In this captivating episode, we are honored to welcome back two remarkable individuals, Karen Darke and Dr. Jeffrey Gladden, as they unite to embark on an extraordinary journey. Karen, a Paralympic gold medalist and intrepid adventurer, defies limitations with her awe-inspiring exploits across seven continents, despite being paralyzed from the chest down. Joining her is Dr. Gladden, a distinguished interventional cardiologist, founder of Gladden Longevity, esteemed host of the Gladden Longevity Podcast, and author of the groundbreaking book "100 is the New 30." Together, they ignite inspiration and resilience, offering a profound glimpse into the power of the human spirit.
What is healthy energy? Join Jeffrey Gladden and Karen Darke in this episode of Gladden Longevity. Karen Darkes started her working life as a geologist in the Bolivian Andes, researching gold, but a life changing accident left her paralyzed from the chest down. She moved from being a ‘rock-doctor' to exploring both outside and within. She loves discovering and finding ways to align her mind, body, and spirit to do extraordinary things. This has led her to ski across icecaps, kayak at extreme latitudes of the planet, and handcycle the world's biggest mountain ranges and longest rivers. She believes we create results and happiness from the inside out. Utilizing our thoughts – the language of our mind, and our emotions – the language of our body, we can create health and freedom. She believes that with desire, awareness, resources, and permission to unleash who we truly want to be, anything is possible. This episode discusses how ability is a state of mind, not a state of body, how creating the right environment, which includes better narratives for ourselves, is key, and how our body wants to heal if we can give it the optimal conditions. Wouldn't it be amazing or WIBA is a phrase coined by Karen Darke and she uses it to dream up adventures and possible outcomes for her life. As promised on the weekend show, here is the recording with Karen Darke from our 2020 event Reasons and Results. The talk was titled wouldn't it be amazing and explores Karen's process with mindsets and motivation. So who is Karen Darke. A google search will tell your she is a British Adventurer, she is a Paralympic Cyclist, Para-triathlete, Explorer and Author. In her youth Karen trained as a Geologist and was a crazy mountain climber with no fear of heights. Until at 23 she had a serious fall and was paralysed from the chest down. The path of her life changed at the moment. While the route was not a straight line it turned her into the adventurer she is today, she has skied, and cycled on all continents and is he proud owner of Gold Medal from the Rio Olympics. Our conversation explores the path of her Olympic journey and so much more. In the show she is planning an adventure in to Arctic circle and I know she completed that journey over Christmas 2022. Have you ever thought wouldn't it be cool if? Or wouldn't it be fantastic or even incredible? These are statements of possibility; they are the precursor to a dream or goal. On this show, I am exploring the power of allowing the mind to wonder and open up to possibilities by using a simple question and following it through. I speak to many people throughout my week, and one thing that stands out is how we have become blocked by the process of life. Try it with your friends, and ask about their dreams. They might have one or two, but most will shrug that aside or brush it off as silly. We have lost the ability to really wonder and explore crazy possibility. Wouldn't it be cool if, is the precursor to a dream or goal. Scanning my bookshelf for inspiration this week, I picked up the book by Michael Neill, “Creating the impossible” it is a 90-day process to get dreams out of the head and into reality. It's been on the shelf for a few years, I have read part one, but part 2 is like one of those courses you buy and never action. That is not entirely true; I have dibbed in and out a few times but have yet to give it my full attention. The book uses the three principles, a philosophy that speaks to me, but is hard to describe. I have wanted to do a podcast on the subject many times, but I don't have the words. In part 2 of the book, the day 1 exercise is making a list of wouldn't it be cool? That reminded me of Karen Darke and our conversation before her poles of possibility project. She has this phrase. Wouldn't it be awesome? She has been on the show once and was a guest at one of our events. The link to her podcast is here The wouldn't list exercise is so worth a go; you never know what you might discover. This week, Taylor talks to "modern day alchemist", Karen Darke, a learning and development, mind-set and heart-set coach, who specialises in helping others to find their "inner gold". Karen talks about the concept of inner gold and what it means to her, and how dedication, hard work and a positive mind-set can lead us to any form of success we can dream of. