In this Spotlight edition, Gareth Davies and Ross Tucker dive ever deeper into the abyss of sport's Talent Identification and Development inefficiencies. With a nod to our most recent podcast on Gout Gout's meteoric rise and anticipated trajectory to sprint dominance, we discuss how elite sport 'farms' talent in a 'race to the bottom' that characterises the ruthless pursuit of champions. We discuss the costs this creates, both financial and human, using talent pathway practices in cycling, football, rugby and tennis to illustrate why lost young athletes and inefficiencies are features of the system, rather than 'bugs'. We also discuss the latest developments in the world of anti-doping, where WADA have announced changes to contamination cases and accidental doping, and where the UCI have moved to ban carbon monoxide use for performance enhancement, but not measurement.SHOW NOTES:Join DiscourseIf you fancy a bit of the coaching, sports science and sports news conversations with our amazing members, consider a small donation to become a Patron of the site, and get access to our Discourse community, where you can join like-minded fans and sports enthusiasts to keep the conversation going. The article discussing the retirement of junior cyclists and the ruthless efficiency with which they are replacedA research article exploring how U23 performances predict elite cycling performance, perhaps not surprisingly, as discussed in the showMy 2019 article on the curse of the precocious athleteThe Gout Gout podcast referenced in our Talent discussionsThe very interesting Discourse topic in which Gareth and others talk about the changes in professional cycling (Discourse members only)A news article on WADA's announcement about intended changes to the Anti-Doping Code, including the discussed changes to contaminated product and accidental doping rulesThe UCI "bans" carbon monoxide use for performance enhancement, but not for measurement. James is currently the Head of Talent Identification & Athlete Development at Elite Sport UAE and a Visiting Fellow at Northumbria University. James brings a unique blend of skills and experience as an accredited S&C coach, physical education teacher, sport scientist and researcher. His current research is focused on the effect of growth and maturation on performance in youth track and field. Previously he worked at the Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar as the Head of Talent Identification and Development, a senior strength and conditioning coach and performance support lead for Track and Field during his time there. In 2020, he was awarded the ASCA Senior Research Award on behalf of the Aspire Academy research team and James was also awarded the UKSCA's S&C Coach of the Year Award for Youth Sport in 2017 for his work in the school setting. QUOTES “When I used to speak to the athletics coaches about maturation, I'd say, yeah, he's an early maturer and they were like, so what? How much difference does that make?” “The mean maximum velocity for the approaching peak height velocity (PHV) group is 7.1m/s and the max velocity for the post-PHV group is 8.5m/s… So, in those situations, when you put them on the track, you can imagine how that extrapolates out over 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 meters” “So 87-88% of predicted adult height is typically the takeoff point for the growth spurt and we start to see a big increase in growth with the peak of growth being typically between 91-92% of predicted adult height.” “The best approach is to keep as many athletes as possible in your (TID) programs for as long as possible” “If we're applying these correction procedures to athletes, we're still talking about early maturing athletes that are running 7.5s for 60. They're still not world beaters at this point. They all still need support, but it's not to say we should exclude the early maturer either. We need to keep the people in the pipeline, keep giving them what they need in terms of strength and conditioning, and great coaching.” “Actually, being an early maturer for girls can be a disadvantage because of the fat mass gains that occur post-PHV versus a girl who is pre-PHV who's still relatively lean, not carrying fat. And in my experience, most of the girls will jump their highest CMJs pre-PHV and then it all flat lines” “There's certain sports where if you haven't accumulated training by a certain age, then, you know, the really skill -based sports, it's probably going to be harder to get there to an elite level” SHOWNOTES 1) James' background in both strength & conditioning and PE teaching and his journey to talent identification in elite sport in the Middle East 2) Why interpreting performance through a lens of maturation is important and how to track physical performance metrics around peak height velocity (PHV) 3) The continuum of maturation in young athletes from pre-pubertal to post-PHV 4) Different methods of predicting adult height in youth athletes and their respective strengths and weaknesses 5) Optimizing talent ID programs to enhance retention and the psychosocial aspects of these programs 6) Correcting track & field performance based on maturation to get closer to be able to compare youth athletes of the same age but different maturation levels 7) Potential differences between boys' and girls' physical performance measures around PHV 8) Strategies for working with sports coaches in the TID space to allow for maturation-based evaluation and adjustments for open skill sports 9) Managing training around PHV to help reduce injury risk and the typical pattern of growth and injury site location in youth athletes PEOPLE MENTIONED Ed Archer Alex Natera Amanda Johnson Marco Cardinale Phil Kearney Craig Pickering Shaun Abbott Stephen Cobley Tom Maher Matt Jordan Mike Young Jeremy Sheppard Dan Baker Boo Schexnayder

