Ever frustrated with turns and just wish you could swim in a straight line? For USA Olympic swimmer Mariah Denigan that is the dream. While the majority of her training still takes place in a pool and she has represented the USA internationally in longer distance pool races, Mariah Denigan has established herself among the best in the world in open water races. Mariah has represented Team USA at the last couple World Championships, including a 6th place finish in 2023 where she surged in the second half of the race and earned an invitation to the Paris Olympics. Dubbed by her coach, legendary Indiana University's Ray Looze, as having a “pain tolerance that's off the charts,” Mariah Denigan is at her best in the critical closing stages of races. For a coach that has developed many Olympic medal winning athletes including the likes of Lilly King, Cody Miller, Annie Lazor, Blake Pieroni, and more - she must be one tough competitor. hree well-known athletes sat down Wednesday morning to offer advice on mental health to 150 local high school students for a Colts “Kick the Stigma” event. Olympic medalist Lilly King, U.S. swimmer Ashley Twichell and Colts Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II joined Colts Vice Chair and Owner Kalen Jackson at the Indiana Farm Bureau Center for the panel.King, who is a two-time Olympian, said she once told friends winning her first gold medal was the worst thing to happen to her. She went on to tell students that although the statement was not true, she felt that way due to her mental health struggle at the time. That struggle is something many athletes experience, even at the high school level, King said.Moore echoed that same sentiment during the panel. He joined the team in 2017, the day after he was cut from the New England Patriots. Since then, he said making sure his mental health is in check has been a priority.Competition swimmer Ashley Twichell told students that everyday practices and a self-care routine are essential to remain healthy in all aspects of life.Knowing some of their favorite athletes experience the same mental health struggles brought the student-athletes a sense of comfort.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Not many swimmers, or athletes for that matter, are willing to speak their mind publicly. Olympic Champion Lilly King, however, has generated headlines for years, and not just based on her insane resume of swimming accomplishments as one of the best breaststrokers of all time. Lilly has spoken openly against performance-enhancing drugs and competitors who have tested positive, unafraid of the spotlight her comments would bring upon her, and the subsequent pressure to perform well. See, Lilly King is a straight shooter, and she thrives in the highest-pressure situations. What might faze others seems to bring out the best in Lilly King. This is one of our favorite conversations ever on the podcast. Enjoy!

We sat down with Lilly King, the newest world champion in the 200 breast. King describes in vivid detail how she realized she had COVID just days after the world trials in Greensboro and subsequently had to take a week out of the pool completely. Throughout most of her career King has had easy speed, but getting back into the water this time it was her endurance that felt the most honed in. Moving through the championships, King found peace with where she was at, taking pride in placing a narrow 4th in the 100 breast and beating 1 competitor in the final of the 50 breast to take 7th. A strange sensation for Lilly, the 200 was where she felt the most confidence in Budapest. King describes her strategy for that final as "I was trying to out-race everybody".