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes we limit ourselves, mentally, far too much. When we have passion, and are dedicated to working hard, there really are no limits to what we can achieve. We can never get anywhere in life unless we begin the journey. The first step to achieving success is to start moving towards it. Goals that seem unreachable can push us to bettering ourselves. Challenge shows us what we're truly capable of. Synchronicity and serendipity come as a result of mental and spiritual focus. Manifestation is the result of this focus. Karen Darke tells me about being injured aged 21 in a mountain climbing accident and how she overcame her fear of heights following this accident to eventually climb El Capitan, as a paraplegic using just her arms. She shares with me her story from first riding a handcycle to becoming a Paralympic champion in Rio in 2016, helped, along with a lot of training, motivation and hard work, by an understanding of how to train her brain and reframe negative thoughts in order to manifest a positive outcome. She tells me about her trip when she cross-country skied across the Greenland ice cap where the challenge lay not only in the physical exertion for a month, but in managing her disability under such extreme conditions. She credits being part of a team with a common objective as a huge part of what makes each adventure particularly special.Karen has done a lot of work in personal development and brain training and shared some fascinating insights about how to combat negative self-talk and achieve goals. She works as a transformational coach and, alongside training for the next paralympic games, is passionate about helping others remove blocks to success and reaching their potential through helping them train their brains. The concept of post-traumatic growth, the amazing human growth that we get through going through the tough stuff. We're all on different journeys. And we all have the highs and lows. And without that fire of inspiration that we get from each other that ripple effect on each other. And that's why we change each other and support each other and help each other on our journey. When you really put your energy and your effort into something specific and focus there that what is possible. Winning doesn't mean the destination. It doesn't mean an endpoint winning. It means striving and struggling. Those journeys when it gets tough and we keep going. Karen Darke is an adventurer and Paralympian handcyclist. It is fortunate that Karen has what she describes as “an adventurous gene”, as life in a wheelchair is full of the unexpected...
A “sliding doors moment” is how Karen Darke MBE describes the climbing fall that paralysed her from the chest down, aged 21. I wanted to know if she thinks she would have achieved everything she has achieved if she had just decided to climb back down that day when it started to get hard. Instead, she fell off a sea cliff and into a completely different life, one she says she feels fortunate to have lived. It's almost impossible to put into words how impressive the comeback from that accident was. From intensive care to going back to finish her Geology PhD in Aberdeen, to completing the London Marathon in a matter of years, quickly followed by handbiking across the Himalayas. She is a two-time World Champion paratriathlete, has kayaked 1200 miles from Vancouver to Alaska, is a silver medal paracyclist in London 2012 and a gold medal winner in Rio 2016. All being well, she will be competing in Tokyo in 2021 just as she turns 50. She has sit skied across 600km in Greenland, handcycled the length of the Japanese archipelago and climbed El Capitan by pulling herself up the rope – 4000 pull ups, in case you're interested! We discuss in length her belief that “what if?” should be replaced with “what if I don't take this opportunity?”, our shared belief that you can have an adventure wherever you are if you have the right attitude and beliefs. She shares her journey to visit a spirit surgeon in Brazil, where she witnessed things her scientific mind found almost impossible to comprehend and with that the expansion of her mind into how we are capable of so much more than we think we are.She now runs transformational coaching, works with social enterprises and inspires people to inspire each other, something she truly believes we can all do.Her latest adventure, Quest 79, has taken her into a whole new realm of expeditions on the 7 continents. The aim to encourage people to find their own personal challenges and rise to meet them. She is also raising funds for The Spinal Injuries Association and the project will culminate with a trip to Antarctica in Jan 2022 – the 7th and final continent. Her unwavering belief that everyone can find their “inner gold” is motivating and, dare I say it, inspiring – it's not a word she likes to be used in conjunction with her, but it's nigh on impossible not to mention it in the same sentence as her name.I could go on, the list of adventures and achievements is almost endless, but you'll need to listen and then devour her books; If You Fall, Boundless and Quest 79 to find out more about her physical, mental and emotional journeys. They are all available on her website www.karendarke.com as is the opportunity to contact her about being on the incredible transformational adventures she is putting together, as mentioned in the ingerview, and to donate https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/karen-darkeYou can follow Karen on IG on @handbikedarke and on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/karenquest79
