On August 6, 1989, a chartered 757 nicknamed “The Magic Bus” took off bound for the USSR…on board were Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, The Scorpions, Skid Row, Ozzy Osbourne, Cinderella, and a few others… It was the dying days of the soviet union…but other than the communist hardliners, few people were sad about that…Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the USSR, had ushered in the era of glasnost and perestroika…reforms were being enacted and few freedoms were creeping into soviet society… This trip was part of that…a plane full of western rockers was headed to play a two-day festival in Moscow with attendance expected to top 200,000 people…it was the “Moscow Music Peace Festival”… it was hoped that the event would promote greater understanding between the west and the east during this time of great change at the end of the cold war… It was also set to raise money in conjunction with the “Make a Difference Foundation,” an organization dedicated to helping local Russian people who were addicted to drugs and alcohol…a lot of the money would go to messaging and rehab treatments… Wait—what?... Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, and all these other acts were part of a highly sensitive, properly diplomatic, international anti-drugs-and-alcohol project inside the soviet union?... Oh, yes…and on the plane, Ozzy was drunk the whole time…his guitarist, Zakk Wylde, was tripping on LSD…you had to be careful where you stepped because there were syringes on the floor…at the back of the cabin, people rotated in and out of informal jam sessions fueled by booze and drugs… Now you're probably wondering who came up with this idea and how it ever actually happened?...well, that's a bit complicated…it involved the CIA, Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, and 640 tons of marijuana smuggled into North Carolina—and the teenage mutant ninja turtles…and at the centre of all of it was a man named Doc McGhee—who just happened to be the manager of most of the bands on the plane… This is episode 22 of “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…it's how a drug-smuggling band manager helped end the Cold War…have I got a story for you. The Moscow Music Peace Festival was a two-day rock concert held in August 1989.  Held during Mikhail Gorbachev's period of Glastnost, Russia allowed a handful of western rock and roll acts to perform for the first time in Moscow, and over 100,000 people living in Cold War Soviet Union packed into Central Lenin Station to witness the forbidden fruit of late 80s rock and roll in all of its excess.  Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, and the Scorpions shared the stage with some Russian rock and roll acts to promote peace and raise awareness about drug and alcohol addiction….Because Ozzy and Motley Crue are just the people you want promoting the virtues of sobriety.  But the Moscow Music Peace Festival was also an important cultural moment near the end of the Cold War. By the end of the show, stoic Soviet soldiers were throwing their hats in the air and rocking out to the music. The event also inspired the Scorpions to write their hit song Wind of Change, which became an anthem for the end of the Cold War as the Berlin Wall came down just a few months later.  So tune in for this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll as we take a peek behind the Iron Curtain for a look at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. iTunes          Spotify          Youtube           Patreon Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition. Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko's personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon's images. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the '70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. Bob has also worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss and Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New Music Seminar held in New York City, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week. This seminal body of work reflects a profound commitment and long-standing personal friendship with the artists. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture. “All Dolled Up,” a DVD documentary made by Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck of their early '70s video footage of the New York Dolls, was released in 2005 with a follow-up DVD, “Lookin' Fine On Television” released in 2011. In the spring of 2007 FAAP University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, presented an exhibition of Bob Gruen's work. Titled ROCKERS, the exhibition attracted 40,000 visitors. The ROCKERS exhibition was also shown from April to July 2008 at Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery in New York City. Bob's “Sid Vicious with Hot Dog” photo was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, London, in 1999 for their permanent collection. The Experience Music Project, Seattle, acquired his “Clash Live in Boston”, “Tina Turner Multiple Image”, and “Bloody Sid Vicious” photos for their permanent collection in March 2012. In 2011 award winning director Don Letts made a feature length film titled ‘Rock & Roll Exposed – the Photography of Bob Gruen' including interviews with Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Alice Cooper, Yoko Ono, Billie Joe Armstrong and many more. Bob was presented in June 2004 with MOJO Magazine's prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London and in November 2010 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. For his many charitable contributions, Bob received the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award in December 2014 at the 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. Es conocido como The Madman (El loco), The Godfather of Heavy Metal (El padrino del heavy metal) y The Prince of Darkness (El príncipe de las tinieblas). Las canciones "Miracle Man", "Breaking All the Rules" y "Crazy Babies" fueron seleccionadas como sencillos. Además de “¨Let Me Hear You Scream”, los tracks confirmados del álbum son: “Diggin Me Down”, “Let it die”, “Soul Sucker”, “Fearless”, “I Want It All”, “Time”, “Crucify” y “I Love You All” Después del lanzamiento de Scream, Ozzy inició una gira mundial de 18 meses para promocionar su nuevo álbum. The Decade That Rocked. Mark Weiss is responsible for multiple iconic photos of Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, and Aerosmith. As the main photographer for Ozzy Osbourne, Mark first shot Metallica during the 1986 Ozzy/Metallica tour, and was soon after drafted to do the band's first publicity photos with Jason Newsted. It's all chronicled in his new book, The Decade That Rocked, focused on his work from the 1980s. In this episode, we also talk about Ozzy dressed as the Easter Bunny; Dokken and Freddy Krueger; Sammi Curr; the Moscow Music Peace Festival; Dee Snider at the PMRC hearings; Mark's brush with Glenn Danzig; shooting a very strung-out Dave Mustaine; and of course, a lot of Metallica. di Riccardo GazzanigaLa bufera di libertà che soffia sull'Europa nel 1989 arriva da lontano: inizia con la salita al soglio pontificio di Papa Wojtyla nel 1978, continua con l'azione di Lech Walesa in Polonia e deflagra grazie alle mosse di Mikhail Gorbachev in Russia.

As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the ’70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features.