Swimming for Ray Looze at Indiana University, she won the 100 and 200 Breaststroke 4 years in a row at NCAA Championships. She still trains for Ray at IU but she performs for the Cali Condors of the ISL. She is skipping SC World Champs for the ISL this year. Lilly is sponsored by TYR. She wears the TYR Avictor. We sat down with Olympic champion and Breaststroke queen, Lilly King, to discuss the brand new pool in her hometown of Evansville, Indiana and her swimming in the last couple of months. King walks us through her time in ISL this season and how she got back into the swing of racing coming off of the Olympics, as well as what her "off-season" looked like and why she like to stay in the water for the majority of that time. King also describes her experience at the 2020 Olympic Games, where she went into the meet as the defending Olympic champion in the 100 breast and heavy favorite to win gold. King goes into what she felt after winning bronze in that race, then coming off of the surprise loss and earning silver in the 200, her first Olympic medal in that event. We sat down with the breaststroking man who's always in front of the camera, Cody Miller. Cody goes DEEP on the women's 200 breast, revealing what he saw as the difference maker between Olympic champion Tatjana Schoenmaker's prelims/semi swims and her finals swim where she broke the world record. Cody also gives insight into Lilly King's mentality after losing her Olympic title in the 100 breast and heading into the 200 breast, where she went a huge personal best by nearly 1.5 seconds. Sy sê Heyns se prestasie was 'n inspirasie:
Jeff Heggie Daily Success Strategies https://jeffheggie.com/ConfidentAthlete https://mindset.jeffheggie.com/ I have loved watching the Tokyo Olympic Games. As much as I love to watch the athletes compete, I love watching their interviews, their preparation, and interaction with other athletes. One thing that has stood out to me this year is the level of confidence that some of these athletes have. One that I watched closely was American Swimmer, Lilly King. In her interview she talked about her high level of confidence and things she did to intimidate opponents. She has been very successful in her career and was the favorite to win the Gold again this year in the 100m breaststroke. It was a shock to see her place third as her 17-year-old teammate from Anchorage AK took the gold. As we watch these young athletes compete on the world stage, I've often wondered how they deal with the stress and anxiety. On the podium for the women's skateboarding stood three teenagers – 13, 13 and 16. It amazes me. Simon Biles is another one that I have been watching. She's in a league of her own. She is amazing and she knows it. I recently posted a quote from her. She said, “I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I'm the first Simone Biles.” I've been anxious to watch her at these Olympic Games. On Tuesday she shocked the Olympic world when she pulled out of the U.S. team gymnastic finals. She said the emotional toll of the Tokyo Games, not physical injury, prompted her withdrawal. I really like Tim Grover's work and knew that he would post something about Simone. This is what he said on Instagram: Winning sets unreasonable goals and requires you to bear the burden of responsibility for achieving them. That means doing anything and everything possible to get out of the situation you're in, and into position to win. You can pay the price of Winning and succeed, or you can quit, stay where you are, and pay the price of regret. The road to paradise is a two-way street, and just as quickly as you travel to the top, you can slide right back down. In fact, you can pretty much count on it. Winning doesn't let you hang around. It meets you at the parade, cheers the loudest when you get the trophy, and then escorts you out to the parking lot, where the bus that brought you has a new sign with its next destination: Hell. Winning will use every dirty trick in the book – and make up new ones just to entertain itself – to keep you in Hell. It's up to you to find your way out. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Minnesota Twins 6, Detroit Tigers 5 – F/10 Kansas City Royals 4, Chicago White Sox 3 Chicago Cubs 6, Cincinnati Reds 5 Twins 6, Tigers 5 – F/10 – Kepler’s RBI single gives Twins 6-5 win vs Tigers in 10 Max Kepler’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning against All-Star closer Gregory Soto gave the Minnesota Twins a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Soto walked the bases loaded in the ninth before striking out Willians Astudillo on three pitches, finishing him with a 100 mph fastball. Soto had two outs in the 10th before a walk and Kepler’s ninth career game-ending hit. Robbie Grossman’s pinch-hit, two-run homer tied it for the Tigers with one out in the ninth after Twins All-Star closer Taylor Rogers was pulled from the game with a sprained left middle finger. Royals 