In episode 43 of The Cyber5, we are joined by Steve Brown, Director of Cyber & Intelligence Solutions for Europe at Mastercard. Steve discusses the key aspects of cyber defense learned while working international cyber crime investigations with the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency. He will discuss the proven approach of prevent, protect, prepare, and pursue. We will also discuss the role Mastercard is taking in fighting cyber criminals, key aspects of adversary attribution, and how the public and private sector can forge better partnerships to combat cyber crime. 5 Topics Covered in this Episode: 1) Four P Approach: Prevent, Protect, Prepare, and Pursue: (01:59 - 06:08) Cyber criminals are not siloed. They coordinate on what is working and adjust quickly to take advantage of new vulnerabilities. To combat their adaptive approach, enterprises must have an equally collaborative model. Prevent: Mastercard is working with charities, non-profits, research centers, and universities to encourage individuals with technical backgrounds to pursue a career outside of cyber crime. Protect: Providing customers of Mastercard with the right knowledge and intelligence to proactively protect themselves. Prepare: Complementing playbooks with red teaming and resilience for Mastercard and its customers to ensure business continuity when an attack occurs. Pursue: It's not just about arrests; it's about Mastercard providing intelligence on infrastructure takedowns, victim engagement, and witness testimony. 2) Mastercard's Cyber Security Strategy: Pioneering the Security of the Digital Eco-System: (06:08 - 09:57) Mastercard's cybersecurity strategy is about securing the entire digital eco-system, both within and external to the perimeter. They want to be actively involved in the cybersecurity community and prioritize technologies that better define authentication across payment systems, identify anomalies that are congruent to compromised data and fraud, and improve standards and best practices. In November 2020, they launched Mastercard Cyber Secure, a unique AI-based technology that better addresses account data compromise events through identification and notification. In practice, victims are generally notified after initial intrusion. After the alert, cyber criminals use the compromised data to facilitate other crimes, including fraud, human trafficking, and espionage. Using risk assessment technology, Mastercard identifies, assesses, and prioritizes those vulnerabilities to Mastercard acquirers around the world. This is particularly critical for the small business community. 3. Mastercard's Role in Third Party Risk Management: (09:57 - 11:43) A critical part of securing the external perimeter is understanding third party suppliers. Mastercard's acquisition of RiskRecon is a testament to their dedication and diligence around third party vulnerabilities. 4. Know Your Adversary: Attribution is an Aspect of Resilience: (11:43 - 20:45) Attribution must be a critical part of enterprise cybersecurity strategy. Proper attribution can be a major source of resilience when responding to a cyber attack. Understanding infrastructure, personalities, actor groups, and TTPs informs proper controls and response strategy. Data collected by enterprises is critical to fighting cyber crime, and enterprises must facilitate ways to legally process and share data and experiences. Enterprises must rely on gaining information and attribution on cyber crime and espionage efforts without the assistance of government organizations. Illustrating the ability to scale security operations and recover from a cyber attack is of critical concern to boards, investors, and shareholders. 5) Private Sector's Increasing Role in Preventing Cyber Crime: (20:45 - 26:00) The private sector must increase collaboration with the public sector. While this is happening at the tactical, strategic, and inter and intra-governmental levels, it is still not happening at the speed and scale necessary to be effective. The National Cybersecurity Center in the UK and the National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) are two organizations that bring together cybersecurity practices and investigative techniques.

