Hey team, welcome to the latest episode of Accidental Business Owners. The premise of the show is that last year Seamus and I became fulltime business owners. We left our 9-5s to go all in on the podcast - and the other businesses we built off the back of it – and thought it would be interesting to document our journey.Last year we also started working with a business and mindset coach Di Foster, who you might remember as a B2B guest, and quickly realized she was the perfect foil to help us work through all the highs and lows of running a business. In this episode, business coach Di Foster doesn't hold back — grilling Steve on what it actually means to lead a business. From setting proper targets, stepping fully into the CEO role, and owning the hard calls — Di pushes Steve to get clear on what's working… and what isn't.It's honest, uncomfortable, and full of lessons for anyone building something of their own.Hope you enjoy.Accidental Business Owners is sponsored by IcehouseIcehouse is a community for kiwis wanting to take their business to the next level and we're thrilled to announce we'll be involved in their Ignite 25 Growth Summit in May. They've got an epic list of speakers involved for the summit, which is at the Viaduct Event Centre, including Sir John Key, Sir Wayne Smith and Chelsea Lane. A major summit to discuss global efforts to tackle malnutrition has kicked off in Paris. The meeting comes as international humanitarian organisations face a funding crisis sparked by the Trump administration halting a majority of the US's foreign aid programmes. Plus, Canada's prime minister says the United States is no longer a reliable partner in trade, as governments around the world weigh responses to Donald Trump's 25 percent tariffs on cars.

Dr Haddad argues that, while policymakers and public health leaders are currently managing a range of urgent priorities, delivering good nutrition must be a foundational component of domestic budgets and development cooperation funding. At a time of great food insecurity, he highlights how nutrition stakeholders will need to do more to make the case as to why it is in the interest of non-nutrition stakeholders to agree to tackle malnutrition in the developed and developing world, with examples from climate, the private sector, and international financial institutions. Dr Haddad's speech is timely, as the 2025 Paris Nutrition for Growth Summit will focus on the critical need for sustained investment in nutrition. About the Speaker: Dr Lawrence Haddad is the Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and has held this position since 2016. In 2020 he chaired Action Track 1 of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit: Ensuring Access to Safe and Nutritious Food for All. Dr Haddad is the co-founder of the Standing Together for Nutrition, a response to the COVID-19 crisis, and is one of the drivers behind the Initiative on Climate and Nutrition (ICAN). Prior to GAIN, he was lead author of the Global Nutrition Report, Director of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), and Director of the Food Consumption and Nutrition Division at IFPRI. He was made a World Food Prize Laureate in 2018 and was awarded a CMG in the 2023 UK Honours List for his “services to international nutrition, food and agriculture”.

In addition to a presentation of the report's key findings and recommendations by IFPRI's leading researchers in diets and nutrition, a distinguished panel of European and country partner policy makers, and representatives of multilateral institutions will discuss the report. There are two trains of thought on the best way to sell gym/personal training memberships. On the one hand, some people believe in collecting as much money as possible, even if it means giving a discount on the memberships. On the other hand, we have the recurring subscription model where you have some money coming in from your base memberships every month. In our considered opinion, the recurring revenue model is the only way to grow your business and increase your profitability.Building up your recurring revenues to be higher than your base operating expenses and growing the gap between these two is the surest way to have a thriving business. If you go the other way and cannibalize your recurring revenues, you will have months where you can barely cover your base expenses. This is not good for your business as it keeps you in that state of always looking for the next big sale.In this episode, Tim and Randy share the reasons why you should not fall for the excitement of a big sale and would rather focus on reoccurring revenues.Key Takeaways- The theme of the 2023 Growth Summit (01:30)- Importance of cash flow to a business (02:31)- Monthly recurring revenues vs. monthly expenses (06:21)- Don't live paycheck to paycheck (11:08)- Align your expenses with your income (14:45)- How to explode the growth and profitability of your business (16:15)Additional Resources- Become a member of the Gym Shirt Club and receive a shirt every month: https://gymshirtclub.com/----- Learn more about our Business Accelerator Coaching Program for Gym Owners - Grab your tickets for the 2023 FitPro Growth Summit - Learn more about The Iron Circle - Business Talk with Fitness Professionals Facebook group ---If you haven't already, please rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts!

Fate is a terrible writer.” – It's on us to take ownership of our lives and write our own stories. The 4 Roles We Play In Life: The Victim - The character who feels they have no way out The Villian - The character who makes others small The Hero - They accept their own agency. They know what they want. They face their challenges and transform. The Guide - The character who helps the hero How do most value-driven people see themselves? They see themselves as an Economic Product on the Open Market -- (be a good investment to attract further investment) “They are obsessed with getting people a strong return on the investment made in them. People who are obsessed with being a good investment attract further investment and get to enjoy more personal economic value. When you offer greater economic value within the economic ecosystem, you are paid more, given more responsibility and promotions, and are sought after by customers looking for value. In business, your boss may really like you, but in large part, they see you as an economic investment. There is nothing wrong with that. So how do we become ridiculously successful? By making other people absurdly successful.” They are relentlessly optimistic - Staying optimistic, you dramatically increase the chances that at some point you will succeed. The more optimistic you are, the more willing you will be willing to try. Successful people fail all the time. The difference is their willingness to keep trying. They know the right way to engage in conflict - Conflict-avoidant people are rarely chosen to lead. All human progress happens by passing through conflict. They have a bias towards action - “There is one thing every successful person has in common: They have a bias towards action.” They don't let ideas die on the vine. They take action to make those ideas happen. " Fear is a manipulative emotion that can trick us into living a boring life."