4, White Sox 3 – Soler hits 2 HRs, again, as Royals beat White Sox 4-3 Jorge Soler hit two home runs for the second straight game and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to six games with a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. Mike Minor (8-8) gave the Royals their fifth quality start in the last six games. He allowed two runs on three hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Minor’s victory in Milwaukee on July 20 started the Royals’ current winning streak. Scott Barlow worked the final two innings and picked up his sixth save. Cubs 6, Reds 5 – Báez hits bases-loaded single in 9th as Cubs top Reds 6-5 Pinch-hitter Javier Báez hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Anthony Rizzo homered in his second straight game for the Cubs. Joey Votto homered for the third time in three games and drove in three runs for Cincinnati, which dropped its second straight and lost for the seventh time in 10 games. Kyle Farmer added a homer as the Reds’ winning streak against Chicago ended at four. Tonight Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs, 8:05 p.m. Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins, 8:10 p.m. 94.9 WSJM/103.7 Cosy-FM 7:50 Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals, 8:10 p.m. MLB – A’s get lefty reliever Chafin from Cubs for 2 minor leaguers The Oakland Athletics fortified their bullpen by acquiring left-hander Andrew Chafin from the Chicago Cubs for two minor leaguers. Chafin was 0-2 with a 2.06 ERA in 43 relief appearances covering 39 1/3 innings for the Cubs this season. The deal was announced following their 6-5 win over Cincinnati and could signal more moves to come from Chicago. The Cubs received outfielder Greg Deichmann and right-hander Daniel Palencia. Oakland is in second place in the AL West and holds the league’s second wild-card spot. The disappointing Cubs are fourth in the NL Central at 50-51 and could be a busy seller before Friday’s trade deadline. NFL – Waiting for Rodgers It’s anyone’s guess as to whether three-time NFL Aaron Rodgers shows up at Green Bay Packers training camp this week. Even the team’s top executive isn’t sure. Packers president/CEO Mark Murphy remains hopeful the quarterback will play for them this season, but says he doesn’t know whether Rodgers will arrive for the start of camp. Murphy’s comments followed an NFL Network report that Rodgers has indicated to people close to him he does plan to play for the Packers this season. ESPN later reported that Rodgers and the Packers were close to an agreement that would include voiding the 2023 season from his contract. The Packers’ camp opens on Wednesday. NFL – Colts Head Coach has COVID despite vaccination Colts coach Frank Reich will miss the start of training camp after testing positive for COVID-19. General manager Chris Ballard says Reich’s test came back late last week and that he has had no symptoms. While Reich is fully vaccinated, Ballard says it is unlikely Reich will return to practice until early next week. NCAA – With eye on SEC, Oklahoma, Texas move toward leaving Big 12 Oklahoma and Texas took the first formal step toward moving to the Southeastern Conference. They notified the Big 12 that they would not be renewing an agreement that binds the league’s members through 2025. The schools sent out a joint statement that made no mention of the SEC and said they intend to honor agreements that give the conference control of the school’s media rights. Those arrangements run concurrent with the Big 12’s television contracts with ESPN and Fox. Texas and Oklahoma have been in discussions with the SEC about joining the league, though neither the two schools nor the powerhouse conference has acknowledged that publicly. MILB – Minor League Baseball – High-A Central Yesterday No games tonight Tonight West Michigan Whitecaps at Great Lakes Loons, 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne Tin Caps at Lansing Lugnuts, 7:05 p.m. South Bend Cubs at Quad Cities River Bandits, 7:30 p.m. Tokyo 2020 – Summer Olympic Games – Games of the XXXII Olympiad Basketball – US women win 50th straight Olympic game over Nigeria A’ja Wilson had 19 points and 13 rebounds in her Olympic debut to help the U.S. beat Nigeria 81-72 in the opener for both teams. The win was the Americans’ 50th consecutive victory in the Olympics dating back to a loss in the semifinals of the 1992 Barcelona Games. Diana Taurasi, who was playing in her first game in nearly a month after suffering a hip injury, has competed in the last 33 of those victories to set a record for most games in the Olympics. Ezinne Kalu scored 16 to lead Nigeria. Swimming – Alaskan swimmer wins gold Alaska, of all places, has an Olympic champion at the pool. Seventeen-year-old Lydia Jacoby gave the United States a victory in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke, knocking off defending champion and teammate Lilly King. Jacoby was the first swimmer from the