ove LA Magazine? I don't miss an issue. How about Orange Coast, Pasadena, and SoCal Magazines for those folks living there? Well, the brains behind all of them is President and Publisher Christopher Gialanella, and I'm thrilled to welcome him to our shows today. Chris is from Livingston, New Jersey, and when I found that out, the two of us couldn't stop chatting about it because I went to the Livingston Mall all the time as a kid, shopping at Spencer's and all kinds of stores we both loved. After working in PR in New York, Chris made his way to LA, and quickly rose within the ranks of publishing, working for Modern Luxury and LA Confidential. And who doesn't get these magazines in their mailboxes, oohing and aahing at the gorgeous home and fashion spreads on the inside. Well, that's Chris' vision, too. And these days, we can't go anywhere without seeing Chris on the red carpet, including at the Oscars this year, and just about anywhere that's relevant in SoCal, you'll find Chris front and center. And he's a master at branding, too. We'll talk about that. We will also talk about the future of magazines and how they're pivoting to online, like most things. And it's profitable. Also, Chris is of ITALIAN descent, and we will discuss the Italian influences in his early life and today. Please join my #DeborahKobyltLIVE, #LittleItalyPodcast and #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast on all video and audio platforms, and please invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here. @christophergia @lamag @orangecoastmag @pasadenamag

Juan has an MA in social entrepreneurship from Pepperdine University. From this episode: "I think when we allow people in their communities to find their solution, they want that solution; they want to figure it out. And you can make change faster by infusing resources, or as you said, being that conduit that facilitator exponentially. And I think people get the whole concept here a little confused, social responsibility, what does that look like, community-based activities." -Dr. T"For me, it's about having listeners understand that I think we have the opportunity to change the world. And it's our responsibility to find how we're spending our time and spending our money to drive that and make that change. And I think it's what we'll see in the next several years; this social enterprise movement has become at the forefront of how we engage as consumers and how we want to engage with companies. And I believe we will see some of the best innovations from Orange County or Southern California that will impact the world. Episode 96: The list of 29 Recession Stars includes the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Central Orange Coast Foundation, an endowment for the clubs. Robert Santana is the CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs while also running their foundation. The Clubs themselves did well during the recession but were already too large in 2008 to be part of my study of Recession Stars. They continued to grow like a juggernaut after the recession. The foundation was the Recession Star and the only one of its kind. It grew substantially during the recession, helping both organizations grow. The foundation went from $142,000 in 2008 to $463,000 in 2012. By 2018 it grew to just over $1 million. That is a 725% growth building an endowment for the clubs. When you hear Robert speak, you can see why they had such growth. I was able to host Robert as a speaker at our conference on leadership in 2019, rebroadcast for you here.
My guest in this episode is Ki Ki Jenny Moe - a student at Orange Coast college in California. Jenny talks about - the college application process - tuition fees as an international student - the importance of continuous learning and keeping an open mind - human biases during conflict situations

Amy Purdy has lived an incredible life. She grew up with the love of Nature, health wellness and travel. She was also a passionate snowboarder. At 19, her life took a detour. After experiencing flu-like symptoms, Amy was rushed to the hospital in a state of septic shock. When she entered into the hospital she was given less than a 2% chance of survival, put on life support and placed into a coma. After multiple blood transfusions, and the removal of her ruptured spleen, doctors diagnosed Amy with Meningococcal Meningitis, a vaccine preventable bacterial infection. Due to the lack of circulation she had suffered, doctors had to amputate her legs below the knee. She later received a donated kidney from her father a week before her 21st birthday. After going through this life-altering experience, Amy challenged herself to move on with her life and attain goals that even those who have both legs struggle to achieve. She is one of the top ranked adaptive snowboarders in the world, the 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist and is currently the only double-leg amputee competing in snowboarding at the world-class level. Amy’s creativity, positive outlook and her never-give-up attitude have opened doors to many other opportunities, including being featured in a Madonna music video, a lead actress role in an award-winning independent film and multiple creative modeling projects including a photo shoot with musician and artist Nikki Sixx where her legs were custom made from steel to look like ice picks. Amy has evolved into a powerful inspirational and motivational speaker who has been seen by millions of people and invited to share her story to audiences around the world. Amy’s TED x Orange Coast talk, “Living Beyond Limits” is the number one recommended video by TED x OC to incoming TED speakers formulating their own presentations. Amy’s story and images have been featured in numerous national and international publications, and in 2012 she and her longtime boyfriend, Daniel Gale, raced around the world on CBS’s The Amazing Race. Created in 2005, AAS is a non-profit organization that helps those with permanent disabilities get involved in action sports. AAS has partnered with ESPN and runs “adaptive” action sport competitions at the summer and winter ESPN X Games.
