Dara Torres drops in on the SwimSwam Podcast to recap her first-year experience as head coach of Boston College. If you followed swimming at any point between the late 1980s and the 2000s, the name Dara Torres likely meant one thing: dominance. While the men's team went 2-4 and the women posted a 2-3 dual meet record, Torres' inaugural season wasn't about win-loss columns—it was about laying the foundation for the future, and that foundation looks rock solid.

Wellness supplements are everywhere these days. But they all involve mixing messy powders, swallowing pills, or consuming high calorie gummies or bars. As well, they all need to be processed through the digestive tract which means they can take hours to kick in and don't give you the effect that you need exactly when you need it. Now, we're excited to share a revolutionary new way to supplement, called Cani-Wellness using the Molecular Spray System. This innovation allows dozens of vitamins, herbal extracts and nutraceuticals to be available in one compact spray. It's like having an entire health food store that fits in your pocket. Just shake and spray. It's ideal for when you're on the go because no water is required. The active ingredients in these sprays are absorbed by the body up to 5 times faster than pills because the pre dissolved ingredients are absorbed by the mucous membranes of the mouth rather than having to travel through the digestive tract. In fact, 90% of nutrients in Cani-Wellness oral sprays are absorbed in less than 30 seconds. We believe this innovation is the world's best way to supplement. And we have a beloved Olympic athlete on our team who agrees. Olympic legend Dara Torres has found the ultimate brand that she not only supports but uses during her training each day, helping her focus, recover after a late night, relax, and get a restful night's sleep. Dara Torres is a 5-time Olympic Veteran, mother, author, speaker and entrepreneur. In 2008, at the age of 41, Dara was the oldest swimmer to ever make the U.S. Olympic team, proving that dreams are attainable at any age. Reaching those dreams, wasn’t always easy. Dara shares with us her struggles with an eating disorder, bullying, and what it took to become a 12-time Olympic medalist. Humble. Transparent. And Kind. Are just some of the words that make Dara another Athlete Doing Good.
Dara Torres, Olympic Medalist and former Florida Gator Swimmer and Diver, joins Paul to talk about her illustrious career. Paul also talks to callers about college sport storylines.
SEC Network will debut its latest SEC Storied documentary “Once Upon a Comeback,” the story of swimming sensation Dara Torres, on Monday, Feb. 22 at 9 p.m. ET. The film’s debut coincides with the SEC Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, with the women’s airing Sunday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. and the men’s airing Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. Dara Torres pushed boundaries for both her gender and age, breaking records and forging new paths for women. However, underneath the success was a relentless mounting pressure to look a certain way. A star swimmer at the University of Florida, Torres won nine SEC individual championships, was named SEC Athlete of the Year in 1988 and earned 28 All-American swimming honors – the maximum possible during a college career – all while living with a severe eating disorder. Bulimic during her time at Florida, Torres speaks about this experience on-camera for the first time in-depth. Her journey is not uncommon, just rarely talked about, and highlights the dangers of competing at the highest levels and pushing the limits, both physically and psychologically. Torres would go on to win 12 Olympic medals over a 25-year span, participating in five Olympic Games. As a veteran swimmer and mother, her 2008 Olympic comeback is legendary, when at age 41, she became the oldest swimmer to win an Olympic medal. Now, she is an important role model for all collegiate and Olympic athletes, having navigated the difficult transition from elite athlete to a successful life after sport. The film was directed by filmmaking duo Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters. “We began our careers in sports television, Nancy at ABC Sports and me at NBC Sports, and followed Dara’s amazing journey through many National & World Swimming Championships and five Olympic games,” said Lax. “We are in awe of her accomplishments, especially in 2008 when she made her third Olympic comeback as a ‘working mom.’ She is a remarkable inspiration to all of us working moms. Being able to handle the pressure and juggle the responsibilities – and to do it all with such poise and perfection is fairytale-like.” Collectively, Lax and Winters’ television and film productions have earned them 16 Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and multiple CASE, Christopher, Cine Golden Eagle, Davey, Gracie, International Monitor, Telly and Sabre Awards. After building illustrious careers at rival networks -- Winters at ABC producing Wide World of Sports and directing soap operas — and Lax at NBC Sports directing, producing and managing the production of over 500 short films & profiles for the Atlanta, Sydney & Salt Lake City Olympic Games -- they fulfilled a lifelong dream of working together by joining forces in 2002. Torres was a 41 year old mother when she won 3 silver medals in the 2008 Games. Our guest today is the most decorated female US Olympic athlete in history. She’s a five-time Olympian, representing the US from the age of just 15 to the age of 41. She is a 12-time Olympic medalist and one of three women with the most Olympic swimming medals. In 2019, she was inducted in the US Olympic Committee Hall of Fame. Dara Torres is a mother, author, speaker, and entrepreneur. Dara is a highly sought after guest, and today she’s on the show to talk about her triumphs as well as the obstacles she’s overcome along her journey. She touches on her experiences with aging, injury, insecurities, eating disorders, and even bullying. As a mentor and a mentee, Dara can teach us all how to be the exception. Dara is the first woman in history to swim in the Olympics past the age of 40. For many athletes, they are focused on the results and the accomplishments that come along with competition. Dara’s experience was different. She was competing to prove to herself and the rest of the people watching that she is capable of performing at the highest level at any age. As a young swimmer, Dara’s biggest influence was another swimmer named Jill Sterkel. She held the record that Dara broke when she was 15. Going into the games, Dara didn’t swim very well. There was discussion for Jill to replace her, which took a toll on Dara’s headspace. Nonetheless, Jill took Dara under her wing and made sure she was taken care of. It’s not about what a person has accomplished to be a mentor, Dara says, it’s about the kind of person they are. Dara’s inspired so many young women and young swimmers with her story. Today, she tries to inspire some of the older crowd. Uplifting middleaged people deserve to be motivated in the same way. Sharing her trials and tribulations as an adult can have an impact on people just as much as her struggles as a young person. Dara shares her battle with bulimia and the mental shifts she made throughout her college career that formed her into the woman she is today. Things You’ll Learn In today’s episode, Dara shares with us how her experiences overcoming injury, insecurities, eating disorders, and bullying as a mentor helped shape her into the incredible mentor she is today. She gives us a window into the life of a high-performing athlete and the mental strength it takes to succeed on the world stage.

Cada uno seguiremos a nuestros equipos y atletas favoritos: Michael Phelps, Contador, Dara Torres, el equipo español de baloncesto, Nadal….Sin duda todos acabaremos atrapados por la “Fiebre Olímpica”Olympic FeverIt’s impossible not to be caught by the “Olympic Fever”. 250 countries, approximately 10,500 athletes, 28 sports and 302 events, it’s going to be tough to keep apart from this summer event. These Olympic Games promise to become one of the most charged in history and China has made a herculean effort to prepare this amazing spectacle. Nevertheless the media have been more worried about political and social issues than for what would happen in competitions. However, I think that “domestic issues” have passed to a second level now that the games have started.Televisions, radios and newspapers all over the world agree about the opening ceremony as “The greatest show the world has ever seen”, it was seen by four billion people and envolved 15,000 people. But, this happened yesterday and today we want to be informed about the results, the medal counts, last news.. Athletes, every four years, seem to go faster, to jump higher and to be stronger breaking impossible records. There are so many olympic sports that it’s not possible to name all of them here and impossible to be up to date with all of them. We will follow our favourite teams and athletes: Michael Phelps, Contador, Dara Torres, the Spanish basket team, Nadal…Indeed we will be caught by the Olympic Fever.http://ssl4you.es/podcast/92-olimpiadas-fiebre-olimpica/
