November 24th, 2021 was a day that I'll remember for a very long time. I had hunted hard the entire fall. The goal was simple, harvest a deer with my antique recurve bow. I hadn't connected with a whitetail with my recurve for 12 years! Mostly because I hadn't really tried. For the previous two years, my focus and energy to be successful at traditional bowhunting had been re-ignited. In the fall of '20 I had missed a large buck...and then had another miss at a doe at close range. I was discouraged about that, but optimistic that I could get the job done in 2021. Sit after sit in treestands and ground blinds came and went. My spirits remained high, but time was running out. The season for whitetails ends on November 30. Finally, on a chilly winter afternoon, grey and bleak, it happened. Here was my chance at the whitetail buck of a lifetime! This episode happened at the beginning of my in-the-field-podcasting recording career. Unfortunately, inexperience shows through in places. I've learned a lot since last November. But still, you get to be in the woods with Kevin and me as we track and recover this beautiful whitetail buck. This episode was originally aired in January of 2022. However, very few people had a chance to listen to it with the limited audience I had at the time. I am also sort of surprised that people don't go back into past episodes more than they do. The re-releases seem to be popular, however, so I will continue with that now that we are doing better with our audiences here at buzzsprout. They were kind enough to swing by the STAGR Gear booth at Huntstock Fest and record a couple deer stories, tips, ideas, and more that you can apply to your adventures this coming deer season. Whitetail Deer Hunting Strategies with Jake Bush Show Notes: In my circle of hunting friends, there's no one who knows whitetail deer as well as Jake Bush in my book, specifically in the Midwestern side of the states. Jake is an experienced hunter who lives in Ohio, where he chases big bucks on public land. I see a lot of myself in Jake's approach to hunting. Neither of us have a lot of time to spend in the field – we hunt on very tight schedules. So, I picked Jake's brain about Ohio hunting, whitetails, working on tight schedules, and more. Jake walked us through his scouting and hunting philosophies. He wants to tag out as quickly as possible, so he spends a lot of time scouting. He works with online maps and topography maps, in an effort to “put as many pieces of the puzzle together as possible.” Jake discussed these “puzzle pieces” and what he looks for in his ideal hunting grounds. We also swapped a few tips for maximizing your success in the field. There's a lot of great info here that any hunters can put into practice. We also traded stories about our experiences hunting deer in the western states. No two states are the same, so we compared and contrasted some of the Midwestern states with further west areas. Each region calls for its own strategies and techniques. To round out our podcast, Jake told us a story about one of his hunts. This hunt changed the way Jake looked at the sport, scouting, and more. It was a great, insightful story about understanding your surroundings and waiting for the proper conditions – or not waiting, in this case. What's Inside: - Jake's strategy for scouting whitetail. - Jake's in-the-field techniques and tricks. - The differences between hunting in western vs. Midwestern states. - When to analyze your surroundings – and when to act. - Stories about big game hunting across the western states. Mentioned in this episode: Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ Phoenix Shooting Bags: https://www.phoenixshootingbags.com/ Jake Bush: https://www.instagram.com/thejakebush/?hl=en Jake Bush on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/LegendsOfTheHunt Short Description: Whitetail deer expert, Jake Bush, was such a pleasure to have on the show and he's one of the best to exchange knowledge and swap stories on big buck hunting with. We discussed hunting all over the country, whitetail strategy, and how to maximize your scouting in this episode. This was a fantastic conversation, and Jake dropped a lot of great knowledge here. George Lynch shares tips and tactics to be successful hunting Alien Big Bucks in your area. FIRST, it is always good to remember: * Make realistic hunting goals based on your geographic location and then adapt * Be willing to pass up immature deer to wait for big bucks* Remember, big bucks think, act and behave differentlyTIPS, STRATEGY AND FACTS:George breaks the deer hunting season into 4 categories: early season, pre-rut, regular rut and late season. When scouting, do it long range and limit your human scent.George Lynch's rules about entering the deers' habitat. Be sure you aren't following their runs Be sure you aren't making the animals feel that they are being hunting, tracked, etc.. As a hunter, you have to build your confidence so that every time you go in, you are doing so feeling that this hunt will result in success.First 3 days of early season provides the highest success rate to harvest a deer. Each subsequent hunt gives deer more awareness of human presence and the deer tend to hang low.George typically will not hunt the same family group more than 2 days in a row. It gives the deer a reprieve on feeling as if they are continually being hunted - lightens the pressure.Whitetails are some of the most adaptive animal in the world. Big bucks have learned to adapt with continued population and building expansions into their habitats. The older the buck, the smarter and wiser he is.For early season hunting, hunt near the food source in the evening, not in the morning. If you go in early, you'll be bumping a lot of deer. Rubs and scrapes start showing up in pre-rut season. Hunt the does and mock scrapes. Mature whitetails will go to the primary scrapes. Roger Rothhaar helped me with scrape classifications: boundary (tip: great place for a trail camera) secondary (overhanging branches to share scents) primary (mature does and mature bucks go to the primary scrapes) Bucks can use a Does' scent and urine to determine the doe's age, health and breeding status.Elevated Blind - Sniper Blinds - Email me if you want more info: geodlynch@gmail.comBlind set up tip: Keep your blind within the foliage so it does not pop out on the skyline. My instinct kicked in, and at sunset, I hiked to an overlook to scan a distant winter wheat field. My instinct was still working. The field was littered with muleys and whitetails. I counted nearly 80 deer and at least 20 bucks while scanning the winter wheat and an adjacent milo field. None were exceptionally outstanding, but with the bulk of the does in the neighborhood, the bucks would all be nearby. Two problems remained. I only had the next morning to hunt and getting to this location required busting ice to cross the river in my truck. Even if the ice would break I still had to hope my truck would crawl back up the slippery riverbank on the far side. Overnight, I heard it rain, further diminishing my confidence.