Arctic state ever to make the U.S. Olympic swimming team. Now she’s heading back to her hometown of Seward, Alaska, with a gold medal. South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker claimed the silver while King settled for bronze. Jacoby’s stunning win salvaged what had been a disappointing morning for the U.S. team, which had only managed a pair of bronzes before the teen came through. Swimming – US streak in 100m backstroke ends For the first time since 1992, the American men have lost a backstroke race at the Olympic pool. Russia swept the top two spots in the 100-meter back, with Evgeny Rylov claiming the gold medal in 51.98 seconds and teammate Kliment Kolesnikov taking the silver in 52.00. Defending Olympic champion Ryan Murphy settled for the bronze in 52.19. Beach Volleyball – Ross/Klineman win 16th straight The American “A-Team” of April Ross and Alix Klineman have guaranteed themselves at least one more beach volleyball match by beating Spain 21-13, 21-16 for their second straight win. With one more game in the preliminaries left, they can do no worse than a three-way tie for first. The deadlock would be broken during a “lucky loser” matchup after the round-robin. Tennis – Naomi Osaka eliminated from Tokyo Olympics tennis tournament Japan’s Naomi Osaka lost to former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of the Olympic women’s tennis tournament. The 42nd-ranked Vondrousova produced a series of drop-shot winners and other crafty shots that drew Osaka out of her comfort zone. Volleyball – US women’s volleyball hands China 2nd straight loss The expected Olympic showdown between the top two women’s volleyball teams in the world turned out to be a one-sided affair. The U.S. women swept defending gold medalist China 29-27, 25-22, 25-21 in a pool-play match that left the Americans at the top of Pool B and the Chinese seeking to win their first set of the tournament after two straight sweeps to open the Games. China was also swept by Turkey in the opener but showed five years ago in Rio de Janeiro how little the pool-play matches can mean after losing three of five of them before rallying to win gold. Gymnastics – Biles tries to lead Team USA to 3rd consecutive gold medal Simone Biles and Team USA seek their third consecutive gold medal in women’s gymnastics in Tuesday’s team final. The Americans trail the Russian Olympic Committee. Biles is set to compete in all five events. In swimming, Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel return to the pool with Ledecky seeking a second straight gold medal in the women’s 200-meter freestyle and a later attempt to win the Olympic debut of the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle. The U.S. women’s soccer team plays its final match in group stage play and the US men’s basketball team plays Iran while seeking its 1st win. Tokyo Olympic flame is the first powered by hydrogen Inspired by the sun, the Tokyo Olympic cauldron is designed to be better for the planet. The flame at Tokyo’s National Stadium and another cauldron burning along the waterfront near Tokyo Bay throughout the games will be sustained in part by hydrogen, the first time the clean fuel source will be used to power an Olympic fire. Previous flames have usually run on propane, although magnesium, gunpowder, resin and olive oil have also been used since the first modern cauldron was lit for the Amsterdam Games in 1928. The torch relay was introduced eight years later for Berlin. Olympic broadcasters curb sexual images of female athletes Each Olympics aims to set the highest level of television standards. The head of broadcasting at the Tokyo Games wants to reach this goal by banishing overly sexualized images of female athletes. A wider Olympic program targets gender equity on the field of play and on screen. One mantra for broadcasters is “sport appeal, not sex appeal.” Olympic Broadcasting Services chief executive Yiannis Exarchos says viewers will no longer see the kind of close-ups on women’s bodies they might have seen at past Olympics. It comes as more female athletes oppose wearing uniforms they believe exploits their sexuality. NBC mum on Chinese complaints about map during ceremony NBC is not responding to complaints from China over how the network depicted the country’s map when its athletes marched in the opening ceremony at the Tokyo Olympics. The Chinese consulate in New York and several social media accounts complained because the map showed by NBC did not depict disputed territories like the island of Taiwan, which China considers a breakaway province. The issue is worth watching since NBC Universal is contracted to broadcast and stream next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing. The consulate general says NBC “harmed the dignity and emotions of the Chinese people.” Softball – Lawrie gets win, Canada beats Mexico 3-2 for softball bronze Canada won its first Olympic medal in softball, taking the bronze with a 