In this episode of Leadership on the Links, we explore the inspiring career journey of Alan FitzGerald, a golf course superintendent whose path has taken him from the emerald shores of Ireland to some of the world's top golf courses. Alan shares his experiences growing up around golf courses, his early career at Mount Juliet resort, and his education at Penn State and Loch Lomond. His six-year tenure at Pine Valley and 19 years at Ledgerock prepared him for his current role at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, where he continues to innovate and lead in the field of golf course management. Continuing Education and Innovation Alan's commitment to lifelong learning has been a cornerstone of his success. Earning his Master Greenkeeper certification stands as a key milestone in his career, symbolizing not just his expertise but his dedication to staying ahead in an ever-evolving industry. This pursuit of excellence has driven him to embrace new tools and techniques that continually push the boundaries of golf course management. One standout example is his early adoption of drone spraying technology. Recognizing the potential of drones, Alan integrated this cutting-edge tool to enhance precision and efficiency in maintaining course conditions. By leveraging technology to streamline operations, he has set a new standard for innovation in the industry. Beyond specific tools, Alan emphasizes the importance of staying on top of industry trends. Whether implementing the latest agronomic techniques or exploring new methods for sustainable course management, his proactive approach ensures that he and his team remain leaders in their field. Innovative Staffing Solutions A forward thinker in staffing as well, Alan has found creative ways to address labor challenges while maintaining high standards on the course. His use of the H2B visa program has allowed him to bring in skilled international workers during peak seasons, a strategy that ensures quality and consistency in course management. At the same time, he has also tapped into the experience of retired staff, whose mentorship and practical knowledge have proven invaluable to his team's success. Alan doesn't just rely on conventional methods to recruit and train staff. He is also a strong advocate of the First Green program, an initiative by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), which provides students with hands-on learning opportunities in environmental stewardship and golf course management. Through this program, Alan inspires the next generation of golf course professionals, while strengthening ties between the golf community and the public. Industry Engagement and Community Impact Alan's involvement with The First Green program exemplifies his broader vision for the industry. By integrating students into the operations of his course, he fosters a deeper understanding of the environmental practices and career opportunities within golf course management. The program not only serves as a valuable educational tool, but also enhances public relations, showing how golf courses contribute positively to the community. By engaging with the next generation of professionals and creating these meaningful connections, Alan helps bridge the gap between golf course operations and the broader community. His work in this area positions golf courses as community assets, showcasing their role in environmental stewardship and local engagement. Alan FitzGerald's career is a testament to the power of innovation, education, and community engagement. His dedication to adopting new technologies, developing sustainable staffing solutions, and inspiring the next generation continues to set him apart in the industry. As he moves forward in his role at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, Alan's forward-thinking approach ensures that he will remain a leader in golf course management for years to come. Soundbytes: "I think that was part of it, but it was a bit deflating for a while. Over the last 18 months, I applied for several jobs that I thought I could interview for, but I didn't get any." 17:07-18:00 “On the flip side, I was pleasantly surprised by a few things. For example, at LedgeRock, where I built everything from scratch, I thought implementing agronomic practices would be much harder. But, to my surprise, it's been going well so far.” 25:23-25:30 Quotes: "I think the interviews before I've tried to say the right things or do the right things, and I really wasn't myself. In this process, I was myself and in doing that, I took the pressure off myself somewhat." "I think it's great to see younger kids getting excited about the First Green program. However, engaging teenagers has been more challenging than I expected. To keep them interested, it needs to be more than just educational; it must also be challenging and engaging."  "Although our total payroll is close to 40, we only have around 25 staff members here each day. The flexibility in scheduling has been excellent, with up to 16 to 18 people working on weekend mornings. Overall, the setup has worked really well for us." “Leaving a long-term, comfortable position can be challenging, but exploring new opportunities can lead to personal and professional growth.” “Continuously pursuing education and adopting new technologies can help you stay ahead of the curve and improve efficiency.” Links Mentioned in This Episode: Tyler Bloom Consulting: https://tylerbloomconsulting.com/ The First Green - https://www.thefirstgreen.org/ Connect with Alan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alangfitzgerald/

In the latest episode of Leadership on the Links, we were thrilled to host Eric Schultz, whose career journey and industry insights provide valuable lessons for golf professionals and enthusiasts alike. Eric Schultz's journey and insights provide a wealth of inspiration for anyone in the golf industry. His emphasis on relationships, empathy, and collaboration, combined with his personal anecdotes, make for a compelling and insightful episode. From Humble Beginnings to Prestigious Clubs Eric Schultz's career path is a testament to the unexpected twists that can lead to success. Growing up in Buffalo, NY, with no prior golfing background, Eric initially ventured into various sales and teaching roles. It wasn't until he discovered his passion for the golf industry that his career truly took off. Eric shared how he navigated his way through the golf world, including stints at renowned clubs like Pine Valley, and ultimately found his role as the Director of Golf at Colleton River Club in South Carolina. Eric described his pursuit of a role at Pine Valley where he wasn't actively pursuing the opportunity, but was recommended by the head pro at his club in Florida who had worked at Pine Valley previously. The interview process was informal - he was just told to wear a tie and if he got the job, he'd be the only one interviewing. Pine Valley saw something they liked in him despite his lack of experience.  His story is a reminder that sometimes, the journey to our true calling is filled with diverse experiences that shape who we become. Eric's transition from a non-golfing background to a leadership role in the golf industry illustrates how passion and perseverance can pave the way to achieving one's career aspirations. The Power of Relationships in Golf One of the standout themes from our conversation with Eric was the importance of building and nurturing relationships within the golf industry. Eric emphasized that strong, authentic connections with everyone from superintendents to assistants are crucial for success. At Colleton River Club, Eric has worked diligently to create a warm, supportive environment. He believes in developing his team members and fostering a culture where everyone feels valued, even if they eventually move on to new opportunities. This approach not only enhances team morale but also contributes to a positive and collaborative work atmosphere. Eric focuses on consistency and routines like high performers do. He gives a lot of autonomy to his assistants to make decisions and fail, as long as they learn from it. He tries to understand their goals and enable them to move up in their careers, whether in golf or outside of it. Handling Challenging Course Conditions In a thought-provoking segment, Tyler presented a scenario where members were pressing the superintendent about less-than-ideal course conditions. Eric's advice for handling such situations was grounded in empathy and open communication. He highlighted the importance of understanding the concerns of all stakeholders and working collaboratively to address issues. Eric recommended a problem-solving approach that involves both the golf and agronomy teams, ensuring that solutions are effective and mutually agreeable.  Identify the source of the issues through open communication between golf and agronomy leaders. Clearly explain the reasons behind the problems to members. Develop an action plan and get member buy-in. Invest time to have in-person conversations to turn members into supporters. Soundbytes: "You've got a network of people that you can call on, you have this fraternity of people that you just want to be with and the best of the people that like yourself, you get jazzed up to talk to you you hang up the phone inspired to go to the next thing." 10:37-11:00 "The best professionals inherently have some of the softer skills early on. We can train the hard skills. The best that we hire have the ability to smile and have good soft skills, even if their hard skills are still developing." 