Happy Thursday to you, friends! Today was a beautiful and warm day in central California, and I think that has many people - including my kids - antsy for a return to regular life. I am rooting for that to be sooner, rather than later, but fully expect it to be later rather than sooner. Alas. On a walk today with my wife, she asked me how much longer I thought the quarantine and shut down would last. I obviously have no idea, but the answer I gave her kind of came out of nowhere, and went something like this, "Until the people of God begin to walk in the fear of the Lord again." I didn't really intend for that kind of Bible-juke to come out, but there you go. I do believe there is some truth to the statement, especially after reading Leviticus 26 yesterday. I don't know about you, but that passage rattled me. Today's Bible readings are from Leviticus 27, Psalms 34, Ecclesiastes 10 and Titus 2. A few episodes ago, we talked about the fear of the Lord. Perhaps the main thing we saw in that episode is that the Bible discusses the fear of the Lord frequently, and points to walking in the fear of the Lord as absolutely crucial to prospering, protection, and persevering in the faith. It will be a theme we return to fairly regularly, much like the resurrection, the Gospel, spiritual gifts, repentance, and others. Today we are going to get some practical advice from the Psalms that gives us directions on HOW to fear the Lord - what it looks like when we fear the Lord. Let's go read Psalms 34 and then come back and discuss it. First, we see the beautiful promise of God to be free from fear: I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears. 5 Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them. Psalm 34:4-7 And then we see the how-to of God-fearing: Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 Who is someone who desires life, loving a long life to enjoy what is good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech. 14 Turn away from evil and do what is good; seek peace and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help. 16 The face of the Lord is set against those who do what is evil, to remove all memory of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit. Psalms 34:11-18 How do you walk in the fear of the Lord? It's pretty simple: Keep your tongue from evil. The word for 'evil' in Hebrew is 'רַע raʻ, rah' it means the opposite of good - hurtful, malicious, wicked - against the ways of God. This is a fairly blanket term and would include pretty much anything that God's Word forbids - swearing, complaining, attacking, grumbling, tearing down, course and crude joking, hate speech, etc. 2. Keep your lips from deceitful speech. This doesn't merely include lying, but also deceit, guile and deception. In other words, to walk in the fear of God, you should be straightforward and honest in your words. 3. Turn away from evil. This is another way of saying repent - turn away from evil deeds and actions and walk in God's ways. 4. Seek AND pursue peace. This double command seems to indicate an impassioned pursuit of peace, not just a half-hearted attempt at it. A person of God will not only desire to be peaceful, but will seek and PURSUE IT. What are the promises of walking in this way? Myriad. Long life and blessing. The protection of God. The Angel of the Lord camping around you. Rescue from adversaries and the refuge of the Lord. This is the way, walk in it! Let's close with a brief word from brother Spurgeon: He who can manage his tongue can manage his whole body; for the tongue is the rudder of the ship, and if that be properly held, the vessel will be rightly steered. If thou wouldst escape the quicksands and the rocks, look well to thy tongue; keep it from evil, that it speak neither blasphemy against God nor slander against thy fellow-men; and keep thy lips from guile, that is, from deceit, from double meanings, from saying one thing and meaning another, or making other people think that you mean another,—an art all too well understood in these days. God make us plain-speaking men, who say what we mean, and mean what we say! When, by the grace of God, we are taught to do this, we have learned a good lesson. C. H. There are a few things that remain consistent in the whitetail woods; Hunting cold fronts, deer eat acorns, and Mark Drury finging and killing big deer. The man has been shooting buck bucks on film since we can remeber. Mark has become the tactician of killing monster deer early and often. He was kind enought to spend some time on the phone with us while we questioned him all about October bucks. Arrows have been released. The sweet taste of success has already been sampled. We are hungry for more! As I am typing this description there bucks are nudging does in the neighborhood, making scrapes on persimmon trees, and the breeze is a brisk north. In this episode we discuss the conclusion of K.C.'s Colorado DIY OTC Elk hunt with his family. Their hunt came down to the wire! Also, as we recorded, we were driving around truck scouting a public property here in Texas trying to formulate a plan for the season opener. We got a huge boost in confidence when we spotted a true Public Land toad at last light! Right away the OnX came out and we started scheming away. We've plotted our attack. FINALLY! Big bucks are starting to hit the ground in select states across the nation. Our good buddy Alex Comstock of WhitetailDNA has been hard after the deer of NoDak for a few seasons and it paid off big time this September. The rut in the south can be somewhat of an anomaly. Depending on your location, you may see bucks chasing in the heat of July or there could be hot action in late February. Ever since I was a small kiddo in a South Texas tripod, I can remeber being amazed at how well deer can pick off a hunter. Thier eyesight is unreal and is something that sometimes plagues us well into our adult hunting life. Just this past year we were picked off by a group of does while we were still as statues (or so we thought.) Recently we met Dr. Karl Miller at the QDMA National Convention in New Orleans. The man has dedicated his life to studying deer and is eager to share what he has learned with anyone who wants to hear it. We gotta say, Dr. Miller is a good sport too. Today's Quote is from Josh James When you find an idea that you just can’t stop thinking about, that’s probably a good one to pursue. ~~ Josh James Have you ever thought about something and then it seems to take over your mind? Have you awakened at night after a dream about that thing you've been thinking about all day? It's kind of like that song that gets in your head and you can't believe your humming it all day long. That idea, that thought is so powerful in your mind that you keep thinking of it day and night, you keep working it over in your mind, making it better and wondering about it. Well, as Josh James says . . . . and he should know. . . he has started several great ideas . . . that's probably a good one to pursue. The mind is a funny thing. Yes, it can block us from our goals if it has been programmed to not let you succeed. BUT when your mind is a Goal Getting Machine, like it should be, it will keep ideas that are good for your success in your mind and keep you tuned into the frequency of that success. If you have those thoughts that are that strong, that persistent, pursue them. Take them out and run with them. It may be the best idea, ever.
