Chapter Thirteen: United Soccer Coaches

Founding Futbol

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2024 76:45

In 1941, National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) was founded. Now known as United Soccer Coaches, the largest soccer coaches organization in America (and the world) has been a key driver for the continued and evolving education of the coaching ranks. They were an initial investor in the coaching curriculum developed by US Soccer and then created their own programs later. The United Soccer Coaches organizes an annual convention that draws over 15,000 attendees and 200 vendors, connecting the soccer community in a vital way. Former president of United Soccer Coaches, Dr. Missy Price, joined us to share her journey through the coaching ranks and her passion for coaching education. She talks about her tenure at the helm of United Soccer Coaches and how she believes it and other organizations have advanced the discipline of coaching in America. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. In this episode I welcome a living legend, Al Albert. Al's accomplishments in soccer over a 33 year career at the College of William and Mary are too numerous to list. To provide a glimpse into his success as a head men's soccer coach, he had 29 consecutive winning seasons, 5 CAA tournament championships, 5 regular season CAA titles and several great runs in the NCAA tournament. The 4-time CAA coach of the year is in multiple halls of fame, coached several future pros, and published a book about the history of men's soccer at William & Mary, with the forward written by Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, perhaps his most famous alum. In further service to the game and his community, Al started the Community Partnership to provide elementary school students a place to play soccer no matter what their socio-economic status is. He rallied the Williamsburg, VA community to make donations, found funds through grants and encouraged people to volunteer. The program is now over 20 years old. Finally, as a testament to his impact on American soccer as a whole over his career he was elected the 60th president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, which is the largest single sport coaching organization on Earth. Many owe thanks to Coach Albert, my regret with this podcast is that I didn't bring on a few of his former players to enrich the discussion. Next time.

Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Before there was Beckham or Messi coming to America to play for Major League Soccer Franchises, there was Pelé and his stint with the New York Cosmos. From 1975-1977 the world's most recognized footballer spent the twilight of his career helping this country fall in love with the beautiful game.  His time playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL) provided a blueprint for what success could look like for the sport in this country. It boosted the NASL to previously unseen heights. Unfortunately, Pelé's (second) retirement also showed the continued vulnerability of America's top flight professional league. This episode explores the many layers of his time in New York and it's long-term impact on the game in the US. Our guest on this episode is Front Row Soccer editor Michael Lewis; he has covered 13 World Cups (eight men, five women), seven Olympics and 25 MLS Cups. He has written about New York City FC, New York Cosmos, the New York Red Bulls and both U.S. national teams for Newsday and has penned a soccer history column for the Guardian.com. He also was the soccer columnist for the New York Daily News for 22 years. Lewis, who has been honored by the Press Club of Long Island, New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists and United Soccer Coaches (formerly National Soccer Coaches Association of America), is the former editor of BigAppleSoccer.com. He has written nine books about the beautiful game and has published ALIVE AND KICKING The incredible but true story of the Rochester Lancers. He is also a member of four Halls of Fame, including the Eastern New York Soccer Hall and Long Island Soccer Football League Soccer Hall. One of the best parts of our Iowa Soccer Legends's Series is bridging the gap between the past and present. In a sense, it's almost like a history lesson. Today's guest, Mark Modersohn, is one that many people may not remember, but his collegiate playing career may be unrivaled by any Iowa soccer player ever. Among the Southwest Missouri State graduate's accomplishments: school career records in games (81), saves (290), shutouts (26), goals against average (0.88), goalkeeper wins (51) and minutes in goal (7,730). He was a four-year all-Missouri Valley Conference selection, the 1997 MVC Newcomer of the Year, 1999 MVC Defensive Player of the Year,  a three-time all-region selection from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and one of 30 players picked to the MVC all-centennial team in 2007. Interestingly, he hung up his gloves/boots after graduating and quickly transitioned into life in the business world. We discuss what stokes his fire and what it was like growing up in a competitive household. Of course, now it comes full circle for Modersohn the father, who now has his own competitive household with children in sports. Why do children play sports? According to a study by researchers at Notre Dame's Center for Ethical Education, it's to (#1) have fun, then—do something that are good at, improve skills, get exercise, be part of a team and enjoy the excitement of competition. But looking out at many sports fields or at many athletic events- sometimes, if we are being truthful, it looks like we are missing the mark. There are coaches screaming and parents gritting their teeth, fans yelling at referees and teammates shunning other teammates over missed goals or botched moves. What happened to the carefree freedom and fun that sports and athletic engagement once gave us? It's no wonder so many kids drop out of sports by the age of 13. And if we are really to ask ourselves how we can develop strong athletes who thrive at peak performance- do we really think this is the way? My next guest has some other ideas that can really help us. Ben Freakley is our guest today, and we will be discussing the roles of a performance psychologist and how he or she can use coaching techniques like mantras, visualization scripts, and breathing exercises to improve the performance of tactical athletes and first responders. We enjoyed this episode because the suggestions and tips Ben talks about can be applied to everything in life. Ben is incredibly humble and insightful, and you will see that he truly admires the men and women who serve our country and communities. Ben Freakley is the founder of Ready.Set.Resilient© and currently works for the Toronto Blue Jays as a mental performance coach. For over 15 years he has been helping individuals, athletes, teams, soldiers, and businesses improve individual and collective performance. Along the way, Ben has been a head soccer coach at the PDL and NCAA Division I level, a mental performance coach for special operations forces and general manager for a sports club with over 1100 members. He has consulted over 15 different university athletic teams across the country on leadership, culture and team dynamics. Additionally, he has worked with businesses providing team building events and motivational speaking and consulted hundreds of individuals motivated to achieve success in 1 on 1 settings. In 2016 Ben was a keynote speaker at the Southeast Regional Applied Association of Sport Psychology Conference (AASP) as well as inducted into The Georgia Southern University Alumni Association 40 Under 40 Class out of 33,000 alumni under the age of 40. He is a national staff instructor with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and presented at the 2017 NSCAA Convention on “Developing The Mindset of a Master Coach.” Ben holds masters degrees in Sport Psychology and Sport Management from Georgia Southern University where he was a NCAA Division I athlete. Topics of discussion: How to achieve the best blend of physical and mental performance by acknowledging the relationship between pressure and performance. Working towards understanding the factors that can lead towards improved or hindered performance. Using goal setting, breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation techniques, not falling into the trap of comparing yourself to others, and always looking towards becoming the best version of yourself. Ben describes how his process and application of mental skills training by listening to his clients and building rapport. Similar to a strength coach asking a player about his prior weightlifting experience, Ben asks questions on what goals they are hoping to accomplish, what are their motivations, and what is their role on the team? Change takes time, and Ben explains how he encourages his clients to stick with the program by being up front about the challenges and the time required to be successful. The two things that wreck performance and how breathing techniques, mantras, and visualization scripts improve your skills and lower anxiety before a stressful situation. What are the common characteristics of the mentally tough? Ben mentions an Israeli Defense study on motivation. Click here to read it. Nate and Dike open up the first show of 2017 with a conversation with San Diego Crusaders Director of Coaching Rene Miramontes to discuss Rene's involvement with youth soccer in San Diego and his passion for educating coaches. Rene was featured in an interview on SoccerNation.com in late 2016 in which he touched on his role as Director of Coaching for Crusaders and we wanted to bring him on to get a better understanding of where his passion of coaching originated. In this episode, we discuss the Barrio Station soccer program that sparked a fire in Rene and how his career has grown from San Diego, into Major League Soccer with the Colorado Rapids, and into the United States Soccer Federation as a Technical Advisor. We also touch on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention in Los Angeles from January 11-15th where Rene will be presenting on several panels, including a 1-on-1 with former Mexican National Team goalkeeper Jorge Campos. You're going to make mistakes- and that's OK - but use this as an opportunity to be humble and apologize - this is a great example to the kids. Teaching Children & Keeping it Fun Dr. Martin Toms': 'When you are coaching sports - you don't coach a sport, you coach a child' Don't professionalize youth sports - focus on developing the kids, not for the win today.  Long-term goals instead of short-term.  What do kids need from a youth sports coach? - Enjoyment, ownership, and to be intrinsically motivated. Winning It very much depends on what/who you are coaching - if you are coaching a prospective olympic gymnast, who's physical activity peaks at 14-15 - you have to start earlier But for all of us coaching kids ages 6-12- the focus has to be development over winning - so don't not play a kid just because it's a close game HUGE IDEA #1 Study done by Amanda Visek from George Washington University - asked kids: 'why do you play sports?' - 9 out of 10 answered because it is fun.  Then she asked them to define what fun is: they came up with 81 different characteristics of what fun is - and 'winning' was down at #48 on the list.  Link to article: Fun not winning Coaching high-level youth soccer - Coach O'Sullivan started every player 1/3 of the games - this gives you the opportunity later in the season/game you can go with who is 'hot' because they are all having opportunities to shine Specialization in Youth Sports HUGE IDEA #2 Unless you are coaching female olympic gymnastics,