3-2 win over Mexico on behind 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief from Danielle Lawrie, the sister of former major leaguer Brett Lawrie. Lawrie is a veteran of Canada’s 2008 Olympic team and the 2009 and ’10 USA college player of the year at the University of Washington. She relieved with runners at the corners and retired Victoria Vidales on a groundout. Lawrie struck out four, fanning Brittany Cervantes to end it. Kelsey Harshman broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Tropical storm to bring rain, wind, waves to northeast Japan An offshore tropical storm brought wind and rain to the Tokyo region and affected some Olympic events Tuesday as it headed toward northeastern Japan. Stormier conditions were forecast north of the capital in advance of Nepartak making landfall around midday Wednesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the tropical storm has winds of 44 mph that will weaken before landfall. Storm and high wave warnings were issued for the coastal areas of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Super-express train services were to be suspended from Tuesday evening possibly until Wednesday morning.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SWIMSWAM'S TOP 5 SWIMS OF THE 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES: DAY 3 #5 – M 200 Free: Rising star and 16-year-old David Popovici drops a huge 1:44.68 in his first Olympic final, just missing a medal at 4th place and breaking the European Jr record #4 – M 200 Free: The British are coming, with Tom Dean and Duncan Scott taking 1-2 in the 200 free, both dropping 1:44.2's to top the rest of the field by nearly half a second #3 – W 100 Breast: 17-year-old Lydia Jacoby keeps her momentum rolling from Olympic Trials, getting her hand on the wall first to hit Gold, while defending champ Lilly King earns Bronze behind her #2 – M 100 Back: Evgeny Rylov breaks a European record en route to gold (51.98) and a 1-2 Russian finish as his countryman Kliment Kilosnikov finishes right behind him at 52.0 for silver #1 – W 100 back: This highly anticipated showdown did not disappoint, and once again Australia took control as Kaylee McKeown moved ahead of the field with 15m to go and touched first at 57.47, the #2 performance ever and just .02 behind her own world record BELLY FLOP OF THE DAY: Men's 200 Fly It was disappointing to see 14 men go 1:55 or slower in the semis, with #2 being 1:54.9. With Kristof Milak going the easiest looking 1:52 that has ever been swum, we would have thought the rest of the world might have been able to catch up a bit. But the real belly flop was Chad le Clos' 31.8 final 50, which was not only entertaining (and painful) to watch, but surprisingly effective, with the fly-and-die swim netting him the 3rd seed. le Clos could easily turn that belly flop into a medal today. HOT TOPIC OF THE DAY: Will USA Vets Show Up? We've seen USA youngsters firing in Tokyo just as we did in Omaha, and I'm not saying that the Vets aren't swimming well. They just aren't getting their hands on the wall like we're used to seeing them do and it worries me as an American. But as Mel notes, it's early in the meet, and USA is used to being in situations like this and staying resilient through the latter half of big meets like this. What up y'all? In 2016, Lilly King took the world by storm speaking out against athletes cheating in the Olympics and backed it up, winning gold in the 100M Breaststroke. Since then, she has been nearly unbeatable as she heads to Tokyo looking to add to her medal count. I talked to her about the impact COVID had on her training for the Olympics, not being afraid to say what she thinks, how much money she would have made with NIL and a whole lot more. Plus, golf is a hard sport.
The 2021 Olympic team visited with the media on Thursday from their training camp in Hawaii to chat about the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. Regan Smith, Katie Ledecky, and Lilly King discuss topics such as being a teenager on the Olympic team, growing together as Team USA, and not having McDonald's in the Olympic village. An Olympic athlete's career defining performance may last just seconds, but before and after it lie hours of logistics, warmups, and waiting in “ready rooms.” While they might sound tedious, those moments are often full of team-building, mind games and obstacles that come to define the athlete experience and actually contribute, in no small part, to the golden outcomes. Feel the energy of the aquatics ready-room with 2-time gold medalist Lilly King and hear about other defining moments unseen, from Kerri Walsh Jennings' porta potty mishaps to Chase Kalisz's video game rivalries and Brooke Raboutou's explanation of isolation rooms for climbing events. Ahmed Fareed tells the story of how Josy Barthel's unexpected win threw a wrench into a very customary post-win moment. Join host Lauren Shehadi for Season 2 of NBC Sports' The Podium.

