Dan & Manny welcome back the director of The Orange Years & This is GWAR, Scott Barber, to talk about the Kickstarter for his new project Game Changers, a docu series about the videogames that changed everything! Scott talks about what he's been up to since the last time we had him on to discuss his documentary The Orange Years, he tells us about his new project with Phil Moore (host of Nick Arcade) called Game Changers, why he thinks this is the perfect timing for a docu series like Game Changers, some of his favorite nostalgic videogames, his obsession with the Nintendo Power Glove, how kids are coming back to retro games in a big way, and he shares a cautionary tale about being an indie filmmaker that we feel ALL indie artists need to hear. HELP FUND GAME CHANGERS!!! Scott produced and co-directed The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story - a documentary chronicling the rise of the Nickelodeon network throughout the 80s and 90s. The film is currently available on Amazon Prime VIdeo, Apple TV, and most places you can buy and rent streaming movies. He also directed This Is GWAR, a documentary about the infamous art collective/performance art/monster band, currently on AMC+, Shudder, and for rent on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and more. He is currently working on a new show called Game Changers, with Phil Moore of Nick Arcade! Some Episode Notes Game Changers Kickstarter! The Orange Years (Movie 2018) 40:

Currently, Scott and team are crowdfunding the project through a Kickstarter campaign and that can be found here:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gamechangersseries/game-changers-the-stories-behind-your-favorite-video-games/

Nickelodeon -- or NICK -- has been entertaining kids and annoying their parents since at least the 1980s. Over the years, the preeminent kid-focused channel has produced dozens of original series, ranging from cartoons to variety shows to comedies to game shows. Now the panelists of the Great Pop Culture Debate want to relive the Orange Years and dodge the slime buckets as we attempt to determine: What IS the Best Nickelodeon Original Series? Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Amma Marfo, Andrea Guerrero, Curtis Creekmore, and Joelle Boedecker as they discuss 16 of the most legendary series from Nickelodeon's past and present. This one gets VERY emotional. NOTE: We started working on this episode long before the recent revelations regarding behind-the-scenes traumas at Nickelodeon. Therefore, we do not discuss or reference any of those issues. We stand with the accusers unequivocally, and any lauding of Nickelodeon or its creative teams should be seen as solely relating to the quality of the programming. In part 1 of our discourse on Nickelodeon we talk about the founding of the network & the so called "Orange Years" (1983-1996) while trying to gain a broader understanding of everything that happened at Nickelodeon. From shows like You Can't Do That on Television and the introduction of slime and competition shows like Double Dare to scripted series like Salute Your Shorts, Pete & Pete, Clarissa Explains it All & Are You Afraid of the Dark? In the 1980's and early 90's Nickelodeon was a cornerstone for kids programming but how did a network which basically started as public broadcasting with the intent of making children feel seen become a safe haven for some of the most predatory people in the entertainment industry? (content warning: this episode does not discuss the documentary Quiet on Set or the allegations made in that series (that starts in part 2) but abuse is still referenced as well as predatory practices of adults in the entertainment industry)Sources:The Orange Years (documentary)Slimed! Oh rapture! The orange years are still intact! Our Gakoids on Patreon chose us to give our reviews of both "The Orange Years" and "Happy Happy Joy Joy". With all of the controversy surrounding Nickelodeon due to the documentary "Quiet On Set", it's been delightful to go back and discuss what was good about the network and why we fell in love with it from the beginning! To get more of an in-depth discussion about the making of both documentaries, the creators joined us for an interview. Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood of "Happy Happy Joy Joy" and Scott Barber of "The Orange Years" gives us an inside look into what it takes to make a documentary! Join us inside the studio to find reasons why we should still celebrate Nickelodeon! Have a seat with us on the Orange Couch for some exclusive content! Scott is also the director of the acclaimed Nickelodeon TV network documentary, The Orange Years, currently streaming on Hulu. This week, the ladies are full of ALL the theories about the children's mega-hit, Gabby's Dollhouse. . What is Gabby's REAL story? Where exactly is she? Who's in charge? And most importantly - are your kids safe watching this show? Our ThoughtsThe show reminds Laura and Kara of Blue's Clues in that the characters interact with the audience by asking questions and through meaningful pauses. Gabby's solitary living situation reminds Kara and Laura of the disturbing late 80's drama Flowers in the Attic where a family of young children are locked in an attic for a stretch. Kara may have read this book when she was in middle school and Laura definitely read the Dollanganger Children series. We also have a feline problem. Cats won't paint your nails, clothe you or bake you cupcakes. Mamas, don't let your kids dress your cats or they're gonna get scratched. Laura can't help but feel as if she's sitting through a toy commercial during each episode. Having recently watched The Orange Years, about Nickelodeon choosing its programs to sell toys to kids in the early 90s, Laura senses a setup. Should they watch it?Kara: YesLaura: NoWe still think you should watch Ada Twist, Scientist instead. Side ConversationsIf Laura had a dollhouse, it would be made of cheese. One room for fondue, a holey one for swiss, brie, queso, and a fancy charcuterie room. There would even be a cheesy bellboy to take your bags at the door. Kara took her son and a friend to a meet and greet with Last Kids on Earth author Max Brallier. She recaps the time that she and her mother met comedy legend Carrot Top. Laura met acting great Ron Perlman while he was wrapping up Sons of Anarchy and made him smile with a couple jokes. Cameras and 90's TV! That's what we're talking about this week. The show starts off with a quick update about the Canon R5C (proving I was RIGHT about something I brought up last week)! I play clips from an interview by CineD, so please check out the full video if you want the full context: https://youtu.be/t4mQJ9oB1AQFrom there I dive into some heavy nostalgia that was brought up by a documentary about Nickelodeon called "The Orange Years" and how I think the philosophy behind the network in its earlier years is extremely relevant in today's world of YouTube and content creation. •Here's the Marques Brownlee interview from Colin and Samir that I mentioned
Today Scott Barber (director of The Orange Years doc) is back for a very fun review of Salute Your Shorts! It was such a treat to have a nostalgia expert join me for this review and get an insider's look at camp Anawanna! For me this is one of the most memorable episodes of the series and we even get to talk about censorship and licensing issues that surround Nickelodeon, and Paramount and Viacom at large. We cover Season 1 Episode 7 The Radio Call in Contest. Sponge discovers a radio trivia contest hosted by DJ Giant Jim, but may need his friends' help to win the $1000 prize. Pride month is here, Avi (they/them) is here to snatch crowns and take names! HBO’s Genera+ion has rocked our world with authentic queer youth televsion, and Avi has the inside scoop through their connection to the series and how this groundbreaking work was created. The Hulu documentary The Orange Years about the history of Nickelodeon has us feeling all the nostalgia feels. The Italian film market has a giant mis-step and blatant transphobia in their casting for the dubbed voice of Laverne Cox’s character in Promising Young Woman. Then James is serving us history realness with his deep dive into the history of Ball Culture - which dates back further than you might think, it’s significance in the queer community, and influence on music, fashion, and mainstream. Avi the evergrowing voiceover actor has some great revelations about the growing presence of queer characters in animation. We sat down and watched the amazing documentary on the Golden Years of Nickelodeon called The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story, now on Hulu. These incredible years on Nick took place from it's very start to the late 90s. We discuss all Nicks first live shows to it's first Cartoon series. What was most interesting of Nickelodeon was that it was a TV channel for kids and teens. Their goal was to make content that would relate with the kids of the time and it definitely worked! Enjoy this mini history lesson on one of the greatest TV channels of the 90s and keep it trendy!
