Dorothy Oliver, owner and operator of the general store in rural Panola, Ala., joined forces with a local county commissioner in 2021 to get as many people as she could to get vaccinated from COVID-19 in her small black community. Dorothy's efforts included diligently communicating with residents and educating them about the disease, which resulted in a nearly 99 percent vaccination rate among the community's adults in a state with one of the lowest vaccination rates in the U.S.In this interview, Dorothy talks about the work she did before and after the vaccine became available as well as the recognition she's received publicly, which includes a personal address by Dr. Anthony Fauci. Her story was also featured in a 2021 short documentary by The New Yorker magazine called The Panola Project.View PDF TranscriptIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. We're continuing our (virtual) Sundance 2022 coverage with the cast and crew from the short films The Panola Project, Hallelujah, and Fck Em Right Back. This is a particularly fun group of conversations that bring inspiration, heart, and the strength to say "Fuck You"! Rachael DeCruz and Jeremy S. Levine (who wrote, directed, and produced The Panola Project) share the story of local hero Dorothy Oliver, who sets out to vaccinate her small town of Panola, Alabama (pop. 350) in a state where less than half of the population is vaccinated. They discuss meeting Dorothy, how shooting this film helped them deal with the stress of the pandemic, and filling the score with music from the great Jermaine "Mainframe" Fletcher. In the film Hallelujah, we meet two siblings who are stuck with having to take care of their nephew and niece after the death of their brother. The writer/director Victor Gabriel and producer Duran Jones explain their own real life connection to the story, and finally settle the great Cornflakes debate (they're serious about their cereal). With Fck Em Right Back, we're introduced to the fabulous DDm, a queer Black Baltimore rapper who has to outsmart his horrible boss to avoid getting fired after accidentally eating an edible. We were joined by director Harris Doran, producer Doris Casap, and our star, DDm, to discuss how DDm's real life inspired the film, and why it was important to make a fun story with a greater message. You can follow director Rachael DeCruz on IG & Twitter & FBYou can follow director Jeremy S. This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 30th, 2021. A new poll shows Americans are worried about the Delta variant…just not worried enough to do anything about it. The Ipsos poll shows more than 70% are at least somewhat concerned about it, but only 55% are wearing a mask all or sometimes when they leave the house and only 34% social distanced in the past week. And even if there was a new spike in cases, respondents were mostly unlikely to say they'd start taking precautions again. The National Institute of Health said two blood serum studies show India's Covaxin vaccine effectively neutralizes both Alpha and Delta variants of coronavirus. Covaxin has been administered to roughly 25 million people so far in India and elsewhere. It works using a disabled form of the virus that can't replicate but still stimulates the immune system to make antibodies against it. New testing also shows Moderna's vaccine to be only slightly less effective against the Delta variant than others. The vaccine provoked an antibody response against all the variants tested, but it was far more effective against the Delta variant than the Beta variant first identified in South Africa. Bad timing. Daily cases have been going up for nine days in Tokyo, triggering fears of a possible fifth wave. And that's happening less than a month before the city is due to host the Olympics. The minister overseeing Japan's pandemic response said they won't hesitate to call a new state of emergency if necessary. Being in charge of the pandemic response in any country is a nightmare. Try doing it in North Korea. Kim Jong Un publicly berated senior ruling party officials for their failures in the fight against the coronavirus, saying it created a “huge crisis.” He criticized them for incompetence, irresponsibility and passiveness. And yet, North Korea still claims not to have found a single coronavirus infection. In the United States cases were down 15%, deaths are down 23%, and hospitalizations are down 13% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18. There are now 4,900,140 active cases in the United States. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Reeves, TX. Campbell, VA. Panola, TX. Titus, TX. Houston, TX. Hopewell, VA. Red River, TX. Harrison, TX. And Dallas, MO. There have been 604,436 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related. The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Michigan 32. Texas and Colorado 20. Georgia 19. Arizona 17. California 16. Pennsylvania 12. Mississippi 11. And New York and Virginia 10. The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that's had at least one dose: Vermont at 73.8%, Massachusetts at 70.2%, and Hawaii at 69.7%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi unchanged at 35.9%, Louisiana at 38%, and Wyoming unchanged at 39%. The percentage of the U.S. that's been fully vaccinated is 46.3%. The top 5 countries for full vaccinations per capita are Gibraltar, Malta, Seychelles, Cayman Islands, and San Marino. The bottom five are Lesotho, South Sudan, Syria, Zambia, and Liberia. Globally, cases were down 4% and deaths down 30% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 26. There are now 11,449,854 active cases around the world. The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 64,903. India 45,699. Colombia 25,880. Argentina 24,065. And Russia 20,616. There have now been 3,936,463 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 29th, 2021.The World Health Organization says get your masks back on. Even if you're fully vaccinated, mask up and go back to social distancing. But CDC guidance is that “fully vaccinated people can resume activities without a mask or physically distancing.” Plus, experts say vaccines authorized in the U.S. remain largely