Dustin Dobbs is the President of Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers, a family-owned business headquartered in St. Louis. Under his leadership, Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers has expanded to over 50 locations across Missouri, Illinois, and Texas. Dustin was immersed in the family business from a young age, instilling in him a strong work ethic and commitment to the company's culture and values. He believes in empowering employees rather than micromanaging them. Hunt Demarest is a Senior Accountant at Paar, Melis & Associates, an accounting and tax firm specializing in automotive repair shops. He believes that accounting should always be made easy to understand for business owners. Hunt also hosts the Business by the Numbers podcast, where he shares financial advice and accounting insights. Walter Lybeck is the CEO of Point S Tire and Auto Service, a member-owned cooperative with hundreds of independent tire dealers across the country. He believes in building relationships and camaraderie among employees. Walter stresses the importance of saying "yes" to opportunities, even when hesitant, and turning those opportunities into successes. Steven Fafel is co-founder of AutoOps, an online scheduling tool that integrates with most shop management systems. Steven believes that all marketing efforts in a shop should include the option for online scheduling. He also believes that good customer service is key to customer retention, even more than online scheduling. Ron Dolan is the President of Sailun Tire North America. He believes the key to success in sales is connecting with people, telling the truth, and treating them the way you want to be treated. Ron worked his way up in the industry by proving himself as a salesman, earning the trust of his customers with honesty — even turning down sales if he didn't believe in a product. In this episode… The tire and auto repair industry is a competitive market where businesses are constantly looking for ways to stand out and attract customers. How can shops build a loyal customer base and achieve long-term success in such a demanding industry? According to Dustin Dobbs of Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers, Hunt Demarest of Paar, Melis & Associates, Walter Lybeck of Point S Tire, Steven Fafel of AutoOps, and Ron Dolan of Sailun Tire North America, the keys to success in the tire and auto repair industry include exceptional customer service, employee empowerment, transparent and honest sales practices, and a focus on building long-term relationships rather than just chasing quick profits. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge looks back at conversations from past episodes that featured Dustin, Hunt, Walter, Steven, and Ron. Listeners will learn how these industry leaders have achieved remarkable success in the tire and auto repair industry by focusing on company culture, customer retention strategies, the importance of online scheduling, analyzing gross profit per hour, and the power of building strong relationships with both customers and employees. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:  [02:05] How employee appreciation impacts long-term business success [04:28] Effective pricing strategies based on convenience over competition [06:02] The benefits of relationship-oriented business purchases over price-focused ones [07:33] How deep customer relationships can be created from going above and beyond [09:46] The role of after-hours touchpoints in converting and retaining customers [10:36] How offering scheduling flexibility enhances customer experience and loyalty [11:58] The power of transparency and honesty in B2B sales for lasting partnerships [14:28] Why nurturing B2B relationships provides enduring sales success Resources mentioned in this episode: Dustin Dobbs Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers Hunt Demarest on LinkedIn Paar, Melis & Associates Walter Lybeck on LinkedIn Point S Tire Steven Fafel on LinkedIn AutoOps Ron Dolan on LinkedIn Sailun Tire North America Mike Edge on LinkedIn Tread Partners Quotable Moments:  “You have to empower your people. You have to let them know that you were supporting them.” - Dustin Dobbs “Margins are back up because they'll be upfront with the customer. Hey, you know what? It's here. It needs tires. We can put it on there. No, I'm not going to kill you on the price, but you also aren't looking for cut-rate prices.” - Hunt Demarest “When everyone's in it for the group, and they're not in it for the self, then it creates a much deeper fabric.” - Walter Lybeck “Every single piece of marketing that you do should at least provide the option for a customer to schedule online.” - Steven Fafel “When you're in B2B sales — I've always been in long-term relationships. I've had relationships with people for 20 years. So it's a long game, where other types of sales, it's about closing very quickly.” - Ron Dolan Action Steps:  Empower your employees: Encouraging employee autonomy fosters a culture of innovation and professional growth. Maintain core company traditions: Maintaining traditions boosts employee morale and strengthens corporate culture. Prioritize relationship building over price: Building strong customer relationships leads to loyalty and repeat business, overshadowing the lure of competitive pricing. Hunt Demarest is Senior Accountant at Paar, Melis & Associates, an accounting and tax firm specializing in automotive repair shops. Hunt is a seasoned CPA with a passion for optimizing