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Twelve-time Olympic Medalist and Author Dara Torres on The Just 2 Choices Show. Dara Torres is arguably the fastest female swimmer in America. She entered her first international swimming competition at age 14 and competed in her first Olympic Games a few years later in 1984. At the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, Dara became the oldest swimmer to compete in the Olympic Games. When she took three silver medals home – including the infamous heartbreaking 50-meter freestyle race where she missed the Gold by 1/100th of a second – America loved her all the more for her astonishing achievement and her good-natured acceptance of the results. In total, Dara has competed in five Olympic Games and has won 12 medals in her entire Olympic career. Her impressive performance in Beijing and her attempt at the 2012 London Olympic Games has inspired many older athletes to consider re-entering competition, including cyclist Lance Armstrong. Aside from her amazing accomplishments in the pool, Dara has talents on dry land as well. A composed commentator, guest host and strong interviewee, she has appeared on such shows as Fox News, ESPN, CNN, Piers Morgan Tonight, Today Show, Good Morning America, Kelly and Regis, and many others. Additionally, Dara was the first female athlete ever to be featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and in 2009, won the ESPY award for “Best Comeback.” To add to Dara's accolades, she was also named one of the “Top Female Athletes of the Decade” by Sports Illustrated Magazine. http://www.just2choices.com

Audio Question from Bee @ 00:14:47 She wants to know if you have any weight loss advice for a type 1 diabetic. ~ In my response I mention Dr. Richard Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution" book, my interview with Daniel Vincent from Triabetes, and Steve Cooksey's website. Testimonial from Cheryl @ 00:28:44 I fell into marathoning by accident and had no idea how to fuel myself and went from 140 to 100 pounds in a few months and I thought it was great since I was running faster and I had a friggin 10-pack. I was also thrilled I stopped having menstrual cycles! *rolllling eyes* Little did I know then (and that uber famous running mag which I was using as my "coach" didn't touch on it that much). Fast forward a few years and I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at 35 years old. I had already stopped running marathons but I was in the military and still doing extreme exercise routines and still not having cycles (and still happy with it because I had no idea it tied into the whole bone density thing!). I had to go through a ton of blood tests, bone tests, various meds and it wasn't till I upped my good fats (ding ding!) and gave myself rest days (imagine MANY years without rest days/rest weeks). I FINALLY pulled myself out of secondary amenorrhea and my bone density started increasing as well since I added in more plyometrics and my body weight is back at about 123 (I'm 5'4"). I no longer have a 10pack, and I no longer care. It's so much tied into being addicted to the social praise/reward for being a female and having a washboard stomach (without drugs), and yet when I finally woke up to the fact that for majority of females, it's NOT that healthy to be constantly super lean. If I hadn't had some doctors to "baby shake" me into realizing the amenorrhea was NOT an awesome thing to have and that it DID tie in to my bone density health -- I might have kept going and eventually being a chick in her 30's who breaks a hip bone falling off a sidewalk curb. I really applaud the fact that you've addressed these kinds of female issues in your podcasts. Audio Question from Bill @ 00:30:56 Wants to do an Ironman 70.3 on April 6 and a Full Marathon on May 26. He is looking for advice around how to structure the swim and the bike training around his marathon training. ~ In my response I mention: MAP, Antioxidants: Lifeshotz or Solar Synergy, Transdermal Magnesium, 110% Compression gear, Phenocane, and Capraflex. Audio Question from Tony @ 00:39:06 He broke his 5th metatarsal (in half) while running about 16 weeks ago. He was on crutches for 10 weeks and a walking cast for 6 weeks and despite that, the bone is still only 70% healed. He is looking for advice on how to get the bone to heal faster/better. ~ In my response, I mention Capraflex and magnesium. Mark asks @ 00:46:40 I'm in a problem hole, and need help! I am 5 weeks out from my first marathon, I've done a bunch of half marathons and 2 seasons racing olympic and sprint distance triathlons. But at 5 weeks out, I have caused a previous ITB injury to flare up and bring my run training to a grinding halt. Its been a week (I've still been riding, swimming and doing gym work, also tried water running and been icing my knee), but ran 10k today, the knee was iffy. If I keep up the aqua jogging and all my other training, am I just setting myself up for creating a larger injury that will cause more problems or is it possible to keep this up and run the marathon? Also, is there any other thing else I should be doing to get myself on track? ~ In my response, I mention www.bulletproofknee.com. I also mention a "run-walk-stretch" protocol from either: Jeff Galloway or Bobby McGee. Dave wrote @ 00:52:31 I recently recovered from a back