33:22-3:50 "The movers and shakers all know each other one way or another. It's all interconnected. The power of three: even if you impact one person, they know three others, and so on. The networking power in this industry is profound." 42:50 - 43:05 Quotes: "Whether I was inspired to stay in it because I kept moving to the next spot, the responsibilities became more, and I spent time with people who I loved and with I loved." "I think there's a lot of laziness around leadership and maybe part of the problem why we have a shortage or went through a period of shortage and people getting enrolled is because we weren't doing a good job encouraging people and nurturing talent." "Building relationships is about finding common ground. Ask about their family, where they went to school. Spending time around the golf shop, asking for a golf lesson, and engaging in the game helps in building better relationships." "The best superintendents and people on the agronomy side that I've seen that network with the golf professionals have some ability to play and fast forward that and say, you know, what does a general Saturday look like? Well, it's mow and go. Well, what does mow and go turn into mow and play with the nine hole, you know, the nine o'clock game and you did that once a month." Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Talent identification as an underappreciated career option, published by CE on May 27, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Ambitious Impact is hiring! Ambitious Impact (AIM), formerly Charity Entrepreneurship (CE), runs training and incubation programs for high-impact career paths. Recently, we have been scaling our work. AIM has developed new programs to support talented individuals in impactful careers beyond founding a charity. These include grantmaking, nonprofit research, and for-profit entrepreneurship. We are currently seeking a Talent and Recruitment Manager (or Director) to help us find and select the most talented people for these programs, helping outstanding individuals put their skills to better use for the world. Talent identification, or vetting as we frequently refer to it within Ambitious Impact, has received little attention as a potentially highly impactful career. For the purposes of this article, we're defining talent identification/vetting as work that takes a recruitment process from the point of application closure to the point of a job offer. This is separate from the marketing or communications work essential in a recruitment process to advertise the role and encourage high-quality candidates to apply. We believe a talented individual taking our Talent and Recruitment Manager position would take a high-impact, high-leverage role. Similar opportunities for impact likely exist at other effective organizations scaling significantly. This article shares our thinking behind this. Why great vetting matters Our internal assessment from the past five years of running our Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program is that the quality of the co-founding team is the best predictor of high-impact charities. As we scale up, one of our biggest challenges is identifying highly talented, value-aligned individuals from thousands of candidates worldwide. The difference in outcomes between a bad and a good hire can be huge, and we think this variation is even more extreme with co-founders. The initial staff of an organization sets the pace, tone, and culture for the long term. As we scale, we must identify outstanding candidates for our new programs, including researchers and for-profit entrepreneurs where we have less track record and precedent to base decisions on. We believe high-quality vetting may be high leverage for organizations like AIM scaling significantly and looking to maintain a strong culture and values in who we hire and why. At small organizations, the leadership team can exert an outsized influence on the organization's culture and processes, stepping in directly to make changes where appropriate. Larger organizations cannot operate like this since there is too much work for leadership to be directly involved in. In these circumstances, effective talent identification is crucial. High-quality vetting involves finding potential new staff who are particularly talented and well-suited to the organization's culture, values, and aims. In this way, the person vetting must clearly and deeply understand what drives the organization's culture while identifying the answers, experiences, and traits a candidate may offer that best correlate with the organization's culture. A vetting manager must develop explicit, testable role and career fit models, pairing these with a deep understanding of what it takes to excel in various career paths. With this knowledge, they can design processes to select the right talent, enabling a team's rapid growth while protecting its core values and approaches. What might make you a great fit for vetting Vetting is more than a technical role. The ideal vetting officer is person-focused, with a strong practical understanding of human psychology and a keen eye for quickly assessing people. While these skills can be enhanced...