Scroll down for Contact details and/or Links regarding this Podcast Support this Podcast I first met Karen Darke ten years ago when I was a marketing advisor on a contract with a local enterprise company. The meeting was about her book, and I was told she would be in a wheelchair. I called and made an appointment to meet at her house. When I arrived there was no answer. Having parked on the drive, I could see the garage door was open, so I walked down the drive to see if she was around. I heard a noise behind me and there was a chirpy “hello”. I turned to see a mud-splattered woman on a low hand bike. “Been waiting long? I’ve been out on the hills” she said, as she parked the bike in the garage and lifted herself into a waiting wheelchair. Since that first meeting, I have followed her journey to becoming an Olympic Silver Medallist in London and then on to the Gold in Rio. Our paths crossed again this year when she was a speaker at Reasons and Results. Karen is a modern-day ‘Alchemist’: an adventurer, athlete, speaker and author, Karen’s purpose is about inspiring and impacting, about turning challenge into an opportunity, turning ‘mud’ into ‘gold’. Her career started as a Geologist researching gold in the Bolivian Andes; however, a life-changing accident that left her paralysed led her away from being a ‘rock-doctor’ to winning Paralympic Gold in the sport of Paralympic hand-cycling in Rio 2016. Like all journeys, it was not a straight line. She has experienced some extreme lows on the roller-coaster of life and knows how trauma, stress and life events can lead to fear, pain and under-performance. Karen was always the adventurer; that was what caused the accident that put her on this path. However, she does not let her disability define or stop her desire to push the boundary of what is possible. That desire has also created some highs, exploring and extending the limits of possibility physically, mentally and emotionally. She has skied across icecaps, kayaked at extreme latitudes of the planet, and hand-cycled over the world’s biggest mountains. The Gold in Rio was the 79th medal for Britain, and 79 being the elemental number for gold led to Karen creating Quest 79: Find Your Inner Gold. The project had Karen cycling 7 continents in 9 iconic rides, raising £79K for Spinal Injuries and encouraging people to step out of their comfort zones and discover passion, purpose or ability: their ‘inner gold’. Karen views life as an adventure, and she embraces all its experiences as opportunities to learn and grow. I hope you enjoy the conversation with Karen Darke —- You can connect with Karen through her website:- https://www.karendarke.com/ Or on social media:- Twitter Facebook Linkedin Instagram —- As we come to the end of November, my US friends are about to celebrate Thanksgiving and then they will join the rest of us in the frenzy of activity and utter frustration of trying to think of a suitable gift for Great Aunt Edna, who nobody ever sees except on this one auspicious day of the year. However this year it is unlikely that Great Aunt Edna will be allowed out of the closet! At least if she lives in the UK where we have guidelines on how many households can get together for Christmas. I am sure it was not an easy decision for those in power, knowing full well that putting Christmas on hold or restricting who and how many can meet is going to be painful. It must also be hard knowing that whatever they do will cause a surge in COVID cases in January. The truth is Christmas will be different this year, regardless of the COVID rules. Personally, my Christmas has evolved many times with the changes in relationships, children growing up and parents or relatives passing. Each change has meant finding new meaning and inspiration for the festive season. Having just finished an event about Spirituality, my wife and I realized we have something that could enable you to create a unique Christmas filled with empowerment to face whatever 2021 brings. Are you ready to create a new way of celebrating Christmas? Something that can be personal to you or shared with friends and family? Something sacred and special that adds meaning to your life throughout the year ahead? This is the “Sacred Christmas” Adventure. Christmas doesn’t have to be about frenzied shopping, over-eating and blobbing out in front of TV watching meaningless re-runs. How would you feel about Christmas if it were an annual opportunity to give thanks for the highs and lows of the year just gone, and reveal the wisdom you need to prepare you for whatever the year ahead throws your way. It all starts with the sharing of our family rituals, how we put meaning into the Christmas story and how you could create your own traditions to bring deeper meaning to this festive season. Paralympic hand cyclist Karen Darke was just 21 when she set off on a climbing trip that would change her life forever. Leading a climb on a sea cliff outside Aberdeen, she fell as the last bit of secured protection came away. Three days later, she woke up in intensive care to the news she’d broken her neck and back, paralysing her from the waist down.In this episode, Rob Pope chats to Karen about her climbing