For Halloween, we bring you an ode to three quintessentially creepy creatures: bats, arachnids, and snakes. First, bat researcher Elena Tena joins Host Flora Lichtman to describe tracking the greater noctule bat in flight and learning that it can feed on migratory birds. Then, arachnologist Paula Cushing describes the camel spider, which is neither a camel nor a spider. And herpetologist Sara Ruane highlights one of her favorite snakes, the tiger keelback, which is both venomous and poisonous. Plus, what makes a lake spooky? A pond possessed? Flora talks with Geo Rutherford, creator of the Spooky Lake Month series on TikTok and Instagram, to learn about some of the spookiest, most mysterious lakes on the planet. Guests:Dr. Elena Tena is the national coordinator for the Spanish Bat Atlas project.Dr. Paula Cushing is senior curator of invertebrate zoology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in Denver, Colorado. Hosts Kevin and Alex navigate a rainy, warm Thursday, providing weather, sports, and political updates. Senator Tim Sheehy's "common sense" approach to politics—secure borders, safe streets, cops are good, criminals are bad, boys are boys, and girls are girls—is praised as the antidote to Washington's chaos. The Supreme Court's debate on redistricting is featured, with a critique of Justice Sotomayor's views. In a bombshell report, Sandra Smith discusses how drug cartels are placing bounties on the heads of ICE agents. The show also features Bridget Riedel giving a surprising lesson on equine genetics, and Steve Carney offers an update on deer hunting and fishing conditions, noting the lack of ducks due to warm weather. Political & Social Headlines Common Sense Warrior: Senator Tim Sheehy is hailed as a common-sense rock star, with hosts praising his simple statement of core American values: "Secure borders, safe street, cheap gas, cops are good, criminals are bad, boys are boys, and girls are girls". His background as a Navy SEAL and successful businessman who doesn't have to be in politics is highlighted. Cartel Bounties: A report from Sandra Smith's America Reports details how drug cartels are putting bounties on the heads of ICE agents. Nancy Pelosi's "Shut Up" Moment: Former House leader Nancy Pelosi is heavily criticized for her physical and cognitive state, particularly after snapping "Shut up!" at a reporter asking a simple question. The Race Card & Redistricting: The hosts criticize Democrats for using race in redistricting, arguing that voters of all colors are tired of victimhood and affirmative action. Agricultural & Outdoors Report Equine Genetics Class: Bridgette Readel gives a surprise lesson in livestock genetics: A Mule is the product of a male donkey (jackass) and a female horse (mare). A Hinny is the offspring of a male horse (stallion) and a female donkey (jenny). Mules and hinnies are almost always sterile. Hunting & Fishing: Outdoors expert Steve Carney is seeing "scrapes" (where bucks paw the ground and rub scent) in the woods, indicating that the rutting season (best hunting) is about three weeks away. He notes that duck hunting is pathetic due to the lack of cold weather , but fishing is excellent as it's the best time of year for walleye. Weather, Sports, and Culture Rainy Thursday: The morning starts with rain and thunder, and is expected to reach a high of 69°F. Drivers are warned…

Shortbarrel is an Atlanta-based bourbon company whose bottles started hitting the shelves in 2021. Founded by a tight-knit group of bourbon enthusiasts, Shortbarrel specializes in crafting very unique offerings with the whiskey nerd in mind. In 2023, Shortbarrel purchased the Old Fourth Distillery and they have plans to open a flagship bar and retail shop in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Despite being one of the hottest new brands on the market, none of us had ever tried any of their products. In this episode, we taste and review The Bee's Knees which is an annual limited release that is double barreling and has four different variants (Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky). We also try their cask strength toasted barrel bourbon which is a unique blend of Green River and Bardstown distillate finished in a Kelvin barrel. So join us this week as we talk Shortbarrel and give you our honest opinions. You will also get to see and hear the end of Anthony's gambling career. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

For this short, we decided to taste and review two brand new bottles from Woodford. The 2025 edition of the Woodford Reserve Master's Collection is called "Sweet Oak Bourbon" and it started as regular Woodford distillate before aging 7 years in Chinkapin oak barrels. Coming in at 110.4 proof, this new release retails for 179.99 (700ml). The second bottle we reviewed from Woodford is a brand new distillery series release that is a 12 Year American Single Malt. Comprised of a 100% malted barley mash bill, this 12 year single malt is like nothing we've ever seen before from the brand. So which one is better? You'll have to listen to find out. Also, you won't want to miss this episode because in the midst of all the tasting, we also reblinded Kenny with Russell's 15 and Jack Daniels 14. There is a lot of action packed into this short episode.

Despite the fact that we are behind when it comes to tasting all the blind samples that members of our community have sent, in this week's short, we tackle two blinds that were sent in from Kris. Can we guess age, proof, and distillate once again? Trying things blind is one of our favorite things to do, even though it's incredibly tough. We are thankful to Kris for providing these samples and we hope you enjoy listening to us work through what's in our glasses.
