kindly introduced at the start is called Blue Tree Consulting, and that is a metaphor for my beliefs about business really. So, the roots of the tree are really the organisational purpose. The strength of the trunk is really the leadership capability. Then as you move into the lower boughs, that is all about your whole approach to people. You can put the HR badge onto it if you want, but it is really about how we are treating people in our business. Then as you move up into the leaf canopy, you are looking at growing management capability, for managing not just process and performance, but also individuals, and around all of that is your people capability. Now the reason why it’s a tree is not just because I like trees, which I do, is it conveys to me that whole sense of working as one unit, and everything being aligned. So, one of my beliefs that I really push with my clients is that whatever you do, whether it is growing leadership capability, or training managers how to do a disciplinary, or identifying talent, all that has to be aligned to your organisational purpose.”Before making the leap to set up his own business, Phil was Head of HR at Portakabin. He shares his tips and advice for moving from a corporate job to self-employment. His recommendations include these words of advice:“Try and create a network of support around yourself, whether that is through associates, mentors, you know, to help you along the way, people who have made this journey, people who can give you real pragmatic advice, sometimes emotional support.I certainly felt I had to figure out how much money I needed to earn, what sort of buffer amount of cash that I had, how long that was going to last, and how things were going to work from a financial point of view, in a worst case scenario, but in a best case scenario as well." Thank you very much, Phil, for a great conversation. I really enjoyed spending time with you on my Idea Time podcast.

This episode Adam Marsland joins me in the studio to talk about his current tour, new record, and performs a few acoustic songs for your listening pleasure. BIO:Recently described in SPIN magazine as "a high-energy cross between Brian Wilson, Paul Stanley, and Elton John,” Adam Marsland's pop adventurism, brash vulnerability and stubborn idealism have not earned him the record sales of his L.A. contemporaries Weezer (with whom he once shared rehearsal space) or the cult following of Wondermints or The Negro Problem (both of whom he has performed with), but he has had one of the more prolific and intriguing music careers of the last 10 years. A talented singer, arranger, performer, multi-instrumentalist and "one of the most gifted songwriters to come out of the west coast in a long time" (Time Out-NY), Marsland has pulled off rock, punk, baroque pop, soul and alt-country through the course of seven albums and 22 tours. When his label collapsed on the week of the release of his band's third CD, he went totally underground, touring alone for 2 1/2 years straight and selling thousands of albums out of the back of a 1994 Toyota Tercel. More recently, thanks to the advent of myspace, a jaw-dropping band that includes a bonafide pop legend, and a tour-de-force live album of similarly overlooked but worthy Beach Boys songs, Marsland's smartass-punk-meets-music-geek songs and persona have attracted a new audience. Most recently, he played guitar and keyboards side by side in studio and onstage with Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers Hal Blaine and Don Randi and legendary guitarist Jerry Cole in recording sessions recreating '60s hits they originally played on for the soundtrack of the upcoming Shawn Bryant-produced documentary Makaha. His music began to be used more frequently in TV and film, including for the Fall 2007 season MTV Road Rules, Lisa Williams: Life Among The Dead, Scott Baio Is 46 And Pregnant as well as the Sci-Fi channel original film The Headless Horseman. An instrumental version of his song "Burning Me Out" was used as the end theme for I Know My Kid's A Star on VH-1. In 2008 Adam completed his return to full-time music-making with a 20 track album called "Daylight Kissing Night - Adam Marsland's Greatest Hits," released on March 18, 2008. With a artist-breaking $5.99 list price and several new recordings included, the album was his first marketed exclusively to the retail chain since his Big Deal days, and was the subject of an intense word-of-mouth campaign among Adam's fan base. The CD immediately sold out across the U.S. and reached 17 on Amazon's rock chart, followed by a traditional media campaign and a 40-date national tour in the summer. Writing and rehearsals are also underway for a new studio album, his first in four years. The opening song was:"Tales of My Pop Rock Love Life" - by Your 33 Black AngelsAs promised - THE FLYNN REPORTI'm bored, let's just do a bunch of simple sites.