accident and the achievements that followed it – from hand cycling across the Himalayas on a specially made tandem and spending a month in minus 30°C temperatures crossing Greenland on skies, to the highs and lows of Paralympic training, and a punishing schedule that took her to London and Rio...Karen also reveals how she was forced to confront her fears and past trauma head-on when she agreed to climb the revered and unforgiving sheer granite behemoth of El Capitan in Yosemite, California. Twenty metres up and petrified, Karen shares the mental process she used to overcome her fear and take control of her mind, as she physically took on the equivalent of 4,000 pull-ups to scale the kilometre-high sheer granite rock face.Listen to all episodes and discover more about How to Be Superhuman at http://redbull.com/superhuman

Karen Darke has been a hero of mine for years. Paralympic athlete, gold medal winner, adventurer, author, hypnotherapist and student of all things sports psychology and therapy. 26 years after the accident on sea cliffs in Aberdeen that paralysed Karen from the chest down, she has climbed El Capitan, sit-skied across Greenland, won a gold in the Rio Paralympics and taken herself off on adventure after adventure. I caught her just after finishing the Camino de Santiago and World Championships, where she lost her place on the British Cycling team. We talked about her experience at Rio, her vast knowledge of sports psychology and brain training, getting injured in the immediate weeks before, the highs and lows of her decade of competing on the team, investing in learning, becoming a teacher and her memories of the accident that paralysed her, the grieving, acceptance and gratitude processes she's navigated since. process of grief and acceptance and her experience of visiting a spirit guide healer in Brazil. Karen's approach to life inspires me even more after speaking to her; not because she manages to pull off adventures and expeditions with paralysis, but rather her curiosity and fascination with exploring new corners of her mind and a life of learning.
Winner of this 2018's prestigious BBC/RGS dream journey award is Paralympian Karen Darke who rides along the length of Australia's Murray River on hand-cycle Fresh from competing in the para-triathlon at this year's Commonwealth Games, Rio gold medallist Karen Darke heads for Australia's Snowy Mountains and the source of the 'Mighty' River Murray. On hand-cycle she takes a very personal journey down along its 2000 miles from source to sea. She reflects on the challenges facing the river as it flows through a drought stricken landscape and she also sees the river as a metaphor for her own fragility- Karen is paralysed from the chest downwards - as she contemplates the end of her athletic career. Burnt out by the pressure she's experienced in pushing herself to achieve, this cycle journey alongside the powerful and vulnerable Murray River makes her more aware than ever of her own vulnerability. Can something be learned from the river and it’s people about how to maintain the ability to flow and flourish whilst still delivering? Produced by Neil McCarthy. First broadcast on 12 October, 2018.
Karen Darke, MBE is nothing short of legendary. What she has achieved with her life after becoming paralysed from the chest down at age 21 is extraordinary. Her wild streak and love of adventure drove her to cross-country ski across the Greenland ice-cap, kayak for 3 months from Vancouver to Alaska, and traverse multiple countries via handcycle. She is gold medal winning Paralympian, author and sought after speaker who leaves audiences energized and wanting more.

Karen Darke was a keen runner, climber and orienteer when she fell off a cliff and became paralysed from the chest down at age 21. However, this life-changing accident did not quell her passion for adventure. With the help of friends and in a large part thanks to her creativity and perseverance, Karen discovered that most things are still possible, and has since led an extraordinary life. Karen has taken on some epic adventures that include climbing El Capitan in Yosemite, handbiking in the Himalayas and a ski traverse of Greenland. In addition to all of that Karen is also a full-time athlete with the British Para-Cycling Team. She was a silver-medallist in the London 2012 Paralympics and became Paralympic Champion in the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Here she tells her incredible story.
When Karen Darke was 10 years old, she decided she would climb all 3000ft of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. She did so nearly 25 decades years later, even though she has been in a wheelchair since a rock climbing accident at the age of 21. She spent five days hoisting herself up the rockface and spent the nights on ledges in the cliff. This is just one example of extraordinary bravery and perseverance by Karen, who became Paralympic Champion in hand-cycling at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. She says “Life has taught me the importance of holding tight to belief, and never, ever giving up.” I invited her onto the show to share more about her amazing attitude to life, and what we can all learn from her about resilience, perseverance and possibility.