Olympic and World Champion Lilly King was SwimSwam’s 2020 U.S. Swimmer of the Year because the global pandemic did not slow her down. King crushed her competition over ISL’s second season representing the Cali Condors. At USA Swimming’s most recent Pro Swim Series in San Antonio King swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke, but she was edged by Emily Escobedo at the Richmond Pro Swim. I have a feeling King would’ve swum faster had she been racing head-to-head with Escobedo. Emily Escobedo - 100 breast - 1:07.11 Lilly King - 100 breast - 1:07.14 Emily Escobedo - 200 breast - 2:23.46 Lilly King - 100 breast - 2:25.83 WAY TOO EARLY 2021 SWIMMING PREDICTIONS I can’t pretend to doubt King—not even a tiny bit. King dominates the field in the 100 breast at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, inching close to her personal best at 1:04.3. We sat down with Emily Escobedo, the breaststroking machine that has been on fire this past year. Escobedo had a successful season in the ISL Budapest Bubble, helping a rebuilt New York Breakers team to a semi-final appearance. Less than a month after that, Escobedo suited up in practice and came within .2 of a lifetime best in the 200-yard breaststroke. But she wasn't done there. At the January Pro Swim in Richmond, she topped the field in both the 100 (1:07.11) and 200 (2:23.46) breast, going even faster than the likes of Lilly King, who competed in San Antonio. Escobedo talks about all of these swims as well as her breakout into the pro swimming scene, making the national team in 2018 after not expecting to. Escobedo walks us through the process of trying to make things work as a pro swimmer without having a ton of resources readily available to her at that time. Lilly King could have swam for any school in the country, but the Evansville prodigy chose to stay close to home and attend IU. Lucky for us, as she went on to dominate her opponents and destroy the NCAA record books, becoming a 4 x All-American and one of the greatest collegiate swimmers of all-time. Along the way, Lilly won two gold medals at the Olympics in Rio, got Tweeted at by Samuel L. Jackson, and swam the the 50m and 100m breaststroke faster than any woman in the recorded history of the world. Confident, funny and a total bad ass, Lilly King is everything you want in a Hoosier hero, and she isn't even close to being done. Hope you’ve had a great week. Have you been watching the Olympics? How about Evansville’s Lilly King, huh? Aren’t the Olympics great, but they’re also a little weird, right? I mean there are some really strange games in the Olympics. Synchronized diving has to be the strangest to me. I couldn't tell you his many flips one guy did. Looked like 17. Much less if 2 guys did the same amount. What's the deal with giving them points for being the same???How about just being awesome??? In Olympics they scrutinized down to the tiniest level. They zoom in and use super slo-mo and say, "oh, wow! that gymnast took an extra step. That's gonna cost her!" This issue is a very specific issue that Paul deals with in chapter 11. It's a specific issue in a particular city in a particular culture... Immediately Paul zooms out. Paul says, let’s get a good look at where we all sit in relationship with the Lord. Now, I’m going to be honest with you, this passage is hard. It’s a pretty convoluted passage, Paul makes several arguments from several different sides, but he doesn’t devote the amount of material to this that he has on other issues. I think it speaks to the fact that this issue was pretty low on the list of priorities for this letter, however Paul does tackle it and so will we. Part of the problem is that is so very specific to the situation in Corinth, a situation that we are not totally sure about. We know a lot about Corinth and the Greco-Roman culture during this time, however we don’t know much about this particular issue. Hopefully we’ll learn a few guiding principles that Paul was attempting to teach them in this- This isn’t a issue that we deal with specifically, but the issue of gender distinction is one that quite applicable today. Let's read these 16 verse together. Apparently, there was some contention in the Corinth church about women who were serving and leading in the church and what they were wearing or not wearing on their heads. It seems that in Corinthian culture it was customary for women to wear some type of covering, veil, or headdress and women in the church at Corinth were not wearing these, specifically some women who were praying and prophesying in the church services. That immediately brings me to my first point. Now Free in Christ, men and women are unified to serve Christ.Women were praying and prophesying in the church! Unfortunately what often gets lost in this passage is the vital role that women were serving in the church. This was a big deal that there were women not just in attendance but praying and prophesying. This may not seem like something noteworthy to us today, so let me give you a few contrast to help us appreciate this. Contrast this with a woman’s participation in the Jewish Temple. At the Jewish Temple there was a Women’s Court, it was the place that women were to stay except