In this episode Judith Germain speaks to Kristin Lytle about talent identification and its impact on organisational culture. Key Takeaways Self-awareness and self-regulation are critical skills for leaders to have. Leaders who can recognise when they are discombobulated and take a moment to re-center themselves before interacting with others have a huge impact. Succession planning is still valuable but needs to focus more on developing talent pools rather than detailed individual plans, due to the speed of change today. Trust is built when employees feel they can predict what an organisation will do - keeping commitments to develop and grow employees builds trust. Catch people doing things right and help them see their own talents, don't just focus on the gaps. In this conversation Kristin explains that identifying talent is just the first step - leaders must support and invest in identified talent, even through mistakes, otherwise potential goes wasted. Judith agreed large companies often narrowly define roles instead of developing diverse potential. They agree that an organisation's culture reflects the behaviours it rewards - if problematic actions are tolerated, that sets the standard. Predictability and trust come from following through on commitments. Kristin Lytle is the CEO of Leaders Edge. She is on a mission to help companies and individuals unlock the full potential of their talent. Attacking The Championship

In todays episode we expand on step one of the recruitment process we will be using to identify potential targets for teams in the 2023/24 EFL Championship. Every team has access to the same data, but it seems that some teams are gaining an edge on the competition. Look at two clubs who have successfully attacked and defeated the championship in Brighton and Brentford. They're not traditional powerhouses with unlimited resources, yet they're now knocking on the door of, or already attained European qualification. These are two teams that had a plan, a long term plan to improve incrementally on and off the pitch in order to climb the football ladder. David has a plan, a vision of how teams can structure their recruitment process in order to gain that edge before EVERY team starts to adopt this type of strategy. Brighton and Brentford are two clubs who have benefitted from 'first adopter advantage'. At first they were ridiculed and got eye rolls due to their statistical approach. However, the results in the transfer market, and results on the pitch speak for themselves. The objective of Step 1, Talent Identification, is to act like a filter because there's data collected on 500,000 professional players (approximately 25,000 players for each playing position) worldwide, and there will be approximately 100 metrics measured........ leaving us with 50 million data points to view....... I can feel the glaze of overwhelm crashing over you!! So how can teams turn this sea of stats into usable insights that make a measurable difference on the pitch? You can see why some clubs shy away from it. Even if a club has an analysis department the language they use is not always the same as those who are responsible for getting the team ready for match days. This disconnect, this misunderstanding, this mistrust perhaps can mean that the opportunity for insights are lost. David feels the key is to make a process so simple that it's easy to use daily, easy to understand, and most important of all is able to be tailored to the needs of any club...... of course that means those in leadership roles need to be able to answer the question; 'What do we want?'That's not always as easy as we might think. When options are limitless it can make decision making a more difficult process. In the Talent Identification step we're looking to attain some general metrics that will help us take us from 25,000 players per playing position down to a more manageable 250 that is also appropriate for that specific club. To do this we might look at the financial budget of the club, whether the players are available for transfer, do they play a role that fits their style of play and formation, the age of the player, and perhaps how many minutes they've played that season. These are of course just some examples of the measurable data points that could help us narrow down to a list of 250 potential players....... I hope you enjoy the episode and don't forget that you can follow us on Youtube and X (Formerly Twitter) and join us in Attacking The Championship.