injury and my physical therapist thought a lot of it was caused by a lack of flexibility, particularly in my hamstrings. At the time I was only able to get to about 45 degrees! I'm better now after several weeks but I still can't get to 90 degrees. I'm a hobbyist triathlete and my lower back is often sore after a long ride or a hilly ride. I got to wondering whether my hamstring flexibility is getting to me on my downstroke. A friend recently noticed that I wobble a little in my seat while pedalling. Coincidence? My PT has me doing compress-relax hamstring stretches against the wall. I was struck by your podcast about flexibility where you said it's only required for the range of motion you need, and also how dynamic beats static. Long story short, I'm wondering if you have recommended dynamic stretches for hamstrings? ~ In my response I mention my Podcast on Resistance Stretching by Dana Torres and the DVD. Dara Torres resistance stretching video: Emily asks @ 00:59:45 On a whim, I bought an interesting plant from my local nursery called Herb Jiaogulan. Brought it home and transplanted it, then did some research... turns out it is Gynostemma Pentaphyllum, and it appears to have many potential benefits: cholesterol reduction, antioxidant, adaptogen just for starters. Do you have any experience or thoughts on making the most of this plant? The nursery suggested adding the fresh leaves to stir-fry, and of course you can make tea from fresh or dried leaves. ~ In my response to Emily, I mention TiaChi. Dara refers to something called resistance training as her 'secret weapon' when it comes to keeping fit. Recently, she released a DVD Resistance Stretching With Dara Torres in collaboration with Steve Sierra and Anne Tierney from Innovative Body Solution that teaches resistance training. In today's featured topic, I interview Anne about Resistance Stretching. My questions include: -What is resistance stretching? -Who would it benefit? -How long is a typical session? -Will it make an athlete “too flexible”? -Would it be best performed before or after a workout? -Can it be used a substitute for a workout? Overall, resistance training is a mild form of exercise that increases flexibility and also prevents injury and it's something that both athletes and non-athletes should add to their daily workout routine. The DVD includes new ways of stretching and also includes strength training, flexibility training and aerobics. You get a total of 17 exercises for the upper and lower body all of which Torres takes you through in 20 minutes. I did it in my living room a couple weeks ago, and it's surprisingly a cardiovascular workout that also includes the flexibility component. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Special Announcements: 1. Just call 1-877-209-9439 and leave a voicemail, leave a Skype voicemail to username "pacificfit", or e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com. Listener Tina asks: Hey Ben, in training for my Ironman I finally decided to try the dreaded ice baths and I was amazed how well I felt the next day. I've tried it by running down to the lake which is close to my home, and standing in up to my hips for 10 minutes. I've also sat in luke warm water in my tub and slowly added cold water up to the big dump of the ice tray from my refrigerator. So my question is, is there a certain temperature that ice baths work better in? If I'm still sore on the second day of a hard weekend, would another ice bath be beneficial? Listener Fitz asks: Ben - how do you feel about paleo/primal diet proponents who advise skipping meals, avoiding carbs, even skipping breakfast? Seems like there's a lot of science behind it (although as a distance runner, I wouldn't skip meals or avoid carbs). Mark Sisson at marksdailyapple.com is big on this. Listener David asks: Question on headaches and working out. One of my clients complains of headaches halfway through the workout. I train him pretty hard, usually circuits with minimum breaks in between sets. He doesn't drink coffee/tea. He keeps caffeine intake to a minimum (under 30 milligrams), and most day avoids all caffinated drinks, including his workout days. He's 30 years old, male in good shape and of average weight with no special conditions, ie no diabetes, hypertension, high lipids, etc.. I'm working to build his upper body strength and improve his core. I think it could have something to do with his breathing technique. But I do watch him and make sure he's exhaling on concentrics and inhaling on eccentrics. So maybe he's not breathing correctly or deep enough. What other possibilities do you think could be causing his headaches and if its with his breathing, do you have breathing tips/techniques? Could be low carbs or lack there of? In my response, I direct David to this breathing article I wrote...and also recommend Topical Magnesium. Listener Mike asks: Question 1: I was hoping you could point me in the right direction on your recommended brands for the suggested 4 supplements (Vit D, Magnesium, Omega 3's, and Greens Multi-Vit). I know not all supplements are created equal. Question 2: Any treatment/ supplement recommendations for 'Jumpers knee'? I'm 32 and developed a severe case playing volleyball a couple years ago and still struggle with it (even after physical therapy and avoiding any activities that cause patella inflammation/ pain). I can run just fine, infact I'm training for the Hood to Coast again this year, but I want to be able to play other sports and jump again -- any suggestions? Listener Lance asks: 1) Are there any other sunscreens worth considering other than the interview subject own product? It doesn't sound like it all that available yet. BTW thanks for the vitamin D question, it was exactly what I was wondering. 2) In Podcast 92, I was puzzled by your fat recommendations. The research I have looked at indicates we need single digit percentages of daily calories from omega 3 and 6 EFAs. Why do you recommend 15-25%? Is there a benefit that outweighs the cardiovascular risk? Listener Josh asks: It's been a mantra in my family that "slow metabolism" is a curse. Is it true that some people struggle with a "slower" metabolism? Or does those people (like me) just eat a little bit (or a lot) more and slowly add to their body fat? I ask because I monitor what I take in, and most days, I get in 1800 calories (I'm 5'10", 190) and I exercise 6 days a week. No diet or meal plan seems to really be able to help me drop my body fat. My physician says my blood tests don't indicate a "slow metabolism", but even his dietary advice doesn't work. Can you help? Second question, much easier: how far in advance do you plan your workouts? How do you anticipate muscles that you're overtraining (and thus avoid overtraining that muscle) when you're planning ahead? Congratulations to Josh, who was nominated as the top question for this week's podcast! Josh will receive a free month of membership to the Body Transformation Club, full access to the Club's secret video page, the life-changing piece of Club mail that I will personally send him each week, and much more. To learn more about the Body Transformation Club, click here. Listener John asks: What's your opinion on V8 juice? The 5.5oz cans are really convenient for eating on the go. Should I be concerned with BPA like most other canned tomato products? Listener Casey asks: I have to work and go to school full time right now and I often lose sleep and can't wind down until very late because of it (not to mention the mass consumption of alcohol which has become my main goal to eliminate).Do you have any suggestions that do not involve quitting my work or school? I cannot afford to quit either, but I know the stress is slowly killing my body. I suffer from heartburn, fatigue, anxiety, high stress, etc. and I am only 21! If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to vent or complain, I just would like a real world solution to what I'm sure is a pretty common issue. Listener Jeff asks: What are the benefits of Sodium Phosphate. Thinking of trying Race Boost from Hammer. Any thoughts? Listener Rich asks: Just a quick question, I have a good diet (helped by your tips and advice) which focuses on the anti inflammatory foods and wondered if you had any further tips on reducing my hay fever symptoms. I can deal with the extra mucous and itchy eyes using topical homeopathic remedies but it is the systemic effect that really kills my performance. I notice a dramatic change in form throughout May, June, July in my running, cycling and rowing times and recover more slowly after a tough session. Listener Chuck asks: I was wondering for what distance should one do a specific carb-load? Obviously for a full or half Ironman, but should I implement like a tapered version for an Olympic distance or is there a certain point where it's just not necessary to do at all? If a shorter load was best, would it be using the same technique you described, just for a shorter period of time? Listener Chris asks: I just got my butt royally kicked this past weekend at the Devil's PunchBowl bike race. I believe that the altitude (3,800ft at the start) had a lot to do with that, as I live and train at sea level. My heart rate was sky rocketing the entire race much higher than it ever had in the past. Do you have any practical advice on how to prepare for 3 days of hard racing at a similar elevation in mid-June? Also, is it possible to improve one's lactate threshold? If so, how might I do so? Listener Ken asks: I am having problems staying asleep. I am going to bed around 10-10:30. I am waking up to go to the bathroom and I am not able to fall back to sleep. Very wide awake after 4-5 hrs. Also, I am drenched in sweat when I wake up. I do not work out