for when they were offering sacrifices. They were not allowed to proceed any further. They didn’t worship with their husbands, but rather had to stand back. They were not allowed to read the law in the synagogue. When they recited the Schema at Synagogue the women were not to speak. They were not allowed to become disciples or students of a Rabbis and follow him. They had no access to religious education except through what their husbands passed along to them at home. Then comes along Jesus. Jesus has woman followers who travel alongside. Jesus has woman followers who were prostitutes before they came to know Jesus’ message of grace and forgiveness. In Jesus’ teaching he often used women as examples of morality. Now in the church that worships Jesus, women are not only gathering to worship alongside of their husbands and sons, they are praying and prophesying in these gatherings. Before they hadn’t even been allowed to recite the schema along with everyone else. Now they were being given special revelations from God, God was speaking through them. Contrast their participation to their place in the pagan temples. In the pagan temples women played a larger role, because they were employed as temple prostitutes. The pagans believed that sex gave glimpses into the divine and that sex could a be a religious observance, so woman were employed or even enslaved to work in the sex trade at the pagan temples. How sad that the one place that women had a role to play, that role was to be objects of sexual gratification. This is not what scripture intended. In the creation account, scripture tells us that God man and woman in His image. Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Women are created in the image of God. They have value and worth because they are created in God’s image, not because they are objects of sexual desire… So in a culture that was either religiously traditionalist and strict in oppression of women OR pagan in objectifying and demoralizing women, the church of Jesus Christ was quite radical and I’m sure to many women it was a breath of fresh air. The gospel of Jesus is one that is to everyone that believes. Black or White. Rich or Poor. Jew or Gentile. Male or Female. Young or Old.Though unified in Christ, men and women are unique. So in the Corinthian church women are serving. They are praying. They are even being given the gift of prophesying. Sometimes that looked like teaching, other times is looked like foretelling what was going to happen or telling of some unknown truth… So women have this new found freedom in Christ. They have this new opportunity serve in vital and important ways. So they said, if we have these opportunities, if we’ve been given equal footing with the men before the Lord, we don’t have to keep wearing these stupid veils or coverings! And they were tossing them aside and no longer wearing them. This is where the issue arises. Not in that the women are praying in prophesying but in what they are wearing, or in this case what they are “not wearing” when they do. And here Paul does have an issue. So he says, lets zoom out and look at the big picture. God has saved us and we are all under him, he is over us all, protecting us, redeeming us, and leading us. Then there is Christ. We have access to God because of Christ. So Christ is above us and He gives us access to God the Father. And God still expects men to lead and for women to be submissive. Now here in this passage we don’t have a defense of the traditionalist oppression of women because Paul equates the relationship between man and woman to the relationship between God the Father and Jesus the Son. We talked about last Sunday night that God the Father and God the Son are both infinite in their power and knowledge and majesty. Now men you will not find a passage in the Bible that talks of your authority, but rather what you find are passages that speak of your responsibility. In fact in this passage the only mention of the word authority is in the verse saying that a woman ought to have power over her head. Scripture doesn’t give men greater authority as much as it gives them greater responsibility. Manhood is about responsibility. Manhood is not about fast cars and big trucks. Manhood is not sleeping around. Manhood is not drinking your buddies under the table. Manhood is not about proving you're tough in a fight. Manhood is about taking responsibility. If you don't take responsibility for yourself and your family, you might have everything culture equates with manhood but you're just a boy. I know plenty of males who drive fast cars and big trucks, sleep around, drink like fish, fight like an animal, and they are nothing but a boy who’s 30 years old. Men are called to lead because men are tasked with responsibility. Let’s go back to creation. When God created Adam from the very beginning, he gave him a job to do. When Adam and Eve broke the only rule in the garden of Eden, who ate first? Eve did. God knew that. But who did God come to hold accountable? He came calling Adam’s name. Husband, problems in your home? God’s gonna come calling your name. Problems with your kids? God’s gonna come calling your name… So Paul has zoomed out and said, lets remember that though