_______________ Obrigado aos mecenas do podcast: Francisco Hermenegildo, Ricardo Evangelista, Henrique Pais João Baltazar, Salvador Cunha, Abilio Silva, Tiago Leite, Carlos Martins, Galaró family, Corto Lemos, Miguel Marques, Nuno Costa, Nuno e Ana, João Ribeiro, Helder Miranda, Pedro Lima Ferreira, Cesar Carpinteiro, Luis Fernambuco, Fernando Nunes, Manuel Canelas, Tiago Gonçalves, Carlos Pires, João Domingues, Hélio Bragança da Silva, Sandra Ferreira , Paulo Encarnação , BFDC, António Mexia Santos, Luís Guido, Bruno Heleno Tomás Costa, João Saro, Daniel Correia, Rita Mateus, António Padilha, Tiago Queiroz, Carmen Camacho, João Nelas, Francisco Fonseca, Rafael Santos, Andreia Esteves, Ana Teresa Mota, ARUNE BHURALAL, Mário Lourenço, RB, Maria Pimentel, Luis, Geoffrey Marcelino, Alberto Alcalde, António Rocha Pinto, Ruben de Bragança, João Vieira dos Santos, David Teixeira Alves, Armindo Martins , Carlos Nobre, Bernardo Vidal Pimentel, António Oliveira, Paulo Barros, Nuno Brites, Lígia Violas, Tiago Sequeira, Zé da Radio, João Morais, André Gamito, Diogo Costa, Pedro Ribeiro, Bernardo Cortez Vasco Sá Pinto, David , Tiago Pires, Mafalda Pratas, Joana Margarida Alves Martins, Luis Marques, João Raimundo, Francisco Arantes, Mariana Barosa, Nuno Gonçalves, Pedro Rebelo, Miguel Palhas, Ricardo Duarte, Duarte , Tomás Félix, Vasco Lima, Francisco Vasconcelos, Telmo , José Oliveira Pratas, Jose Pedroso, João Diogo Silva, Joao Diogo, José Proença, João Crispim, João Pinho , Afonso Martins, Robertt Valente, João Barbosa, Renato Mendes, Maria Francisca Couto, Antonio Albuquerque, Ana Sousa Amorim, Francisco Santos, Lara Luís, Manuel Martins, Macaco Quitado, Paulo Ferreira, Diogo Rombo, Francisco Manuel Reis, Bruno Lamas, Daniel Almeida, Patrícia Esquível , Diogo Silva, Luis Gomes, Cesar Correia, Cristiano Tavares, Pedro Gaspar, Gil Batista Marinho, Maria Oliveira, João Pereira, Rui Vilao, João Ferreira, Wedge, José Losa, Hélder Moreira, André Abrantes, Henrique Vieira, João Farinha, Manuel Botelho da Silva, João Diamantino, Ana Rita Laureano, Pedro L, Nuno Malvar, Joel, Rui Antunes7, Tomás Saraiva, Cloé Leal de Magalhães, Joao Barbosa, paulo matos, Fábio Monteiro, Tiago Stock, Beatriz Bagulho, Pedro Bravo, Antonio Loureiro, Hugo Ramos, Inês Inocêncio, Telmo Gomes, Sérgio Nunes, Tiago Pedroso, Teresa Pimentel, Rita Noronha, miguel farracho, José Fangueiro, Zé, Margarida Correia-Neves, Bruno Pinto Vitorino, João Lopes, Joana Pereirinha, Gonçalo Baptista, Dario Rodrigues, tati lima, Pedro On The Road, Catarina Fonseca, JC Pacheco, Sofia Ferreira, Inês Ribeiro, Miguel Jacinto, Tiago Agostinho, Margarida Costa Almeida, Helena Pinheiro, Rui Martins, Fábio Videira Santos, Tomás Lucena, João Freitas, Ricardo Sousa, RJ, Francisco Seabra Guimarães, Carlos Branco, David Palhota, Carlos Castro, Alexandre Alves, Cláudia Gomes Batista, Ana Leal, Ricardo Trindade, Luís Machado, Andrzej Stuart-Thompson, Diego Goulart, Filipa Portela, Paulo Rafael, Paloma Nunes, Marta Mendonca, Teresa Painho, Duarte Cameirão, Rodrigo Silva, José Alberto Gomes, Joao Gama, Cristina Loureiro, Tiago Gama, Tiago Rodrigues, Miguel Duarte, Ana Cantanhede, Artur Castro Freire, Rui Passos Rocha, Pedro Costa Antunes, Sofia Almeida, Ricardo Andrade Guimarães, Daniel Pais, Miguel Bastos, Luís Santos _______________ Esta conversa foi editada por: Hugo Oliveira _______________ Bio: Nuno Barbosa Morais é um biólogo computacional. Rohit Krishnan (@krishnanrohit), venture capitalist and author of the blog Strange Loop Cannon, joins Erik on this episode. Takeaways:- Many of the people at the top of their fields today say they would never get hired if they were just starting out today. Today's selection process at elite institutions has become more stringent but has dropped the interesting variance that exists at the top of the pyramid. Plenty of people have gamified the selection process. If you're hiring, you want to find the interesting misfits.- Higher ed used to be fantastic but now it is groaning under its scale. There should be more of a focus on job training rather than general liberal education.- Billionaires should be more eccentric and experimental. There aren't enough idiosyncratic billionaires in the world. - It's easier than ever for information to get from one place to another with the rise of the internet but it also means that it's easier than ever for ways to use that information to make money to get from one place to another. This has resulted in the barbell distribution of outcomes that we see these days.- Clustering has important benefits. There's something about bouncing ideas off of other people and egging them on in person that is special, despite the connectivity that the internet has brought.- Hierarchies make it easy to get things done in general, but hard to get any one thing done. - There are many more areas where we are not polarized than where we are polarized these days. Changing someone's mind is a function of time and encouragement and repeated explanations, rather than forcefully convincing someone you are right and they are wrong. Thanks for listening — if you like what you hear, please review us on your favorite podcast platform.Check us out on the web at www.villageglobal.vc or get in touch with us on Twitter @villageglobal.Want to get updates from us?