team management and development, empowering shop owners with financial insights that drive greater success for their businesses. Armed with an economics degree from Penn State and an accreditation in business valuation, Hunt shares his wealth of knowledge as host of the podcast Business by the Numbers, where he provides valuable insights into the world of finance and accounting. Leveraging his expertise, Hunt authored the book Wrenches to Write Off's, guiding shop owners through the intricacies of tax season preparation and execution. In this episode… In the fast-paced world of auto services, understanding the nuanced differences between tire shops and traditional repair establishments is not just a matter of industry insight — it's a key to financial success. The commonly-drawn parallels between the two often overlook significant differences.  According to Hunt Demarest of Paar, Melis & Associates, tire shops are often compared to traditional auto repair shops without accounting for the significant variations in their revenue streams and profit margins. He explains that understanding the fundamental distinction between the two is crucial for realistic financial expectations. While a classical repair shop might achieve a 20% net income target, tire shops face a more challenging goal due to lower profit margins on tire sales. Hunt argues that a rule of thumb is that it may take about double the sales for a tire shop to achieve the same net income as a traditional repair shop.  On this episode of Gain Traction, Hunt and host Mike Edge unravel the intricacies of the automotive industry. Hunt's unconventional journey from an engineering major to an accountant sets the stage for a dynamic conversation. They explore the challenges of running an auto repair business, emphasizing the crucial role tires can play. Hunt's expertise shines as he provides practical insights into setting realistic financial targets and highlights the significance of analyzing gross profit in dollars per hour. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:  Hunt Demarest shares what he learned when he was a snack bar employee Why experience working with the general public can be valuable What attracted Hunt to become an accountant? How Hunt's accounting expertise can benefit auto shops Valuable business advice and observations from Hunt on multiple facets of tire and auto repair  The best movie Hunt has seen in the past year Why you shouldn't hire your brother-in-law as your accountant Resources mentioned in this episode: Hunt Demarest on LinkedIn Paar, Melis & Associates Todd Hayes on LinkedIn Joe Adams on LinkedIn Glenn Piccolo on LinkedIn Adams Automotive AutoShop Answers  Mike Edge on LinkedIn Tread Partners Sponsor for this episode...     Slam the Gavel welcomes Charles Buchanan-Boardman, Senior Accountant to the podcast. We discussed a situation where his great Aunt's employee gained Power of Attorney and taking all of his father's inheritance. However, there were a lot of people who wanted their money.    The home care worker became the personal assistant of the employee with Power of Attorney after his great Aunt's death. There has been in social media comments by the person who claimed that Mayor Goodman's son attempted to make himself a beneficiary of Charles' Great Aunt's estate.     We also discussed parts of the account of her death that her home care worker posted to Facebook. This podcast is to serve as a warning to families where a loved one becomes ill and anyone can walk in and take over their estate without anyone knowing.      The advice Charles gives is to be proactive in addressing these issues while the relative is alive to eliminate probate. Work with an attorney and a certified financial planner so you are proactive in keeping up with your estate planning and doing a will and living will. Keep an eye on fraud by checking your credit report so there is no identity theft to get assets.     The “guardian” should be a family member, and to keep an eye out for elderly family members and make sure that when their health declines that you follow up and proactively be their “guardian.” Children should be involved in what is going on before someone else comes into the picture.      Politicians need to step in and be advocates for families in this matter as it is far too easy for a complete outsider to come in and hijack a family assets. Five & Thrive

Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Product of the Week: Last week we covered an innovative hardware product to deter car break-ins, this week we're back at it with another hardware company led by Akshita Iyer. This company is called Ome. Ome upgrades your kitchen starting with the most vulnerable and dangerous areas - the stove. More specifically the stove knob. Ome Kitchens smart knobs connect to your mobile app so you have full control of the stove, even when you're not in the kitchen. Akshita turned down $800k from the Shark Tank judges,  a product and name iteration before their current offering today. From the sounds of it, product is being developed and stoves are getting smarter and safer. Give Ome Kitchen a look.   