effective against the Delta variant. So again, we have public health bureaucracies thoroughly confusing the public. The world continues to believe travel causes COVID-19 outbreaks. Hong Kong is banning all passenger flights from the U.K., which they've classified as high risk because of Delta variant spread. And Portugal has also put the U.K. on its red list for travel, even though Portugal itself has been reporting the highest number of daily new cases since February. In Germany, the share of COVID-19 cases caused by the Delta variant more than doubled within a week, accounting for 36% of infections. They expect it to become the dominant strain by summer. In Germany, about 35% of the population is fully vaccinated. Experts in Australia describe their situation as the most dangerous stage of the pandemic since the earliest days. Sydney and Darwin are locked down. Perth made masks compulsory for three days and warned a lockdown could be coming. And Brisbane and Canberra have or will soon make masks compulsory. Here's a positive story. 45-year-old Mary McCarthy of New Zealand works in a hospital kitchen, so she was tested in October 2020. It was painful, and the discomfort lasted weeks. A few doctors told her she had a chronic sinus condition, which she believed because she'd always had pain in her nose and shortness of breath. But the pain was so bad one day she decided to go to one more emergency room where doctors found…a toy that had been stuck up her nose for 37 years. A tiddlywink to be exact. In the United States cases were down 15%, deaths are down 16%, and hospitalizations are down 14% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18. There are now 4,929,192 active cases in the United States. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Reeves, TX. This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 28th, 2021.The delta variant continues to turn back the clock. Moscow had a record 144 deaths in 24 hours yesterday. Germany declared Portugal a “virus-variant zone”, banning most arrivals from that country and is trying to ban British travelers from all EU countries regardless of vaccination status. Greece warned strict local lockdowns may be needed over the summer in some areas. Indonesia recorded a new high in daily cases, with similar spikes in Thailand and Malaysia. Sydney, Australia began a two-week lockdown. New Zealand suspended its quarantine-free travel corridor with Australia. Israel has reimposed mask requirements in enclosed public places. And in Africa, where vaccinations have been minimal, cases have jumped 25% over the last week. How can the U.S. get its vaccination numbers up now that they've stalled out? The White House thinks it's something called the “movable middle.” That's people who are unvaccinated, but still might be able to be convinced. And they're using political campaign tactics to identify, reach, and win over those people. What the White House won't do is promise we'll ever know for sure the real origin of the pandemic that's killed at least 3.9 million people. They say their review may not produce a definitive explanation. Although knowing the origin is critical to avoiding or preparing for future such catastrophes, governments, the media, and science organizations could leave us with no answers at all.Far more states have banned proof-of-vaccination policies than have created programs for people to digitally show their vaccination status. Hawaii is the only state enforcing some version of a vaccine passport. And only California, New York, and Louisiana have offered residents a way to voluntarily show proof of vaccination.Nothing's ever good enough. NASA reports the COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdowns got rid of a lot of pollution around the world…but not all of it. They cite tiny airborne particles called PM2.5 as something that didn't change much. These are produced by both human activity and natural processes and are associated with several effects on health. In the United States cases were down 18%, deaths are down 15%, and hospitalizations are down 15% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18. After a month of only targeting specific counties, the Governor issues a state wide mask mandate. Then, with more than 40 districts set to start classes this week, state officials set guidelines for schools.Plus, after a Southern Remedy Health Minute, how an all-woman research lab is helping understand COVID-19.Segment 1:Mississippi is now under a statewide mask mandate and all residents are required to wear masks when in public for the next two weeks. Governor Tate Reeves issued a statewide mask mandate yesterday following weeks of targeted county orders. Reeves says he believes that approach was effective, paving the way for the statewide order. The mandate comes as the state puts its worst month of the cornavirus pandemic in its rear view mirror. Cases of COVID-19 more than doubled in July and hospitalizations and ICU utilization rose to its highest levels. State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs says the best way to mitigate transmission of the virus is for everyone to "chill out".Segment 2:As Mississippi closes in on leading the nation in coronavirus cases per capita, the governorannounces he's ordering schools in eight counties to delay reopening. Governor Tate Reeves issued an executive order requiring students in 7th thru 12th grade in eight counties he calls hotspots to delay opening until at least Monday, August 17. The counties are Bolivar, Coahoma, Forrest, Hinds, George, Panola, Sunflower and Washington. Reeves says a majority of school districts do not plan to begin classes until next week or later. He points to this as fact as part of his reasoning to only issue targeted delays. Segment 3:Southern Remedy Health MinuteSegment 4:Scientific research is not widely recognized as a women's game. Only 30 percent of the world's science researchers are women, while in the U.S. the figure is only 28 percent for those in science and engineering: two of the four pieces that add up to the education curriculum known as STEM. But in a lab at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the percentage is 100: six out of six, including three women who are African American – another rarity. We speak with lab director Dr. Tanya Robinson and principal investigator Dr. Sarah Glover. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week, Bursts spoke with Ben Turk about the August 19th call out for solidarity with prisoners.  The Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, a project of the Industrial Workers of the World (or IWW) syndicalist labor union is one body organizing the inside and outside actions, and Ben is a member.  Ben's also affiliated with Lucasville Amnesty Last year was a huge time for radical organizing around the U.S.  Prisoners from around the country participated in the September 9th national prisoner strike, the first of it's size and scope that we've seen.  This event mobilized individual prisoners and also sprang from groups like the Free Alabama Movement and it's sister pushes in other carceral states, Anarchist Black Cross chapters, the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, or IWOC, of the Industrial Workers of the World labor union and also by just lots of unaffiliated prisoners.  Now, we have what could be called a hard Law and Disorder administration in the White House talking about increasing funding and support for cops, further militarizing the border and terrorizing residents, reviving the 1980's style war on drugs and other repressive actions.  In this context, it feels necessary for those who have a different vision of the world to push back and keep pushing as we were under Obama, under Bush & before. More on IWOC can be found at https://incarceratedworkers.org and more about public call for the strike can be found at IAmWeUbuntu.com Soooooo many Announcements But first, we have a bunch of announcements we wanted to share with you.  If you have things you want announced on the show, send us an email and we may include it! Kevin "Rashid" Johnson in transit An update on the case of Kevin "Rashid" Johnson from http://rashidmod.com : "Supporters have received word that Kevin “Rashid” Johnson was picked up by Virginia officials and removed from Clements Unit on Thursday, June 23rd. He is no longer being held by Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Thanks to so many people phoning Virginia Interstate Compact Supervisor Terry Glenn, we have found out that Rashid is now in Florida at a “reception facility”. However, we do not know where that is, if he can receive mail there, or where he will end up. We will keep you informed as we find out more, and in the meantime will be asking people to phone Glenn back on Monday. Rashid is Minister of Defense of the New Afrikan Black Panther Party (Prison Chapter); he is a Virginia prisoner organizer and revolutionary communist. As a result of his organizing he has been repeatedly transferred out of state, under a setup called the “Interstate Compact” which is used to remove rebellious prisoners and exile them to locations where they have no friends, support, etc. For the past four years Rashid has been held in Texas, where he has been beaten, threatened, had his property confiscated,  been set up on bogus infractions, and more — nonetheless, he used his time there to forge connections with other prisoners and to write a series of powerful exposés about violence, medical neglect, abuse, and murder in the Texas prison system. Transfers can be opportunities for prison officials to arrange for violence and abuse. Rashid was beaten when he was first brought to Texas, and lost much of his property at the time. Outside supporters and people concerned about prisoners' rights and basic human dignity need to make sure this does not happen again!" Kevin "Rashid" Johnson's support site suggests people call the following prison employee to support Rashid, and there's a simple script for calls available at http://rashidmod.com: Mr. Terry Glenn, Interstate Compact Supervisor Virginia Department of Corrections P.O. Box 26963 Richmond, VA 23261-6963 Phone: (804) 887-7866 Fax: (804) 674-3595 QTLUG & VPNs When this show is over, consider bringing your linux or soon-to-be linux laptop, tablet, phone or whatever device over to Firestorm for the QTLUG.  A linux and open source software enthusiasts' meetup. QTLUG meets monthly and can be contacted at qtlug@tuta.io .  Today, June 25th at 3:30pm EST there'll be a VPN clinic, where attendees will be helped to set up Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, on their devices.  Little to no experience necessary! Self-Protection Class Today at 4 to 6pm, and every Sunday, in Haw Creek Park at 40 Avon Rd in Asheville there will be a self-protection class taught by folks at Mountain Forge.  This class is informed by Combat Systema and other tendencies. The Institute for Advanced Troublemaking, which is "a small collective of long time anarchist organizers seeking to create a lasting movement education hub in the Northeast of the so-called US", is hosting an anarchist summer camp which will be held August 11th – 18th in Worcester, MA this year. Some information about the group from their website "The I.A.T. aims to raise collective capacity to target our enemies at the systemic level with effective direct action and campaign work. As Trump's presidency spurs a swell of anarchist organizing and renewed interest in anti-state anti capitalist perspectives, we want to escalate by building skills in direct action, creating movement infrastructure, and community organizing for new anarchists. We also want to bring experienced organizers together to innovate strategies and tactics for our contemporary context. Rather than an activism 101, our intention is to cultivate deeper understanding and praxis of anarchist organizing among people who are already doing some of that work." The main idea is to build on the social and political potential of events like conferences and bookfairs to expand what is possible in this upcoming era in which it feels increasingly vital to have a vibrant and adaptive anarchist praxis. You can see more information about this event at https://advancedtroublemaking.wordpress.com/ which will include a three part presentation by some past interviewees about Burn Down The American Plantation!