Idaho is home to the Northwest Whitetail. Should you choose to travel to Idaho on a whitetail hunt, two things to keep in mind: Be in shape, and be able to shoot at long distances. Many shot opportunities will come across canyons, and 300 yards should be a comfortable shot to make, with 400 yards even being within reason. The country is big and rugged, perfect for elk, bear, mule deer, and yes, even western whitetail. Intense walking may be required to make something happen, especially if searching for that true trophy class buck, but it’s doable if you’re in good physical condition. The whitetails in this part of Idaho are healthy and thriving. But be warned, once you set foot in the pristine land these deer call home, your impression of whitetail hunting will be forever changed, as it’s a bit different in this part of the West. This is Idaho whitetail deer hunting!
North America’s white-tailed deer has emerged as the world’s most popular big-game species. No other big-game animal has created such an economic institution and deep-seated obsessions, whitetail hunters annually spending upwards of $38.3 billion pursuing big-buck passions, or simply supplying healthy venison for the table. This could be viewed as a reflection of the animal’s widespread availability, but also the United States’ undisputed prosperity. The white-tailed deer has proven so popular it has been introduced to foreign countries such as New Zealand, Norway, and Eastern European countries such as Croatia and Slovakia (and others), and the U.S. Hawaiian islands.

On today's episode, I'm getting back to my whitetail roots with Bob Polanic where he talks about his out of state whitetail deer hunts to Nebraska. He covers why he started hunting Nebraska and how he was able to get access to hunt some private ground without paying a high dollar lease or hunting with an outfitter. We talk about the terrain and how it's a different world of hunting when you leave the confines of northern Michigan. We also discuss his upcoming hunt in Iowa, where he was able to gain access to a private farm while doing some spring and summer scouting a few months ago. He talks about his game plan for that hunt and why he thinks this could be his best hunt yet. To summarize, we talk about the importance of going on an out-of-state deer hunt and why everyone should experience states like Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and many more areas of the country that offer quality deer hunting. Public land is in abundance and door knocking is always a good option because you can never have to many properties to bow hunt. On today’s episode, I’m getting back to my whitetail roots with Bob Polanic where he talks about his out of state whitetail deer hunts to Nebraska. He covers why he started hunting Nebraska and how he was able to get access to hunt some private ground without paying a high dollar lease or hunting with an outfitter. We talk about the terrain and how it’s a different world of hunting when you leave the confines of northern Michigan. Happy November everybody!!!!!! The magical month is finally here. Enjoy this, you deserve it. Rod White has accomplished more as an archer than i could ever dream to. He has even represented our country twice in The Olympics, medaling both times. What is cool about Rod is that he is also evenly accomplished in the deer woods. Rod has about the best understanding of deer vocalizations of anyone I've ever met. Need evidence? Watch this: Best Deer Communication EVER Captured! It has been a super busy deer season, but we finally got to sit down and talk to our buddy Garrett Long about his awesome early season success. We met Garrett this past summer at the TRCP Media Summit and are now proud to call him a friend. When talking to Garrett, you immediately sense his passion for hunting wild places, the camaraderie shared with his family during the hunt, and preserving the heritage that we as hunters all share. Killing big mature bucks is impressive, but accomplishing it year after year truly puts a hunter in an elite category. He possesses an immense amount of knowledge for such a young guy and I learn something every time I have the honor of talking with him. LEAVE US AN iTUNES REVIEW AND WIN A FREE SHIRT!!! We are on the road again in search of wild places and whitetail bucks. Public land has its challenges, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Also, Dairy Queen and Braum's on the same hunting trip?! This week on the podcast we're joined by my old and close friend Michael J. Penney. Penney is a Marine Combat Veteran with combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He served as a foreign weapons instructor, a Police Advisor to the Afghan National Police and was trained as a designated marksman. Since leaving the Marines, Penney has been a serial entrepreneur - or "Vetrepreneur" - and has become a published author of the Five Paragraph Business Plan. He is also a Co-Host of one of my favorite podcasts Cigars and Sea Stories. Penney is also an avid outdoorsman, hunter and lover of all things venison. Penney shared the first deer he killed in North Carolina with me. He is, in many ways, responsible for my obsession with deer and deer hunting (Thanks, Mike!) In this episode we discuss how his season is going, "extreme" tactics for calling in Whitetail Deer and many other topics - from pooping in the woods to, well, just tune in to find out!