before bed. Most of my stuff is done morning or early evening. Is this normal? What can I do about it? My only issue with it seems to be the increased risk of injury...especially with running. How would you suggest keeping the risk of injury low while still going hard? Scott asks: Have you heard of Whole Body Vibration? Thoughts? Is it safe? Chuck asks: Last week I had an impedance test done. I'm sure you know what it is, but they connect electric pads to you ankle and wrist and an electric current is sent between. Based on the time it takes, it measures your body fat, water, cell health, and water in your cells. The problem is, I don't recall what each of these measure, but for someone in great shape and very healthy, some of my ranges we low? Can you talk a little about this and why I may be low? Here were my results: Body fat: 2.9% Resistance: 404.0 ohms Reactance (Xc): 37.8 (I don't have the ranges, but I think this was one of the level she told me was low) Impedance (Z): 406.7 (Impedance (symbol Z) is a measure of the overall opposition of a circuit to current, in other words: how much the circuit impedes the flow of current. It is like resistance, but it also takes into account the effects of capacitance and inductance. Impedance is measured in ohms, symbol) Phase Angle (like overall health of cell): 5.3 degrees. This was low- which is weird--why? Lance Armstrong's is about 12.0 Craig asks: I have found ice baths after a run work for me. However, when it is really hot outside I have trouble getting them cold enough (54-59 degrees). What I do now is run the water and then put 8 trays of ice plus all the ice my ice-maker has made since my last run in the tub. This doesn't get it cold enough. I know that I could buy a bag of ice from the grocery store but this is not very convenient. On the other hand, do you know of something I could buy that would be something I could just keep on hand? In my response to Craig, I mention this Blitz 110% post. Matthew asks: Is there any natural glycolic acid or AHA peels you recommend for mildly acne prone skin? I took your recommendation to eat sardines and I feel that this is helping my skin, but I still could use a good method to help remove dead skin from my sensitive face. Peter asks: Looking for your thoughts on S.A.D. seasonal affective disorder, winter blues, weight gain around holidays, etc... Laura asks: Have you heard of the ARP wave clinic? I have arthritis in my knee and was considering this therapy after exhausting many modalities up to this point. What are your thoughts? David asks: A company named JD Premium has put out a product names Adapt Energy that can be added to water or taken directly to help with energy and concentration. I have heard you talk about the advantages of some adaptogens in past podcasts. Based on the products contents, are these adaptogens? Are the ingredients harmful in any way? In my response to David, I mention this podcast with Roger Drummer. Shawn has a call-in question about cyclocross and how to increase his ability to move up to the next level. Robert asks: I have what I call "congenital inflexibility" I've now been into triathlons for about 2 years, becoming an endurance athlete for the first time in my life, and I'm really enjoying it. However, I do feel that my speed gains are being greatly limited by my inflexibility. For instance, in the swim I cannot stretch my arms straight past my ears. In the bike I am limited in my aero position, etc. I do some limited before and after stretching now, but I also know there are very mixed results in studies in whether stretching before or after exercise is actually helpful (at least in preventing injuries). In addition, I feel that whenever I spend too much effort stretching, attempt yoga, etc I am twice as likely to hurt myself. I am really worried that my inflexibility is going to hold me back, particularly in the swim. Do you think it's possible for someone who is totally inflexible to ever become reasonably flexible? In my response to Robert, I mention Resistance Stretching with Dara Torres. Brock asks: I get quite a lot of bloating and gas about an hour after I do a long or intense swim workout. I assume it is from gulping in too much air while I swim. Is there anyway to work on eliminating this issue? Are there any drills you can recommend that could help with this. It uncomfortable for me... and everyone around me. John asks: I swam 40 X 50 yard laps in an outdoor heated pool today and threw up. I had a piece of toast 1/2 hour before swimming, felt fine. I did not swallow a significant amount of chlorinated water during the swim. I was feeling fit and fine before and during the swim. Any comments? Jon asks: The other day I did some hard 800 meter repeats and I had some foamy sweat below the waist. Have you ever heard of this and what is it? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