Another product of the week is called BackSpace run by serial entrepreneur, Faiz Imran. After successfully building a marketing agency and working with dozens of influencers and builders of online communities, he saw and felt the acute pain that brand builders and community galvanizers face which is monetizing their community. For example, let's say you're a fitness influencer through Instagram and Tik Tok and want to engage deeper and deliver differentiated product offerings throughout the community experience. Enter BackSpace where communities around people and products can engage through live chat, premium community levels, and simple mechanisms to up sell and cross sell passionate consumers. If you or any of your friends have built substantial communities online, check out BackSpace.  Companies Worth Applying To:  This week the company worth applying to is called Itential as they are looking for a Senior Accountant. This would be a great opportunity to work with a software company from a finance perspective and get great experience a level or two under C-level leadership. Ian Bresenhan, is the CEO of Itential and they make it simple for businesses to navigate a dual network ecosystem into one. What does that mean? Over the past few decades companies have built their businesses on physical or on-premise networks. Then the cloud came along. Now, how does a business who has some networks on prem and some networks in the cloud co-exist, coordinate data, and seamlessly operate. Welcome to Itential. They are hiring for several roles.  Events to Put on the Calendar:  Atlanta Healthcare Entrepreneurs Meetup is on Wednesday, October 5th with Atlanta Ventures Partner A.T. Gimbel who will be interviewing Ascend Medical CEO, Jason Madsen. The topic of conversations will be around the lessons and learnings Jason experienced co-founding WellStreet Medical and now running Ascend Medical which brings the doctor's office to you. Ranging from telemedicine to home visits to mobile testing, Ascend is reimagining the healthcare experience starting with location.  Beta Product of the Week:  This company is truly laying brick by brick and producing a strong foundation and that company is called ToolPath. Andy Powell, co-Founder of Atlanta success story CallRail, is on to his next company which is focused on manufacturing technology. ToolPath is making it easier to create CNC machined parts — from prototyping to mass production, and they are doing this by building cloud-based CAM software to automatically create g-code programs for CNC machines. Let's elaborate on those hieroglyphics.   CNC machining is a procedure used in most manufacturing operations. CNC stands for Computer Numeric Control and deals with the use of a single-setup or more computer to administer actions of different machine tools and in ToolPath's case, specifically mills for now. And CAM stands for computer aided software. So now with ToolPath, the opportunity for CNC just moved from the horse and buggy to a car because the software brings accessibility and convenience to the CNC market. Keep tabs on ToolPath and go to their website for an early look.    Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word!  Resources discussed in this episode:   Product of the Week:  Ome Kitchen BackSpace Companies Worth Applying To: Itential Rolls Open Events to Put on your Calendar:  Atlanta Healthcare Entrepreneurship Meetup  Beta Product of the Week: ToolPath

CLICK HERE TO BECOME A PIONEER FOR NEW LOW PRICE  Homesteading roots began with people trying to turn their life around  by making a profit. Signed into law in May 1862, the Homestead Act opened up settlement in the western United States, allowing any American, including freed slaves, to put in a claim for up to 160 free acres of federal land. Modern Homesteading is similar. Google pallet homestead projects and you will know, it's often people with little, that dream big. But dreaming and reality are 2 different things. Is it possible to run a profitable homestead? Let's see if our guest can help. GUEST INFO : Accountant Mike Mike currently works as a Senior Accountant at DiLeo & Charles. He has spent about a decade working providing accounting, tax, and consulting services to small business clients and high net worth families. He uses his extensive knowledge of tax and financial statements to help small business owners set and achieve business goals, both financial and otherwise. He currently specializes in strategic planning, income tax reduction, and cash flow management for small businesses. When he isn’t working Mike enjoys following Formula 1 and playing peek-a-boo with his infant daughter. What is a profit? Profit : a financial gain, especially the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something. 2 - advantage; benefit. TO BE PROFITABLE SOMETHING MUST PRODUCE MORE THAN IT CONSUMES A profitable garden produces more than it consumes. A profitable chicken produces more than it consumes. A profitable Homestead produces more than it consumes. To find out if we are running a profitable homestead we need to identify what is produced, what is consumed, and see if there is a gain in the difference. The 7 Costs Every Homestead Has to Cover Startup Costs - land, Infrastructure, fencing (Generally Amortized Costs) Running Costs - more than feed, Electricity, water, taxes on land, Surprise Costs - Vet bills, storm damage Finishing costs - butcher, packaging, storage TIME and Labor Opportunity Costs - time spent raising egg laying chickens could be spent driving for uber WASTE - Veggies grown not eaten, eggs go bad The PASTURED POULTRY PACKET is good at this. 3 Ways to Profit From Your Homestead Direct Products - lettuce, eggs, milk, cheese, REPLACING WHAT YOUR BUYING Indirect products - manure, land management, (BUT NOT UNLESS NEEDED, if you don’t NEED manure in your life it’s not brown gold) Sales - selling excess How much do you charge above your costs?