male and female have been freed to serve Christ, though we are unified, we have unique roles to fulfill. We have unique callings. So he says, women you have been freed from your sin and brokenness by the grace of Christ, but you haven’t been saved to become men. You’ve been saved to be forgiven, grace filled, redeemed, blood bought women. Women were given greater freedom and worth in Christ, but not by being made like men, but by being forgiven and restored. Women are not redeemed by becoming like men, but they are just as redeemed and worthy as men. Paul’s big point here is that We have all been made new, but we have not been made identical In the next chapter in verse 17 Paul would get into the fact that the church is like a body and that each part has a different shape and a different function and in the whole body were an eye, there would be no hearing. If the whole body were a hand, there would be no walking… Now stick with me here- here’s the application. Paul said because the Lord has made us all different and forgiven us all and made us new and we are still different from one another, let’s not hide that fact. Let’s not blur the line here. Let’s not edge out the distinctions. In Corinth, the cultural designation for male and female was pretty clear and Paul is saying that just as it would be a shame for a man to lead worship looking like a woman, it’s shame for a woman to serve in the church looking like a man. Let the men be men and the women be women. May we celebrate that we are unified despite our distinctions. You know what I love about our church? I love that there are small business owners and factory workers and stay at home moms and men and women in corporate leadership here. I love that there are people covered in tattoos and people who would faint if they looked at a tattoo needle. I love that there are people who have spent considerable amounts of time behind bars and people who have never gotten a speeding ticket…. and people everywhere in between. This morning we are unified in Christ though we are unique. You see, Christ has removed what separates us but not what sets us apart. On the issue of race, people will often say, I don’t see color, I only see people. I get what they are trying to say, but I want to respond- that must be boring. God sees color and he loves them all. God sees gender and socioeconomic status and age and background, and he loves us all. Today’s politically correct culture wants to remove all distinctions, even gender. God kept all those distinctions in place because His love and grace are mighty enough to wash right over them. God loves us where we are and makes us new, but he doesn’t erase the lines that make us unique, just the ones that make us broken. Imagine that you are a potter. You create a piece of pottery. It’s unique. It’s got sleek lines that make the pottery really standout. After you’ve got the clay where you want it, you see that it’t developed a crack or gap in the clay near the bottom, so you fix it. You may even have to start all over, smashing down the clay to reshape it, but you’re not removing the lines that made it unique, those will remain, you’re fixing the brokenness. You’re making it whole and complete. You’re God given gender, race, ethnicity, or hair color is not your problem. It’s the brokenness of you heart. Look back at verse 1, Paul says follow me as I follow Christ. Paul doesn’t say be like me, or be me, he says follow me as I follow Christ. Paul says, my goal is not to make you like me, but follow me so far as I lead you toward Jesus. This morning, you don’t need to look more like me, you need Jesus. You don’t need to be more like me, you need Jesus. Though distinct, men and women are dependent upon one another. Paul closes out the passage saying that men were created first and woman was created out of the rib of man, but it is through woman that man continues to exist. In other words, one can not be without the other. We are different and we depend on one another. We are able to depend on one another because of those distinctions. There’s a purpose in our peculiarity. Our distinctions are not reason to demean one another, rather they are reasons to appreciate one another. It may be that you are here today and you feel like there is no one else in the room like you. You might feel that your family, your background, your brokenness, or your shape makes you different from the rest of us and you feel alone. God sees all of that and He says, "Great! I've been waiting to redeem someone just like you! I've been looking forward to pouring my love over someone just like you!" Our church sees you and says, "Great! We've been looking for an opportunity to love someone just like you! Welcome!" According to the article on Lilly King in the Courier and Press, when she made the Olympic Team she was asked if you do well, what’s something your hometown could do to celebrate. She said, I’d love to lead the parade at the fall festival. You know what’s great about that, it’s so uniquely Evansville. Evansville couldn’t do a ticker tape parade because we don’t have enough high rises, but we do have the fall festival and no one else does… God has made us different and there’s purpose and beauty in it.
